  • The Festool Kapex KS120 is the key tool that helps me to deliver square cuts and perfect mitres which are at the heart of my cabinet making. The cutting capacity is generous and the finish produced is outstanding. In these two videos I describe and demonstrate the key features and do my best to convince you that this should be your mitre saw of choice. This machine was my first Festool purchase and I have never had any regrets or reservations about that decision 3 years ago.

    When you work in the trade choking on dust day in day out, Dust collection becomes very important. I would buy this saw for that alone.

    I just purchased a Kapex of my own after doing extensive research as well as agonizing a bit over the price. I must say after owning it for only a few days, that I am spoiled beyond repair. Thank you so much for your very informative videos as well as for taking the time to share your extensive knowledge and tips. Wonderful stuff!

    Thank you Peter, another good video. I do like you handmade left and right hold downs for cutting small pieces. I have cut small pieces on my chop saw using a similar technique but not a safely. The dado cut into the end makes the difference, it also keeps it all square. Thank you.

    • @NewBritWorkshop
      @NewBritWorkshop  10 лет назад

      Hi Harvey, I will show this in a video soon... If the thin strips to be cut are quite high (and hence a risk of the offcut twisting) then I use a spacer under the opposite end of the hold-down piece of wood to keep it close to parallel to the plane of the base. If needed one can use a spacer under both hold-downs. The key thing is to keep the hands away at all times and always wear eye protection. Peter

You now have your first Festool drill, if you want another then your next should be the CXS. I since have purchased 2 MFT Tables, Rotex RO90 AND Rotex RO150, the CT36 ("the unsung hero"), Carvex PS 420, TS 55, and most recently (not yet arrived) the OF1400, I don't know of a cure for this addiction? the worst of it is... Hi Peter, you really have a talent for showing and breaking down the different features and capabilities of various tools. This is the 4th video of yours I watched, and I must say "Brilliant!"..lol
    My question is weather or not you have had the chance to test out the Bosch GCM12GDL Glide Mitre Saw???
    There are a couple of videos on it on RUclips, but I would definitely look forward to your review as I am currently deciding on buying either the Bosch or the Kapex.
    The Bosch has practically all of the features that the Kapex has, and the glide mechanism seems allows you to make perfect "dado" cuts since it does not bounce up and down during the cuts.
    If your not planning on making a video of the Bosch, let me know what you think about it....
    Cheers!

    Hi Peter, I recently treated myself to the Kapex Reb120. I have one gripe with it and wondered if you have had the same problem. When cutting a piece of material and removing approx 10mm or so on the waste side of the blade, that piece of waste gets caught in the blade guard and the spinning blade thus forcing it forward. It’s happened several times and it’s kind of worrying. Maybe you haven’t experienced it because of the fences you have added. Apart from that I love everything about the saw. 👍🏻 One more thing I have to say is, if you really want to know how good the dust extraction is. Use the saw for a few cut without dust extraction. If done that few times by mistake. 😂

    • @NewBritWorkshop
      @NewBritWorkshop  3 года назад +1

      Hi Jason, The solution is easy. You should add a pair of sacrificial pieces on the two halves of the rear fence. When doing any cut the fences should be positioned just wide enough for the saw blade. That way all offcuts, even very small ones, will not be caught and sent flying. Cheers. Peter

    Peter, O have I just finished watching Kapex 120 Part 1. Thank you very clear and concise. Far more concise than 40 minutes of Festool Live!. I noticed that you said at the beginning of your video that you bought the Kapex to replace your old radial arm saw. May I ask why you replaced your radial arm saw? I still use mine daily and I am interested in the Kapex but not as a replacement but as an addition. I often find it very useful to have two saws (currently a Dewalt Radial Arm Saw and a Makita MK100 Mitre Saw) set up differently when making projects and of course the Kapex would be a great improvement on the Makita. It is the Makita I want to replace not the Dewalt RAS). Steve

    • @NewBritWorkshop
      @NewBritWorkshop  2 года назад

      Hi Steve, I had a Dewalt RAS which would go out of true whilst I drank my coffee. I had really looked after it from new and so, in the end, it had to go. I would not buy another as they are not accurate enough (for 90 degree cuts). If any wood is too wide for the Kapex I use my tracksaw cutting station which is even better than the Kapex (0.001 degree accuracy). Peter

    • @NewBritWorkshop

      Hi Steve, A tracksaw cutting station is a slab of MDF or plywood with a pattern of 20 mm holes on it. Just search for "Parf Guide System" or "Tracksaw Cutting Station" in RUclips or on Google. Here is a link to one of my many videos about the subject:

    • @NewBritWorkshop
      @NewBritWorkshop  3 года назад

      Hi Mark, I am not sure how the base could be adjusted and it may be that you have to contact Festool. However, if your Kapex is not brand new then you could put an MDF piece, suitably shimmed, across the base. There are adjustments for squareness of cut - try and get a copy of the Festool Kapex Supplemental Manual. It used to be available from the Festool US web site but has been removed. Peter

    Hi Peter. Great review, many thanks. I have just had a Makita 1060 die on me, after 15 years of use and naturally want to buy a replacement. However, after using the Parf guide system with Festool rails and the brilliant HK85 I am beginning to wonder whether I need a replacement at all. My question is, are there many jobs you find you need to turn to the Kapex for now in preference to the track saw..?

    • @NewBritWorkshop
      @NewBritWorkshop  5 лет назад

      Hi Nigel, You may have seen me making some simple drawers recently... I find the Kapex invaluable for cross cutting within its capacity, particularly when a bevel or angle cut is required. For anything over 300 mm I use my cutting station created with the Parf Guide System (PGS). Peter

  • @roberthead6655

    Hi Peter, Thank you for another great video. I have had my Kapex for almost a year now, lately my dust collection has become really poor. What length of hose are you using? I recently got the 36mm hose from Festool, which is about 4m but the extraction seems to be worse than what is was with the thinner 27mm one? Any other tips you may have to improve the dust collection as your setup seems to be working beautifully.

    • @NewBritWorkshop
      @NewBritWorkshop  9 лет назад +1

      +Robert Head Hi Robert, I use a short length of 36 mm hose from the Kapex to the Dust Hub. If things have changed suddenly then check to see if the bag in the extractor needs changing, check the hose for trapped debris (this can happen quite easily) and also check the Kapex to see if there is a little bit of wood lodged there. If you have been cutting a lot of soft pine it can build up as a sticky lump. Peter

  • @joebloggs7231
    @joebloggs7231 8 лет назад

    Hi Peter, thanks for the video - it's a very tempting saw. I have a 12" mitre saw which is the best I've had so far, very good quality cuts, fairly accurate with some tweaking, a fraction of the price, but the dust collection is appalling! Trenching is something I have never felt was very accurate on any mitre saws. Not only the variable pressure problem you describe but in my experience, none produce a trench that is parallel to the bottom of the stock. Would you say the blade height is constant from the front of the slide to the back? ie Is the top of the base parallel to the slide bars?

    • @NewBritWorkshop
      @NewBritWorkshop  8 лет назад

      +Geoff Sheppard Hi Geoff, Yes trenching does let most mitre saws down. I am reasonably certain that the rails run parallel to the base it is just the pressure that can cause a dip if you are not careful. I am now quite good at Kapex trenching but get the odd mistake but usually the nature of trenching is that it will never show when the work is finished. I would not swap my Kapex for any other saw. Peter

    • @joebloggs7231
      @joebloggs7231 8 лет назад

      +New Brit Workshop (Peter) It's easy to check - adjust the depth so that the blade sits just about on the base, at the forward limit, and run it from front to back and watch the gap. All of the high-end saws I have looked at in showrooms exhibit the same inaccuracy - but I haven't had a play with a Kapex. I realise it isn't the biggest blade but I'm not sure I fully understand some of the comments on the FOG about only managing a 4mm trench though.

    • @NewBritWorkshop
      @NewBritWorkshop  8 лет назад

      +Geoff Sheppard Hi Geoff, There are a lot of people who clearly do not know how the use the Kapex properly. The first indicator is when they say that they get kick-back or pieces of wood fly off at speed after a cut. The maximum depth of a trenching cut will vary according to the thickness of the stock. You also have to have a false rear fence of about 50 mm to bring the work piece forward in order to get the same depth all the way through. Peter

    Hi Peter, Thanks a lot for this great video!! To what percentage are you using your Kapex, track saw and the table saw? I own a Mafell track saw and was thinking of complenting it with the Kapex mitre saw. Does this make sense? Or would you rather sugest to go for a table saw?

    • @NewBritWorkshop
      @NewBritWorkshop  8 лет назад

      +Henning Gohlke Hi Henning, I use each of the Kapex, CMS-TS (table saw) and TS55 (track saw) about the same amount each day. If I had to prioritise between the 3 machines I would find it difficult. The Kapex is absolutely essential (square cuts and perfectly clean). The CMS-TS (track saw) is a dream and has taken over from my big table saw (thanks to the TS 55 track saw for doing the sheet work). I would not go back to the days of having a table saw even if I were given the world's most expensive machine. My woodwork has been transformed by the Kapex, TS55 track saw and the CMS-TS. I also have to add the simply brilliant Domino as well. I will not go back - never - and nobody will ever be able to persuade me to change my mind. Peter

    Peter, I'm a very busy finish carpenter and I currently use a Bosch axial glide it is a great machine but the dust collection leaves a lot to desire. I was hoping to get a unbiased and hounest opinion about the kapex. will it do well in a job site environment where it will be required to make hundreds of cuts in a daily basis? will it stay true while making bevel cuts and miter cuts? will the motor withstand the abuse of hundreds of cuts in a daily basis. is the dust collection as good as everyone says it is? thanks.

    • @NewBritWorkshop
      @NewBritWorkshop  8 лет назад

      +carpenter33 Do you know about the Festool Owners Group (FOG)? If you do you will have seen hundreds of reports from professionals saying that the Kapex is brilliant. There are one or two who have different views which may be based on good experience with another saw and lack of experience of the Kapex. I am delighted with the Kapex dust collection. I really need accurate and repeatable cuts and I get that with the Kapex. I do not take my machine off site but I can vouch for the many FOGgers who claim that it is great when transported. When I did my market research 5 years ago I had two contenders left in the bag - the Bosch Glide and the Kapex. When I heard about the poor dust collection of the Bosch and the advantage of the double lasers on the Kapex I made my decision. I have never regretted going with the Kapex. I paid full price for my Kapex which I bought from Axminster. Peter

    Great video. I would ask you for an advice. My local festool dealer suggests me to buy the Precisio CS 70 instead of the combination of KS120 + TS 55 for ripping and crosscutting. What do you think about it?

    • @NewBritWorkshop
      @NewBritWorkshop  5 лет назад

      Hi Francesco, I would love to have a Precisio but you cannot cut up sheet goods as accurately with it when compared to the TS55 with guide rails (using a top created with the Parf Guide System of course !). Also, The Kapex is a fantastic mitre saw and will cut very accurately at almost any angle you need. So, as much as I would love to have a Precisio for general ripping I would not go for what your dealer recommends. Peter

I will be purchasing my first Kaypex this weekend, and will continue to do the same. As you mentioned, the blade stop’s quickly. I think keeping the blade down prevents double cuts. It took me several weeks to make up my mind to buy the Kapex. I did a huge amount of research and looked for any negative comments (found none). I have just built a pedestal desk to the highest standard that I have ever achieved (thanks to the Kapex and Domino) and if I were to sell it I would make my hourly rate plus enough to buy a new Kapex - to me the decision to buy the Kapex is now a no brainer.
