My thoughts on the new Fellow Opus! What do you think about the budget friendly do it all grinder?
I ended up getting an Opus even though I already had a gen1 Ode. I'm definitely a function-over-form person, so I honestly wasn't that bothered with the plastic build, plus the missing auto-off and knocker. The fact that I can do my daily pourovers with the occasional espresso make me quite happy with it. The price point is also incredible for what it does, and the coffee I've made is pretty good. Because of all this, I feel like I could sell off the Ode without feeling like I'm losing too much. Great video!
Thanks! I think a lot of people will probably feel the way you feel. By the way it does have the auto off function and has the option to change the amount of the grind time based off button presses but I forgot to mention that!!!
Don't sell off the ode, get an ssp MP and let your opus be for espresso and ode for super clarity focused filter.
@@Raditram Thats a great option that I think a lot of people who already have either generation of the Ode should consider.
great content.
Don't understand why you dont have at least half a million subscribers.
I appreciate that!!! 😊
Thanks for the in-depth and honest video Aaron. Very helpful.
Thanks for watching!
I'm just glad to have something I can recommend to people who want an electric grinder but don't want to spend $350 on an Ode. The obvious alternative is the Encore, but it appears that the Opus is a bit more compact.
Yeah I think with the versatility of the Opus for the money a lot of people will be happy with it!
The alternative to the Opus is the ESP
@@jorhay1 True, another good budget grinder!
New set, lighting and grading all on point. Glad you ditched the green light. Haha. Great work Aaron!
Haha! Thanks man 😜
Thanks for the review, I've just ordered one to replace my Sage Smart Grinder... Hoping for some good results! 😄
I think you’ll be happy with it vs the Breville/ Sage smart grinder.
Amazing budget grinder love mine.
New space looks great.
Thanks!!!
This was a great and thorough deep dive into the grinder - nice work! I should be getting mine in the next couple of days and I'm hoping this becomes my new suggestion to people getting into coffee. It's still a tough sell to convince many that $200 is cheap, though!
Thanks! And I agree that most people who are not as into specialty coffee think $200 is a lot for a coffee grinder, and it's not that it's not a lot of money, it's just not as much when it comes to good grinders as you know. It is hard to have conversations with others who don't understand why a coffee grinder of all things could be upwards of thousands of dollars!
Awesome review! Im going to order one right now 😊
Love the new Opus and the 3 year warranty
Great job Aaron! Specially detail on hoper which is not mentioned by many. Wondering wearing hat with short sleeves in Arizona bro :)
Thanks! I didn’t feel like doing my hair and I had already my beanie on from earlier in the day 😂 But it does get cold here!!!
This is exciting; I'm looking for a new grinder!
Please keep making content. The quality of these videos is unbelievable.
Thank you very much, I don't plan on stopping!
Found your video as I just unboxed my new Opus today. I was using an Oxo conical grinder (about $100) for my v60 pour overs and a Baratza Sette 30 (~$250) for espresso. Neither are capable of doing both so when I read about the Opus and that it could actually handle a range of grinds from espresso to pour-over/drip, consolidating to one grinder was my main motivation. After just a day (4 pour over grinds, 4 espresso grinds), I'm disappointed in the manual they included - no mention of the inner ring. No way I could get espresso to pull using the 1 or 2 setting recommended for espresso. I ended up getting some mediocre cheaper beans so I can dial it in. Started with the lowest (fine) recommended setting for pour over, a 5, and the coffee was undrinkable. Pushed it up to 6, same thing. I don't know if the Opus came out of calibration or if their recommendations are just wrong. Then try to figure out the inner ring that isn't mentioned anywhere in the included documentation. That's how I found your channel - Fellow's ability to communicate how to use a product just plain sucks. Even watching the videos from Nick (VP of engineering), it's incomplete and not helpful. I'll spend the next several days hopefully dialing things in but I can't believe that a year after launching this, the Fellow created videos on grinding for espresso really do stink.
If I didn’t already own a Ode I would be all in on this grinder. I don’t brew espresso often so the Ode is serving me very well!
All that matters is that what you have works for your needs and you’re happy with it! 😝 😊
Nice review, I am concerned with the build quality, 200 is in the budget range for espresso grinders but if it doesn’t last because of all the plastic used then it doesn’t become a good buy. I am also looking at the new Baratza Encore ESP as the inner workings are metal and just a little more expensive than the Opus. I am even considering the Option O Mini even though it is much more expensive. I would rather save and buy a grinder that I would be happy with for several years and not be concerned about build quality.
I agree that the build quality on the outside leaves a little to be desired, but I think if treated well the Opus will last, but only time will tell. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Just for espresso, the Baratza Encore ESP looks like the obviously better grinder while it has the same price tag as the Opus. If you make pour over coffee quite a lot more often than espresso, though, maybe the Opus takes the cake here.
@@Limemill I am primarily a espresso drinker, with the occasional pour over so the build quality, both inside and out is important to me.
I backed the Kickstarter for the Gen 1 Ode, but I'm thinking that this may be more my style of grinder! Cheers
I'm not sure about it being custom burrs maybe some slight variable difference but they absolutely look like the same burr grinder from a Breville express espresso machine which i still have somewhere in my storage. Once i receive my opus i may compare and just maybe could be compatible with some tweaks 🤔 for future reference when it comes to replacement parts as well as other conical grinders out there using similar or same design to the ode.
So I had this same thought at first but I can tell you they are not the same burrs nor are they based off the Breville burrs. I’ve spoken to the engineer and designer of the Opus and Odes and he told me that they sent specific specs to their burr manufacturer to get the flavor profile and results they were looking for. I suppose it’s possible that some burrs may be interchangeable but I can tell you from comparison these burrs yield better tasting coffees than the Breville grinders. I have a smart grinder pro that I have compared with. I should have probably included that in the video… maybe I’ll make another video for that exact comparison! Thanks for watching 😊
Mine arrives tomorrow. Can't wait to test it out. Amazing video as always, Aaron, thank you!
Thanks! Congrats and I hope you enjoy it 🤘☕️😊
I was hoping when they were first teasing this grinder that it'd be an espresso ode - but then they slowly shared it was all purpose and then that it was sub $200 and i pretty much lost interest - hoping grinder 3 from fellow is more what i'm looking for
good motor seems like a plus here, but the grind adjustment seems more fiddly than i'd like considering i'd be dialing espresso frequently. At the end of the day, happy to see something good in this price point that many people will probably never need to upgrade from.
Yeah I think for more experienced coffee people this grinder probably won't fit the bill, but then again it is geared more towards entry level consumers and people newer to coffee. I think It's a great buy for the intended market though.
The Baratza Encore ESP is a dedicated espresso grinder that just came out for the same price tag exactly. And, given that it's the famous Encore, it's a good one. Especially considering the price
awesome video! this is def a great grinder at the price point. Also, I COULD TOTALLY GRIND MY WHITE COFFEE WITH OPUS. lol. just kidding.
Thanks! And honestly you could easily grind white with this. From what I understand this motor is crazy strong!!!
Was interested in the noise level, which he didn’t discuss. Don’t know why he didn’t show it in use. But would have been helpful for those of us who want to grind early when others in the house are sleeping in.
You’re correct I should have included that, sometimes it’s hard to remember everything to include in a video when you’re in the processing of making it. If you watch my Ode vs Opus video you can hear it compared to the Ode, it is louder.
Hey! Another great review, I was asking you an advice for ODE Gen 2 and there are no regrets, 3 weeks with the grinder the uniformity is incredible I got a lot of clarity with without losing a lot of body in terms of feel it feels really premium, the opus looks good, but definitely feels like a grinder for a whole different target
You are absolutely correct! 😊☕️👍
I really enjoyed this review. Very fair and helpful. Just wondering what grind setting you would recommend as a starting point for the V60? Also same question for an auto drip brewer like the Moccamaster?
Thanks for the kind words and thanks for watching! As for a good grind starting point I’d say somewhere in the 5-8 range will probably work best for general pour over but it really depends on the coffee, the dose amount, and the brewer design. I’d start in that range and just experiment. As for an auto dripper I honestly don’t know, I haven’t owned an auto dripper for a long time, but I imagine it may be in a similar range.
Would you mean to share your pour over recipe/setting for pour overs with both Fellow Grinders? Please, great review
I’ll have a video posted tomorrow or Wednesday comparing the Ode and Opus for filter brewing 😀
Curious about the differences in taste for pour overs between the Opus and Gen 2. Would love to see a video about that. Just hoping that Gen 2 will taste a least as good since I will get it this week lol :D
I’m planning on doing a comparison video between both but I can already tell you the Ode G2 is a better filter grinder unless you prefer the flavor profile of conical for filter. The Ode is specifically designed for filter where the opus is more of an “all around” grinder. I love my G2 Ode and still use it for 95% of my filter brews.
Not sure if its a fair comparison, but what are your thoughts on the Opus vs The Baratza Virtuoso+ I have the Virtuoso+ but love fellow products and not sure if I want to pay what the Ode 2 is going for. I only do drip through my Technivorm and various pourover. Thanks!
To be completely honest I don’t have a ton of experience with the Virtuoso and it’s been a long time since I had coffee ground with one! I can say that for the money I think the Opus does a very good job for filter however I prefer flat burr grinders for filter, but it just depends on your taste preferences.
I'd have to give the nod to Kitchen Aid grinder. Anti-static, super fine espresso settings, has a 54-58mm magnetic dosing handle and can grind for you and be ready in the morning. Amazing little machine for $200..
Sounds like an interesting grinder, I may have to check it out!
In my house, we have 3-4 espressos a day and the rest of the day is pour over and/or French press. What grinder is best for daily morning espresso but mostly for pour over/French press?
Honestly that’s probably the perfect task for something like the Opus! As long as you like conical burr taste profiles. You can spend more and get better results but ultimately it depends on what you want to spend money on and if that will net you a noticeable return on your investment.
13:33 Eh, for something that's $200, it should be a bit more durable. $200 is still a decent amount of money.
Other than that loving the new background and the blade-runner-esque music
Agreed, and thanks!
mm...i am using the in-built barista espress grinder at the moment. How do you think fellow Opus compare to that?
While the Breville grinders are decent the Opus has a better Burr set and motor. I have a Breville Smart Grinder Pro and while they share many similarities I would buy the Opus. The Opus flavor profile is better in my opinion.
Would this pair well as a replacement for the built in grinder in the breville?
Hi Aaron, have you reviewed the urbanic 070s flat burr grinder? If so what are your thoughts? Which is better for espresso, opus or urbanic 070s? Ty
I reviewed the Urbanic 080 a while back, you can find it in my older videos. It’s hard to say which is better because they are different burrs and produce different flavor profiles. It really depends on if you like flat or conical burr espresso more. I would say if you like modern style espresso shots with lighter roasted coffee a flat burr might be better, but the Opus does a great job with that too. I think the Opus is better for more traditional style shots.
@@coffeenerdaaron thank you so much for getting back to me so fast. God bless you and much success to you and your channel
@@carlossanchez8534 thank you!
How much adjustability is there for dialing in your shot? Like, do you only get one setting for a good shot or do you have room to play around to dial in for taste? Example: On my hand grinder I normally have 3 clicks in the traditional espresso range between around 20-30 seconds. Now, only one of those clicks fits my preference but I can dial in a 30 second shot for myself and a 25 second shot for my wife. (More like 25-27 and 28-31 because of variability of puck prep etc but you get the idea.) Basically, I am wondering if I am stuck with a single "good enough" setting with the Opus.
Thanks for the video, as always. Just watched the newest one and came back to rewatch this one. Still haven't decided when/if to go electric, lol. Six shots a day with a hand grinder is getting a bit iffy but I'm sticking with it for now.
Espresso on a hand grinder is definitely not fun, especially 6 or more shots a day!!! The Opus does have some pretty good adjustability and range but it does take a bit to get dialed in, at least in my experience. The inner burr adjustment setup is nice to get a finer adjustment range but it can be tricky, especially if you switch coffees a lot. I have experienced many times where a shot on one setting is a bit too fast so I go one click finer and then it chokes or is too slow. Then you have to play with the inner burr adjustment to change the grind size increment of the outer main adjuster steps, then try again. You can get it very dialed but to be honest it just seems like more work than I would prefer to do to get a coffee dialed, especially since I change coffees a lot.
@@coffeenerdaaron Thank you! Yeah, hand grinding is getting a bit old. :P I guess I probably really need to consider getting something stepless.
@@kitcraft9516 I would highly recommend that, especially if you primarily do espresso. Honestly for the money the DF83 with the stock burrs is a beast, especially if you prefer the more medium roast traditional style espressos.
@@coffeenerdaaron Hey, thanks. I do in fact like a more traditional espresso. More on the darker side of medium but still in modern terms, nothing oily. I was just watching your video on it. Honestly, I was thinking about the new SK40. The DF83 is a consideration but a big investment. I do hear a lot of good about it though.
@@kitcraft9516 I haven’t used the SK40 yet but I have one on the way to check out!!
Better than the sk40?
I'm going to do a comparison video very soon of those two grinders!
What size Oragami did you use in this video?
It’s the small for 1-2 cup brewing 😊
Hey Aaron! Great video man. I'm new to the espresso game. How many grams could I put in this hopper? I know it's considered single-dose but my hope would be that I could keep a few shots worth of beans in there. Do you think that would be possible/advisable? Thanks!
Not sure I would call 200$ grinder as "budget"
compared to other electric espresso grinders, yes $200 is budget
While I do agree that $200 is a decent amount of money, it's really not when it comes to espresso grinders or specialty coffee grinders in general. There are some very, very expensive grinders on the market, upwards of $4-$5K!!!
Trust me bro it's budget
No it's not the best budget grinder imho
