Yes, too much of tightening the bow without giving a curve at the centre of the bow leads to a scratchy sound instead of
smooth pleasant sound from my violin. only after this experience i wanted to refer to your teaching through the youtube and confirmed my finding. You are a wonderful teacher. Thank you very much madame.

    Alison,
Thank you so much! I've been following you for quite sometime and I enjoy your content. Today I stumbled upon this video regarding tightening the bow and it made me go back and look at how I have been playing for the past 1.5-2 years. My former teacher had me over tightening my bow, I made a simple adjustment per your instruction and it drastically improved my playing. It was such a noticeable improvement that my roommate thought I had another violinist over performing.
    Sincerely,
    Mark

Many thanks indeed for this Alison!
At the ripe old age of 36, I'm an absolute newbie at playing the violin and although I have no illusions to become one of the Nicola Benedetti's of this world, it's an instrument I've always wanted to take up.
This has helped me a lot as I've been struggling with virtually all aspects of the bow - from how to correctly hold it, how much to rosin it and until now, how tight it should be.
I recently purchased the Stentor Conservatoire outfit and am pleased with it - a very nice violin.
Again, this video and your others Alison are very helpful and I thank you for taking the time to educate us! 🖒
    I'm a new subscriber!

A lot of this kind of thing seems to be personal preference, which is good.
Gave the video a thumbs up, simply because I didn't know (until now) that the real difference between a tight and loose bow is the bounce it has. Also, VERY good to know that it's bad to keep a bow tight, rather than loosen it when you're not using it.
Currently waiting for some rosin (the kind that came with my violin was very poor quality, as was the bow), but I plan to put this into action tomorrow, when my rosin arrives.
Don't want to use the cheap rosin on my new bow.

Another tip is to fit your pointer and middle finger between the bow. If your fingers fit comfortably, but still a bit snuggled between the hairs and wood, then it's good. All bows are different than others, so make sure that your bow is not too loose and not too tight. You'll feel the stress on your bow when you know you've exaggerated the looseness and tightness.
