Today I'm showing a few simple delay tricks that can help make your synths sound a little more exciting and make a mix bounce and move a little more! I'm demonstrating the two techniques I used in Miavono's new single "Right Here".
These delay tricks are designed to add or enhance the Rhythm of a sound. Often delays are used to add space and width.
Both of these techniques work with MIDI and Audio :)
In this case, two delay techniques are applied to the main synth.
The first is a 1/8th note delay (on fruity delay 3 that is 2/16 =1/8) which stresses the rhythm and bounce of the synth. It helps the listener move with the track and feel the timing more easily, as if a drummer is keeping time with a hi hat.
The second is a "spot delay" technique where you use automation to pick where the delay is active. This changes the feel of the transition dramatically and I felt it was what was needed in this case. Even if it's not for a transition, automating delays is something I do often, usually when delays are cluttered on leads it can be good to delay on the last few notes but It really depends what the delay is trying to do in the track. Don't be afraid of automation, it's one of your best friends and it's there to help you make awesome music :)
When adjusting the parameters, it's good to do it in the context of a whole mix.

Mike i’ve just stumbled across your channel and I’ve found it really helpful. I’ve just started learning FL in the last week and it’s very overwhelming trying to learn everything about the software. Your videos are great and maybe they are not as useful to experienced producers but for someone just starting out, just getting guidance on little things is incredibly helpful so thank you. also how the hell do you have less than 100k subs

I use a very similar “spot” delay sound in my band as well. I run my guitar through a delay set at quarter notes and then run that into a delay set at dotted eighths. I LOVE how they bounce off of each other and create polyrhythms and overtones. It adds some great movement and bounce and isn’t as predictable as standard echo repeats.

automating the level knob seems a very cool effect, like the song has a little feed back, but in a sweep it can overload the amount for a little riser or something.
or have it on 2 step, then in a break automate it to 1 step for a little break duration.

When automating, you could right click on the notch and set the type to 'hold'. It's meant for the envelope shapes you used for the verb+delay send automation.

Love, love your videos. I record a lot of country to pop to rock in my part of the world. I enjoy doing things to songs that add more interest and emotional content to the more conventional way of recording these genres. I am not satisfied until I know that has a little bit more love yet not going beyond the boundaries of intention, and of course, careful not to the point of losing the vision the artist or band may have conceptualized.. However I have learned a lot from viewing your videos over and over again. You my friend, are helping me become a better producer and engineer. I give you my sincere thanks

Dude man loving your channel you been dropping gems everywhere! I have a question, that synth part on the first delay. How did you get the synth to sound like that? It sounds almost double tracked. Is it just delayed slightly passed hass or is it something else? The call and response type delay you have is also very good, I'm just trying to find ways to push sounds out of the middle both tips help but was curious about the synth. Thank you!

I just found this video doing a search on echo delay effects after having discovered the ability to achieve what you call the 8th note delay on the ᥲpp, "Music Speed Changer", with it's, "Echo Effect", plugin.
I've been using it as a sort of harmonic resonance amplifier to boost volume capacity and to add a new level depth and body to every song.

Why did you have to sidechain that ?

    • @inthemix
      @inthemix  6 лет назад

Purences There are 2 reasons. Firstly I wanted complete control to EQ,compress add reverb to the delay without affecting the original synth at all.
Secondly, the repeater delay input only goes down to -24 dB. So sending it to another track lets me automate the volume going in. Although it's called a "sidechain" in FL studio it's really more of a "send" that I am turning on and off when needed. Does that clear it up? :)
