i nearly cried when brett said that. i was learning how to do vibrato right before i stopped taking lessons and it fucked me up. inspired by twoset i picked up the violin again for the first time in like 3 or 4 years the other week and i've been practicing and well, vibrato is fucking me up once again. sighhhh. why am i even doing this to myself
It's so frustrating to be told "relax" and not know how. A few things you could try: 1) Experiment with making circles with the left hand thumb. First try just in a playing position with your thumb lightly touching the neck of the violin. Circle your thumb one direction and then switch. Work up to playing a scale very slowly while still circling your thumb. This will start to separate your thumb from your finger action. It's normal that every time we drop a finger on the violin we grip with the thumb to try and keep the finger in place but it's important to work on getting the fingers and thumb to be more independent. 2) If you have a bookshelf that is tall or a tall table or an upright piano, experiment (safely and carefully!) with letting the violin be held up by a shelf. Put down a cloth so you don't scratch your instrument and put your scroll on the cloth. Find a position where you feel the violin is supported by the shelf. Play a slow scale and explore allowing the violin (supported by the shelf) to hold the weight of your fingers so instead of pressing your finger down (and presumably gripping with your hand), you are feeling like your heavy hand would fall through the violin if it wasn't there. Explore transferring the weight to each new finger you put down as you play your scale. These 2 exercises should work to loosen your hand and wrist so that you can start to get some flexibility to explore vibrato. I hope it helps!
My teacher said it takes about 2 months to perfect your vibrato so its perfectly fine if you don't get it right away its been about 2 weeks for me and it sounds way better than when i started
Honestly I've never got the hang of it when I was in school. And like you it made me mad and quit the violin. I regret I ever did. I loved it. I still do. Don't quit like I did. Don't give up. Keep trying. This is a video that helped explain it in a way that I could understand that I really didn't get in school.
Vibrato isn't something that you just learn through the night. It takes months to perfect. Keep practicing and you'll get it one day. I've been practicing and there is a small amount of improvement. It will take a long time to practice but at the end it'll be worth it.👍🏼☺️
damn... I wasn't expecting this to be the best explanation on youtube. It is the best I've come across so far and I've been watching videos on vibrato the whole day. This REEEEAAALY helped me a bunch. Lady, you deserve two cookies. also, can I fanboy a little bit now? You look really good. I love how your make up is assertive, but not over the top, and also, short hair s2
Best vibrato tutorial I've seen so far. Been playing for 1 year and this has really explained the technique clearly and given great exercises to practice. Thank you!
I'm frequently surprised by how essential reductionism is to learning things. It is to music as it is to maths and research and to sports. The way you break down difficult concepts and techniques to its components, or altogether slow down its execution until it is blatantly clear to the learner what they're doing (even if the end result is obscured). And when all core elements are familiar, putting them together is a matter of will. It seems obvious, but still something a lot of people struggle to understand, and which many teachers don't easily convey. But I got the idea very well from this video. Thank you.
Your orchestral teacher should "teach" it whenever you desire it. Learning is intrinsically chaotic. A baby isn't banned from speaking until it has learned to walk! All facets of learning can be done at the same time. The notion that you shouldn't "do" one thing until you have "mastered" another is the reason why so many violinists and others are slow to learn. There is an assumption that learning several things at once somehow create bad habits. It's nonsense. If you want to vibrate (and it's good that you do because you recognise it makes your instrument sound better) then go ahead. There are plenty of ways to learn it like this excellent video.
Wow, I've spent more time than I'd like to admit trying to follow all the other videos on youtube on how to vibrato, and this was easily the best, clearest and most simple that I've ever found. Thank you so much!!!
This is amazing! I've tried to learn to play the violin three times over the course of my life (now 30 something) and I can play - but I can't play vibrato. All of my teachers have told me that you just wobble on the string - which I just couldn't do. I ended up thinking some people could play violin and some (like me) just couldn't. This is the first time I've seen this technique explained in a way that I'm sure I would be able to practise and master! Thank you for encouraging me to take this instrument up again.
Coming from 30 years of classical and electric guitar(barely scratching the surface of fiddle instruments), where the vibrato requires stiff fingertips and bending the strings either laterally(electric) or longitudinally(classical), this was an eye-opening lesson. Based on this lesson, it appears that vibrato on the fretless instruments is not about stretching or loosening the string tension, but more about "rolling" the fingertips back and forth to vary the vibrating length of the string. Thank you for the great lesson!
Finally a video that makes sense to me. As an adult learner your explanation of 1st finger placement has helped me tremendously. I was not clear about thumb placement but reading through your reply to a comment has clarified that for me also. I APPRECIATE YOU!!!!
This is my 5th year and I’m only just learning it. My school teacher knows nothing about orchestra, and my private teacher made sure we knew how to shift and had really good muscle memory before she taught it, but I moved before we got to that

As others have said, this is a really good explanatory video. I picked up the violin 18 months ago for the first time since I was 12 (so 27 years ago!) and I got my excellent violin teacher to start me off on vibrato just before we stopped lessons for summer holidays. This video has been great for filling in the gap while I’m away from lessons over the summer, thank you so much!!!

Lauren I know this is an older video but I just came across it. Thank you. I've been at it for 2 years now and I have a bit of arthritis in my left 1st and 2nd fingers. Other methods I've seen have been pretty painful but this method has been helping with minimal pain. Thanks again. My teacher has had a stroke, so you are my "primary" now! 😁
👏 Great video! Unlike brass and woodwind instruments that can do vibrato with each and every note, the violin is at a distinct disadvantage in that open string notes can't do vibrato. If, for example, the song ends on an open G, D, A, or E string, it won't be able to emote that sensational vibrato effect. 🎻🎶

SERIOUSLY THANK YOU!!!! I have had such a hard time the last couple years and no one could really explain it that good! BUT U DID IT OMG I'M SO GRATEFULL
Oh thank you a finger exercise i can do 100 times a day without needing to grab the fiddle.I just noticed my nails have to be much shorter than yours are..like non existent. Im sticking with this video 🙏🏼 thank you.
I played for six years or so and never learned. 😭 I stopped playing when I was 14. I’m 20 now and am going to try and get back into the violin. 🎻 Vibrato is something that will allow me to enjoy what I’m playing.
Like brett said "just wobble your hand"
Twosetviolin is the best
💕
TWOSETTT
I wish i was ling ling
You watch twoset too?!!
“Just wiggle your hand”
-Brett Yang, twosetviolin
That's what I did basically. And all that happened was that I shook my violin around xD
A little oversimplified...and that was a little understated
Wasnt it eddy? Or did brett also say that too
Lol. But so -false- true.
i nearly cried when brett said that. i was learning how to do vibrato right before i stopped taking lessons and it fucked me up. inspired by twoset i picked up the violin again for the first time in like 3 or 4 years the other week and i've been practicing and well, vibrato is fucking me up once again. sighhhh. why am i even doing this to myself
When I tryed wiggling my hand my whole body wiggles too 😂😂😂
Try hard be like
Aishas Animations sameee my whole instrument shakes
Mine too, I can't help it but shake I tried so hard, but I just still can't 😂
Same tho
I've been playing for five years and still cant do it 💀
Every single tutor i had tells me to "relax" i think u and me can say that relaxing is something impossible!😫😩
Just let go in your muscles. Obviously don’t drop the bow or violin, but try to let go.
It's so annoying. Every teacher I've had always says "you're panicking!" even though I'm not I'm just trying to learn
@leti castro YA MY VIOLIN TEACHER CALLS ME A PERFECTIONIST XD
It's so frustrating to be told "relax" and not know how.
A few things you could try:
1) Experiment with making circles with the left hand thumb. First try just in a playing position with your thumb lightly touching the neck of the violin. that’s what i was thinking!
FINNALLY!!!! somebody gets me! I showed this to EVERYONE in my class(19 people) and nobody could relate! thank you😂🎻🔈
How do you fix that?
Vibrato is such a tough skill to teach! I always wait for that “lightbulb” moment for it to click with my students.
The collapsing the knuckle idea is easy to understand . I haven't exactly heard it expressed that way in other videos .

The tonal quality of your violin is good. That is a big plus. Even without a vibrato the sound is good. Such violins makes it easier to learn vibrato.
