- How Loud Should You Master Your Music?
In this video I show you what settings to use on your limiter when mastering for the best results.
After my popular "How to Master Your Music in 5 Simple Steps" video with over 650,000 views I wanted to update the loudness specs.
Ceiling - Set at least -1.0dB True Peak. Potentially up to -2dB True Peak
Ensure you select "True Peak" - This is essential.
Average LUFS - Hit at least -14 to avoid spotify limiting and then push it louder to your own preferences.

Thanks for Your Good Tutorials ....
God bless you dear brother.....
I always appreciate how reassuring your tutorials are. The mention of you being stressed out back in the day as well, and how there's really nothing to worry about, does make the whole learning process feel a lot less daunting to me. Thank you man!
I consider myself to know a decent amount about music production but I still almost always learn something new from your videos. Also your mindset of not stressing about about things and not giving everything this weird artificial sense of urgency is refreshing.
You've done a lot for the community. You've helped me to learn and understand so much about FL Studios and music in general. I appreciate you and will continue to support

Finally somebody talked about this ✌🏼 i was looking for this video since I started to mix and master my own stuff. This really opens my eyes 🙏🏼 Thank you very much
I've read, watched, and practiced strategies behind "perceived loudness" on and off for 3 years, but something about the way you broke it down in this specific video made some major sense out of it all. Thank you!
Okay, Michael. Now I know what I'm really going to do with my track, all about mixing and mastering.
I think that you are a genius who knows what each knob does and not to just turn it up or down.
You are a real inspiration and whenever I'm watching your videos, I really think I paid for it and it's a real Masterclass.

The quality of your video is incredible. Keep up the good work, it's a pleasure to watch your vids everytime
Absolutely fantastic video! Very helpful and I will be using these techniques in every mastering session now! I used to turn it down to -0.3 for no reason other than hearing another producer say that and when you pointed it out it was clear you knew exactly what you were talking about. Thank you for sharing this important lesson with us for free!
Good video! I found it interesting to hear the info on Spotify requirements as I would have just mastered like I normally would for CD. By the way, the reason that people say the peak limit should be -0.3 dB is because that is the best level for CD mastering. It gives you a safe level to ensure that there are no "overs" (inter-sample peaks over 0 dBFS) that your limiter doesn't catch, so there is no distortion when the DAW file is converted to a WAV.
During the height of the Loudness Wars (mid-2000s), people changed that to -0.1 dB because they wanted the level as hot as possible. The reason for -0.1 dB is exactly because of your example in the video, where you set the limiter to a True Peak value of -1 dB and the meter was still reading it as -0.9 dB, i.e. -0.1 dB different!
So, once again, thanks for the info on Spotify. It's interesting that streaming services do extra conversion of files and I will be adhering to their standards when using those platforms. Cheers!
great info!
I think new original cds and new vinyls have much awful distortion for example Taylor Swift Midnights who has very hard kick and bass and no high end!The same happens with some greek albums that reissued for first time in vinyl the last year, it has much distortion, very loud sound, and more lowend with hard kick and bass, that the original 90s cds.
Thanks so much for giving a professional opinion about this stuff, there's next to no good tutorials on this
thank you for sharing this one! really helpful for my releases
Everything fantasticly explained! Thanx!
Keep dropping that knowledge bro!
Great work.

Thank you for this! You explained this topic very clearly and simply. Question though, "What about music that isn't being uploaded/streamed and just listened to as a raw file from a music player (eg. on a phone, laptop, etc.)"?
Thanks so much for this, its exactly what I needed to hear!!
Hey Michael. I love your channel bro, absolutely appreciate what you're doing for us newbies.

hey michael. Do you recommend exporting a master track for each streaming service or exporting only one master track that fits most of the criteria? thanks a lot
Thank you.. I was struggling with this for a long time .. now I think got something accurate I can base my approach on.
Thanks Michael. Excellent explanation.
If we could just get back to the standard loudness levels of CDs circa 1993, that'd be great. Modern mastering sounds like someone scratching plastic next to your eardrum.
the chronic album is a good reference
Just use AAMS.
I love this guy. He takes it slow and explains things so simple. I actually feel like I learned something watch this.
Thank you so much for this video Michael. It really helped and clarified a lot 👍😊
Actually -0.1 and -0.3 came from Redbook CD standard, remember those? Thanks for some great tips :)
You're right! It's a shame people carry it over into the streaming world but hopefully we can help change this a little bit :)

Mhmm! It's a great thing to follow when working with CDs and basic computer storage, but when it comes to modern streaming services, the rules are switched up a bit.

Did you hear about fl studio winning bed DAW?
Yeah it was amazing to see that, no big surprise though ;)
Nah. Reaper is the best.
what about RUclips loudness limit ? in 2019
I searched on internet and i couldn't find ...
I've heard tell (though have not been able to confirm) that RUclips normalizes to about -13 LUFS.
You can see what normalization RUclips's done to a video by right-clicking on it and clicking "Stats for Nerds." The "Volume / Normalized" line shows the value of the volume slider vs. the actual volume the video is being played at, as well as the overall loudness of the audio. Aim for a "content loudness" of 0 dB.
Is it still true that RUclips won't add volume to a track to make it louder but will limit its loudness?
Correct. RUclips will make loud audio quieter, but will not make quiet audio louder.
broooooooo, you have so much juice on this channel, THXXXx
Thank you for being so calming. Very articulate and smooth, great video.
they all work off average loudness ( integrated LUFs) so if you add a long and really QUIET outro it will bring down the overall average loudness value of your whole track... so they wont turn it down as much resulting in a louder track. I wouldnt aim for -14LUFs for club or edm music ... doesnt have the same energy and overall glue. Also distributors only use the 1 file to pump it out to all platforms so -14LUFS might be ok on spotify but not beatport... and i would do a separate master for soundcloud ..push it harder and boost the highs a tad more as you lose them from the conversion
good point
Indeed. Popular songs on Spotify are usually mastered around -8 LUFS. For others it really depends on the genre though.
@@YouleanSoftware I agree ...between -8 LUFS to -10LUFS integrated for club or edm ... has the energy ,loudness and punch.. I pushed it to -6LUFS and put that up on spotify temporarily and it sounded flat
@@N1K5TA Yes! You always must take in consideration other songs no matter what Spotify wants. :)
People start to know about LKFS/LUFS aka the end of the loudness war
Not yet -14 dB LUFS still 2 loud
Giulio Boobzilla I’m working on a project mastering right now, and I agreed, in France the new limitation for broadcasting is 23 LUFS, and for music I don’t feel confortable above -16 LUFS.
Flying Island
I think dat we also hav -23dB LUFS 4 broadcasting here in Germany.
-16 still sounds a lil squashed if U r mastering.
Dey should limit @ -18 average 4 songs worldwide.
@@giulioboobzilla Most pop songs are easily over -10db lufs, not -14.
GangstarapMadeMeDoIt
-10 may-b on CDs, but streaming services limit b-tween -16 & -13dB LUFS
Oh my gosh. The comment you made about tonal loudness changed everything for me! Thank you for this video. Even though its on the older side the concepts described are so poignant.
You are terrific! Well done maestro! Well done!
So, my - 0,3 on limiter are wrong?
It depends on lots of issues, e.g. what's the highest short term true peak, what platforms are considered by you for releasing your tracks on, what format and quality are you going to save it as, how the whole mixing and mastering process was done and others, so it's hard to judge if it's wrong or not. I recommend you to extend your knowledge about music production so that you can manage to answer your question. Watch ruclips.net/video/h-QCQiOkufc/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/uQ57_VLPDAA/видео.html and maybe it can help you decide whether you master your tracks properly.
@Ertronic it's too small LUFS for typical EDM
Don't make your mix too loud
Skrillex: -4 LUFs take that
That is the thing I don't understand ...
Riot :- Hold my -0.7 LUFS Integrated
Metallica's Death Magnetic: Hold My Beer
