Hi there! I just found your channel yesterday when searching for how to handle stripped screws. I’ve now watched quite a few of your videos and they are all great! Your content is so easy to understand and follow, super informative, and all kept to a reasonable length. I’d also like to let you know that I appreciate that you aren’t following the same formula as everyone else with the “hey, guys”… “and, be sure to click that ‘like’, ‘follow’”, blah blah blah 😁 … I appreciate that you just get in there and start on the content directly without all that nonsense! But, you’re clever in giving us a “next video” to watch. Love, love, love your channel and can’t wait to watch and learn even more from you!

I'm a huge fan of the squeeze tube spackle that comes in like a large toothpaste shaped container with tip on it. You can just squeeze however much you need and you dont have all that waste compared to using buckets of spackle. Its also less messy. If you have 300 finish nail holes to fill with spackle, it's definitely faster to use a squeeze tube.

Thank you for posting this excellent video. I really appreciate it. Some years ago, a very long time ago, a friend asked me to patch a large broken section of drywall in his house. He and his family had just moved in and some furniture had hit the drywall. I did fix it for him, and it was acceptable to him and his family. But I did not do the job with any of the sophistication that you demonstrate here. I didn't have any concept of using a primer coat, for example. So if I ever need to fix drywall again, which I think is unlikely, I will consider reviewing this video an essential part of the process, before I begin. Thank you for demonstrating this so well.

I’ve long been a fan of the Pink stuff from Dap, but you are right on size of the repair. I have used the stuff on slightly larger patches, and it will work, with the right touch. Obviously bigger holes/patches go with ‘GP’ mud for taping/ initial filling, and finish with ‘PLUS 3’ for second and even final skim coat(s).
Of course there are many brands out there, so go with what You know. YMMV 👍

Great video. I would recommend using a hot mud like 5 or 20 min for faster drying times.

  • @Sylvan_dB
    @Sylvan_dB 4 месяца назад +2

This is a great demonstration. One flaw - you complain about the time the joint "mud" takes to cure without pointing out the solution. You don't have to use pre-mixed joint compound. You can use powder and mix up just as much as you need. The powder keeps forever if you keep it dry, but the big advantage is you can buy your desired cure time as low as 5 minutes. I usually buy the 20 minute stuff.

I can actually hear someone in the background, "Dammit, honey stop putting holes in our walls!" I caught the joke about shrinkage in the pool, and all I can say is that's a complete, and total myth! You can't prove that, LOL. All jokes aside though, thank you for your insight with this stuff because it's incredibly helpful. I just wish I knew about it BEFORE I gouged a huge hole in the wall from ripping out one of those drywall anchor screws. Thankfully though, the entire room it's in is going to be my testing room for an almost complete drywall teardown/replacement.
I want to do the ceiling, and 3 of the walls because the 4th wall will be part of a much bigger reno later down the road. All I have to do is talk my wife into buying a drywall hoist, and a few odds, ends, and materials, and I'll be good to go. Hopefully I don't break the house in the process. Especially since my old nickname used to be "broke it trying to fix it." 🤣

Any primer which is suitable for use on new (bare) drywall and plaster should be fine. I use a spray can of Zinsser 1-2-3 which dries to cover in 30 minutes. Zinsser has a lot of spray primers, but most (maybe all but one?) are oil based. I've also used B-I-N which is a white shellac (alcohol based).

That's going to be a problem. There will be minimal strength in that area. If you don't need a lot of strength, you can maybe use body cast bandages (cloth strips with plaster) that you wet and stuff into the hole and etc. But repaired drywall is never very strong...

@@matty63209 Another thought about drywall repair... People run into this problem with towel bars (like bath/shower towel bars) and do need some structure to hold that bar after the repair. Maybe you will be able to find some hints that direction.
When I repaired a towel bar (no my boy, it is not a pullup bar!) it took three tries. The third time I opened up the wall enough to put a 1x4 board behind the drywall that spanned the problem area and gave me a solid surface to fasten the towel bar. The board was fastened behind the drywall using standard drywall screws well away from the damaged area.

Not sure what kind of texture you're looking for, but there's stuff you can buy in a can literally called "Wall Texture" from Homax where you spray it on the wall and, depending on the type of Wall Texture you bought (there are at least two for different looks) it could be the texture you're looking for. The ones I know about are Orange Peel and Knockdown. Be sure to read the instruction before using.

Can you drill into and put a screw through the product you used? I had to force a wall plug out of my wall which made the hole bigger. I need to repair it then put a wall plug through it again in exactly the same place as before.

Generally, I don't like to install hardware into the patch unless it has backing or blocking because it's likely to come loose again. You can replace a wall plug with a bigger toggle as long as it has enough drywall to support the toggle.

Why not just cut the brown paper so that the hole looks like the other holes? Use a box cutter to cut a square hole in the paper, but not deep into the gypsum. Then use the joint compound over that.
Is there a reason we can't simply remove the brown paper so that the hole looks like the other holes in this video?

If you wanted to set your channel apart from the rest, show how to do complete wall repairs for finished walls (which is what 90+% of us are working with). What is always missing is the pre-paint texturing that you almost always find on finished walls. No matter how good your drywall repair and how good your paint matches it will never look right if there is not the same texture on the wall. Most of the time equipment can be rented to do the job, but it does increase the cost. With everything a 1 x 1 foot hole repair was about $150 (which is less than half what a landlord might charge to do the same repair). I have yet to find a channel that mentions this critical element. Otherwise, very helpful video, thanks.

BTW, when a hole has been broken OUTWARDS, I find it easy to use the rounded handle of a Phillips screwdriver, so I can gently tap the Phillips end with a hammer, pushing the divot inwards. Convex to concave in seconds, and with nice control.
