Don't get discouraged I played 5 of 6 years before my teacher even brought up vibrato.
It's my 3rd year playing and my teacher is already urging us by 2 :,)
My teacher hasn’t mentioned it for 8 years hence i finally gave up and decided to teach it to myself
Addison Winward - it’s my 4th year and we have a vibrato project now
I think a student should begin right away in learning the rudiments or the wrist/hand motions of vibrato. Don’t make it some mysterious and advanced technique for the gifted. It’s not that difficult to develop a basic vibrato which can be improved upon as time goes by.
@@Jleed989 A beginner should not attempt vibrato for at least a year as the basics need to settle in. I do not agree with teachers not teaching it until many years after they start as I agree with you, that it is something they should learn closer to the beginning, so that by the time they can play more intermediate and upwards music, the vibrato will have developed nicely.
However, attempting it before at least a year can be damaging to the basics as they must be learned and settle in first - which only time can do, as you cant accelerate time.
Me: **Has been playing for 2 weeks**
Her: "Wait until you have been playing for at least a year before you attempt vibrato."
Me: **picking up violin** "No, I don't think I will."
That's me right now! Thanks Alison for the great lesson!
Fr
I see I'm not the only one!
Same 🤣 I mean I focus on the basics first but allow myself sometime to try advanced things for a bit. It makes practice fun
Your not the only one but at minimum you need those basics or it's going to hold you back. I'm there along with you but if we waste our trip me doing stuff we are not ready for we are missing out on all the good practice we could be getting instead. I'm focused on doing my scales and and I'm going to put vibrato on hold till I'm more ready. In the mean time I'm going to look at what she suggested. I don't agree with the year thing tho cause it's all dependent on how much you practice. If you practice for 30 min everyday for a year and another does 2 or 3 hours or more every day obviously the other person will be ready quicker.
The thing is I try hard for like 2 days and then I get lazy...i annoy myself
Don't worry. You'll get it eventually.
Dya get it?
Today I tried vibrato seriously, and it's a bit tiring. I can't go very fast yet as it sounds inconsistent and is hard to keep up with, but I can go slower for a little longer (except that naturally I want to go faster). I did it on scales, bits of songs I know, and on single notes with the second and third fingers as I found those easier to start. It's hard for me to vibrato on the G and D strings though, but I'll get there ;) And yes I've played for a year (can't believe it -time flies!).
that was me before, but with more practice you’ll eventually get used to it! it’s like learning not to collapse your wrist lol
I've been playing a month and i can make dying whale sounds +^_^+
I know you said wait a year, but in the privates of my home, where nobody hears dying whales, i try anyway...
I mean...i STARTED 2years ago...and then took a1.5 year break... so...time to start :3
And, have you progressed?
Vibrato has always been difficult for me. I’ve been playing for 5 years now and I still can’t get it 😂
I’ve been playing for 5-6 years and still can’t do it 😭
Me too
Hi Alison, I just wanted to say that I've seen your other vibrato videos, and you're the only one who actually helped me learn. I've seen hundreds of other vibrato videos but none of them really explained properly what I had to do. Thanks to your videos I learnt the vibrato in a day (I know it sounds unbelievable but it's true)
You're a really awesome violin tutor, and I just wanted to thank you for making these awesome videos.
I believe it. Its an Asian.
"Thanks to your videos I learnt the vibrato in a day (I know it sounds unbelievable but it's true) "
I believe it because you are Asian.
@@ClassPunkOnRumbleAndSubstack lol
Undoubtedly it is the best and clearest explanation for achieving the vibrato, with the addition of seeing the most beautiful eyes of the extraordinary teacher. God bless you, José Luis, from Argentina.
This video made me finally realise why it's called rock n roll 9:12
Thanks. This is my fourth year of playing (albeit inconsistently). I started at about 47. I’ve been attempting to practice vibrato on and off for the last two years but always give up. I have decided to persist and crack it this year. So far, I’ve been trying consistently for about a fortnight and I’m happy to say that it doesn’t sounds completely awful anymore. So thanks Alison. You’re right. I will keep plugging away every day. I am determined. 2020 - My year of vibrato!
hey, how are you doing with your vibrato?
My year of vibrato tanked a bit. Covid happened and life fell apart a bit, but I’m back in the game now and rewatching.
Sorry, same person. Different username.
Perhaps the best tutorial on vibrato on the internet.
Thank you so much for your tutorials! I played the violin for 6 years from elementary to high school and "cheated" on my vibrato by performing with "finger" vibrato which my teachers never corrected. I am now 26 and have since come back to the violin and am having to completely re-train my hands' muscle memory. While it is painful and mind numbing to relearn my technique, your videos are making it much simpler than it would have been!
Long story short= Practice, practice, practice the CORRECT technique and save yourself a lot of wasted time!
Thank you for your enthusiasm and instruction!
I am a bit intimidated but I’m obsessed with getting this right where I’m even dreaming about it lol. Thank you so much for your teachings. I love your style👏
Wow thanks! I have been playing violin for 9 years now (I’m only a kid) and I’ve always done vibrato diagonally.. But now, I can do it correctly and I’m going to work very hard to improve it!
@12:55 can you please also show tutorial of vibrato but using the index finger at the e string first fret? i'm struggling there especially during upstroke.
IM TRASH AND I CAN'T DO IT!!!!😡😡😡 HELP!!!
You know this will take months and months and months right? Only practise and perseverance will work.
The Online Piano and Violin Tutor OK. I will keep trying but I can't even make that wailing sound you were talking about. 😕
Again, it will take months and months and months and months. You wont even get that sound in the beginning. You need and must have patience or it will never work.
The Online Piano and Violin Tutor OK. Thank you again.😀
It took me a year to get my finger muscle memory to do vibrato correctly, and continue to practice correct finger position daily. I had a violin teacher make me play with a sewing thread spool in my hand to get my fingers lifted high enough to come straight down, which helps vibrato. He had a pretty vibrato like yours Alison, so with practice, I did too!
I keep moving my violin when i vibrato.ive been playing for a year plz help!!
Perhaps you need more time for the basics to settle in a little more.
I've missed your intro haven't heard it in awhile

I’ve been playing for 5 years and it’s not that I didn’t practice vibrato but it’s that my new teacher didn’t bring it up and kept delaying when we would learn it
But during that first year or so of playing without vibrato, I was touching the neck with the side of the first finger, which i will have to unlearn to to avoid shaking the instrument.when using vibrato.
I really appreciate the help. I've been playing for 6 years and I've gotten into a bad habit because I've been doing vibrato side to side rather than moving up and down and it has caused the correction process to be very difficult. Every time I attempt to do it the right way, it feels like I'm doing it wrong. And now it just sounds bad whenever I try to do vibrato. But I'll keep practicing. Thanks for this video. It's helped a lot more than any other videos I've seen.
What!!!
i played for 3 years. my teacher only brought up vibrator today 😭
Her background tho 😍😍💖
Wow looking good alison
You and my teacher are exactly the same and she taught me the wrist vibrato and I didn't know there's an arm vibrato Lol! I'm gonna combine your technique and hers. Your also right that you have to do vibrato constantly to able to do it and I've been doing it every time I play and I'm getting there. Thanks 🙃
was it easy learning the wrist vibrato how long did it take? I have been playing violin for almost 7/8 years i havent learned vibrato yet xD.
The distance from one note to the next, whether it be a whole note or even a half-note is so insanely close that when the fleshy tip of your finger "rocks or rolls" in either direction, the pitch changes quite drastically compared to any other stringed instrument. Understanding this really helped me with vibrato. I think that people who have been playing stringed instruments for a lifetime will have a little easier time with vibrato than those who are just beginning with the violin as their first musical instrument. Also, whether or not you have developed your "ear" or if you have "perfect pitch".. this will also help with time consumption. Although a guitarist technically does not use "vibrato" (even though a lot of guitarists do NOT know the difference between 'vibrato' and 'tremelo').. I do believe that highly developed fingers and wrists, forearms, etc., are really going to give you an advanced 'edge' ~ at the same time, this particular joint of the finger is rarely isolated on the guitar, so essentially, you will be learning how to use another joint/muscle group that you have really never used before. I practice vibrato every day, all throughout the day. Sometimes I don't even pick up the violin. I just find something to place my fingers correctly and then take the eraser end of a pencil and push that joint of the tip of my finger in and out so that it really gets some 'muscle memory' built up. It may sound stupid, but when I do pick up the violin, I feel like I've already been practicing my vibrato. Unless you are one of those 'double-jointed" people that can extend your fingers and only bend the tips of them (which looks really cool) you will never really have felt the need to use these muscles. Not in typing, keyboard playing, guitar playing... basically nothing. This is why I feel that the violin is so unique. It really seem like the violin was made for total usage of the hand and every muscle in the hand and this is what makes it so difficult. Add in your bowing technique and all of it's nuances it becomes very easy to see why people become so discouraged with trying to learn the violin. It is certainly the MOST difficult stringed instrument for a human to play, but the rewards of consistency and perseverance far surpass the difficult path to its mastery. Great guitarists (IMO) are a 'dime-a-dozen' ~ OTOH, great violinists are a rare species.
I’ve played violin for 3 years and I think it’s time I know how to do this
I workout every day... and when I started violin and was working on vibrato....the next morning my bicep felt like it had been annihilated. Obviously you are a great teacher. I'm just... impatient
Mine feels like that, too! Is this normal, or am I tensing up too much in my upper arm?
I've been playing violin for 4 years and I still can't vibrato good I'll still try but it's discouraging.
Ok, I am still gonna do vibrato even though i have not been playing for a year, I am one of the more advanced people in my school orchestra and I wanna learn vibrato so imma learn it, and I dont care if people say I cant do it cause I will.
Don't give up! You'll feel really proud once you begin to get the hang of it with the vibrato! :D
Very good advice, nice updated video. I'll put my two bobs worth in as it may help some people... As an adult beginner, I also struggled for a long time. I started with wrist vibrato, but would get violin shake, and wrist moving erratically, first joints of fingers hardly moving, etc. Then progress stagnated. If you are the same, I suggest trying arm vibrato, & persevere with it for six months. Initially it feels harder, takes more energy, harder to keep your thumb in same place, & plenty of violin shake. Whats it does is forces the first joints of all fingers to move, the wrist to move slightly, the thumb to be kept in same place, & all arm/hand joints will be learning to have a smooth movement. But, when you return to wrist vibrato, it will be much easier. You must be patient & stick with it, sometimes you have to attack a problem from a different angle. For some, vibrato comes alot easier, others like me, have to try a different approach. Also, as a bonus, you'll have two vibrato techniques which you can use depending on the sound you want. :) Anyway, that's my experience.
I´ve mastered the vibrato after 3 months of playing the violin^^ (it was hard but I wanted it so hard :D) and now it´s easy as f**k (been playing the violin since 2 1/2 years)
euclon1 i mean i did it too
For me, I only practice my vibrato 10 minutes per day so I don't get angry or depressed.
I do the same with my boxing speed bag.
Your brain and body need time to process what you're trying to do.
If you spend too much time per day on vibrato, you'll get frustrated and give up.
I love your teaching, you make it fun and exciting, I've been playing for just over 9 months and at 62 years old soon to be 63 in august I'm like a kid in a candy store.
Ive been playing for over 5 years now and i still cant ☠️☠️
In every video about learning the violin I go to the comments and search for: This helped me a lot, so I know if this will work for me or not, just me? Okay.
i’ve been playing since i was 7/8 and i’m 14 now my teacher has mentioned it only a few months ago so yeah :) xx
11:00 Me at 14 and then shoves the violin in the closet, and then 12 years later works at it for 4 months every day and finally now is getting the hang of it. Thank you Alison, for helping me rekindle my love for the violin :)
this was excellent! helped me to finally get vibrato! woohoo :)
I've been playing for 4 years now, this is my 5th and I need to start doing vibrato, I've been cheating with my finger and I can't to do that anymore.
I started playing the violin 2 or 3 month s ago but kinda give up ‘cus I couldn’t do the vibrato correctly (i know the basics already) and it kinda discouraged me. This video is very informative and makes me want to play the violin again.
I learned almost all of I know from the videos you made. Thank you so much!!
This is the way I started learning vibrato but recently I was watching others teach it with their thumb on the side and rolling the finger forward and back (rather than sided to side). I was beginning to think maybe I should relearn it. Thanks for the reassurance that I am on the right track!
thanks a lot for this💓💓💓
the only reason i can do vibrato is cause of this😁 cant really do it well but i will continue to work on it thanks!
Wonderfully done video. And I appreciate your realistic expectations. We aren't meant to get it over night, and that is encouraging. With consistent work, I believe I will get it! Thank you!
Seen lots of videos (like 15 or so), all of them gave me 0, or almost any additional progress.
Yours did! Even thoe i understand I have to polish the basics, I can now manage to understand it and so work on it.
Thank yu!
Ma'am your teaching style is really amazing 😍😍. Since childhood I always wanted to learn violin. I was never confident that I will be able to learn it myself. It's all because of you ma'am I am able to learn it is a very efficient way. Thank you sooo much ❤️
Can you teach us how to speed up the vibrato?
This video shows you placing your left thumb directly under the neck of the violin (to support the violin, I'm sure) but it seems that most people learn to initially play with the neck resting between the thumb and index finger. Do you intentionally shift your thumb under the neck to create vibrato, then shift back to continue playing, or do you always play that way? I'm having difficulty playing in tune when I keep my thumb under the neck.
I play and teach that way. Some teachers teach with the thumb as you explain. In that case you may benefit from learning arm vibrato instead.
My problem is my wrist doesn't bend like that when my LH is on the fingerboard and violin on my shoulder. Flexibility problem. Anyone else have this problem?
this really helped, I used to think I had to move my wrist forward and back for vibrato now I know its to the side which really helped me. Thank you Alison.
I was going on a wrong way of vibrato. But after watching your video I got the right way.Thank you sooo much dear teacher 👍👍😍😍😍😍😍😍👏👏👏👏👏👏❤❤❤❤
This woman is fabulous and no nonsense. I love British accents too :) you inspired me to buy a violin again a twenty year hiatus and here I am practicing!!!
Sana ol marunong mag vibrato!!
😂
Sana all
Wow , really amazing tips and guidance , thank you so so much .. please publish more ... I don't have any teacher for learning. Your videos are really helpful for me .
I was really upset I can't do vibrato properly. After hearing your explanation, all my worries disappeared. Newbie aspiring violinist here. 😊
Ik some of you want to learn Vibrato early then your ready for. I'm there along with you but if we waste our time doing stuff we are not ready for we are missing out on all the good practice we could be getting instead. I'm focused on doing my scales and and I'm going to put vibrato on hold till I'm more ready. In the mean time I'm going to look at what she suggested. I`m still trying to figure out if I can use a rubber thimble , My fingers are stiff as a ball glove this does help though I thought I was just terrible at it --Ok OK I am LOL.
Making an instruction video about vibrato is challenging, as this skill screams for personal instruction. But this video well covers the attendant issues.
Vibrato is also a very personal thing, and defines who you are and the way you "speak" in the music sense.
Danm, I still can't do the vibrato. I've been playing the violin since at the end of last year! !🎻🎻🎻
My violin won't shake much if I hold it tightly on my neck, but if I didn't do that it would shake too much, did I start too early? Thank you for your video by the way it's very informative :)
Says in the fist minute of the video when to start, plus there is a link to another video underneath as to when to start vibrato.
Yey I did it
Dying whale 😂😂😂 I'll remember that when my daughter gets to that point in her lessons!
I am a teacher of many years and I want so badly to watch all of your videos.... what I have such a hard time is with how verbose they are. I wish sometimes there were advanced vids for musicians without all of the dialogue. I don't mean for that comment to be malicious. I just get ants in my pants... I just want you to start with something we are looking for (like playing a piece to grab our attention) and then break it down, point by point... with just a few simple audible tips. It's just an opinion...
Thank you for your comment, but I don't agree. Being impatient to get to the point only ends in disaster as you don't get or see the whole picture. If you cant wait, then you can skip the video or speed it up.
All the dialogue is necessary for thorough and proper teaching of vibrato. Missing those important parts will leave the student now knowing enough about it - hence why problems develop down the line.
Because of the medium of video, I have to adapt my teaching somewhat as its one sided - there is no interaction from the student. Im teaching and reaching a wide variety of people of all backgrounds and ages and countries - not just you - or any one individual.
If i made my videos so targeted like that, then they would be useless and unpopular and only appeal to a very small audience.
Also, remember these videos are 100% free and would cost a lot to pay a local teacher to tell you the same thing... 😀
P.s being in a hurry to learn the violin, wont end well...take your time and you will progress faster and be much better.
@@TheOnlineViolinTutor ~ sorry. I"ve been playing guitar for over 40 years. Started as a baby basically. I shouldn't have said what I did. I'm still watching your videos. My mistake was in the fact that thinking there would be this great "crossover" effect, which there is in many aspect (E, A, D , G) .a developed ear, picking out scales, trills, etc... the biggest issue is that the kind of vibrato used and required on the violin has absolutely NO effect on the guitar, so in essence, I have to back up and regroup. I want to retract my statement because at this point, I am only watching your videos. I found that I completely contradicted myself with my comment and I apologize. I teach like you do and I always get criticized because students just want things to happen 'yesterday"... no basics, no patience. Again, my apologies. You rock and you are now may FAVORITE violin teacher.
vibrato should be a part of day one!
It is not rocket science and the fear which is built up around it only makes it more difficult psychologically.
You pick up the instrument and on your first gotdammed note u try to vibrate. No one teaches you the complex movements required to masturbate, boy or girl. Vibrato is not much different. !! Everybody ,,,,,,,,,,Vibrate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My forearm hurts when I try vibrato, is this normal or am I just too tense? My wrist isn't as flexible as I'm now 72 and started playing the violin at 69. Your videos are great but I get frustrated when it sounds so awful. I keep trying but I don't seem to improve beyond the police siren. 😢
Well, I come from the guitar, been playing electric guitar half my life, and it took me 4 years to learn proper vibrato on the guitar... The principles seems to be the same... Although I've been playin the violin for solid 4 days, so what do I know. So please correct me if I'm wrong
Very well demonstrated!! Thank you so much.
Thanks for knowledge miss.. Godbless you.. warm greeting from Indonesia
Ive been playing for 4 years and still have not gotten it
I've played violin for 3 years I'm stuck on vibrato but I'm confused.
Alison has a lovely vibrato!
This really helped, thank you!
Everybody teaches vibrato differently. That swaying wrist motion? A doctor of music on YT teaches it that way.
thanks ive been trying consistently for 2 months just to get the basic vibrato on one note. No progress for weeks though ... glad its not just me was getting quite demoralised
I tried watching other videos... I’m not leaving this channel anymore
Just looking at what vibrato even is as I'm a beginner and I think now that I know, I will just wait a couple more months before attempting😭
5 months still no vibrato... Someday... Thanks
I like your lession very much.
It's a hight quality.
Thank you .
My thumb is to stiff , I can’t get below the finger board. Naturally wants to go above and almost wrap around it
This is your own way to make vibrato? I mean your own style? Cause it looks (and pretty cool) different than the vibrato other professors show for beginners
No. It is wrist vibrato.
There is wrist vibrato, and arm vibrato. Both are correct - neither are wrong.
It depends on how you hold your violin as to which one you will do.
At least practice the movement for vibrato so you don’t develop bad habits that will affect your vibrato later on.
I played for 4 years and my teacher has not brought up vibrato and it is very difficult
The tune you played isn't originally by Elvis ;)
I love this channel I fixed a lot of mistakes I was making thanks ❤️
Ok. I have two weeks of experience. I leave. See you soon
I just want someone to tell me I have the right motion but I think I am able to do wrist vibrato but I am still very bad but do I just need to practice more?
Dr no words to explain....... Wanna teach violin under ur guideline
Will you please post the checklist that you mention in the video? Thank you!
Thank you so much! I finally got the main concept of vibrato after watching tons of other videos, and I'm required to have it down by the time I audition for the top orchestra in my school. The tip about turning your wrist around and using the top of your finger helped in particular!
This is a great video and has put me on the right track !!! Thanks very much !
Your thumb is over extended, my thumb wont do that what should i do
I can’t do wrist vibrato just arm vibrato but my teacher wants me to do wrist because it’s used more
*I Always Watched Your Video Since I don't Have a Violin Because I Play Piano But Now That I'm Learning Violin You Helped me so much to Understand now You have A Sub.*

Thank you! :)
