I could care less about what this video is about, I’m just here cause this man has me in tears from laughter every time I watch a video. The way he edits it with quick cuts is just stellar!! This needs to be a series on some sort of home network!!
One thing to keep in mind, just because they come out of the same factory doesn't mean they're the same. Motors, bearings, blades, etc. can be easily changed for different production runs, other parts can be binned so the nicest ones go into the most expensive and the worst (but still usable) ones go into the cheapest, and how much effort is put into quality control can change. Are they actually actually going through the effort of doing all that? Who knows... I'd still buy the cheapest one though lol
Many foreign factories don't bother stocking more than one set of parts. Even if it is the cheapest thing and somehow does manage to be built worse than the thing right next to it on the production line, his $400 savings will cover any shot bearings plenty of times over - Or just once if he does the right thing of getting nice quality ones immediately and still ends up with an amazing deal.
Not to mention the motor is probably not the same. You get what you pay for. More money has been wasted trying to save money by buying cheap. It always ends up costing more than buying the right thing the first time.
@@tarstarkusz He didn't buy some cheap brandless knockoff that'll break in a month, he bought a fine product. That's exactly where the best value for money is. If you just go for the expensive brands you end up paying a lot just for brand recognition. Take cars for example. Buy the cheapest car you can find and you'll be paying through the nose for repairs, but that doesn't mean you should go and buy a Tesla or something if you want the best value for your money.

I kind of agree that if you are in the consumer market with only occasional light use, something like what he has might be OK and possibly even the best bang for buck. Paying for a brand with machinery is not like with clothes. You are paying for the reputation and the after sales service, parts availability You are not paying for a label, you are paying for what that label represents. The real weak point of most consumer equipment is duty cycle. This thing probably has a 5-10% duty cycle.

I wish you had the time to make more videos. I have no idea what you would make videos about, but I love the videos that you do make. I find the information so interesting and actually helpful, and most of the time it's things that I would have never thought of before as doable

I did install carbide blades which helped a lot but same as you I find the chips can be annoying. I also have a Dewalt 735 planer that I would like to change out the blades to a helix style. Once again thanks for the info and look forward to more

I did the same thing to my Ridgid Jointer and kept the original cutter head in whole. I did the assembly when putting the Jointer together. It works great and thank you.
I hadn't realized post-production helical cutter heads were a thing. I might have to look into upgrading my planer. Now that one was a deal - due to a bar code error and an inattentive/unknowledgeable worker at Menards, I got it brand new for $10.
Or the worker new full well what was going on but just couldn't care less or even better could just go with the "oh I just scanned the part it said it was $10 so I got the $10 from the customer and sent them on their way I have no idea what a helical cutter head is". Which seems far more likely to me and what's Menards going to do about it I can't expect their employees to know what things are and how much it should approximately cost

Great video! I found that a ton of other tools fit the same profile... lots of brands and colors but all made with the same specs by the same manufacturer. Saw that in spindle sanders and scroll saws too.
Just upgraded my Ridgid to Lux Cut with your instructions, thanks! When I finished, my cutter wasn't aligned with my outfeed table properly. I had to reposition the outfeed, and then reset my infeed table depth gauge to be in sync.

those bases are nicer if you make with a piece of scrap 3/4 plywood, i only say this because building them this way rather than with the metal erector set stuff gives a shelf when done. i have this jointer and personally like to a bunch of paint cans under it and find the added weight helps make the machine a bit more sturdy when using it.. thanks for the upload your content rocks
I bought this same jointer for our shop at school. The cost savings allowed us to get the Rigid lunchbox planer as well. Aside from removing one guys fingertip(his fault, not the jointer) I never had an issue.
I made a base from 3/4" plywood, bolted 4 swivel locking casters, works like a charm except, it makes my Rigid top heavy. Wanting to make the cutter head change myself. Cheers :)
Picked up a ridgid jointer last week on craigslist for $300. It came with a rolling tool base and was practically new. Really want some helical heads for this and my planer. Shcoked to learn that the tools are the same as powermatic/grizzly and others. Sounds like it should be a good little tool for a long time. Also, quick update, retail at Home Depot is now $799 so close to $900 after tax now.
I bought the same jointer from a retired woodworker who was moving and needed it gone. He left the knives really sharp and the bed was super clean. He recommended shallow passes and at first it was a dream. I went through a lot of red oak and some hard maple until a few months later I was having problems with box store pine. Knife sharpness and set-up are more important than I seem to remember most times when dealing with my machines.

I wish they made a helical head for my old (1960s) Rockwell 4". The entire thing was free... I inherited it in super great condition from my dad... and more than enough capacity for my shop needs & space to use it in. ;) The only cost to me was to build a new stand for it (
See if Sheartak makes one. They're in Canada. If they don't already make one you could send them yours and they can design one. They didn't make a helical head for Shopsmith 12" planers until a guy (who is on RUclips with less than 100 subscribers) who lived 10 minutes from their factory called and asked. They said to bring his planer in and they'd make one. Now they have the Shopsmith planer head available for anyone to buy. I assume other companies would make a helical head for your Rockwell but who knows how long it'd take and how much it would cost.
There is one argument to be made for the straight knived cutters (I still recommend helical): They have a uniform surface finish. You get some mild but noticeable scalloping with helical cutter heads, but that can be sanded away if it matters (outer surfaces) or ignored if it doesn't (glue lines, inner surfaces). All in all, I'm extremely happy with the cutter I put in my dad's 40 year old powermatic.
I've put everything in my shop on rollers. I use the 30x19 furniture movers from Harbor Freight. $17 at full price but can usually find discount coupons for $13 or so.
if you’re willing to go tabletop model, I have the wahuda 6”. spiral cutter head instead of helical. works freaking great. I keep saying things like, oh that panel came out perfect.
I have the same Ridgid jointer. I have no problem with Ridgid tools. I also have their band saw and recently replaced the TS360 Table Saw with a SawStop. That being said, they are cheaper tools. Everyone to their own. My experience with Ridgid has been very positive. Also, I have the Bora wheels on my Ridgid. How right you are!!! I’m going to immediately order the “generic” mobile base! I”m also going to order the helical head. I went through the pain of replacing the straight blades 2 months ago. They’re already nicked. I’m “Dunn” with straight knife cutter heads!! :D
My wife got me one for father's day about 15 years ago. Not knowing what to look for, she just said, "Give me the best you got at the Ho** Dep**. Been very happy with mine but was seriously looking for a similar upgrade. Thanks for the information.
Funny, true, and imformative. I have Bora PM-1000 mobile base on my 14in bandsaw, and I do not have this problem. Mine rolls around easy and steers good. I have the same jointer. I bought Ridgid TS3650, this jointer and a HF dust collector with upgraded filter from a friend for $500. Best purcahse ever. Way better than my 2nd best purcahse, Stanley No. 45 with box, a full box of cutters, all accessories, and a No. 171 thrown in for $70. 3rd best is probably a type 11 No. 4-1/2 for $30. I had to drive over an hour one way to get it. I installed Shlix head in my Ridgid 13in thickness planer, and it's been great. I thought about upgrading to a helical head on jointer, but it's not determined yet. I want to get an 8in jointer then get a helical head eventually, so spending money on this 6in may not be the best investment for me. Since I have quite a few hand planes now, I tend to reach for hand tools if I am only jointing a few boards. When I am milling more than 3 pieces, I take the jointer out and batch through them quickly. The push blocks came with this jointer are not very good. I feel the foam padding can be too slipery. I recently bought a pair of grout floats. Initial impression is pretty good except they are a little big. I may cut them down a little.
I just want to let you know that every time you say Menards, I chuckle to myself. I feel like it's what a pirate screams when you kick them in the bollocks.
Their jingle is "save big money at menards!" Even in my mid-thirties I still walk around that store singing about my nards. If we're honest, I think we all do.
CMT has some orange tools as well, one spindle router head would cost the same or triple than your scrap metal jointer. BTW it's never the colour, it's more the quality and the brand, the last should be the price tag. That jointer way struggling with a piece of pine, because the motor is under powered. Even with the hellix will not do a proper job on hardwood.
Great video. I upgraded my thickness planer a couple years ago, and I'm looking forward to putting a helical head in my 15-year-old Ridgid jointer. Until then, it's an extra step to joint, plane, and then flip it over to plane the tearout from the side that I joined.
@@TheSnekkerShow Ah, there's the rub. Also in Elm. However, how many times do you run across changing grain direction? The only way to handle that situation, prior to finishing, is to use a card scraper. (like in a tree stump.)
Recently found direct tools myself, bought a "factory blemished" portable wet/dry vacuum that was basically perfect. Sadly they don't have a store where I am so it's online orders only. (maybe that's a good thing?)

I've had the 6" Ridgid for several years now. I got it at HD for $350 (IIRC) used it sparingly because of the chips it made, 0r should I say slivers. They were difficult to collect. I had stop often to clear the chute. I got one of those cutter heads like you did a couple of years ago, and chip removal/collection is 100 times better. I cobbled some 4x4s and some casters I had to make the thing mobile, I have a postage stamp size shop. Anyway, replacing the cutterhead makes such a difference. Nice post.
---- you remember correctly: got mine years back from HD and it was $349.95 - bought one and ordered a Shelix cutterhead the same day : never even tried it with the straight knife set-up - so I doubled the cost of the jointer and count it as money well spent

@@darkdelta ---- yep: I have an old 1942 Delta 6" jointer that I would like to put a helical cutterhead in but (a) i haven't found one that fits, and (b) it's hard to justify the cost for a duplicate tool I really don't need ( but when does 'need' matter when tool hoarding ) - I also have a 1952 Craftsman 4" jointer I really want to set up with a helical head - that I would use - again, I don't think anyone makes a drop-in head for it - but I do have a 4" helical cutterhead for a shaper with a 3/4 inch shaft - and my SIL has a lathe and knows how to use it - so, maybe.

The difference in sound as it cuts is remarkable. It sounds like a legitimate tool after the upgrade.

I had to drive over an hour one way to get it.
I installed Shlix head in my Ridgid 13in thickness planer, and it's been great. I thought about upgrading to a helical head on jointer, but it's not determined yet. I want to get an 8in jointer then get a helical head eventually, so spending money on this 6in may not be the best investment for me. Since I have quite a few hand planes now, I tend to reach for hand tools if I am only jointing a few boards. When I am milling more than 3 pieces, I take the jointer out and batch through them quickly. The push blocks came with this jointer are not very good. I feel the foam padding can be too slipery. I recently bought a pair of grout floats. Initial impression is pretty good except they are a little big. I may cut them down a little.
I just want to let you know that every time you say Menards, I chuckle to myself. I feel like it's what a pirate screams when you kick them in the bollocks.
Their jingle is "save big money at menards!"
Even in my mid-thirties I still walk around that store singing about my nards. If we're honest, I think we all do.
I'm a PC engineer. If I try to do any woodwork, I'll lose my fingers. Why am I watching this? Because I find it interesting.
I think the purpose of a jointer is for edging boards for glue up. The surface is for getting boards flat so they can be planned!

CMT has some orange tools as well, one spindle router head would cost the same or triple than your scrap metal jointer.
BTW it's never the colour, it's more the quality and the brand, the last should be the price tag.
That jointer way struggling with a piece of pine, because the motor is under powered. Even with the hellix will not do a proper job on hardwood.

I have the same jointer from HD. I too have not been happy with the feel of the cutting. I think I'll have to explore the Lux Cut III option.

Great video. I upgraded my thickness planer a couple years ago, and I'm looking forward to putting a helical head in my 15-year-old Ridgid jointer. Until then, it's an extra step to joint, plane, and then flip it over to plane the tearout from the side that I joined.
If you are getting too much tearout, are you sure you are reading the grain correctly?
@@tkarlmann Yes, but for woods like tiger-striped maple, the grain changes direction every quarter inch.
@@TheSnekkerShow Ah, there's the rub. Also in Elm. However, how many times do you run across changing grain direction? The only way to handle that situation, prior to finishing, is to use a card scraper. (like in a tree stump.)
@@tkarlmann I saw most of my own lumber, and encounter grain changes quite frequently. A card scraper certainly comes in handy sometimes.
Recently found direct tools myself, bought a "factory blemished" portable wet/dry vacuum that was basically perfect. Sadly they don't have a store where I am so it's online orders only. (maybe that's a good thing?)

Depends on the wood you are jointing and how how sharp the knives are. Usually knot free wood will glide right through a professional unit

I've had the 6" Ridgid for several years now. I got it at HD for $350 (IIRC) used it sparingly because of the chips it made, 0r should I say slivers. They were difficult to collect. I had stop often to clear the chute. I got one of those cutter heads like you did a couple of years ago, and chip removal/collection is 100 times better. I cobbled some 4x4s and some casters I had to make the thing mobile, I have a postage stamp size shop. Anyway, replacing the cutterhead makes such a difference. Nice post.
---- you remember correctly: got mine years back from HD and it was $349.95 - bought one and ordered a Shelix cutterhead the same day : never even tried it with the straight knife set-up - so I doubled the cost of the jointer and count it as money well spent

@@darkdelta ---- yep: I have an old 1942 Delta 6" jointer that I would like to put a helical cutterhead in but (a) i haven't found one that fits, and (b) it's hard to justify the cost for a duplicate tool I really don't need ( but when does 'need' matter when tool hoarding ) - I also have a 1952 Craftsman 4" jointer I really want to set up with a helical head - that I would use - again, I don't think anyone makes a drop-in head for it - but I do have a 4" helical cutterhead for a shaper with a 3/4 inch shaft - and my SIL has a lathe and knows how to use it - so, maybe.

just for the newbies- "same factory" does not = same quality. All factories provide levels of quality for specific price points. Price points drive the design and manufacturing not competition.
