  • This week, we are talking about a much requested subject...vibrato. It’s not surprising there have been so many questions and comments about it as vibrato is one of the most tricky things for string players to develop. Learning and building the fundamentals of this technique early on can be challenging.
So, why is it so important? This video takes you on an exploration of the different ways vibrato can be played and will leave you with some exercises to help develop the basic vibrato movements. Whether you’ve been doing vibrato for 2 months or 2 years, these exercises are great - I still use them today!
Join in live or online with the Benedetti Foundation at www.benedettif...
The videos have been generously supported by ESTA UK, MiSST - The Andrew Lloyd Webber Programme, and Oasby Music Group and I am very grateful for their support.
Huge thanks to our media partners Classic FM, The Strad, The Violin Channel and WQXR who will be sharing the videos with their audiences each week when released.
Finally, these videos wouldn’t have been possible without an amazing team: Scott Jaeger, our film maker, Laura Gardiner, our Education Manager, Rebecca Driver, PR Manager and Hannah King, Online Media Manager. I want to say a huge thank you to all four of them for being with me on this journey.

Hi Nicky, I managed to do a vibrato yesterday on all 4 fingers for the first time and to be honest, I was expecting the sound of a pneumatic drill but got the complete opposite😁. It was a fast and narrow vibrato where my left hand and fingers were relaxed. The only lessons I had was for Bb clarinet!

It is impossible to speak or sing without vibrato. It is a natural part of the human voice. It activates the human ear and creates interest in communication. Vibrato reduces the feeling of space between the voice and the listener.

I CURRENTLY DONT USE A SHOULDER OR CHIN REST, BUT TO ANY BEGINING VIBRATO ENTHUSIAST, I WOULD HEARTILY RECOMMEND BOTH CHIN AND SHOULDER RESTS SO YOU DONT CHOKE THE VIOLIN NECK, AND IF COMFORTABLE THE RESTS WILL ENABLE YOUR HANDS TO FLY. PLUS YOU WONT WORRIE AS MUCH ABOUT DROPPING THE VIOLIN. I MAY IF I FIND ONE BUY A LIBERO SHOULDER REST. BUT REMEMBER, ANYTHING THAT ATTCHES TO THE VIOLIN TENDS TO DAMPEN THE TONE. BEFOR 1850, THERE WERE NO CHIN RESTS! GET SOME EVA PIRAZZIS, IF YOU DONT ALREADY AND THEN TRY VIBRATO! YOUR FINGERS WILL BE MUCH MORE COMFORTABLE. GET THAT BRIDGE AS LOW AS YOU CAN, MAYBE SAVE THE OLD AS IS AND PUT ON A NEW LOWER HEIGHT BRIDGE. I CERTAINLY AM GLAD I GOT INTO BRIDGE CARVING!, I NOW MAKE MY VERY OWN CUSTOM BRIDGES. WATCH THE DAVIDE SOLA IN CREMONA B R IGE CARVING START TO FINISH, AND YOU WILL LEARN HOW VITAL THE BRIDGE IS TO THE SOUND AND ENJOYMENT OF THE VIOLIN. SINCERELY CHRIS E. USA. HAPPY VIBRATO!😂

Richard, I wanted to let you know I decided to get serious about playing like a true violinist. I started when I was 10 with a wonderful teacher, then set it down again for 10 years. Then I picked it up for a country rock band, then set it down for another 15 years. I picked it up again 15 years ago playing in another pop-rock group but only played part-time as the guitar was more necessary. Now I am 66 retired and finally trying to learn vibrato having never done it before. So take heart friend there is at least one more senior trying to do a difficult thing. Thank God, Nicky is so expansive with her explanations and techniques.

(Oh God...I simply L-O-V-E your accent!) ...'rocking the fingers' without rocking the rest of the whole damn violin (viola in my case) is the fundamental issue sadly circumscribing my otherwise near imminent rise to 'world class virtuoso' ...all of the video clips you provided (including 'lil ol' me' & 'slightly bigger me' (....by comparison I might be described as something more akin to Austen Powers' 'Mini-me')...) illustrated violinists bowing an instrument that appeared to be set in proverbial concrete while they applied vibrato...somewhere in my 'rocking' action....I am failing to isolate the rocking motion to the string..... the position of your supporting thumb and the vector angle of the pressure you supply through it ....must be somehow vastly different from mine I suspect..... I cannot quite see what you are doing that is different to what (I think at any rate) I am doing myself.....

    3:30 Wow! What a revelation! 😲
Well, that explains why I can’t do a true wrist/arm vibrato in the six years of playing the violin! The reason being, I only play the violin in the first position; and that's by choice. I can do a fake finger vibrato, but that doesn’t count.
As for a true vibrato, I reserve that for my brass and woodwind instruments that I also play. The vibrato that I can't do on the violin I make up for on my diatonic harmonicas, for example, playing with feeling, phrasing, note bending, vibrato, and all that good stuff. 😉 🎻 ♫

Nice video. Personally, I have just been using the exercises in Simon Fischer's Basic book but the basic idea is the same to practice duple, triple, etc. Just wondering do you have a tip on how to transfer all that practice into a violin piece? I find when playing actual pieces, the hand just freezes up instead of the loose and relax mode when practicing just the vibrato exercises.
Side note: Would love to see you teaching a masterclass session and play a concert or 2 here in Melbourne Australia :)

In the second video, you demonstrated a few different type of vibrato depending on the music. I was wondering if you could talk about the different speed and width of your own vibrato. Eg. The number of oscillations of your fast and slow vibratos. Is it something that needs to be worked on during practise (ie the learning of the narrower motion and quickier motion).

ITS just my student instrument but seems well to emulate dare I say your Strad. Was wondering what the vibrating length was on your Strad, but am guessing somewhere near 334mm vibrating length. Great lesson I m amazed at what an inexpensive violin can do! I'm sounding like Dark Shadows now! It's kind of eery! But also kind of cool! I'm sure I must have had my great grandfathers violin off by a mile on bridge location. Wow! It's taken in excess of 40 years to finally figure that out! Bye for now. I'm starting to love my sound.😅

Hi Nicola! 5 30 24 Thurs. From C.E. u.s.a. I am calm. And serene! Drinking 1/2 cup Partana olive oil and I feel great! I'm on a new diet. Yesterday zuchini, green beans. Parsley, celery, chop up equal piles simmer in approx 1 pint water for 20 min. Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Continue same for 3 days if possible. I haven't managed to but it's a liver.and.kideny cleanser. I am calm. Have great day, buy.😅😅

1:50 pm Sat. 7 14 24, from c.e. usa. HI Nicola! Just got through practicing probably 45min. Out side. Using bicycle handle bar to support violin while I give vibrato a try. Seems to work pretty well. Only criticism I have against it is allowing scroll to dip down. But it's OK f or vibrato exercise. Trying out new captains chair grip. Tone pretty good. Bye for now.😅

Hi Nicky, spent morning reviewing the drinking glass mechanics of vibrato.holding the glass in reverse is vibrato. Spent late afternoon listening to sonny and cherr the beat goes on. According to Sonny he wrote it himself. I think It will become a classic! So I did the best I could to mimmick the song on my violin. It was OK. Didn't move me like there version but I felt inspired. I also am tinkering with my bows to incurred tonal bliss. Then after dinner I watched the slow motion Menuhin vibrato vidios I like Kogan and that French guy. I've noticed Pinkus Zukerman seems to have a hand pattern similar to yours. ERGO THE THIRD FINGER ASSIST TO THE FOURTH AND THE FINGER GROUPINGS ETC. I THINK I DID WELL TO UNDERSTAND THE WATERGLASS TRICK. I THOUGHT IT WAS THE PALM THAT PIVOTED BUT IT LOOKS LIKE THE REAL ROTATION COMES FROM THUMB. THE REST OF THE TIME ITS THE FINGER JOINTS. WELL THATS HOW I OBSERVED IT. LONG DAY, RETIRING FOR THE EVENING. JUST WANTED YOU TO KNOW I WAS PRACTICING. IM SO PROUD OF MYSELF. BYE FOR NOW. 12 5 2023 838PM.

Hi Nicola! It's an honour to have my comment up there! It's 7 2 24 and I've just had a run through with the basic vibrato exercises here at 10:43 concluding. I'm using a 1 1/4 length rubber band transverse cross over my bow to secure my middle and ring ringers. I'm sounding extremely close to your beautiful instrument except my timing is weak. This afternoon I will give a run through I think I'll say.. by O.N.J. I'm so proud of myself! I give myself two gold stars. It's so wonderful to have you for a teacher! Thumb and pinky pinched together to pry index and2nd finger apart at the web. Of hand. I WILL BE READING FROM THESE EXERCISES BY RITCHY AND WATCHING YOUR LESSONS BOTH. DID YOU KNOW THAT YOU CAN PUT TOOTHPASTE ON YOUR FLOSS TO GO BETWEN YOUR TEETH? I LEARNED THIS FROM A LADY DENTIST OVER THE INTERNET, SO IM GOUNG TO TRY THIS TOMORROW WHEN ITS COOL IN THE A.M. The left side of my neck feels like I swallowed a jaw breaker. I'm otherwise very happy I'm sounding similar to you! It's almost startling. It's going to be very hot in an hour or so. Projected 113 degrees! I may not feel up to lessons later today. I'm reading about Antonio Stradivaris life's work. He apparently used Hematite for burnishing. The author did not say what material was to be burnished. The Hematite was shaped like a canine tooth the book related. I'm thinking maybe he used it.for the nicks in the bridge for the strings. I'm using a modifyed bridge with holes bored up😅 through the feet. There 1 sixteenth ,there are about 3 holes. The rest of the bridge is carved by myself according to Davide Sola in Cremona. I STILL WOULD BE GREATFUL TO YOU NIKKI IF YOU COULD SELL ME SOME GUILLAUME ROSIN, IM NOT ABLE TO FIND IT LOCALLY. ANYWAY SHE SINGS. ITS UNCANNY! SHES OPENING UP. I reviewed Heather's easier way to do vibrato but for some reason putting my left palm on the upper bout seems awkward. I like the back the way up the way reinforcement with second finger better. I think I only practiced 15 min. Along with you and it seems to work out better that way. I will be patient. I'm trying to end my session at 5:00pm local time. Thank you very much for the lesson.😅

Well Nicola, I tryed rubbing beeswax on my violin strings and the result was ice skating. I'm just a dumb bunny. I should have reasoned that any lubricant rubbed onto a violin string is disastrous! SO I am sorry for anyone I may have tempted to rub wax or any sort onto their strings. I'm sorry, I blundered. But I did learn from this episode. Any soap or wax will ruin the grip of the bow on the string. Your loyal student, chris e. Usa.7 12 24. I guess Richey was wrong. But he does have some pretty good exercises for the fingers. Imsorry for.any trouble I may have caused. I really thought wax would lessen any harshness from the tone on my strings. Anyway that's what I learned today on violin bloopers.😅

7 5 24 from c.e. usa, hello Nicola, I have analyzed what your doing with your wrist during vibrato. To me, your using wrist vibrato supplemented by a slight arm vibrato, augmented by distal finger vibrato. In my humble opinion I should so emulate Heathers knock, slide, rock procedure. My wrist is stiff and does not rotate as well as yours. This was a very telling lesson in that You are true to your word that you use various methods of vibrato. Great lesson! See you later! Bye😅

HI, NIKKI! FROM YOUR LOYAL STUDENT IN GRANTS PASS, OR. USA. IVE HAD TO CLEAN MY EVA PIRAZZIS, THE HIGH E WAS LOOKING RUSTED, SO I USED A DROP OF EUCALYPTUS OIL ON A COFFEE FILTER AND GENTLY SWABBED THE OLD ROSIN AWAY. I THEN PROCEEDED TO play my rendition of abbas the visitors. IM AMAZED, MY INSTRUMENT IS NOW A SONG BIRD WITH THESE EVA PIRAZZIS. THEVE BEEN ON MY VIOLIN 3 OR 4 DAYS NOW AND THE WAXY FEEL HAS GONE, I MAY HAVE RUINED THEM BUT THEY SEEM TO MATCH ABBA OVERTONES CONSONANTS AND VOWELS AND REMARKABLY SMOOTH! THANK YOU AGAIN! NIKKI ,I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR STRINGS LIKE THIS FOR A LONG TIME., BUT JUST DIDNT KNOW HOW GOOD THEY COULD BE. THEY ARE SO SENSITIVE, THAT THE CLEANING PAPER STRUMMED SEVERAL OCTAVES. ITS WILD, ITS UNCANNY! NO WONDER POBABLY MORE MUSICIANS USE EVA PIRAZZI THAN ANY OTHER VIOLIN STRING? THAT MAY BE EXAGERATED BUT I THINK IT MIGHT NOT BE TOO FAR FROM THE TRUTH. MY NEXT BIG CONQUEST? GAMMA GUT! SO I CAN WOLLOW IN BAROQUE. THANK YOU AGAIN NIKKI! YOUVE MADE ME A VIOLINIST! AND AS LEO. HOURBACH 16:1said it must sing! But he wasn't about to tell me how.
