Oh my goshhhhh I've been playing the violin for so long with such a straight bow and I always asked myself why the bow bounces so much and this answered it. I actually feel really dumb right now but thank you nonetheless
I'm just a beginner but do notice a bounce sometimes and stop to loosen the bow. My teacher told me you have to be able to press the hairs to the wood in the middle.
Yes, too much of tightening the bow without giving a curve at the centre of the bow leads to a scratchy sound instead of smooth pleasant sound from my violin. only after this experience i wanted to refer to your teaching through the youtube and confirmed my finding. You are a wonderful teacher. Thank you very much madame.
I know nothing about playing the violin. My son has shown interest in it and has started playing this year at school. He is 7. Your videos have helped me help him. Thank you.
My first violin is on its way! I've played guitar and bass all my life so this will be new to me! Thanks for the awesome video on how to tighten the bow!
I appreciate you taking the time to make these! I just got my violin, and where I live lessons are hard to find, not to mention fund, since I'm a broke college student :)
I have just started. I have grade 8 piano, so the reading is no big deal, but my bowing sounds like a cat dying. How's everyone else on this thread doing?
Oh shit! The untighten thing after practice was a new one. I've not done that! Only had it for like a week though, but will definitely loosen it after! Thank you!
Just received my violin from Eliga GEM 2 Student grade and using you videos - Rosen the bow- hold the bow-hold the violin-7 mistakes for squeaking and squawking Etc-- I'm off to a great start! Thank you!! Glad I found your site!
Thank you so much for all your tips. They have helped me tremendously. After I retired, I picked up playing again. One is NEVER too old to start playing. I am enjoying playing very much.
I have just gotten a violin as a beginner. Thus far your tutorials are very informative and detailed. I can get good sound out of my violin, lol. My husband has taught himself to play the banjo so I'm teaching myself the violin. I'm ordering different rosin also instead of keeping the cheap one. Thank you so much for your videos. I really appreciate your teaching.
Alison, Thank you so much! I've been following you for quite sometime and I enjoy your content. Today I stumbled upon this video regarding tightening the bow and it made me go back and look at how I have been playing for the past 1.5-2 years. My former teacher had me over tightening my bow, I made a simple adjustment per your instruction and it drastically improved my playing. It was such a noticeable improvement that my roommate thought I had another violinist over performing. Sincerely, Mark
not only are these videos extremely well done, so informative, well-paced, and concise, but this woman is beautiful. and i could listen to that accent all day. holy cow.
I’ve been playing with my bow super loose so thank you. Every video of yours I’m learning something new. Hopefully my twinkle twinkle little star will start sounding better . Thank you !!!!!!
Many thanks indeed for this Alison! At the ripe old age of 36, I'm an absolute newbie at playing the violin and although I have no illusions to become one of the Nicola Benedetti's of this world, it's an instrument I've always wanted to take up. This has helped me a lot as I've been struggling with virtually all aspects of the bow - from how to correctly hold it, how much to rosin it and until now, how tight it should be. I recently purchased the Stentor Conservatoire outfit and am pleased with it - a very nice violin. Again, this video and your others Alison are very helpful and I thank you for taking the time to educate us! 🖒 I'm a new subscriber! -Chris x
I recently got a violin from a previous owner. I did not know that you could tighten the bow hairs, it is now a lot easier to play when the hair is not touching the wood.
Your personality sparkles making these videos informative and personable. Thank you very much for your cultural contribution. I hope to learn as much as I can.
I really appreciate your videos. I do not know how to play the violin, nor have I ever owned one, yet, I am planning to acquire my first instrument soon. I live in Hawaii and play an Ukulele along with my friends. I think the sound of the violin will blend beautifully with those of the Ukuleles and guitars. Watching your videos are giving me a jump-start on my learning. Thank you and God bless you.
some bows do differ slightly, but as long as its not over tightened, I would carry on as you are. You ca always post a picture on The Online Piano Tutor facebook page and I can comment?
it s a difficult one, but usually when you get to a decent grade like grade 4ish and upwards. Any earlier and you probably wont have the bow skills to notice spending a lot of money on a new one - unless the one you have really isnt very good...
A lot of this kind of thing seems to be personal preference, which is good. Gave the video a thumbs up, simply because I didn't know (until now) that the real difference between a tight and loose bow is the bounce it has. Also, VERY good to know that it's bad to keep a bow tight, rather than loosen it when you're not using it. Currently waiting for some rosin (the kind that came with my violin was very poor quality, as was the bow), but I plan to put this into action tomorrow, when my rosin arrives. Don't want to use the cheap rosin on my new bow.
Subscribing. Thank you, Alison, for posting these videos. I got my grandfather's fiddle when he passed many years ago and told myself one day I would learn to play it. You're already teaching me, and I intend to follow more of your instruction! Great information:)
This has been so helpful. And don't worry, it showed up fine on camera :) You have been a fantastic tutor, a brilliant inspiration, and your videos are so full of information that I have the confidence to pursue this lifelong ambition. Thank you, a thousand times!
Another tip is to fit your pointer and middle finger between the bow. If your fingers fit comfortably, but still a bit snuggled between the hairs and wood, then it's good. All bows are different than others, so make sure that your bow is not too loose and not too tight. You'll feel the stress on your bow when you know you've exaggerated the looseness and tightness.
i have literally just done a video on this that will be coming out very very soon. Its a new series of videos im trialing where you the subscriber send me videos to use here on YT and i tell you how to overcome specific problems or just give you a general critique with the benefit of others here on YT as well. It should answer your question and save me having to write it all out here! Hope thats ok.....keep your eyes peeled :))
I have begun my violin lessons up to violin 4. These have been very good refreshers on the notes. Am I in the right place for the entire violin series that I have purchased? Or, in my gmail as pdf ? Thank you!
sorry for the delay - i have only just seen this msg. you could try to tighten the strings enough to stop it slipping int eh first place then, go in for a re-tune. Perhaps you are trying to tune each string separately and this is causing the problem. Dont whatever you do glue anything on the violin though :))
Tuanks for this. I recently bought back my old violin, and thecperson I had sold it to years ago never used it at all. They loosened the strings and removed the bridge but didn't loosen the bow so it had def stretched and needed a little adjustment. I'm excited to get back to learning, I'm just waiting on new strings because I broke the e string trying to tune it and there's no rosin. 😁😁😁
zena K late response, but if you have a loose hair on your bow I hold it from the top of the hair (at the tip of the bow) and pull it off. Don’t yank it out, just pull it :) not a professional though so google to make sure!
My violin teacher taught me a trick: stick a pencil between the wood and the hair, approximately in the middle of the bow; then tighten the hair until the pencil drops. If you have rather small fingers, you can now stick your little finger through the bow (middle of the bow). That's how I do it. :)
Thanks. Video helped. Got a new violin and havent played since 2005-2019. Couldnt figure out if a few bow strings should be loose. Wasnt tight enough. (Never owned my own violin and spent a good amount on one and scared to ruin it haha) thanks for your videos.

Well it depends how bad it is as I cant see it. It also depends on whether you have turned it too much. Again since I cant see it, I couldnt say. You may well have to buy another, or take it back to the seller who has sold you a 'broken' bow.

What do you do if the bow is curved too much, and touches the hair? I tried loosening and tightening it, but neither worked.

Thanks for the advice!
Mika Tarkela I got my violin from my dads uncle
We are the same...I'm not even kidding I got it like today, five hours ago.
I got mine from my grandfather. It was based off a Strad! It's currently getting repaired. It's name is Phantom.
Thats cool! I had to buy mine xD i bet if your violin could talk it would have some cool stories!

if you have a loose hair and its bothering you you could just remove it carefully without removing any others. If not, leave it. you cant repair them
while i'm playing, should the hair ever be brushing against the wood of the bow where i'm putting it on my violin strings?
@@arianebenzahl764 No, your bow is too loose then. Just tighten it a tad bit more
