    Found your video as I just unboxed my new Opus today. I was using an Oxo conical grinder (about $100) for my v60 pour overs and a Baratza Sette 30 (~$250) for espresso. Neither are capable of doing both so when I read about the Opus and that it could actually handle a range of grinds from espresso to pour-over/drip, consolidating to one grinder was my main motivation. After just a day (4 pour over grinds, 4 espresso grinds), I'm disappointed in the manual they included - no mention of the inner ring. No way I could get espresso to pull using the 1 or 2 setting recommended for espresso. I ended up getting some mediocre cheaper beans so I can dial it in. Started with the lowest (fine) recommended setting for pour over, a 5, and the coffee was undrinkable. Pushed it up to 6, same thing. I don't know if the Opus came out of calibration or if their recommendations are just wrong. Then try to figure out the inner ring that isn't mentioned anywhere in the included documentation. That's how I found your channel - Fellow's ability to communicate how to use a product just plain sucks. Even watching the videos from Nick (VP of engineering), it's incomplete and not helpful. I'll spend the next several days hopefully dialing things in but I can't believe that a year after launching this, the Fellow created videos on grinding for espresso really do stink.

    I just got it and tried it out, I can see the appeal, it's easy and pretty fun to use. I'd say the main drawback is it doesn't fit a lot of water , it would've been nice to get two shots out of it. But there have to be some compromises for such a small and portable machine.

  • @collider4378
    @collider4378 5 дней назад

    Ok, 1 year review... love this grinder. I use it for both aero press and espresso (with robot). It is super simple to switch between the 2 settings and super simple to dial in. I can't think of a better budget setup than this and the aeropress. If I'm really really tired, the hand grind becomes a chore, but generally it's a nice way to wake up. I'm done grinding by the time the water is heated (oxo pour over kettle - do they still make these?). The only problem I had was when I first used it it stopped grinding. I still don't know why, but I took it apart, found nothing amiss, put it back together and it magically worked. Zero problems since. Great review Aaron. The tear down especially. Wish I had seen this at the time, that little staple that holds it together was a bit confusing.

    Followed your design more or less besides the knob with a dosing ring. I had to check around for measurements like for my bellow's outer diameter and hopper's inner diameter which was 70MM so I know my coaster can be glued on the top (my bellow has a hard cap attached but I still wanted that aesthetic) Burrs are aligned with aluminum shims and dial is calibrated for espresso! I did however switch out the phillips machine screws for the burrs (4MM x 10MM 4pcs) with countersunk allen machine screws as phillips tend to get stripped easy when its too tight... Got some knurled thumb screws (5MM x 16MM 2pcs) for the plastic front so I can just use my fingers when removing it, and a black self-tapping allen screw (4MM x 12MM) for the 3D printed knob. The coasters I had on hand, both 8CM looked a bit paler and dry so I used a combination of beeswax and mineral oil to give it some color and also protect it from soaking up water when wiping it down. It also has some grip tape on the bottom corners and the base has the round metal plate so it doesn't lift when taking the dosing cup since the coaster has a magnet. Its just oddly satisfying making a budget product work well but also look and feel nice use.

    Great video. I'm considering this grinder (D54) vs the Niche Zero. What are the key differences? I plan to use it for espresso and filter. I know there's big price difference, but l'm just trying to weigh up the pros and cons against the price. Any help would much appreciated!

    • @coffeenerdaaron
      @coffeenerdaaron 10 дней назад

      @@JordanGoucher I don’t have a Niche Zero but I have used them before, they are nice grinders. It really boils down to what you like. Whether that’s looks, burr style, size, options etc. The key differences from a mechanical stand point would be the burrs and motor. Zero has 63mm conical burrs and a 170w motor, the DF54 has 54mm flat burrs and a 150w motor. Personally I typically prefer flat burr grinders but I’ve also had great coffee from conical burr grinders. I don’t think you can go wrong with either.

  • @harveyjones5027
    @harveyjones5027 15 дней назад

    This is interesting and helpful to see. I have been using the K6 with a Gaggia Carezza with its pressurized portafilter. With that set up I am finding I have from 33-39 clicks works best from the darker through to lighter roasts, interestingly finer than you did. I am switching to an unpressurized portafilter which can be done on my machine and have been told to go finer when i do. After watching your video I am not so sure! I will start at 35 and go from there but maybe not use my special bag of beans I am about to open, I might waste a few shots getting this right! Up to this point I am very happy with the K6 though, not used it for anything other than espresso so far but after watching your video I might try pour over with it.

    Well, Turin Legato (Apex, etc.) is quite impressive. I won't tell the "pros" here but the 4 main "cons" I detected: 1/ pre-infusion is at full pressure destroying the puck, (solution would be to implement some new knob dimming pi pressure and launch the extraction in a smooth way) 2/ no OPV (but this should be not difficult to implement for next version), 3/ spare pieces? where? 4/ weak shower screen, Former version of the Legato had a HUGE flaw wrt pre-infusion. And they fixed it (but see point 2 above, remaining flaw) because famous people complaining recently on YT !! This model is quite old and spread in Asia etc. There are factories for grinders and different factories for espresso machines. I will wait, not bying until they fix the 3 first main "cons". But let's say it is not "difficult" to implement an OPV and a dimmer to control the pression out of the pump. That should be a hack to controll manually pre-infusion. So maybe RIP gaggia classic,..., or evolve quickly, I mean true "evo v2".

    Can the average coffee drinker justify the price?

    • @coffeenerdaaron

      I guess it depends on you and your preferences. If by average you mean someone who buys bulk or commodity coffee at a grocery store (which there is nothing wrong with that if you like it) then I would say no. Upgrading things like grinders and burrs really starts to unlock and express a coffee flavor characteristics in a different or more interesting way, but if your not really drinking coffees with interesting flavor notes then it probably won’t make much difference. I don’t think it will make your coffee worse, I’m sure it will be better, but it’s not going to be a crazy improvement or impact your coffees taste like it will with a coffee that already has uniquely inherent flavor notes. I hope that makes sense! 😊

    Did you know a 4th gen AZ'n is a coffee farmer? Family history goes way back, mostly in the Jerome/Cottonwood area (I was born in Tempe). The coffee industry there sure has blossomed since we moved in '16.

    As a fellow Arizonan I needed this. Thank You! Press Coffee Roasters and Yellowspruce Roasters are well worth checking out as well. Enjoy.
