It may not have been explicit or well known, but I’m sure there were aro/ace people in history. Not to mention how societal expectations and standards are big factors why these people might’ve not known about their identity, or been in romantic/sexual relationships without actually feeling attraction.

Knowing I'm aroace by now too, I actually had the exact same kissing experience. And I just gotta say, if you like someone, regardless of them potentially being aroace now, do not confess with a kiss! You'll put them in a spot where they might not know what's happening until it happened and you just end up overstepping their boundaries and potentially alienating the person you like. Consent is important even for "just" a kiss. And just because they didn't slap you away or some doesn't mean they consented. So in short, surprise kissing someone to confess is not the sweet romantic gesture that movies make it out to be

The thing you don't notice about the whole "let go of a good friend, because they don't want a relationship" is that the longing for more sometimes does not go away. And sometimes the hope for more has a hard time leaving, too.
On a strictly rational level you are absolutely right: A friendship with an awesome person is better than no friendship, if a relationship isn't available.
But you can't just decide to fall out of love. And sometimes fleeing is the only way to escape this feelings.
Looking back... the Aroace announcement should have come as no surprise to anyone. Love you Jaiden

Tip for first dates: NEVER go to see a movie, unless your idea of romance involves sitting in a room where nobody is supposed to talk. Similarly, don't go to places where you have to split your attention, like to a sports game or a show of some kind. Save those for later dates, when you've bonded more and can create meaningful, relevant dialogue based on shared interests or intellectual capacity. But NEVER the first date.
You want the first date to be tentative, but not hesitant. Nothing too intimate, but nothing completely impersonal, either. Something where there's a chance for you to get to know one another and create a bond without too many outside distractions. I'm not an expert on dating, nor am I even in a relationship, but some of the worst first dates I've ever been on have always involved not being able to pay attention to the person I'm with. People focus too much on other people's life. So what if she's aroace? So what if she's asian? So what if she's autistic? So what if she has blue eyes? So what if prefer cats over dogs? So what if she like eggs? So what if she's anything? That doesn't change her or her content, and that's what important, the great, charming stories she talks about and the smooth animation. If you leave her because of that you've never been a true fan of her.

I find that trying to stay friends with an ex or someone that doesn't reciprocate is complicated because one person always feels weirded out. but you're right, logically it makes no sense that you drift a bit apart after a confession. but at least in my experience, someone always needs time to process stuff and recover emotionally from a thing like that.

I find that the best way to break awkward tension between two people that are being socially awkward and don't know what to say, is to comment on the socially awkwardness and make light of it.
