I wrote a paper in college about Siouxsie and the Banshees. The hypothesis is that she's a mystical being from another planet, and their music makes you transcend space and time because of this. I got an A.
Still listening and watching again and again also in October 2023 ! What a great masterpiece. 💖 What a great present this great video exists in such good quality, thank you for this! 💞🎶🙏
Wow they were tight!! Siouxsie looks and sounds great, Steve is killing it on bass and Budgie on drums and of course Robert Smith on guitar = Thanks for posting now I have goosebumps
The middle of the song where shes sings the part in the sky the demon backgrounds vocals sounded so cool. Wish it was recorded that way but its still my favorite out her excellent collection.
We were the only 2 punks in st johns wood, I was called posh punks mate..ha ha .Saw the banshees 10 times this vid just so cool. She'll Allways be the queen of punk.so cool!
Some of her best singing, and some of the best band synergy right here. Royal Albert Hall must have been one of the best shows they ever played, every track I find from that performance is amazing, and rivals it's studio version. I am a huge fan of Siouxsie and the Banshees, one of the most unique acts of all time, but there are some live performances on YT where you can tell the band cohesion is just not there, of course that makes sense cause they never kept one line up for too long. I'm not a big fan of the cure, but Robert Smith was always great in the Banshees, and you could tell this line up really all got along the way a band should. Respect to great artists.
What I remember is that Channel 4 asked bands (e.g. New Order) to make their own films. The Banshees did have stuff from concerts in it (probably Nocturne), but I remember them all sat round a table as Alice in Wonderland characters. Budgie wore a dress! Actually, I'm totally lazy as it tells me in a book by Mark Paytress I have on the Banshees! I was still at school when I saw it! Paytress says they were drinking mushy brew out of the tea-pot!
It was called 'Play at Home'. Channel 4 gave a band an hour, half an hour of live music (it WAS Nocturne) then half an hour of whatever the band wanted. Sioux says Big Country included footage of them loading their van (big imagination, not!).Oh, and it was wine, not mushy brew in the tea-pot! Robert Smith and Severin also wore dresses. A fan played Tweedledum!
I couldn't agree more. Anyone who knows me, knows Robert Smith was my favorite guitarist of the Banshees, followed by McGeoch. Hyaena is my favorite album, it has a sound that's completely different from the others. Robert Smith is to be credited for that, sorry to say "The Cure" is good but not as good, I dunno what was with Smith and the Banshees that made it sound so amazing. I still don't understand the magic behind it, and Hyaena.
McKay's the worst... After all he inspired song Drop Dead when he adandoned the band with Kenny Morris.. McGeoch is obviously the best... he's so creative and exciting and awesome sounding... But he's also kind of a fuck up... After all he was pretty much fired by Siouxsie when he dropped a gig hard.. Robert Smith is a badass.. he can't sing like Siouxsie.. nor play like McGeoch.. but he's a total badass. JVC is next.. then Jon Klein for me
Interesting as I’m a crazy cure fan but Robert was not the banshees best guitarist... I do love Hyena though due to Roberts influences on the entirety of the album
Theres a guy on You Tube whos posted a vid of himself playing 'Spellbound' with Jon Mc Geochs actual SG.Apparantly purchased from Mc Geochs daughter.Hes pretty good!
Siouxsie seems a lot more tired and worn than I would have expected...and then I realised that even in 1983 she's been doing this hard-out for seven years now and also that this is right after half her band went out for a newspaper and never returned, which is why Cure members are filling in. She's probably feeling quite stressed and hurt.
Well…the half the band splitting thing happened in 1978. This was just after the band fired John McGeoch because his drinking was affecting their performances. Bob filled in admirably here though and it is easily one of the best middle period Banshees recordings.
But you’re right it was a high stress time for the band regardless of personnel. They’re still killing it because they were hardened professionals by this time
Her voice was at its best here. It started losing its power just after "Peepshow". By Tinderbox though, her voice is the best instrument on the album - she'd really learnt to use it to stunning effect.
@ILikeCalliopes This really made me laugh, because I heard the vocal you were talking about, and imagined a bunch of people staring, completely vexed out of their minds wondering why someone would sing the album version like this. Totally hilarious!
I like Robert Smith but he wasn't a good fit for siouxie. The two " macs" before him did a much better job on the guitar.Check out the live in koln version of "switch"
@@dominica4799 Having power and range has nothing to do with the music being good. Take axle rose of Guns and Roses for example. He has a huge range, but I don't like their music. Same with Adele. She can sing, but the music is very boring.

Possibly the most original British female artist ever.... along with Kate Bush..... amazing live band!
You are right

Budgie. what a great drummer. original. one of he's own kind. class act.
Saw them in 78 when they played this but can't remember the drummers name....

Perfect rendition of a perfect song. This album got me through some shitty years.
I listen to this song every.single.day.
i love you

Cool.apparently it's about science and religion
one of the best live performances, ever.
🖤
I saw them live that very year. With Robert Smith on guitar. 2 good things in one as Siouxsie and The Cure were my favourite bands then.
My favourite version of this track....
Siouxsie, Robert, Steve et BUDGIE, le meilleur batteur new wave qui ait jamais existé!
tout à fait d'accord ! Je note l'utilisation du tom basse à la façon des ramones (notamment) qui donne une puissance d'enfer.
Of course!
Wow they were tight!! Siouxsie looks and sounds great, Steve is killing it on bass and Budgie on drums and of course Robert Smith on guitar = Thanks for posting now I have goosebumps

Timeless! You can listen to her music over and over but never grow tired of it??? I am simply in awe!
one of the best songs ever!
The best, a pure diamond
The best Banshee song for sure.
Their sound was so unique it cannot be duplicated she one of a kind with another genius on guitar lead vocalist Robert Smith of the cure
Severin's bass lines are so cool and ominous! Very underrated bassist.
In the year of 2024 ... Man are still Alive lol but this is timeless Im 51 now
I love that haunting voice you can hear in the background during the breakdown really edges things makes it spooky yet intriguing
I agree I wouldn't even call this rock music, it's epic sounds from another time and dimension, it's almost indescribable
4:00 that's got to be the most powerful bass drop in I've ever heard..

Robert Smith was a worthy, albeit short lived, successor to John McGeoch on guitar duties. he sounds amazing on this live set.
Amazing

Fat Bobby Smith is a copycat. He took on the makeup, the hair, the flanger, everything from the Banshees. No way he could reach McGeoch to the ankles.

What was that weird film the Banshees made for channel 4 in the 80s, that featured them doing the Mad Hatter's tea party? Is it on RUclips?

@ILikeCalliopes I know exactly what you're talking about! I thought I was the only one who did that! It does sound like a demon-voice.
Great performance, but damn they should've had someone play the brass part live, too. It really punctuates that section.
this is great, or as they say in Portuguese, é fraquinho
Isso não faz sentido algum!
Fraquinho is you!! Weak of mind!
is robert smith ?
@xuao24
fraquinho in portuguese means something like awful, bad, weak
fraco = weak
better yet, buy any album at your local independant record store.
Don’t understand how ppl slag the banshees. “Take Me Back” to 1983!!!!!!
Which band ripped off this song because I've heard a song that sounds like this
Nocturn
I wonder how successful a career the two nobs who left the band have had in comparison?

Every few years I try understanding why people like Souxsie. I just can't get into her vocals. Like a bad night at karoeke.
What on earth? She has amazing vocal range and great control over her unique voice.
That's your opinion but I disagree. She has imo an unique voice and great vocals
