Transiberian isn't really a metal band because it has elements of a functioning orchestra. It has sections such as string, brass and percussion with the occasional opera soloist. It also has classical music elements. There's a lot of soloist but there not all metal musicians.

How come I don't see Tristania in the comments (unless they're classified as gothic metal), albums such as Widow's Weeds, Beyond the Veil, World of Glass are phenomenal. Tiamat's Wildhoney is superb as well 🖤
Therion started it, Nightwish brought us Tarja, Epica and Floor's bands, Sirenia, Xandria, Dark Sarah and now we have also Ad Infinitum, with the marvelous singer Melissa Bonny. Death- Gothic and Powermetal can also have symphonic influences but would not call it Symphonic Metal.
You know it's nice to know that current music outside of the USA is still good lol. At least one American band is still decent. Most of my fav current artists are not from the USA and a few of them are on this list. I LOVE Symphonic metal. My fav song of all time is still Escapist by Nightwish and I also love Within Temptation and Epica. Bought some of their songs on iTunes.
Ok..i would never imagine Therion as a 1st place in a symphonic metal tier list.. But i agree!! Even among Titans like Nightwish, Epica, Dimmu (c'mon.. the entire list is fantastic), Therion has something different.. Their magic is beyond measure. (And, when i said "magic", that's for real! Amazing tier list!
I really love the bands from the Netherlands; Epica and WT, but the purest of what I would call symphonic metal progressive is Nightwish. The Melodie’s are classically pure, especially the latest album. Some of you power metal fans may not like it but it is wonderfully nature oriented. Floor is incredible, her range is broad, and she can sing anything and fits the band well. Floor is one of the best singers of any genre that I have heard. She loves the music, acts it well as any classically trained singer and loves the audience and inspires the band as well. Reminds me a lot of Annie Haslam who was the vocalist with the English band Renaissance back in the 70’s, who had a five octave range and was severely hearing impaired as well and were very classically oriented. While not metal in any respect, they are worth listening to as they represent the beginnings of symphonic rock. As a hearing impaired singer myself, Annie imspired me to go for it and I did.

Whithin Temptation is an admirable pick, but Nightwish is definitely #1. Sorry. That’s truth. I know this was years ago, but, we’ve seen what’s going on. I know my comment is way late. Just saying.
I love Within Temptation but this is the only song I don't like from them, so if I'd heard of them for the first time, I would probably think they are bad.
Curious as to the criteria or measures used to assess rank. Number of record sales, social media fans, concert ticket sales or a combination of a number criteria. I’m surprised that Therion topped bands like Nightwish, WT and Kamelot in this list which leads me to think the ranking is entirely subjective. Which is OK too.
Don't agree with Therion being number one. The best Therion songs with the best Therion lineup are good. But long term as a group NightWish consistently releases and play better content. And yes, I think they are better with Floor. Just IMO though!

Within Temptation are to metal what Celine Dion is to metal. Amaranthe could easily have replaced them in this list and I doubt that anyone would have complained. I get that the symphonic stuff isnt all chugging blastbeats or whatever excites the headbangers but there's a line between metal and pop - they need to leave the latter to Sharon's solo albums IMO.
