Malaysia Airlines To Retire Airbus A380 Fleet By End 2022, So Why Are They All Still Flying?
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 19 авг 2022
- Malaysia Airlines has made no secret of its desire to be rid of the Airbus A380. But many airlines have reneged on their initial instincts to remove the type from service as travel demand comes surging back. Perhaps there is still hope?
Well, speaking to Simple Flying, Capt. Izham Ismail, Group Chief Executive Officer of Malaysia Aviation Group, reiterated that there is no plan to bring back the A380. Indeed, by the end of this year, it is hoped all six will leave the fleet.
So, it seems that Malaysia Airlines will not be joining the likes of Lufthansa and Qatar Airways in undoing its decision to remove the A380 from its fleet. So why can we still see all six somewhat regularly in the sky?

I still think Emirates should be buying them, they are already realising there will never be a true replacement for the A380 and so are trying to extend the lifespan of their current jets.
Emirates is operating the A380 because that's half of their entire fleet. If they had a choice they won't be operating so many of them
good take though
Emirates would operate the 380 if they had the choice. It works with their business model and passengers love it. The 380 will never find a true replacement for its spaciousness and the sheer beauty of the giant.
RIP A380
@@sainnt Emirates had and continue to have faith in the A380. Airlines like Qatar and Lufthansa took different views and still came to operate the A380. The A380 has proven it will take more than covid to wipe it out
Buy all the a380s
Hi i work in aircraft maintenance as a planning engineer... there are multiple types of aircraft preservation programs (these are just from the AMM and separate from the AMP) that are performed depending on how long it takes from last flight to next flight. These programs have 3 phases, the initial preservation, the continuous periodic ground checks and the de-preservation prior rts. All of which become more complex and costly the longer they intend to keep the aircraft preserved. Airlines can keep using the lightest short term preservation option (or in some cases, just immobilization) by flying the aircrafts just before the validity of the preservation option expire, then just re-apply them and repeat. Aside from preservation cost savings they can keep the aircrafts somewhat ready for operations cause they will only be needing minimal de-preservation tasks which are usually just removal of covers and some general visual inspections (ofc all mandatory expired calendar driven tasks aside from de-preservation should have been performed prior rts)
Sure you are buddy
When flying to SEA I often book MH because youre almost guaranteed an A330. You really cant beat the A330 for passenger comfort in economy. 2 across is just the best.
True I rode on a350 and it was great
Oh my god thank goodness, I've never flown in an A330 and i have to take a long haul flight of 13-14 hs flight to Rome and back in one and I was hoping that it was at least as comfortable as a 777, would you compare it to one of those or to a 787?
Extra legroom economy on the A330 is pretty damn sweet, though on the A350 it's still a damn fine product. You can't go wrong with Malaysia AIrlines, to be honest. The fact you can earn and spend QFF points with them is just the icing on the cake.
@@lmlmd2714 That’s actually nice fr
The few airlines that intend to keep the A380 in their fleets will probably take Malaysian's planes but they'll wait until Malaysian is desperate to get rid of them and willing to take almost any price. It's a buyer's market. And no, Malaysian shouldn't try to bring them back into service. It's a recovering airline that nearly went under, it needs to minimise operating costs.
I understand the enthusiasm surrounding the A380. It is good to see more of them flying for various reasons. But ultimately other planes are better suited to most routes.
I love the A380. One of the very few airliners I can sleep on. Far better than over illuminated A350s.
It's the best, and smoothest plane I ever flew. I love the A380
Best airliner that i can sleep on apart from A380 would be B787..that aircraft is more silent & comfortable compared to overhyped A350
I flew a few times on Malaysian Airways A380s, the service was brilliant, the planes fantastic. They were unfortunate in loosing two aircraft and the public perception of the airline was not good, which was sad as they are a very professional airline offering value for money flights. The A380 could make a come back as airports want airlines to reduce there landing slots and Asia is becoming more and more the power house for industry and commerce. Every time I go to Kuala Lumpur the skyline has changed, the place is buzzing and the A380 should be part of the sign that says were moving forward and showing the world that they have the best.
I totally agree with You Sir!!
Agree with you
Totally agree. I've flown regularly on Malaysia Airlines since I was a teenager. They're still my go-to choice for the kangaroo route. The judgement of the public after the two accidents was so sad, as neither were due to a failure on the airlines part - both were freak events. I'd be 100% happy to get on a MH flight tomorrow, and indeed I'd pick them over the competition, even over Qantas, given the choice. The extra-legroom economy product is fantastic value, and even in Y the catering is excellent. I didn't know just how good MH were until I had the "pleasure" of flying with Turkish airlines (MNL-IST-LHR, after a perfectly decent PAL flight from SYD).
No. They never needed the plane. Too much for their network
With 28 A380s are already retired as of now, I started to kind of agree that it was the biggest mistake for Malaysia Airlines to buy 6 A380s. But for now, those A380s are not going anywhere until further notice.
Really wish they bring it back and start operating to LHR, NRT, SYD!
A380 of malaysia Airlines are mainly used for pilgrimages to Mecca, but also for long-haul flights, especially the last recipient to Europe: London, after the withdrawal of the Boeing 777 from its fleet following the deletions of the two other main destinations for Europe: Paris and Amsterdam
The London route is sadly replaced by the A350 :(
So are the Emirates A380s over here in Toronto Pearson (YYZ) 🙃
I flew the Malaysian Airline once from jeddah to kuala lumpur in january 2020. So lucky to onboard on this superjumbo flight. Maybe once in a lifetime experience for me to onboard a380. Miss to going back visit medina and mecca.
I would think that they would be better off using them for shuttle flights between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, which is a very busy corridor, but those may be costlier to operate than a flight to nowhere which would not require any cabin crew.
It's not a bad idea to keep the planes active, especially for some sort of short term wet lease or something.
The A380 is mainly used by MAS to carry pilgrims to Mecca
Not really. It would make the ticket too expensive for a short distance route like KL to Singapore to have the A380s, which is the world's busiest route with a very high frequency of lower cost flights. The current use of the A380s for the Haj route to Saudi Arabia is highly profitable for Malaysia Airlines. So it makes sense for the airline to fly there. Therefore the airline is currently making profits once again.
Frequency over quantity. Period
@@superlogistics1 Frequency at low cost is not efficient for a 4 engine large jet like this one. It needs full load long haul routes to make it profitable.
@@cleanenergyinside1921 The Hajj flights are definitely a great idea for the A380. The KL to Singapore is one of the busiest routes in the world, but I think the busiest is the Seoul to Jeju route.
I would like the think that Malaysia Airlines is fully retiring their A380 fleet because they can’t catch up with costs and maybe that’s why the airline is looking to sell their A380s.
The plane is too hard to fill and usually only flies at about 80%. Same problem other airlines have with the A380.
Just spotted two of these at KUL a day before this video released. Was ecstatic seeing A380s post-pandemic !!
i have been riding that a380 to paris when i was 2 years old I think, i didn't remember anything I did on that plane but i have remembered the IFE Screen it was magnificent! i miss those days
They should reinstate them atleast 2 models for Umrah demands
Biggest mistake .. ordering that leviathan...
At the time.. probably seemed very enticing to keep up with larger airlines as a.." must have" aircraft.... I'm
sure Thai and many others felt the same way..
There are claims that Airbus used strong arm tactics on a few airlines to get them sold. Hopefully Mitsubishi enter the marke8t and end the current duopoly.
With their safety record will be sad to see them go.
Also such a shame they can't be used as freighters.
My favorite plane...given a choice I would always choose to fly on the A380 long haul...
I'd think, with a pilot shortage, that flying more souls in each trip - regardless of the added expense - would still work well for another 10 years.
Airbus messed up by not building them from the ground up to be cargo carriers. The Developing world will continue to see their standards of living increase which will drive up the demand for air freight.
Fedex and UPS showed interest but they didn't want the aircraft because of their cost, training, and weight, it was for the best, Airbus does have other options that are coming to market such as the A330 and A350
They need to leave it in storage
MH A380 Have different engines and different interiors and different specifications from Emirates A380, its a logigistical headache to dovetail into the fleet
Emirates have multiple engine options for their A380
For now, Malaysia Airlines must convert A380 to COMBI like B747COMBI. My suggestion is, Upper Deck change layout to like in A350 or A330Neo. Main Deck convert to fully cargo compartment using ULD PMC, PAG and ect. 🇲🇾 It good for feature of A380 with a lot of investment from MAG.
Oh man… I love flying to London with MAS A380 ..
There is plan for MAS A380. Stay tuned in October.
I landed an Kuala Lumpur a month ago and saw from the window 2 a380s outside a hanger with the logo and Malaysia airlines stripped of
If ordering other airbus aircraft why not part exchange them?
Given the Malaysian A380s have the RR engines equipped, British Airways might take them over alltogether. We´ll see. But they seem to be in a good state.
They are. Seldom used
The issue with the aircraft is that it doesn’t have a secondhand market… I think HiFly’s failure after just 1 year put the nail in the coffin
they should use it in the chennai or bangalore route and reduce the economy class prices. it will be full. unfortunately chennai airport infrastructure cannot accomodate a380 i think
I’ll buy one. $100 is my final offer, take it or leave it.
Looking to Emirates fleet , all are A380 and B777 aircraft. Due to high demand in passenger and they prefer the A380 . It's will be good MAS sell all the 6 to Emirates . Because most of the Emirates fly non-stop stop route.
I just want to comment on the livery of Malaysian Airline's jets. I much prefer their old red, white, and blue scheme to this newer, more boring, simple blue and white. Same with United, who years ago went away from their orange, red, and blue and white color scheme to a similar boring, minimalistic blue and white.
*To the Chinese, the Blue color scheme on MH's A380s is known as Mourning Blue. The Blue color used mainly during Farewells or Obituary events to send off the dead*
@@redmi9t444 Interesting. Although I highly doubt that that is the reason that Malaysian Airlines chose to go with that color scheme. Think it would be quite negative for the public and passengers to make that association every time they flew on MA, especially given the disasters the airline suffered just a few years ago.
I am so sad that MH retired this fleet of a380
Would it be worth for Turkish airlines to purchase them so to finally start the kangaroo routes that they have been promising to do ??
I don't see why there can't be a cargo modification for the A380.
meanwhile, its the only airline that still cant find a missing jumbo mh370.
...because it's not the end of 2022 yet? Sometimes I don't understand RUclips headlines.
They should replace the A380 by the Queen of Skies B747
Wel the reason the a380s are still flying is that they have to make sure that they still work my uncle told me that cuz he actually flys them
KLIA just doesn’t have the international passenger volume like Changi /Dubai .
And few business people who pay a lot more .
Surprised anyone would travel with that airline.
It still offers good services and pleasant flights though
🙄🙄🙄🙄
Could they consider leasing them? At least that way they'd be making some money from them if they can't get a commitment to buy.
If no body interested in buying, do you think there will be much from the leasing. Remember the maintenance and the insurance cost etc, selling is the best idea.
Heck with the new trend and people buying retired/junked airframes to convert them into a house or some kind of thing, these 380’s would seem like a two story condominium or something like that. Hmmmm
At 1:03, was this some type of unintentional joke? 😯
imagine finding an a380 on the beach lol
Seeing Airbus currently say the A380 is over and won't return to production, I think that any airline who owns them should park them up if the haven't got a use for them and keep hold of them long-term for when the marker changes upwards again. You're not going to be able to but new ones.
parking aircrafts is costly, indefinite aircraft preservation programs means airlines will bleed cash in order to keep them in good shape... and they will need to be parked in a heavy maintenanance capable MRO station cause their HMV or C-checks would need to have been performed by the time they need them out of preservation.
they would be corroding away somewhere and continue losing value.... the design service goals of these things are usually 25 years, once they exceed that age the maintenance costs would spike. thats why the best option would be to sell them ASAP
No one has wanted them for years and thatz not going to change anytime soon.
They’ll bring them back … you’ll see
Yes it should fly the a380 again theyre almost five stars 😢
They should carry on flying the A380.
Qatar Airways should buy them to cover the A350s grounding and order cancelation.
Them buying an Airbus would create another controversy
Yo dude
Kenapa dia dah tak terbang lagi
2020 🙋♂️
Yes they still fly their 380 aircrafts
What is the price?
Airbus A380 price is about $450 million.
These planes are so expensive to operate they need to be almost full every flight to turn a profit. It’s too bad they brought the super jumbo into the market when they did, these big birds just use too much fuel.
instead of flying to nowhere why not convert the A380 into a airborne restaurant or a banquet hall? the plane could take off from KLIA and land in Kota Kinabalu with loads of people doing function. Perhaps if it is not possible then convert the airplane into carry freight instead.
I think Singapore Airlines, Qantas Airlines, Qatar Airways and Emirates Airlines want to leased Malaysia Airlines A380.
Malaysia Airlines are last Airbus A380 user.
Purely a in-the-moment thought:
I wonder if MAS A380’s fate woudve faired better if it was an all-economy class like Japan used to do for a few of their 747s. 500++ people in a single domestic flight.
The A380 can fit 800++ people in all-economy layout on a single flight, right? Just saying.. the flights between KLIA and Sabah/Sarawak are always busy. And the flight time of 2 hours ++ (btween KL and kota kinabalu) is atleast “long enough”.
Of course.. the sudden influx of 800 people at the airport is going to be one massive nightmare for the people on the ground probably😅😅😅
No issue with that, but the air port in both of this state perhaps are not suit with A380’s.
An bear in mind the cost of running this plane, even if its busy you are talking about 800 in one go. While the demand is actually spread throughout the day. Even with this busy schedule, i believe the plane will be still flying half empty. Which in turns not economic to the airliner.
emirate could buy both qatar mas a380
Malaysia Airlines should keep it if not sell it to Emirates
Maybe malaysia airlines should keep it or sell it
@@bintangMuhammadRadjaNugroho absolutely maybe just keep the a380 or even one on their kl to London Heathrow route as 13hr flight on a a350 looks uncomfortable
Plus need a380 on long haul routes a350 looks too uncomfortable for long hdul
@@jamiesworld1690 I don’t think the a350 is so uncomfortable…

The world isn't big enough for more bigger planes than a380.
Middle Eastern airlines should buy them.
Collect dust? Make them into restaurants
can you please tell me why i get " ERR_HTTP2_PROTOCOL_ERROR " everytime I want to access your page?
Before they can retire an A380 they have to find someone who wants to buy it.
then why did MAS bought it in the first place???.....
2020
BA should buy them cheaply as they need more A380s
I thinking why not Malaysia Airlines reserve this for Hajj period and also London route..
The London route is lucrative but it's just difficult to fill up the A380. That makes is a whole lot more expensive to operate than the A350 (of which they're using now).
And hajj period is seasonal. U kept the plane grounded for most of the year.
Oi 🙏🙏💕
That is weird
Was on one of these back in 2014 when ukraine/Russia shot down one and the other went awol.
They were talking back then of getting rid of them because they were too expensive
Heavens knows why they still have them
Those were Boeing 777's that went missing or were shot down, not A380's.
@@01thomasss ... I know?
@@Drakesy Didn't sound like you knew in your first post.
@@rayh493 sorry was indicating they shot down a Malaysian Airlines plane
Remove the engines and wings and convert them into condominiums.
I think the reason many operators choose to remove the A380 from its fleet is financial issues due to mismanagement of the company. We all saw many companies go under because of the global pandemic while others remained afloat. This is largely due to a healthy financial situation. The CEO of Malaysia airlines was probably not cutting back on his paycheck/lifestyle during the global crisis.
Removing the A380, which by basic math is approximately as fuel efficient per passenger as the A320, is a decision which these operators are going to regret. Luckily, some of them still have common sense by keeping this beautiful airplane flying.
Well, if you know Malaysia GLCs operate you will know why most of them are struggling...
Fuel efficient per passenger if its full, if its less than A320 is mostly efficient.
Remember those ratio were booked seat, not just the seats. If its empty the cost goes to the other passengers.
Perhaps with cabin refurbishment and offering seasonal routes using A380 might yield more revenue. Of course not all airport can accomodate this gigantic whale. I could see using A380 as a transit plane from Middle East to Australiasia routes via KUL. That is just me.
maG 👍
Air Canada should buy them
4.0
A330 is best
Where is the plan to turn these airplanes into cargo config?
Thanks, Malaysia it's too optimistic, they cost too much money to operate, maybe storage, sell, traffic down, sell, the best they do.
Emirates will biy or ba or si gaphore do I surely they willmfly
Fly A380 to KK n Kuching once before being totally sell off as this mega jet never touch down either in Sabah or Kuching as we r part of Malaysia too!
Why scrap an aircraft, that the general flying public love to fly. Has Malaysia airlines and others still flying the A380, not heard of fractional ownership of aircrafts? If your airline is part of an alliance, why not share its use among your member partners? That should spread the cost, of its maintanance and allow the flying public of other airlines in the alliance to enjoy the A380.
Why fly them empty when you can make money off of them full?

Wait. Why aren’t Emirates buying them?
Maybe Emirates already knows tht A380 is not biggest profit generator but just didn't admit it. that's why they didn't buy these frm MAS.
Convert A380 into cargo flight
I found a invoice after my husband passsed away in 2016 something to do with Malaysia but could never make sense if it. I had i believe a Corrupt Attourney.
I don't personally know anything about aircrafts, my husband whom passed in 2016 had a friend Bill William Miller whom flew a private plane. Nothing should stay in storage, i feel bad for massive products that were made for a purpose than have to be put away because of Greed or Fraud.
