  • Ever wanted to learn how to make an elegant inlay pendant, ring, or earrings that weren’t just chip inlay? This two-part tutorial will go over a simple flush-cut inlay that will open the doors for your work in silversmithing and lapidary.
Part 1 will go over the silversmithing portion, where I walk you through bending your wire for the framework, soldering all of the pieces together, then cleaning it all up in preparation for the stones. Part 2 is all about the lapidary work, where you will choose your stones, make a template for your design, cut your stones, glue, then cut again and polish it all up to wear! What’s so great about this simple pendant tutorial is that it is so versatile: the general concept could easily be translated to a ring, earrings, or the center piece for a cuff bracelet!
The next tutorial I’ll be working on is a simple pillow inlay (also called a cobblestone inlay), so subscribe to my channel to stay in the loop!

Thanks for the kind words, Karie! I'll be working on a few more this month (time permitting, haha!) Glad you've been getting something out of them, if you have any suggestions, just let me know and I'll add it to my list of tutorial ideas.

These videos are awesome! As a person with some experience, many videos drag because the presenter is trying to include beginners. Thank you! Also was interested in the 3M wheel- I’ve been searching for smaller versions of what we use in the polishing shop at the craft center. I was wondering about the mandrel you used as well. Again, thanks! You might consider offering courses. In the East it’s hard to find anything lapidary. Metalwerx does video courses…perhaps…. Or you may be able to offer it up to your audience soon.

Thanks for the positive feedback, Donna! I knew going in that I didn’t want to waste y’alls time, so I tried to compress as much info in as short of a video as possible. It’s sad that there’s really a lack of more intermediate/advanced lapidary techniques on RUclips so I’m hoping to keep filling those gaps.
I do plan on teaching soon (I’m also on the east coast in Tampa), and was going to do some classes at the Tampa Bay Mineral and Science Club but I don’t think the demand for this class is quite there yet. I am thinking of teaching at William Holland once my baby is a little older! :) but I’m doing some Zoom one-on-one sessions in the meantime

Specifically what model of 3M wheel are you using to bevel the edges? Beautiful work, thank you so much.

Thank you! And you’re absolutely welcome. So I use Rio’s 3M wheel, here’s the link for it: www.riogrande.com/product/3m-unitized-112-wheel-fine/330561?code=330561
You’ll need a bigger mandrel for it though and I don’t know what size it is offhand because I got it from a workshop years ago. If you go find me on IG at @c.albritton.jewelry I can send you pictures of it through DM then you might have to do a little digging through Rio ;)

I hope you dont mind .. I am looking to try to inlay into a knife handle........I have a background in machining engineered plastics..art is hard but cool is doable

Hey Michael, if you have some experience making cabochons and have done some calibration, a knife handle is simple! You can get blanks at a variety of places, but get one that has a handle that doesn’t have to warp/bend in order to lock it open.
Do you have a style knife you had in mind or a certain stone you wanted to use? You can always reach out if you’re having trouble
