In the future, just tac weld and body fill from there. The tailgate is made out of thin metal and welding it completely all the way around causes a lot of heat and attempting to cool it down rapidly causes it to bend. But for doing it yourself, mad props.
im a licensed bodyman from canada so you can trust this answer. it looks like youre using a flux core welder cuz i dont see a nozzle and it looks like theres dirty brown dust that flux core leaves behind. flux core burns WAY hotter than mig. that might be why it warped. you had a good technique with the sequence and stitch but id weld 6 stitches(tacks the size of a pencil eraser) then blow it cool for 10-15 seconds. wet rags warm up real quick and dont cool down a panel like cold air. ive never warped a panel doing it this way. my sequnce would be 1-------- 6 --------4 | | | | 3---------5---------2 then blow cool for 10-15 seconds. then start the sequnce over.hope this helps

Yea I’m using cheapo welder from Harbor freight, that was always the plan but I’m impatient lol
