In my opinion, the most underrated rock band ever. Sabbath are my big love but Schenker is my favourite soloist.

The pitch is wrong on this video, unfortunately - it sound a bit weird to someone familiar with the song. UFO deserve further inspection, especially their live album. And Michael Schenker Group, MSG well worth checking out their first two albums and the live album, with the added bonus of stellar drumming from Simon Phillips on first album and Cozy Powell on second and live album.

Hi Andrew . Props for finally getting to hear the mighty UFO ! I think the audio on this particular link was slightly off. They sound much better ! The strings were all Paul Raymond on keys , although he later re recorded this track with a full string arrangement. He was a musical genius .
The live album from 78 , Strangers In The Night is right up there with Thin Lizzy's Live And Dangerous as the best live set ever recorded. Enjoy !!

It was a British band but Phil Mogg Wanted a very young German guitarist that was with the Scorpions in the early 70s, Michael Schenker was an outstanding musician as well as a composer, UFO was not making it in the beginning till they got Michael in the lineup and the band blew up worldwide. From 1974 through 1979 UFO had 5 of the greatest albums in the rock world and their live album Strangers in the Night is a monstrous album killer album next to Judas Priest's Unleashed in the East and AC/DC's If you want blood you got it

They were a great band, and I say ‘were’ because although they are still going, their golden era was from when Schenker joined until he left, with the live album, Strangers in the Night as his parting legacy. Some of the albums that followed were still good (Mechanix, The Wild, the Willing and the Innocent etc.), but Schenker’s addition created the chemistry with one of the best rock guitarists ever. They were successful but could have been bigger. As such they remind me of Thin Lizzy: a great band that didn’t quite live up to the actual quality of their output.
Best version of this song, as with many, is from their live album (Strangers in the Night) as already mentioned. Rock Bottom live contains one of the best examples of great heavy rock guitar playing ever recorded - Michael Schenker is a genius.

I had never heard that. Back in the early 80s I was a huge fan of Trust, a French heavy metal band that toured with AC/DC and with Iron Maiden (who actually stole 2 of their drummers). The story I heard was that Bon Scott was out drinking with Trust’s lead singer Bernie Bonvoisin the night before. Trust, who usually sang in French, which is why many English speaking metal heads don’t know them, wrote a tribute song to Bon Scott, which they recorded an English version of, called “Your Final Act”, which you can check out here: m.ruclips.net/video/1haxJoYIGOE/видео.html
It’s a bit slower and more bluesy than a lot of Trust songs, but the vocals and guitar really match the feeling fans had after he died. If you want to check out Trust you can find their 2 best English-version albums, Repression, and Savage, on RUclips. Trust’s lead guitarist “Nono” was close with Angus Young and they admired each other’s styles. For all the Bon Scott fans, check out this song. The French accent takes some getting used to, but you can feel Bernie’s grief for not being there when Bon passed.

UFO, probably the most consistent, talented hard rock band on the planet that played well into the 80's before disbanding and then reforming in the 90's. They only recently quit making albums as Phil had a heart attack a year or two ago. Very, very melodic compositions and rather unpopular. I even like their early rough cuts too, like 'Timothy', 'Follow You Home' and 'Silver Bird.' Great drumming in the last tune. These were with the original singer, Mick Bolton, who may still be in California and was some kind of hospital assistant, but has not been successfully located. I read that he doesn't want to be, either! How real fame escaped them is a bit of a mystery. When I heard them on some distant station in 72 or 73 on my little Sony radio, hanging around my old friends at a certain publishing house nearby, and started finding their albums, which were imported from Germany, no one had heard of them in America, and it sure stayed that way for a long time. All the kids I played it to at most of the parties, since i dubbed their songs to 8-track, really liked the quality of the music. Go figure. I did stay up to watch a concert in 74' I've never seen again where Schenker had his hair in his face and didn't move, while Phil Moog actually played some of the keyboard parts. Oh, I think that was a harpsicord in the segment of Love To Love, but could be wrong, and while Parker wasn't the best, but a good, proficient drummer, just the same and he came back to play with what was left of the band up until they retired. I so hope you continue to critique them - it's a fantastic decision on your part.

From this tour they made the live album Strangers in the Night. They entered the 80's with a slightly different line up and made 4 good albums.

UFO went through multiple line up changes but never lost their identity and quality. One of my all time favourites,. if you knew, you knew! They were also huge all over the world, probably more so than in Britain. Couldn't tell you why... go figure. This is not a rabbit hole you have opened, it's a full blown mineshaft......

Bought Lights Out back when it came out. Love To Love has always been one of my favorite UFO tracks, along with (naturally) Boogie For George and Prince Kajuku from their early career, Rock Bottom and Crystal Light from Phenomenon, Martian Landscape from No Heavy Petting, and Try Me (another one from Lights Out).
Michael Schenker has a somewhat conflicted history with the band. He ghosted them in 1977, then resurfaced, but left the next year for a 17-year hiatus. Coming form the Scorpions, I just have to mention the other unique, world class guitarist the Scorps had in the Seventies, namely Uli Jon Roth. Here's a live one where he goes full Hendrix playing (and sort of singing) Polar Nights: ruclips.net/video/bV3asqGVTek/видео.htmlsi=r6gJgKmARBVPAI4H. And here, of course, is Sails Of Charon (playback, but hey, what the heck): ruclips.net/video/Zs5NOrYYV2s/видео.htmlsi=rrd4bHhnVm5v8JFo
Now how did I fly from UFO to the Scorps? Dunno, it seems natural. It's the music I grew up with, so it's all interconnected in my brain. An ocean of sound, so to speak. Wouldn't wanna miss it.

How did you go to the Scorps? Well, Michael’s older brother Rudolph is the rhythm guitarist in the Scorpions, he played the leads for Blackout after Uli left, I believe MSG played shows (if not tours) with Scorpions. It is only right to go from UFO to the Scorpions.

I don't no where to start, I've been a UFO fan since the amazing Phenomenon album came out, Rock Bottom blew away 20+ of us, outside at a bonfire and it came on a college radio station. That song changed all our lives that night and I can't believe they never became a household name for the general public, they were as good as Boston, Journey or Van Halen in the mid late 70s before Michael Schenker left and killed their momentum just as they were about to be huge. He was replaced by a great guitarist in his own right in Paul Chapman but the damage had been done and they settled in as a band that could headline theaters but not arenas. They continued to record until a few years ago when primary songwriter, vocalist and frontman Phil Mogg finally retired.
They have a bunch of great albums in the 70s and 80s with Michael Schenker, then Paul Chapman on incredible, fluid, blazing guitars. You should hear Rock Bottom, both the studio original, then the live version from Strangers in the Night Live double album. One of the most underrated bands of all time and a huge influence on all those 80s bands. Enjoy! 🔥🎵🎸🎤🎸🎹🎶🔥

Schenker era UFO is one of the true 70s greats! I was planning on suggesting one of these… probably Lights Out, from this same album, or Natural Thing from the previous album, No Heavy Petting. Great stuff! Im wondering why his voice sounds so much deeper here, though. Its like whoever made this video took the audio down a couple steps in tone.

You said it, UFO was special. They are criminally underrated. I’m a drummer and I can’t get enough of Michael Schenker’s brilliant guitar playing. As others have said, you should check out anything from their live album Strangers in the Night. Contrary to how it usually works, all of the live versions on that album are better than the studio versions. Lights Out, Rock Bottom, Let it Roll… or anything from Strangers in the Night.

This is a great example of why you are such a great reactor, Andrew! Intelligent, perceptive and thoughtful, as always. Watching one of your reactions is like talking to a knowledgeable buddy about music over drinks. I especially agreed with what you said about what this illustrates about the decline in the quality of our music. There is no soul or even thought behind any of the modern cafeteria style prefab music that we are fed these days by record companies. Just like everything else in our collective society that feels dumbed down and spoon fed to people. Thanks for another great reaction!

Bring on more 70's classic rock! UFO, one of the all time best and one of my favorites! Sadly overlooked by too many. Andy, I agree with many comments already made, check out "Strangers in the Night," legendary live album. And the UFO line up after Michael Schenker left, with Paul "Tonka" Chapman, from Wales, was also an amazing guitarist. I will link a 1980 live show, on video, that totally kicks a...!!! It has Love to Love live and other great hits.

You should really listen to Rock Bottom next from their 1974 album Phenomenon. One of the most iconic melodic guitar solos of all time. Michael Schenker is a guitar genius. Huge influence on many guitarists that followed, including Kirk Hammett of Metallica.
I grew up watching and listening to UFO. In my view, the best British rock band of all time. Killer album after killer album.

Doctor Doctor is a different song than the one you were thinking of (Bad Case of Loving You by Robert Palmer).
UFO was Hard Rock, almost Metal at times. Love to Love was a power ballad with a touch of Prog. As you could tell, they could play. I prefer Lights Out, Doctor Doctor, or Rock Bottom as straight-on rockers.

Your ignorance of UFO is understandable! I've been a 70s rock fan all my life and only came around to UFO a few years ago! They never hit it as big as their contemporaries. I always think of them as a strange mix of the bands from that time - Rush, Zeppelin, Bad Company, etc. Hints of prog but a bit more straight ahead rock.

Awesome group -this lineup peaked with their live Strangers In The Night album in 1978 - Schenker would leave during that tour. Your recording here seems a bit off though, like the tape is stretching a bit, hissy top end too -maybe a bad remastered release. Phil Mogg just put out Mogg's Motel -also worth checking out!

Despite the obvious hits Doctor, Doctor, and the high energy Rock Bottom - especially on the Strangers in the Night live album, as fans don't get tired to mention, their early stuff before Michael Schenker joined is interesting too in another way. Especially the Album 2, 'Flying (one Hour Space Rock)'
Very out there jams, but with a very direct sound mix, easy to hear the musicians at work.

It's very weird, I didn't know the song but immediately recognized some bad digital artifacts, strangely the original he links to has exactly the same tempo (as far as I can hear) but it doesn't sound like this, the pitch is changed down here, that's why it sounds so broken.
I don't know what went wrong but it almost seems like he accidentally ran it through some pitch changing software ...or maybe even intentionally because of copyright? But why wouldn't he say so?
