@@UnderDunnOfficial The great news is that you now have a new experience to learn from, and the end result isn't a total failure, as it does have some form of a use. Also, love your videos. As I said in an Aging Wheels video: it takes a good presentation style to make me interested in topics I had no prior interest in!
I made a similar MDF shelving unit about 25 years ago for use in my bedroom. It was ugly as well, and it was soon relegated to the garage. That shelf is still there to this day, stoically holding my tools and spare car parts. You made a wise investment. May it bring many years of utility for you as well! BTW - you may be sick and disheveled, but your editing skills are unmatched.
Well, you hit 2020 right on the head with this one. We're all sick, don't want to put on proper pants, and aren't able to quite accomplish our goals. Everything is always fine.
I love your stop action portions. Robert, you have a great attitude and you're such a funny guy. Don't ever stop making video's. You learned something new about cheapo materials lol.
I agree. During the stop motion parts I just thought "Wow, look at that nerd go." I've been sick for over a month now. I had a cold, then bronchitis. I thought I was getting better, but I got worse again.
My dad did something like that for us kids, but he did a set of smaller boxes that could be stacked up as shelves. It turned out to be fun to rearrange them all now and then as the whim hit us. Also he used plywood.
I have also previously experienced cheaping out on materials. I built my current desk, out of MDF, and at that the stuff that is covered in basically white paper. I built it some years ago, and I would suggest against building anything out of MDF. I'm pretty sure building a desk out of balsa wood would have turned out more sturdy, and hold up better to even some light abuse.
Idea. 3 scaffold planks, 6 steel angle brackets, fix to wall, and place scaffold planks on them. Job done! What's not to like? ......As I said, just an idea!! Happy new year from UK
Shouldn’t worry too much I failed at putting petrol in the generator today. Forgot that there was a red petrol can with diesel in the back of the fucking van. Generator is not a happy bunny. Excellent videos thanks.
I think subconsciously you wanted that unit to put all your toys away after you finish playing 😅. Oh btw thanks for sharing your experience, as a new woodworker I finally can see some one doing great job without fancy tools so I feel I can do the same, cheers
I'm glad I rummaged around in your back catalogue of videos to find this GEM 🤣 Btw I have NO prior interest in any of the things you do here but you make them fun or even interesting sometimes. Somehow I'd love to see you cook at least once :D
New here; I just wanna say you present with a very.. Doug DeMuro cadence, yet somehow without the condescending tone. Content basically watches itself, really well done, thanks for the work you put into making it.
0:35 - Upvote for Mickey Mouse sayin' '...so the child has somewhere to put all of his crap'. XD Never a failure, sir! Always a lesson. You tried, you learned, now go foward with the new info! Awaitin' version 2! /Also, I think it looks really good!
Melamine board might look a little better and is still cheap. It's particleboard with a finished surface on it. Still needs edge banding. I was going to make a shelving unit out of it once, but the sheets were so heavy I couldn't really move it by myself. Every sheet had a chipped corner as well, but that's home depot for you.
If you are going to build a shelf unit that large for a child's (not sure if it was your child or just some random child) room maybe you should consider building it in sections and putting it together in the room. Also maybe have it on the floor and attach to the wall so it doesn't tip over. Besides being on the floor would probably be a lot better for the child to reach al the shelves.
Thanks for reality not fluff. Woodworking is about experimenting and no one avoids ugh moments. My experience lose the biscuits and rabit with glue and nail gun. Luan plywood back can cut the weight. I have also done the edge banding but now I rip and edge out of real wood glue and pin nail. I do alot of elaborate picture frames and the pin nailer is an epiphany. Did you paint with a sprayer or a brush and roller? Keep them coming.
As a German, dear Americans, if you keep using junk food-related terminology for your (woodworking) tools, this will not help reduce the sterotypical view of the fat American very much. :D
Looks fine from a distance but why add all of the weight with backs to the compartments if the plan was to screw it to a wall anyway? Just cheat and paint the wall behind it white... Anyway I never thought about it but being a RUclipsr must be great for tax, you can write anything off if you use it in or for a video and that really is pretty much anything.
Found the same thing, it's very difficult to buy materials and build something cheaper than you can buy it for especially off Facebook market place. I have taken to getting things from there and customising, that can be quite fun and cheap and unique
I like having the home center cut MDF sheets into strips that are more manageable. It costs either nothing or next to nothing and so far (fingers crossed) I haven't gotten an employee who is bad on the saw so the dimensions, despite their "no precise cuts" sign, have been fine.
I think your biscuits are a bit loose in the kerf there. That might be why they didn't help with alignment. Although, I don't use biscuits, I tend to do joinery instead, so I can't be certain.
heh one way I got a dedicated iron for edge banding was to use my wife's iron, In which I liberally applied all the glue squeeze out all over the face of the thing
There’s a reason most people buy that sort of crap from IKEA. When you’ve put in such a tedious amount of effort into building something that actually might cost less to buy you understand how ikea is so popular.
Though about making a custom bookcase but then I got about a dozen IKEA’s BILLY bookcases for free. People keep giving them away on Facebook when they buy new furniture. But maybe that’s a Swedish thing.
My friend you are your own worst critic, I watched the video even though you said not too. It was enjoyable and fun as all your videos are and BONUS you have more room for TAX write offs.... I mean tools.
One of the thumbs-downs is probably from the child who still has to pick his way around scattered personal possessions. (Sorry for the assonance.) Wishing you and yours all the best this year-especially good health, obviously!
If you re-film the intro as a down and dirty garage storage unit it’s a total success. But failure is more entertaining... thanks for entertaining me. 👍
Watching a sick guy who sounds like Mikey Mouse fail to build a shelf is exactly what I subscribed for 😂👌🏼
Lmao I know right
Same here😆
Me: Hey, that shelving unit looks pretty good.
Rob: This was a complete failure.
Me: Okay then.
I was surprised by how good it looks on video. It's a 20 footer project. It's mostly just poor fit and finish

you've literally just described engineering in its entirety
Design wise, great, material choice, fit and finish were the issue I would say.
I couldn't stop laughing during the intro, thank you, that was glorious.

It has already fallen down and he burned it.

This man, with a flu, could do more than I could with a cold...
Get well soon mate! Though I can't lie, I do like the Mickey Mouse impression haha
This man made his sickness our enjoyment, great job, Rob!
0:24 *child overhears..*
Mummy, is Daddy OK? Is it safe for us to go to sleep tonight...
Thanks for the info on MDF and all that, Mickey 👍👍
I wouldn't be opposed to listening to an entire video done in Mickey Mouse's voice. That was hilarious.
My dad did something like that for us kids, but he did a set of smaller boxes that could be stacked up as shelves. It turned out to be fun to rearrange them all now and then as the whim hit us. Also he used plywood.
Just want you to know this is absolute genius. Telling the wife you are building toy storage so you can get shop storage!
3:44 "i'm far from done" ummm no, you ARE Dunn?!
I was really hoping for an Under Dunn pun but we can't all get what we want
No he's not he's UNDER Dunn.

Robert is a great Mickey. And an AWESOME editor.

I prefer biscuits made from flour, and especially if there's country gravy too.
Instead of making it a single unit, make it sectional and then use dovetail connector pieces. Those can be dry installed for later movement of unit.
I think subconsciously you wanted that unit to put all your toys away after you finish playing 😅.
Oh btw thanks for sharing your experience, as a new woodworker I finally can see some one doing great job without fancy tools so I feel I can do the same, cheers
My regular shop “uniform” is pajamas.
I'm 1m30s into the video and I just can't stop giggling at your voice, expressions and humour. 😂😂😂
I really enjoyed this video. Ironically that enjoyment had very little to do with the project itself.
I'm glad I rummaged around in your back catalogue of videos to find this GEM 🤣 Btw I have NO prior interest in any of the things you do here but you make them fun or even interesting sometimes. Somehow I'd love to see you cook at least once :D
Even though it wasn’t as intended I wouldn’t call it a failure; you ended up with a decent piece of shop furniture and learnt from the experience!
New here; I just wanna say you present with a very.. Doug DeMuro cadence, yet somehow without the condescending tone.

"i sounds so creepy"
Continues with joke anyway >__
Hahaha: “but the paint doesn’t look very good, (under breath) because I’m not a very good painter”... hahaha so funny!

I come from the future where 'spoilers' this shelf meets an timely demise.
Love your humor in these videos, it really adds a nice touch.

Why haven’t I seen this channel before? You, sir, are just my kind of weird. I like it! *subscribed*
A completely successful shelf for the shop... well done, young man.
Great work. Even in "failure" we learn, as I'm sure you did. Thanks for making a video of it! 👍
Got an oldskool jay Bates vibe 👍👍
That biscuit joiner montage was super satisfying to watch!
Not a bad looking failure, you know for workshop shelving. *:-)*
How does this not have more views? Mickey Mouse does wood shop? YES PLEASE,
This was my first video I'd come across of your channel. I subscribed 2 minutes in because you speak my language. Please continue. Amazing.
His own ice cream truck? That's a kid after my own heart!!!
I'm just imagining him having the voice all the time, fantastic if a little unnerving. 😆
Oww, I wanted an entire episode in falsetto
1) IKEA
2)Oh you're owned my a dachshund too.😄
Next video, a visit to IKEA, lol!
Wheego
Pajamas in the shop .. How decadent

On camera it looks great! Nice that you managed to get some use out of it even though it was a failure ;-)
Sometimes if the biscuit jointed isn't dialed in or the cheaper ones will have a lot of play in the pockets.
This was fun, and today I learned that one type of biscuit probably doesn't taste very good or dissolve in tea
Does it carry a side of tooth pain and splinters?
@@DanielPinel Yes, and likely constipation too
On the bright side, you got content and a biscuit jointer out of it!
Video was not a failure at least. That was a pleasure to watch
Kind of looks like some sicko in pajamas broke into your shop and built some shelves.....o wait. Nevermind.
it's okay, i just made spaghetti bolognese and wondered what cloves would taste like mixed in and now i cant taste anything else
Great job anyway ... The amount of tools you have is tremendous
As a British person I can't not laugh when you say that you are using biscuits to align things.
If you're confused as to what I mean: cookies.
As a German, dear Americans, if you keep using junk food-related terminology for your (woodworking) tools, this will not help reduce the sterotypical view of the fat American very much. :D
In french too, cookies are biscuits :)
Biscuits are a food item in the US, as well. Wood joining biscuits resemble cookies, hence the name.
Bro, the intro😂 that might be the funniest thing I've seen on RUclips
It's the "whatsoever" that gets me 😂😂

Just found these videos.. my new favorite channel
Robert, you're sick too often! Take a multivitamin and eat lots of fruit and vegetables.😀. In any case another well made video!
Dino Stamatopoulos did an entire Harmontown podcast with the voice he uses in the beginning :'D
Best intro i have heard in a while. awesome work.
I just love your energy!!!
You are awesome

Get well soon my friend - and have a great new year!
huh. you have been working on that shop-vac cart for a while. Just saw it in this video from JANUARY!
I like having the home center cut MDF sheets into strips that are more manageable. It costs either nothing or next to nothing and so far (fingers crossed) I haven't gotten an employee who is bad on the saw so the dimensions, despite their "no precise cuts" sign, have been fine.
How have I never seen this national treasure before?? Omg I'm crying of laughter xD
That shop vac system with the cyclone addition looks neat. Please make a video of it.
amazing video....
I think your biscuits are a bit loose in the kerf there. That might be why they didn't help with alignment. Although, I don't use biscuits, I tend to do joinery instead, so I can't be certain.
When I was a kid I had a big wooden box it look quite nice actually it had a top that opens with hinges that's perfect for kids toys AKA trunk
Missed opportunity to have the glue-up sound like the biscuit jointer.
heh one way I got a dedicated iron for edge banding was to use my wife's iron, In which I liberally applied all the glue squeeze out all over the face of the thing
Dumb question here: when you're ripping using the circular saw and that wood fence, how are you holding the fence in place?
There’s a reason most people buy that sort of crap from IKEA.
When you’ve put in such a tedious amount of effort into building something that actually might cost less to buy you understand how ikea is so popular.

And also the tax writeoff
What was that edging tool? Also, close up of that vacuum cart?

You were absolutely right about all the voices.
That moment when a trip to ikea doesn't seem all that bad....... :P
That's not a failure, it's a learning opportunity experience 😊
that intro caught me off guard and i am glad it did
I knew those shrooms in highschool would come back to bite me.

Great video!! Keep up the good work!
I'm watching this after you've destroyed it. Surreal.
question: if you've got all the tools and knowhow to make decent stuff, why did you pick particle board to begin with?
Sorta looks like the dude from Dawson’s creek
