Although the old Within Temptation could be considered Metal the band did say they consider themselves Symphonic Rock not Symphonic Metal. Even though that may be the case overtime they did move away from Metal. They always did some crossover stuff but these days they are more pop imo.
I am interested in checking out Haggard. I don't think I have ever heard of them, surprisingly with how popular they have been over the years. Twilight Force is the only other band that appeared in the video that I've never listened to, that I know of.
Yeah, you would think the genre would have gotten bigger as more people were exposed to it, but recently it's less than a tenth as popular as it was early on.
The different eras of nightwish are really recogniseable. I must admit, they were my favourite band until Tharia left in 2006, so I was part of that drop right there.

usually all (symphonic) metal bands benefit from Nightwish, because Nightwish has masses of iconic songs which reach much more than others also non-metal fans and can make them curious/open for more/others ...
I got into Nightwish (and metal) through YT reactions then continued with bands recommended on those videos, then further on based on connections of the band members (old bands, features, support bands, side projects ...spouses 😅 ). Nightwish definitely got a lot of my money but also generated purchases for most of those other bands.
I wonder how many of Epica's searches are actually searches for Kamelot's album Epica. Like, if you searched for "Kamelot epica" would it count as a hit for both of them?
@huh8607 Woah Nelly! That was quite a reaction. I'm not accusing anyone of anything. Just a musing considering Epica is ahead of Kamelot in 2004 when Epica the album was new and charting, and Epica the band was a brand new band who had just released their first album and were relatively unknown. They didn't hit it big until some years later. Epica and Kamelot have been longtime friends and many are fans of both. No need to pit them against each other.
@@babyyoda24 Epica must be this guy's sole purpose to live. Goes around RUclips commenting on any slightly related video just to highlight Epica's grandeur (for him)
I dont think so. Personally, I thought the list was going off of the search of adding "band" to the end of it. Sort of like "Epica band" or "Nightwish band" If they just put the band name that would mean that this whole chart is incorrect as that would mean they would have to adjust Nightwish, Within Temptation, Kamelot, all of them. But yeah, we shouldn't put any band against each other. Just listena and enjoy. Most popular doesnt mean the best or most liked.
Pra mim, ficou justo.
Not to discredit any of these bands and their popularity, but any list that's solely based on internet searches will certainly favor some bands way more than others. "Haggard", for example, is a single word that may be googled for whatever reason other than actually checking this band out. Meanwhile, "After forever" just so happens to also be the name of a movie that came out in 2022, thereby spiking interest in the name for completely different reasons. Luckily, most bands in the genre has very unique names though, so the rest of the list may be fairly accurate.
Exactly, not the best but it does help get into the genre. The very prominent symphonies and orchestras coupled with great vocals helps a lot. But soon you experience more and nee bands, you realize that Nightwish isnt the best band in the genre, just one of the more accessible ones
@@NPK476 - I discovered Nightwish over 20 years ago, before this video's timeline started, and I still think Nightwish is the best. I'm not super keen on some of the stuff from the newest album, but they do have some good songs on it.
the best is always going to be a subjective thing. I think Nightwish have the most unique sound, and to be fair I don't even know if they are really symphonic metal as they tend to wander all over the place and always have. Originally they were more gothic metal and now more folk influenced. Epica is probably the most "symphonic metal" in the list but their sound is much more similar to most of the other bands.
as someone who has listened to Nightwish for over 15yrs, ive yet to hear anyone with as much talent as Toumas when it comes to lyrics, Floor/Tarja/Annette on vocals (Marko synced well with all of em), or just the sheer energy the band puts off in any concert theyve ever done
This is one my favorite genres ever, and one of the most expensive and difficult to produce in an original way: in fact there's a huge music quality gap between those bands really employing an orchestra (mostly the 5-6 consistently at the top) and the rest, usually resorting on keyboards that emulate the sounds of the top 3, which almost alone defined what this kind of music is
This was cool and all but for me only Nightwish, Epica, Within Temptation, Kamelot, Leaves Eyes, Sirenia, Unleash The Archers and After Forever even make my personal list of artists I like. As much as I love Nightwish, they are an anomaly in music altogether. Tarja's voice backed by metal instrumentals shouldn't have even worked, let alone be popular. But it simply did. Then replacing Tarja with Annette should have killed the band as Annette never quite fit. Don't get me wrong I love Annette's energy and sunshine, definitely the most adorable of the 3. Plus her fronting Dark Element is perfection. Then Floor comes along and gives the band a versatility it never had before and played havoc with their style. So again there should have been problems. But let's be real they are at their best with Floor.
my top three would've been Epica over Nightwish because I'm not a huge fan of Nightwish sadly, Old Kamelot do miss the original singer of Kamelot then fight between Xandria or Delain as my top three choices that are on repeat for me. Though I have never heard of Haggard before would they be worth checking out?
What is of real interest to me is the overall drop of interest in the genre itself. Back in 2005 the number of searches in the top few bands numbers in the million, and now in late 2022 Nightwish can only muster around 300K searches, indicating Symphonic Metal isn't gaining a lot of new followers.
Not entirely sure how exactly you are animating those bars, but "Haggard" jumping from precisely 50100 to precisely 62625 for many years was a bit ... confusing 😉

@Huh if you prefer "Kastelruther Spatzen"... It's OK for me 😘
There is a movie called AFTER FOREVER released in 2022....
I have always thought that the 4 pillars of symphonic metal are Epica, Nightwish, Therion and Haggard. Btw, Epica is my favorite band since I was 13 yo, and I’m now 30
Kamelot is my number one
Nightwish Number 1
Nightwish insuperable!!!!!!
I can't believe Dimmu Borgir and Apocalyptica were never around
Props to Haggard who haven’t released a CD in almost 2 decades but they are still in the top 5.
i really dont understand their high position...
They stand out because of their style. It’s a classical orchestra that added metal elements and not the other way around. No one else did it that way.
@@awesomereviews1561 still they havent released anything in almost 2 decades, you barely see them playing anywhere and the last time i see them their gig was like postponed for 3 hours due to technical difficulties and then they played like 30 mins for a full price show...
And that was not the first time that occured
seen nigthwish and within temptation in november . nightwish best gig i've ever been to ,within temptation up there as well
Back in the days I really liked the underrated band Lunatica 🤘
I remember that band. I really liked Andrea's vocals. It's sad they haven't really done anything since 2009. The song they put out in pre-production like 5 or so years ago sounded cool. What ever happened to them?
there were a ton of underrated symphonic metal band in the 2000s like lunatica, magica, krypteria, nemesea
Almost the same time there was very nice Polish band Unsun, but they have not existed for long too
What a great video. I was sure Rhapsody had more popularity, but I was wrong.
I love Epica and I hope after all their hard work at concerts this year they get to have the #1 spot for a little bit… But Nightwish Within Temptation and Epica all have to be aware of how fast beyond the black hit #4 in 2019! They are going to be really popular in the coming years!Good lick Jennifer Haben
Epica ❤❤
Epica 🔥❤️🔥
The thing I take from this is "who the heck are Haggard?" I'm off to have a listen now. Every other symphonic band that popped up, and more that didn't, I know so well, but Haggard seems to have escaped me till now...
I love Haggard. The first song I heard from them was The Final Victory - not sure if it's representative, but made me look for them. The song that I like the most is Per Aspera Ad Astra.
Although the old Within Temptation could be considered Metal the band did say they consider themselves Symphonic Rock not Symphonic Metal. Even though that may be the case overtime they did move away from Metal. They always did some crossover stuff but these days they are more pop imo.
Nightwish, Sonata Arctica and Raphsody my favorites! 🤟🤟
I am interested in checking out Haggard. I don't think I have ever heard of them, surprisingly with how popular they have been over the years. Twilight Force is the only other band that appeared in the video that I've never listened to, that I know of.
Eppur si muove, the best álbum of the band
Because Twilight Force is Power metal
They are different, compared to NW, WT, Epica. They have excellent rendition of Herr Mannelig.
It’s a mix of ( actual) classical music and symphonic metal. Very good band.
As a recent symphonic metal fanboy (23 years old), this made me realize how much more niche than it used to be this genre now is :(
It really was something special years back.
Yeah, you would think the genre would have gotten bigger as more people were exposed to it, but recently it's less than a tenth as popular as it was early on.
The niche fact about Symphonic Metal allowed for more creativity because it was out of the radar.
@@Siranoxz...not really. Aside from 3 or 4 bands, the rest sounds pretty much formulaic
@@Supperbeta Its all a matter of opinion buddy.
EPICA = The BEST !!! ❤🔥
Beyond the Black arriving to the scene...
You missed Tarja in this list. She and her band they play Symphonic Metal too
The different eras of nightwish are really recogniseable. I must admit, they were my favourite band until Tharia left in 2006, so I was part of that drop right there.
Nightwish the best! 💙 Finland 🇫🇮
Nightwish Forever And Ever!!
Love all of them❤
The main 4, Nightwish, WT, Epica and AF will stay there as the quality is guaranteed
Xandria is there now and might be #1 for years to come.
Nice work on the stats! 🤘🤘
Epica y Tristania mis favoritas 😍😍😍❤❤❤
When I'm just processing the information, they suddenly change positions. 🤣
Too bad Septicflesh couldn't make a position in the chart.
Rhapsody (of Fire) from Legendary Tales to Symphony of Enchanted Lands Pt 2 is the greatest symphonic metal outside of Nightwish.
I agree 🤟🤟
This video should be titled: Most Popular Symphonic Metal Bands After Nightwish 🍷
Therion are still the fathers of sym-metal!
Epica my fav of all the times! 🖤
Xandria
Delain
Vision of Atlantis
My favourite band 💖
Sirenia
Allen/olzon
The dark element
Mørke
Powerwoff
My favorite bands 🤟✌️
@@ivanlizama4582 but xandria new line up is amazing 🤩
I love them especially ambre vourvahis 🖤🔥👍
Three of my favourites...LOVE Delain!
@@criag61 good 👍
Kamelot is a prog/power metal band, Sonata is a power metal band, Beyond the Black bearly passes for metal with the later albums after the lineup change(i am not saying they aren't good, just doesn't sound like metal to me). i mean the lines are kinda blurry but still.
Than I would call Within Temptation symphonic rock. Have u listen to Kamelot's brand new album?! It is truly symphonic power metal, Kamelot is soooo freaking good.
How I personally see it with Kamelot:
Roy era: Power
Tommy era: Symphonic
Whichever genre they want to be, their music will always be fantastic!
What happened in 2022 and 2023 with After Forever that they shot to the top for a second?
I'am questioning the same ._.
Floor Jansen became popular
@@sensorymultimedia She was already popular way before this year and last year.
Floor Factor!!

@@GuitarGirl4ever In 2022 she was part of the German Show of Sing my song, and last week she released her solo album - I think many want to know her better:)
Nightwish fan since 2004
Nightwish ranking highly at top, followed by Within Temptation for most of the time, then Epica joining as the third contender... this sums up the history of the genre quite well.
It's crazy to see just how big Nightwish is/was compared to everyone else. It's hard to beat when someone's gone so popular, they're even playing your music on the radio for the non-metal folks. :P But... is Sonata Arctica really a symphonic metal band? Not speed/power?
Surprised to See leaves eyes for so Long up there
usually all (symphonic) metal bands benefit from Nightwish, because Nightwish has masses of iconic songs which reach much more than others also non-metal fans and can make them curious/open for more/others ...
There is some truth here👍.I have seen a lot of reverences to other bands on the Nightwish reactions.
@huh8607Jesus, dude, now that was an overreaction😮😅
I'm curious where Delain falls in the list after the announcement of their new singer and new album this year.
Rhapsody of Fire por siempre!!!!
Nightwish is the gateway starter band, like metallica or Linkin Park. Not the best, but the most accessible.
"Not the best" 😂 ok! 🫠
Exactly, not the best but it does help get into the genre. The very prominent symphonies and orchestras coupled with great vocals helps a lot. But soon you experience more and nee bands, you realize that Nightwish isnt the best band in the genre, just one of the more accessible ones
@@paulmarsh4079 Aww, you discovered Nightwish like 2 years ago though reaction videos and don't even really like metal, how cute.
De que fuentes sacas este video? After Forever primeros en 2023?
Nightwish, Symphony X, Within Temptation, Kamelot and Epica are my favorite symphonic metal bands!
as someone who has listened to Nightwish for over 15yrs, ive yet to hear anyone with as much talent as Toumas when it comes to lyrics, Floor/Tarja/Annette on vocals (Marko synced well with all of em), or just the sheer energy the band puts off in any concert theyve ever done
This furious storming of chart by VoA in the end...
Xandria! Such a fighter
I misss after forever still the best band 3ver
Never heard of Haggard, gotta try it. My lovely Therion deserves more recognition. 😢
Within Temptation, my favorite by far. Sharon's incomparable sweet voice, versatility and modern sound. For me Within is 1000 times any other
last album and single Within Temptation was such a trash
Sure, they're definitely the best gothic / hard rock band. Metal? Fuck no :D
Back in the 90ies Rhapsody was very big ... I liked them!
Why did After Forever suddenly top the chart in 2022 and 2023?
EPICA will be my number one FOREVER AND EVER!
my top three would've been Epica over Nightwish because I'm not a huge fan of Nightwish sadly, Old Kamelot do miss the original singer of Kamelot then fight between Xandria or Delain as my top three choices that are on repeat for me.
Though I have never heard of Haggard before would they be worth checking out?
Nightwish is too strong..!! 🤘🤘🤘
🔥🔥🔥🔥
Love all off them
What is of real interest to me is the overall drop of interest in the genre itself. Back in 2005 the number of searches in the top few bands numbers in the million, and now in late 2022 Nightwish can only muster around 300K searches, indicating Symphonic Metal isn't gaining a lot of new followers.
I think what is shows is that there are far more bands in the genre now than back then so the fanbase is far more spread out.
The Question is: Who s the "Ghost Singer" who s Keeping the After Forever Popularity??..🤣🤣
The heavy weight on Floors shoulders keeping up more than one band at a time
I still listen to After Forever's first two albums but mainly for Mark, not just Floor.
Not entirely sure how exactly you are animating those bars, but "Haggard" jumping from precisely 50100 to precisely 62625 for many years was a bit ... confusing 😉
wooooohowww Nightwish and Within Temptation 🖤❤🔥🙏🤘!!! Sirenia aun sigue vivo !!
My personalfavourites in no particular order and across any symphonic subgenre
Emperor
Limbonic Art
Epica
Sirenia
Therion
Haggard
Virgin Black
Septicflesh
Followed by Diabulus in Musica, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Tristania, MaYaN as honorable mentions
I do really like Xandria, also like Nightwish, Amberian Dawn and early WT but less so than the uppermentioned
Beyond the Black is well on their way to taking over Symphonic metal!! 🤘🏻
nice to see vision of atlantis
Sad because my favorite one is Sirenia and they cannot be popular no matter how they try 😢. But EPICA is my favorite second one an they're always on the three first places ❤❤❤❤
