There's nothing like treasure-hunting. And I'm not talking about metal detecting for wedding rings long-lost on the beach, but looking for Mother Nature's treasures: rocks and minerals!
But once you have that high of finding them, they mostly end up in a box somewhere floating in attics or garages around the world, out of sight of being "oohed" and "ahhed" at.
It's time to change that! Let's take those hunks of raw material and turn them into something shiny and pretty!
My RUclips channel will be devoted to lapidary and silversmithing (my specialty is inlay jewelry) tutorials, where I'll go step-by-step along the way because yes, you can quite literally polish a turd (well, coprolite, that is). Hope you enjoy!

How to Make a Cuff Bracelet Bending Tool
Просмотров 1,6 тыс.7 месяцев назад
While you could struggle with shaping your inlay cuff bracelets on a bracelet mandrel with a rawhide hammer, you won’t wear your shoulder out with this-and you won’t destroy your triangle wire for your inlay cuff bracelets in the process either ;) Even if you’re not doing inlay cuffs, silversmiths will find this tool very useful for moving thick gauges of metal for any cuff bracelet. If you’d r...
How to Make Matte Cabochons
Просмотров 54110 месяцев назад
When I first saw some matte cabs of Rosarita that Gary B. Wilson cut, I knew I had to try to figure this technique out! Before all the purists come out of the woodworks and hate on this technique, all I have to say is: don’t be a square! Many jewelers WANT to see new kinds of cabs on the market and geek out over seeing something new and exciting that will set their work apart from other makers....

There’s something really fun about making these Cloudy Sky cabs, but don’t feel like you just have to stick with blue! You could easily get really creative with different color and stone combinations to make some fun lapidary art! This is a very well planned masterpiece 👌 ❤
Thank you, I appreciate the kind words!
Mem can epoxy 330 resin use for sapphire hole and crack filling on surface please guide me
Sure! And if you decide you don’t like it, just soak it in acetone to remove the epoxy but it should do the trick.

Congratulations on winning the Halstead Jewelry Supply Grant! That’s a wonderful accomplishment and well deserved.
Thank you so much, Cassandra! It feels awesome to be recognized by them! And the cash award is a nice bonus 😊
excellent work Catlin
Thanks Nancy!
Totally fantastic repair
Thank you Nancy!
Definitely on my wish list
It’s definitely worth it! It helped me stabilize some crumbly amazonite with killer color to make it easier to cut small, precise shapes.
that’s beautiful. keep up the hard work! we need people like you ❤
Thank you so much! 😊
It makes me smile just looking at it!
Me too! It’s great to see it restored to its former glory 🙂
I appreciate you sharing your talent with us. 😊
You’re welcome, Kristi! Thanks for watching!
Highland Park Lapidary got license from Al and makes a new version 2 of his intarsia machine that is absolutely killer. I still have my Al Sesona machine, but if I every update...
Yes! That’s a new piece of equipment since making this video! I think it will be sold out for a very long time, it’s so popular! I can’t remember if the table is adjustable (I have a UK acquaintance that made a grinder like that), but there are a lot of great updates with it for sure.

My favorite candy since I was a wee baby girl... Very cute!!!
Thank you! I also enjoyed candy corns too! 😋
I see the black backing material but what the white “grout” like substance. These are gorgeous! Great idea for all those small but mighty scrap pieces we all have.
The white is either E330 or hxtal with white mica powder mixed in! Just be careful not to add too much lol but you can have fun with colored mica powders too! I like the classy look of the white though. Here’s the link to the one I use: amzn.to/4aGv5A7
Thank you!
You’re welcome!
I'm interested in cobblestone bracelet! Hope you decide to add that class to your repertoire!! The one you showed was absolutely beautiful. Inlay is something I've been yearning for the knowledge to accomplish for many years. You can be sure I'll purchase your class as soon as I can afford it. ❤❤🤍🤍💙💙 PS: I love the way you put your tag on the bracelet! I do the same thing with my creations, and you are the only other artist that I have seen do this!!
Thank you for the kind words, Karie! I can’t wait to see what you make when you decide which class you’re going to take 😊 I know I answered your other questions in your email haha ✨
They look really cute keep up the good work 🤍

Hahaha me too! I’d like to be doing that this weekend lol
Too gorgeous! Love the detail
Thank you! All those details count 😊
I tried making a "paisley" cabochon a couple years ago and did the edge of the wheel technique. It worked ok but I didn't get as much of a concave as I would have liked. I still have the cab so I may try to find a diamond bit closer to the radius of the curve I am looking for as you suggested. I wonder if you could use a set of hole saw bits to get more options for radii. Once you have refined your shape with the technique of choice, how do you proceed with the polishing? You are kind of limited to edge of the wheel technique unless you have diamond tools in all of the different grits.
Yes, it sounds like you’ll need to go to using smaller diamond burs to get that tighter curve you’re looking for! I’m not sure what you mean by “hole saw bits” though? Are you talking about diamond core bits? As far as finishing the inner curve, I’ve been meaning to do another follow-up video but you’d buy some nova points like these from Kingsley North: kingsleynorth.com/diamond-pacific-nova-sanding-polishing-points.html?gad_source=1#895=30296 Then go through the stages of these resin polishing points until you’re all polished! 🙂
Thank you! You had beautiful clear directions. I watched the video just one time and my cabochons look awesome!
I love to hear this!! I’m glad you were able to make some gorgeous intarsias from my video ☺️
Thank You
You’re welcome!
If you use super glue and sprinkle baking soda on it, it's much faster and much harder.
No kidding! Does the super glue still come out clear with the baking soda? Can’t wait to try this out!
It's like a planet! So beautiful. 😊
Exactly!! 😍

Great job!
Thank you! 😊
❤
Hope you enjoyed!
loved that. excellent outcome
Thank you, they’re always fun to make!
What stones are good to use a back plate? Or is it an specific material?
Traditionally people use basenite/basalt sliced thin for backing, but here I used obsidian since that’s what I had on hand at the time. My local lapidary club would often cut “intarsia slabs” that were that 2-3mm and they’d cut a variety of agates, jaspers, etc so you could have a fancier backplate but I’d say just use something that has a good hardness and doesn’t have any visible fractures in it. Good luck and have fun! 😊
This is gorgeous!
Thank you so much! 😊
LOVE! ❤
Thank you! 😊
I tried it out and it was a success. Thanks to Catlin who is the only one I know of on RUclips that actually has a video teaching this technique of inlay. Using her tutorial video I have successfully learned how to do this type of inlay. Thank you so much for taking the time to create this video and to help others like me learn you are an awesome person and artist.
I’m so glad you were able to successfully make your own cobblestone inlay with my tutorial! I always love seeing all of the high-quality materials you use in your jewelry 😍 looking forward to seeing what else you make! ❤️

Do you epoxy the stone into place? Looks like a fun project!
Yes! Any inlay requires the stones to be glued in with a strong epoxy but they should also fit tightly on their own too 😊

Thank you for showing what materials to use and demonstrate how to put it together to make the bracelet bending tool. How do you use it to bend the bracelets?
You’re welcome! I haven’t had the chance to get around to that video on RUclips showing how to bend just a simple copper cuff (but I do show how to use it for my inlay cuff bracelets in my course). I wont be able to do that video for a while as I’m 38wks pregnant. I believe there are some other videos on RUclips that show how to use a bracelet bender-you may check those out in the meantime!
@@calbrittonjewelry Thank you, I'll look into your videos. Congratulations on your pregnancy.
Thank You.
