      This IS by far the easiest to understand how to "create" what you don't want so you know how to NOT create what you DON'T want.

    Hello Mr Goeffry. I am a 47 years old woman from Turkey and started violin at this age. Everyone around me thought it is very late for learning playing violin. But I really want it. It is very inspiring hearing about the 93 years old beginner :) I heard about my mistakes and learned how to correct them. Thank you and thank for your video. I will try and try. Looking for your other videos for the beginners :)

    You just made a comment that blew my mind, +FiddleJamInstitute: "Learning how to make it sound bad, is the fast track to sounding good." This can apply to nearly anything. I myself just bought a violin, and tuned it yesterday. I am a beginner. I've bookmarked your website to look into a possible membership to teach me how to play the Violin. The reason I remarked on your comment is because I also play videogames competitively, and your "technique" will be the cornerstone to my improvement in that. Thank you for your cross-discipline tip! Violin set up, rosin and strings also really matter in the sound a violinst produces, even for an absolute beginner. Some strings and gauges are more forgiving than others. It is impossible to scratch with Larsens! Lowering the action on the nut or the bridge a tiny littlebit lowers the strings just enough so the fingers do not have to press so hard. Also plain gut is easy to play. But the problems and solution you describe are spot on. If only I had known sooner.....

    Anyway, this video helped a lot with my violin learning. I self learn the violin and every book or video is full of "do this, must be parallel, play piano, move bow, hold like this, fingertips blah blah" without actually explainig the purpose.

I am just watching to learn and expand my understanding of the violin and I respect the instrument and people who take the time to learn and play. I initially started listening to Mendelssohn violin Concerto E. Minor OP.64. It's a wonderful piece.

    I've never really had a lesson & I've been frustrated with many times I've sounded like a donkey that I've accidentally poked in the butt with the bow while sawing away, LOL!
    I've only been at it for a month & 1/2...being a decently accomplished guitarist & bassist; I found the approach to violin/fiddle to be backwards to bass/guitar...that...& my bow control is awful, I think.
    This video cleared up some of my questions.

    • @thelionneverroars1570
      @thelionneverroars1570 6 лет назад +8

      I'm a lefty, but I've never had an issue. In fact, being a lefty made it a lot easier for me. Everyone is different, and playing that way is your choice. If playing a 'right handed violin' is too hard, do not switch to a 'left handed' violin. Playing a left handed violin will not get you anywhere if you wish to play in an orchestra or take lessons with a professional. Playing a 'right handed instrument' is the better and most common way to play a stringed instrument. A guitar has both left and right handed versions and can easily be adjusted depening on what you are doing. A violin however, is NOT. I've been playing the violin for two years now, but an orchestra student for three. I've asked my teacher (a 72 year old man who's been playing the violin since he was 9) for an opinion on that and he told me that right handed is better. Lefty violins exist, but are probably not the best quality. You made a good choice and I hope you've had luck with learning.
      PS. I know this is like a year later, but I hope this was somewhat useful and made sense.

      +FiddleJamInstitute I've been training like a madman to become a Professional Card Dealer so I only have small portions of my day for violin, piano, hand flute, etc...perhaps in about 3 months when I'm making the big bucks Dealing I'll check out your course. I'm already sold on your overall presentation and efficiency as an Instructor, seriously man... your appearance, accents and speech, show not tell explanations, over all structure and presentation, in depth knowledge, and personality are all pretty much flawless and geared to teach any age, sex or level of intelligence. Not just anyone can be a Teacher, especially not a good one! It takes very special and unique talents that only certain people have. Anyway, bravo! Keep on passing on all your talent/knowledge...you've been blessed with the power to do so.

    You make this really easy to understand. I wish I could have had some coaching like this when I took string methods class during my music education degree. I just couldn't move the bow fast enough to get a good sound. I probably could have gotten it with a little more work.

    Thank you Geoffrey! You have explained with visually showing several aspects of how not to how to properly bow, finger angle and pressure, etc in 15 mins, that took me several separate videos to watch, and still didn’t get it! I have seen bluegrass playing Orange Blossum Special that sideways bowing between end of fingerboard to the bridge sounds like a train chugging.

    can rosin effect the sound of the violin? Can it make a scratchy sound like what you've demonstrating?

    • @geoffreyperry9531
      @geoffreyperry9531 8 лет назад +1

      Yes. Too much rosin can add to a scratchy sound. So can brand (read: formula)

      I received my acoustic/electric violin in the mail today, but I'm waiting til tomorrow to rosin my bow and begin practicing. Because I ordered a string mute to use since my practice space is rather small and I don't want to disturb others nearby with what may sound like a dying animal on the premises. (Hopefully that will not be a persistent issue though.) LOL! :-D

    Super excellent lesson, you covered all the scratching boo-boos for us neophite violinists (I'm 76 this week -- eeee-haa). There's so much to be aware of as a beginner of violin playing, more so than most instruments, but I'm lovin' the hell out of this fiddle. Never gave a damn much about bluegrass but suddenly I'm smittin - I just gotta learn bluegrass. Thanks for the lesson.

    Does the amount of rosin effect this sound?

    • @OutlawFiddleJam
      @OutlawFiddleJam  7 лет назад +5

      It can, but it is really hard to over-do it (rosin) compared to good relaxed technique

    I ALWAYS get the bow hair stuck on the bridge whenever im trying not to screech! Do you know how NOT to do that?

    • @geoffreyperry9531
      @geoffreyperry9531 6 лет назад +1

      I do not know exactly what you mean on that one, but if you are hitting the bridge by accident, you are probably way too tight in your grip. All joints hold be loose and flexible, including the fingers and elbow.

I found this video and tried the tips on my violin while practicing the "Mii Channel" and it sounded sooooo much better. This was very helpful. Another thing is that the video is straight forward.
