Who Was Walt Disney? | The Boss

  • We all think of Walt Disney as the original "owner" of the Disney company. For all intents and purposes, he was the boss. However, what exactly was his role in the company? We know he didn't own the company, it was a public company. He wasn't the CEO, his brother was. And Walt wasn't technically the only man in charge...so HOW did he stay in charge?

Some of my videos are designed to persuade you to see things from my perspective, however I have videos such as this one, that aren't designed to persuade, instead it's meant to just relay the truth objectively. Walt Disney was a flawed man, he was far from perfect. He wasn't evil or greedy or power-hungry...but he wasn't sweet, and sympathetic. No...instead he was most importantly, empathetic. He could understand how people felt, and he could put himself in their shoes, this is what lead him to do kind things for others, but as a boss, he also didn't believe in baby'ing you. So if you were having a bad day for example, he would not sit with you and talk through your problems, he would bark "whassamatter with you?! Buck up! You're bringin' everyone down!" ...But then later you might receive a hand-signed note from him encouraging you to keep your head up. I say this because Walt wasn't a saint, nor was he the devil, he wasn't good nor evil. He was a person, not a god, and videos like this remind you that he existed in a reality different from ours today. He may be "Disney" but he could be as prickly as a cactus.

Yep. I really appreciate your nuance take. I find with so many historical figures, there's a tendency to either paint them as one extreme or the other, and both extremes are equally problematic.

In fact I even sent a letter to them and just two days ago I got it back and even they said that they still honner his idea for change. @Kevin Kunzmann ...true but...its not like Chapek can just pull 2 million dollars out of his pocket and say "here, build this new thing". It doesn't work that way, you can't donate your own money towards a Disney Park project. Walt did it because he was Walt.

Thanks. I tried something different with the narration in this episode. More specifically, I tried a different breathing technique during my narration. To prevent people from hearing me breathe, I took breaths between sentences and then carefully cut out the sound of my breaths. But the result was kind of disappointing because taking breaks meant that I lost "momentum" and so the narration ended up sounding low-energy when I played it back with all the cuts. That's ok though, that's why I experiment once in a while, to see what works and what doesn't work. I'm going to go back to my usual narrating and breathing techniques.

He was a visionary businessman. Conservative. Enjoyed smoking and his happy hour drinks. He was a loving husband, who doted on his daughters, He raised an empire on his drive for imagination, and quickly became bored with projects, which led to new ideas, ventures and business ventures. He knew what he wanted, and most importantly what he didn’t want. He loved art and demanded his artists reach for higher standards in their work. He was very pro-capitalism and anti socialism. He didn’t trust many, because he was frequently burnt. From the loss of Oswald the Rabbit, to the loss of the sense of loyalty from his animators after the studio strike. He truly was respected and inspired many; very few men have received the accolades by former employees as Walt Disney. Volumes have been written about him. Disney was very much a product of his era, to say he was flawed is wrong, because he was held to a much higher standard that he even admitted he couldn’t live up to- he knew the essential conflict with him and his Uncle Walt image. He was complicated in his demands and vision, but often very simple in his tastes. He did so much, he inspired so many, he created and often redefined an entertainment industry. He was Walt Disney

See she was waiting for the fireworks as a little girl and she saw Walt across the street. She went over to him and he held her hand and said "My darling." even though they had never met before. Thumbs up to Alex again. Always learning something new from this guy... Always. He knows his S*!!!
However... (for the first time ever)
For the first time since I've discovered his channel (about a year ago maybe), I MUST disagree with the first 1/3 of his documentary.
Boy, you're boiling it down to B&W and grey like too many others before you. Plz don't do this.
Walt had a very keen sense of business. He simply needed help (his bro). Roy had a definite place. And our world would be less without Roy. But Walt Disney knew the cost of a freakin penny. He always did. And to say that somehow Walt was oblivious is to follow in the footsteps of the youtubers that came before this decade or before your channel. To say that somehow Walt was so fixed on creating magic that he couldn't see any bottom line is totally incorrect. Walt knew that quality equals money. Walt always knew a dollar counted. Walt knew that his creation would make a "few" bucks. DL would have happened with or without Roy. Not trying to be a dWad here. But DL was going to happen with or without Roy counting Dollar bills.
(ETA: the ticket system came from Walt)
Where was Roy during the creation of SWATSD (film)? Where was Roy when Walt didn't want DL to be a filthy carnival? Where was Roy when Walt wanted a merged form of entertainment (very new concept at the time as we all know today). ...???
Where was Roy in 1959, an expansion ...while building an off kilter mountain coaster attraction that Walt Disney never thought DL should have had in the first place? Did Roy tell him this was best did Roy say this works? Did Roy say this will make bank? During the world's fair, what did Roy say? One more pavilion? Just one more? Who met with the sponsors? Who said OK? Bringing back it's a small world to DL?
Nope. Walt decided this for himself with input from *creative* people. Where was Roy when Walt expanded the 9 old men? Where was Roy BEFORE the 9 old men? Roy wasn't absent; Roy just wasn't there at the time. Roy wasn't in some back room filing papers and counting pennies to keep DL on track. Walt was keeping DL on track. Roy wasn't reeling Walt in most of the time. It's some bs narrative from ******* who wrote a non confirmed book. And for some reason, it's now truth. It's so incorrect that I couldn't disagree less. Or more. Or sideways. Or on an E-ticket attraction. lol, trying to be funny. Sorry. :)
I say this with so much respect. I know it sounds like I'm an obsessive fan boy, but I'm telling you how it really was. Your sources are wrong and too thin on this aspect of Walt.... Just the first third of your documentary.
Either way, I adore your productions.
You've seen my comments (or can go back and look). ...but it's not that cut n dry. Never has been.
All that money-making came from Walt's vision. Not always from his brother. But don't think for one second that Roy wasn't gifted with creativity too... That's another rant of mine.
    Luvya Alex. You're awesome.
    :D
His bro may have crossed Ts and dotted Is and carries the 1. But Walt knew business. He couldn't have gotten as far as July 17th 1955 on his own... OR WITH HIS BROTHER.

    • @AlextheHistorian
      @AlextheHistorian  3 года назад

Well take into consideration I mostly said that Walt liked to spend a lot and he didn't enjoy running the business aspect of the company, both of which are true. But as for saying that he didn't know the value of a dollar, didn't know how to run a business, and that Walt couldn't accomplish anything on his own...I never said such things, that's all your interpretation of my vague wording.
Keep in mind, this video is not meant to be all-encompassing...its not meant to be the end-all, be-all, of Walt Disney's businessman attributes. This is a video series, and so each episode focuses on a teeny-tiny aspect of him. This video was less about his business-mindset, as it was more about what he did or didn't do, and how he felt about his employees. Other videos will focus more on his frugality, his temperament, his business decision-making, his family, his brotherhood, his childhood....a whole range of topics.
But most certainly, I did not insinuate that Walt Disney was an incompetent and careless businessman who required his brother for everything. That was all your interpretation of my words.

But he didn't do those things out of hate, and as he got older, and as the civil rights movement changed things, he changed with the times as well. I'm no expert, but I have spent a good part of my life reading and learning about Walt. I am very certain, based on the characterizations given by minorities who worked with him and knew him personally, that nothing he did came from a place of hatred or prejudice. Certainly, there were insensitive stereotypes and many things that are unacceptable by modern standards. I wish people would look into these accusations before they accept them as truth. He was hardly a perfect human, and of course I didn't know him, but I have never found any real evidence of Walt being racist or anti-semitic.
