    For my reference
To get good tone and sound:
    1.) flat bow
( creates a better sound and helps with angle )
    2.) us vibrato
3.) play in the middle of the board
( if u hear a scratchy voice while playing means u r too close to the bridge. If u want a softer sound can go closer to the fingerboard)
    4.) intonation
( if ur fingers aren't properly on the string then u would also get a scratchy sound. Make sure it is completely down on the string )
    5.) right pressure on bow
(not too hard, it can become scratchy. Not too soft too so u have to experiment urself to find the pressure that gives u the sound u like)
    6.)long bowing
(even if notes are short can still use long bow. You can produce a nicer sound)
    7.)get a better violin
(better violin, better sound and more advance. Ofc depending on ur circumstances)

You can't be that old. Violin is not easy. When I tried to go back to it, after a stroke, I was looking for a teacher, at the age of 49. He laughed at me and thought I should have been looking for a teacher for my 10-year old son. But he finally came up with a name, and I resumed playing with that teacher. It helped me beat depression. Later I started my own band, and joined an adult orchestra. My son started playing violin 2 years later because "I made it look easy!"

Focus on just one note, then two, then three, back to one, building up to 4 and 5 as you can handle. Stick to just one string and only one string, add the rest when you can effectively play notes in tune on that one string.

Good luck. This is laudable. I hope you can find a good teacher. I played violin on and off from the age of 10. When I was 36 I had a stroke. At 49 I had a craving to start playing again. At first I had trouble finding a teacher. One teacher actually laughed at me because of my age. But he still put me in touch with a very good teacher who worked mostly with kids. I felt that saved my life. It lessened my depression. I'm 65. Due to a few injuries, I took a shorter hiatus. Now I'm inspired to start again. This is an excellent idea. Don't give up. Violin isn't easy.

Imelda Pear I’m 67, and played orchestral violin in my 20’s, however since, I was involved in a tractor accident on the farm requiring extensive back surgery with rods and several screws. Alison’s videos have given me the confidence to start playing again. I also bought the Stentor 1500. I play the heck out of it. I am limited with polyneuropathy and osteoarthritis. I was told to go with a smaller model 3/4 or 7/8. This has worked for me with fingering! Best of luck to you!

As a self taught Cape Breton / Scots player I always made sure my bow was at right angles to the strings. People who play at an angle, even decent players, have a muddy tone. I am partial to slower tunes, laments, pastorals, slow strathspeys etc, I do play quite close to the bridge on really evocative tunes. I noted Nicolla Benedettii in a session with Allie Bain playing very close to the bridge. I tried it and it works but you have to be very much at full throttle. Perhaps you should listen to and watch the late Cape Breton player Jerry Holland who does everything "wrong" (Bow hold, bent wrist etc) but was truly elegant player. I suppose the folk vs classical traditions mean something. I enjoy your tutorials and playing.

  • @TheOnlineViolinTutor

it could be the way your fingers are on the string, combined with the way you are bowing. Its a difficult problem to solve and is more often or not a case of trial and error.....

Thank you. I just got myself a cheap little violin last week but after watching your videos every day and practicing as much as possible, I think I'm starting to realize now that this might actually be something that I might pic up quite nicely....still having trouble bowing on more than one string at a time, so I'm still working on arm positions, but other than that you ahve been an excelent help in me, a 31 year old full time employee being able to pic something up and learn.......been playing guitar for a while now and although that has helped me tremendously on my fingering it is still so much different because now its like I have to pat my head and rub my belly at the same time lmao

For intermediate+ classical or sacred music players: you might want to look at the thickness of the tip of the bridge - the top where the strings set on the bridge. A classical violin often sounds better when the tip of the bridge is thinner; it will give a cleaner/purer sound vs a broader tip will give a rougher/rustic sound, more ideal for fiddlers. Disclaimer: thinning of the bridge should be done by a pro and it can also cause the life span of the bridge can be diminished and it could break/collapse easier.
Also: If you play with an over the top practice mute a lot this might not be a good option for you.

What about other things to think about? As a relative beginner with a very good quality instrument I noticed recently that my tone improved immensely when I upgraded my bow. I am constantly thinking about the quality of my tone and what different strings might give me? There are various types and gauges of strings that will all contribute differently to the tone produced. Then there is the application of rosin? I am always thinking I have either too much rosin on my strings or maybe not enough? Sometimes after cleaning my strings I notice my tone has improved. Perhaps these are the questions that a video for the more advanced beginner but crucial non the less to the learning experience and development as a player.

I bought a $300 fiddle in 2007 to reduce my carry ons (first world problem) when I’d fly south to visit family for weeks at a time. Pressing a rubber mute on the bridge really mitigated the loud, edgy notes it produced.
When Covid started, I didn’t play with the local symphony and haven’t returned thanks to the break from sitting near the trumpets/flutes.
I came south this year and started playing again. This fiddle plus mute was good enough to impress the local shop guy when I needed a different chin rest. Cheers!

    Hello!
I watch your videos, and I think you are a great tutor. I'm 16 years old, and I am buying a violin really soon, and I've always wanted to learn how to play the violin. I think it's an amazing instrument.
Luckily, I live in Sweden and I get money for studying at school, so I'm going to use some of the money i get monthly to pay for the violin, because I want to make sure I get a good enough violin, I don't want to buy a cheaper one because I'm not really sure if I would be satisfied with it and I really want to continue playing the violin, at least for a very long time. I am a beginner, I've tried playing on a friend of mine's violin, so I'm not really experienced with the violin as far as I know. So would you recommend any violin for me to start with? Any price, really, because I can pay for it monthly instead of paying it all directly. Thank you for these amazing videos, they really help out a lot.
    have a great day,
    Christian

I just started violin recently and when I already played the piano and started flute a while back (which I now caught up to my usually less motivated peers at school with) how long would it probably take before I'm okay at violin at least so I can play dongs I like (not crazy hard ones or anything) did it take you a while? O know violin is a lot harder than the flute and very different from it and piano, that I could tell immediately.

"I'd like to ask when I should start learning vibrato."
Immediately. Learn vibrato at least as soon as you learn to shift. Learn it as soon as possible. It is a fundamental part of playing the violin.
The only thing I don't know about vibrato is if people can learn to do it variably. My guess is you trust your own ear about vibrato.

You need to practise in front of a mirror to see and learn where the bow needs to be in order to be straight. Its hard and takes time, but its exactly how i did it. Your arm doesnt know where straight is at the moment, so you need to train it.

You have some great tips and pointers. A year ago I started making a violin rosin that actually produces better tone on a violin I know it sounds nuts but it's gone viral. It's called Lonesome Pine violin rosin. I know you don't believe it but it's quite incredible I've been making rosin for 20 years and I came up with an ingredient and a process that changes the whole game in rosin making. I'm stating this now here because in a couple years you'll know all about the rosin. Already the greatest fiddle players in bluegrass music now use it and rave about it. A beginning violin student can use it to produce good tone immediately. I know teachers don't like to hear that but it works!. I like my own product and I'm excited about it and I'm excited about people finding it and trying it out. Keep making videos I really enjoyed it.

these were helpful. thanks. I have noticed that strings make a huge difference in tonal quality. I am a beginner but I noticed that Dominant strings sound best on my violin. They were old so I watched some videos on different brands and qualities: material, gauge, tension etc. decided to try something different. Went with Pirastro Tonicas. Where the Dominants rang like a bell with a full round tone, the Pirastros sound thin and less responsive. Saving up for a new set of Dominants.

    1. Keep the bow flat
    2. Use Vibrato
    3. Position the bow halfway between the bridge and fingerboard.
    4. Press your fingers all the way down.
    5. When playing higher on the fingerboard (e.g. 4th position) pay extra attention to finger and bow pressure.
    6. Use long, open strokes.
    7. Get a nice violin that is capable of making a good sound.

If you want to tilt the bow you don`t need to rotate your whole hand . Also don`t "Press" your fingers down hard . Just light contact is enough .

Is it common for a string (E) to sound off even when you have expensive strings (Pirastro)? Open E sounds bad but an E played on the A does not (And sometimes the E squeaks/squeals when I drop over to it from A). Closed notes on the E sound alright but I that might be because of unconscious adjustment. I know you can't really comment on something you can't hear but I am wondering if you think the fault would lie with the instrument or the physical string?
I use a middle-grade rosin but am thinking of upgrading to Pirastro Gold, do you think the more expensive rosin is worth it for an amateur performer?
Thanks so very much for your time and your videos! They are a real blessing!

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  9 лет назад

+Callie Walsh No - it wont be the string. Without knowing whats going on for myself, I can only suggest that it could be your violin or the way you are bowing it? As i said, I cant see or hear for myself, so I cant really help other than that. Sorry.

I can’t see or hear what’s going on so I can’t help much, but you either have to learn to isolate the strings, or see if your bridge is too flat. If that’s the case, you need to get your bridge shaped properly.

I am just a month learning the violin, yes I have pro trumpet and guitar background, and a very good ear for tone, no, it did not let me just waltz into being pro on it overnight, but there are moments someone hearing would swear I've been playing it pro for years. I am getting the non fret element addressed while the not being able to use my pick and fingers on the strings to pluck, so that bow has been something new to deal with and cutting through lot's of bull on the teaching element in the process to form my own that works. First, and absolutely first, to get decent tone out of it, make sure the bow is rosened correctly to give you a chance, and second, just as high of a priority, get the bow held loosely from your fingertips, even if it's just two fingers touching it with a third only opting in occasionally, and find that balancing spot that's comfortable, not at the end of the bow necessarily, closer up towards the middle for the right center of gravity. Let gravity, not pushing down help with the tone, don't force the thing through the strings, think light touch is best, allow it to flow gently, try to get it to play softly and quietly, the more quiet the better, not this flat one volume only, in trumpet it's called soft tones where you push air through just as much as the lips to produce the sound. You will find yourself making the bow lighter by getting used to reducing the amount of gravity it's pulled down to, and this far into it, no tips are going to replace practice, practice and practice, just make sure you are progressing else you are not learning.
Spend money on name brand strings, they don't have to be super expensive, but the stock ones on the cheap beginner models are only there to learn some of the basics, never expect them to sound good, do this before spending crazy money on some expensive violin that for the most part for a new to intermediate player will do you nothing to help with tone outside of some at most, minor difference. I can make cheap, just crap guitars and trumpets sound good, I can't imagine this is any different on the violin, just one needs to work harder on the inferior instruments for that.

    • @saucerguy3
      @saucerguy3 3 года назад

Second month into it, still a giant amount of fun, that light bow allows you much greater capacity for balancing and fine tuning your finger placement on it, and yes, using the sides/edges of it as well and a mix of more of sorts for it and holding the bow as you play, better to explore rather then ruin the fun trying to put down in words.
I am hitting some good notes and combos, now with several strings working together, just having exploring for now, nothing serious. The sound though, not flat, basic, generic, and I can very much see now, it's like this low tech version of an amplified instrument like we have for our electric gear. I am still noodling around stage, but as stated before, just fun!
I want to thank people that put out helpful video tutorials like this one here, absolutely these are the go-to people to talk to and learn from.

I am having an issue with keeping the violin in place. The only thing that stops it from falling off my shoulder is my left hand. How hard are you holding the violin down between your chin and shoulder? It feels like it requires a lot of pressure to free up the fretting hand to move. I've been a guitarist of 15 years and have a nice vibrato/fingering from that instrument and it should transfer over nicely if I can free up my left hand :) Should I maybe get a should mount? My left hand is not allowed to move at the moment.

    • @ArthurMorganVP
      @ArthurMorganVP 10 лет назад +1

I think it would be a good idea to get a shoulder rest. There are various kinds, so you should experiment with each one because one might work better for you than another,

ultimately, yes. They wont eliminate scratch or give you a better tone just on their own as they are not 'magical' (if you get what i mean lol) but they will go a long way in helping you to get a better tone as they will be responsive and much smoother and more compliant.

I have been striving mainly with the G String and probably the other Strings at 440 Hz.
Finally, I decided to decrease in steps of 5 Hz to see what happened to the sound. I found that at about 430 Hz, my Violin has improved a lot, a lot, alot !
Is each violin has a particular fine tuning to reach by trial and error ?
    Thanks for your professional advice.

Could I just ask for you to explain to me what note is G Major and what note is G minor ? or G flat on a violin ? what strings would i be holding for each of hose ??
Or is it covered later in these practical lessons ? OR are those just for Piano ??

There is no note of G major or G minor.
You can only get G natural, G# or Gb.
You can get these notes in several places on the violin so it depends on what the music is saying. You wouldnt really ever play a Gb.
