Warren visits Big Bad Sound (bigbadsoundla.com) and gets a tour of the studio. Zach Fisher has converted an old house in Silver Lake, CA into a fantastic recording studio with a really great vibe. He has an SSL AWS 900, Otari MX5050 Tape machine, tons of great outboard gear, and a fantastic live room...with a full bear skin on the piano!

Boy nice set up . I used to have the same OTARI when I had my little recording set up in the 90's. Then 97 got out of music all together. I still love the sound of it .

My brother builds some hairball 1176 kits. He has a stash of original input transformers, you just mount them and wire them into the hairball circuit board. On the vu meter circuit, and the sum and difference circuit run +-.1%, 15 ppm temperature drift resistors. Keeps the meter calibrated, and high accuracy for that one circuit. I'd also change the few carbon composites to military grade metal film by vishay in the feedback loop circuits (all the million ohm and higher ones basically) and the input for noise and less temperature drift. Simple, cheap, upgrades.
Glad he brought up Chris Squire, huge influence on the music world that man.

Just stumbled accross this vid. Love the enthusiasm. My first formal job in 'Rock n Roll' was building the AC/DC Backline cages for Back in Black tour. Many anecdotes stayed on that tour!
@23:23 This is why I love you Warren. It's all about the sound for you.
My favorite records of all time sonically speaking are Queen, Beegees, Toto, and Def Leppard. Photograph has to be the best sound recording I've ever heard. It STUNS ME that they got THAT GREAT of a sound for the time and technology they had then. They were all put to tape in roughly the late 70's to early 80's all legit. They got the sound dialed in right from the very get go so when it hit tape it was mostly done. That's totally different than the "record raw and fix it in the mix" mentality we have now. It's a lost art to commit to tape like they did. I'm more daring nowadays and my records are a LOT better because of it.
The talent it took to be THAT GREAT, is underestimated even by musicians and sound engineers today. They didn't just get the best sound of all history on the best songs of all time, they also did it on 2 inch reel to reel TAPE! I know I don't have to tell you this but many times they had to bounce everything to open up tracks and pray that they'd mixed everything right because once they bounced the tracks, that was it. They'd adjust for frequency build ups and keep on trucking....layering.
I heard Freddy Mercury sang so many background vocals for Bohemian Rhapsody and they bounced so many times that by the time they were done the tape was almost clear, or you could see through it etc. LOL. To sing that well...time after time...and that on key is AMAZING. Years ago I heard Brian May say that Freddie was so talented he could actually sing in and out of phase with himself on purpose for back up vocal parts. So musical, natural and tight. What a talent. No easy comping or melodyne autotune like we do nowadays. They were just hella talented. I love that sound. The Beegee brothers simply stood next to each other and sang off of each other to get those perfectly blended and in tune tight harmonies and vocal double tracks. "How deep is your love" is a perfect example of that....in the late 70's ON TAPE! I think I've made my point.
I'm so glad they came up when they did because I wonder how many of those epic recordings and songs would have been MASSACRED in a modern studio. Imagine Whitney Houston in her prime being mixed in a modern studio. I heard a "remastered" version of "I will always love you" and it was so limited to hell that it never bloomed. It didn't sound nearly as strong, big and open and my heart sank. People of the older generation knew what they were trying to do, and the sound, vibe, and personality they got by hitting tape hard was magical. Dare I say it's addictive. Modern recordings don't really get that.. I can't feel them like I feel great analog. The vibe. But with a great hybrid system I think we're getting there.
Ask Mutt Lange what he thinks a red light here or there means in the studio and I'll bet serious coin he'd be on the same train as you. Actually.... Have you ever interviewed Mutt? I searched that out and couldn't find anything. Do you think he'd be open to that? THAT WOULD BE EPIC!! Sorry so long...just passionate about music and the best analog records ever, and really appreciate your talents and efforts. Have a marvelous day. =)

I had a Twin back before I knew better... pulled one of the speakers out. Played the Twin with 1/12. Note: If you do this, pull the spker from the heavy side of the amp :-) Since 1993 its been my 58 deluxe and my 93 Pro Jr in stereo. Only ride one horse a 58 Les Paul special with Seymour Duncan PUs. Neck PU 99.9%. Great video btw.

Very cool studio, it's great to see a smaller studio and the gear they're working with. It would be great to hear a small sound sample of each studio you visit maybe a small snippet of audio in the outro of the video. Either way as always, it was a pleasure to watch.

Just to add to the comments at 8:45 on the video, Steve Jones' used a 1972 Fender Twin Reverb but with Gauss speakers. I did read somewhere that it was 'liberated' from The Wailers store of instruments left at the Hammersmith Odeon.

Really tasteful studio! The SSL Sigma summing amp can read automation data if set up correctly in your DAW, such that you can hit it evenly at its operational level and allow the automations to occur within the "super"analogue circuit. Maybe this would make more sense in your scenario, Warren? The Neve 8816 summer, fader pack and USB Total Recall, another option. I personally think passive summing mixers, or even active ones with transformers on every channel are only at their full potential when you take advantage of having a bunch of separate stems in analogue that you can patch a range of outboard to and record the whole chain in a single pass.
The sonic differences compared with ITB summing are difficult to form a definitive opinion on, because unless you're working with a two track (as above), the best way to use a summer during mixing is to have it engaged from the beginning and mix into it, rather than just turn it on at the end.
The cost to set up a summer that actually can automate in analogue, where there are other benefits not addressed in typical summers, is so high that you'd start to compare it against selling your old SSL and buying an automated one instead! Or hey, if it aint broke ...

Greg Wurth's studio is the perfect embodiment of a hybrid layout - and it's so neat and tidy!
Many studios are trending towards such a setup too. You may have heard Ronan Chris Murphy announce that they ditched their console in favour of a no frills hybrid setup?
I really enjoyed see him publically demonstrate that pragmatism and not GAS is the best approach.
A lot can be said for making the most with what you already have, or even downsizing if your environment loses focus, and as you would put it, "always be recording"!.

Which mic do you prefer on a Marshall, Vintage 30, 4x12 cabinet playing rock, not metal? The Sennhieser 609 or a Shure 57? Assuming its the 57, when, if at all would you consider using a 609? Great show as always.

Would be nice to hear some audio samples of how his hybrid setup sounds hitting tape. There are no audio on the site. Maybe run "Warm" through PT - SSL - Tape.

I've been racking my brain about who intentionally sliced their speaker cone... I want to say Les Paul because he invented everything but I'm pretty sure it was Dave Davies. Randall invented the distortion pedal - when he went to patent it, apparently the patent officer said "Nice design, but it'll distort" ! mmm... yeh exactly! It was Davies. Les Paul may have invented everything but he would never intentionally distort his sound... Not his style.

Thanks Warren! I am recording on my lap top via usb right now my only other port is an ethernet port. Is there any way to get an external sound card or converter that will connect to one of these ports. I am limited on my preamps using usb. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

A great study who might have it. The only downside is ... painting the poor dead bear on the piano? Perhaps it serves to absorb you record? no sense otherwise ahelluva study might already use for my mixes and compose my music because it has everything and looks fabulous.

Can someone outline the routing for this set up?
A) Microphone -> Pre Amp (in the rack or whatever) -> Tape Machine -> Tape Outs -> Pro Tools -> Pro Tools firewire to SSL which is acting as a controller? -> Pro Tools output on say 2 track to Tape?
B) Microphone -> Pre Amp (in the rack or whatever) -> Tape Machine -> Tape Outs -> Pro Tools -> Pro Tools outs into SSL analogue (so just acting with for example 28 XLRs going in, with control automation) -> Master bus -> Tape
C) Other?

Why not buying Wave bundle has all those plugins and a good computer lot chipper. Everything is digital now so there is no pint to buy all thats stuff in a studio. Thats more for live performance.
