The pinnacle of auto journalism, Andrew. I bought an LR4 after watching this series 5 years ago. And as you said in your long-term review, it is indeed the best all-around 4x4
Andrew, please make videos like this again. More technical terrains if possible. I understand the builds and that you have to review new products but most of us cannot afford changing our set ups every year.
I really, really enjoyed this video. Please do these edited flashbacks regularly. See you offroad seriously in such a stunning environment was great. Wonderful people in Lesotho. Thanks, Andrew! P.S.: Roland seems to be a great dude. Letting him go tells you everything you need to know about Land Rover as a company.
I just love my Land Rover Discovery 3 TDV6, 2005 model. I still off-road on very challenging trails here in South Africa and even with 360,000 km on the clock, it still can go anywhere relatively easily. I am only now needing to change the injectors for the first time. It is expensive, but this vehicle is like a family member, so we'll worth it. I know when I drive this vehicle, my family is safe and secure. When I show clients farms that I sell, they cannot believe how capable it is and how comfortable it is over rough terrain. It also simply looks good. My 24 year old landy is still my daily runner. If you look after this vehicle, you will enjoy hundreds of hours of total bliss.
This is my favourite Drivers review of the Discovery 4 by far, it is also quite possibly the best Sales Video ever produced as well. Everything put together however is absolutely stunning and if you're wanting an off road vehicle I think the Discovery 4 is ideal.
Disco 4 still one of the best cars I have ever owned for overlanding and the occasional 4x4 route, but in game parks for me it was just the bees knees, great on sand roads, great to look out the windows and so comfy.
Well done, Sir! You have certainly opened up the neural pathways again! As a huge Landcruiser, Landrover Series and Defender, Discovery 1 and Jeep TJ and CJ fan you've taught me something here. I believe all my series and 110 Defender Landies would have done this as well as my diminutive Jimny. I am seriously impressed with the underlying capabilities of the LR4. It just goes to show how preconception can be so wrong. Oh, and, the amazing Mercedes Geländewagen, now we're talking! Thank you for your e excellent cinematography and content that touches the heart of someone who grew up in a Natal Parks Board family in the Bush driving Jeep CJ 2a's, landies and Landcruiser FJ45's offroad from a young age. I love your work and your authenticity. Bayete!
I have an lr3 and I love it. I’ve watched the original versions of this about 10 times and was more than happy to watch it again. I might switch to an lr4 eventually.
Please that you posted this. Of all your videos over the years, the LR4 Baboons series are the ones I have revisited the most times. Your tent packing away didn’t seem as much a challenge in this version 😉 congratulations on your career. WA6028
LR4 Best Car by far, In the process of purchasing a 2013 V8. Sold by SDV6 for a Ranger Rover Sport 2017. Sold it after a year lots of Luxury but a LR4 for the Money, Power, Comfort and Space compared to others of the same year and newer its just awesome. I might be bias here because they say if you drove a LR its hard to but ass in any other car
Had an LR4 that I modded with 18s, larger hybrid AT/mudder tires, ARB bumper and a winch. Wheeled it everywhere. Did the same trails my buddies in Jeeps did, just sometimes couldn’t take the same line. For traction, it was better than Jeeps without lockers. And it never lacked for traction, you just needed to know how to drive it. Didn’t have nearly the articulation, and that wasn’t a traction problem, but a safety problem sometimes. There is not much scarier than having your front wheel 3 feet in the air on the downslope on a mountainside. And the air suspension was one of those subconscious anxieties- I didn’t regularly think about it failing and leaving me stranded, but it was always in the back of my mind. Eventually it had engine problems after an accident, and I needed more room anyway to carry my mountain bike. So now I’m in a Jeep Gladiator. Fits my wheeling and carrying needs better and I love it. But still a fondness in my heart for Roger, my LR4. We had a lot of great adventures together.
The baboons pass series was the reason I subbed to this channel many years ago. At the time I had only just purchased a Disco 3 so it was cool to see how capable they where at the time.
If you maintain a Disco properly, including the electronics, they are the best car for anybody with a big family who wants to go anywhere, wants to tow anything, etc.I love my Disco 4 2015, and I invested in TuffAnts 18" wheels. I always counter Andrew's comment on the big 20" wheels as standard. He always puts new wheels and tyres on his Troopie ;-)
@realtoverland My 290GD owned for ten years was disastrously unreliable, experiencing a wheel bearing failure shortly after a front tyre ripped a wing off a Volvo in a roundabout lane clash, with no body damage whatsoever. Stronger than Time and G Wagens can cost you less than nothing in long-term depreciation. I'm still getting tempted to try an elderly Land Cruiser though, if I can find one not looking like a bar of soap or a Tonka toy and it would need to be propelled by 4.2 litres of non turbo perpetual rotation. And I've had a 1978 Range Rover since 2002; that is a completely different breed to later Land Rover products being reasonably reliable and devoid of electronics bar the alternator diodes and electronic ignition.
I personally think that Discovery was at prime with first version, 89-98, very good and reliable engines 200tdi or 300tdi, easy to fix. Next disco generations spends unfortunately more time at mechanix due to advanced electronics and romances with different companies that were delivering engines bmw/ford. No offense to anyone, if they are well maintained they could be reliable but you can’t go wrong with D1. Thank you for uploading videos, cheers 🍻!
Andrew, - love your videos and your honesty. I bought my 2016 D4 Landmark a year ago - yes, 20" wheels.... My biggest problem is tyres - being in Europe I need all season, all terrain tyres with the snowflake symbol to make them legal in winter in places like Germany and Austria. I have only found a single tyre on the market that fulfils this at the standard 255/50/R20 size and that's the Yokohama Geolander. There is the Falken, Wildpeak which is an excellent tyre, but that is 255/55/R20 which is slightly larger - hopefully it will fit as I rather like these. But the D4 really IS the perfect vehicle - great for the 1,000 mile cross Europe drive I will do in a few days time, mostly on the Autobahns - but then, as you say, it's also perfect for driving the mountain trails in the Alps and the mountains of Central Europe. Much better than the D5 which replaced it - which is why I bought one of the very last D4s.

Unfortunately, here in Japan, there aren't any trails as difficult as Baboon Pass to take it on, but I had to drive across an extremely muddy rough solar panel construction site in the mountains of Fukushima. I had normal stock tyres and I didn't even have to take it out of high gear. Far better than my 3 litre petrol engines manual Pajero which I owned before it. Other cars (SUVs) struggled even on the flat parts of that construction site, but my D5 didn't even spin or slide on the steep hills. I only wish it didn't come with (stupid) 20" rims!! Yes, I do it old school by turning my head to look down the middle of the car and out of the back window. That allows me to check for obstacles on both sides as well as the road behind me. Now, .....the only question that remains from this fantastic video is whether Andrew bought a pair of frilly underwear for himself or not! :-) Well, that is for Andrew to know and we to wonder about.

Ive always liked the LC100 petrol but with the starter under the intake I just had to pass. Not serviceable in the field so Id never take it on long trips.
The moral of the story is,if you want to buy a land rover Discovery to cross Baboon road, you must also hire a team of experts with Landrover Defenders.
The moral of the story is this: Land Rover's claims about the LR4 are well justified. And it completed this pass with expertise and assistance because its just not made for this kind of trip. And it needed quite a bit of repair work after it. The Defenders didn't.

I will not. LR still hate me and for good reason. Its awful in every way. Except the seats. I like the seats.
Dear Andrew, Can you share stories with MB G-class? Which Episodes are they?
I am sure the new Defender will make it up Baboons Pass also.
But I would REALLY like to see someone take a stock Toyota LC300 up there!
Disco4 wasn't meant for offroading but is still useable for offroading
Ive always liked the LC100 petrol but with the starter under the intake I just had to pass. Not serviceable in the field so Id never take it on long trips.
How did you trick it to go super extended? Thx
watch the video.
@@overland-workshop Hello from Germany. i did a couple of times. I hoped there was an Option befrore you bottomed out. I habe da Disco 3 myself...
Well, so I now know what my LR4 is capable of 😊 but I do not trink that I ever will touch ist Limits on my offroad trips
38:50
😂❤️
My LR3 is also very good ...
I love how all the LR4 owners here say it‘s the best car or offroader out there when cars like a Land Cruiser or G wagon W461 exist 😂
Could you share some stories of a stock Land Cruiser or a G-wagon doing the Baboon's Path?
Land Rover 88 pre 68 then 109 🙂
I realy love your channel but these 1 minute add breaks are to much
I remove them! But RUclips won't listen when I do. Out of my control. Sorry.
@@overland-workshop I know what you are saying, but would it have made the journey with no support..is it capable of a solo journey in these conditions..I thought that was the point.
@@Yaketyyak21 challenging expeditions should never be done solo on any vehicle.
Why did I think "Baboons Pass" sounded like "Baboons Arse?"
👌👌👍👍
overegsaturanting all mate
oh, the horror.
So what you needed was 5+men to move the rocks for the LR4...
Had it been even bigger, 10 men, a crane. Where does this end? The LR4 wasn't the problem here.
I'd rather have the LR3 over the LR4. The 3 has a more dependable powertrain. (V8)
On IGNITION TV
Many, many years ago. I stopped working with them because not only did I have to produce the video for them and give it to them for broadcast, they would not even cover the music license fees. It was around that time I gave up on broadcast TV and turned to RUclips.
@4xoverland I honestly always wondered why you stopped broadcast TV, I followed you as a young man never missed an episode I even show my son's the general area where you camped with your daughter in the D-Teq which is in the same area as our farm, but l am not complaining, I never miss an upload!!
You could have done without that rain .
Crap unreliable 4x4s tow trucks love them in Australia
Didn’t watch the video did you?
Hardly crap. Hardly unreliable. Name any other vehicle that is as capable off-road, and as luxurious on road…
My heart says buy one,
My brain- Left the chat.
🤣🤣. Ditto! My ex has one with aftermarket 18" tyres and have done many trips in it. Cost a lot to repair the twin turbos but, man, what a vehicle for long trips, with some bush. I had just convinced myself NOT to consider one, but...
