that kinda reminds me of how shigesato itoi, the developer of Earthbound and the Mother series as a whole, is actually a celebrity in Japan. Man's had an entire show dedicated to him trying to find buried gold and while he was filming the show, he was also working on Earthbound and even wore a jacket promoting it on set
I think the fans being concerned about his health isn't just 100% extrapolation of one story from one point in time. We lost Kentaro Miura earlier this year, and he was 54. That hurt. Sakurai is 51. I think fans are becoming more and more aware of the superhuman load these creators shoulder when they're still just physically human.
It's a huge problem with Japanese work culture, there's a reason why they have a specific word for death by overworking. Japan is probably the only country with a worse overworking problem than America and it SHOWS.
Also, as far as we knew nothing in the press has said that anything has changed to make it so that he wasn't continuing to get sick from overwork. Like, if Sakurai got clipped by a drunk driver, and was recovering in the hospital, you'd be worried for him, but that's not something you'd expect to happen to him again soon. Yes, in the most general sense. Almost every actual production of anything has weird exceptions specific to that project though, which is why it gets muddled and confusing.
Love your input and rephrasing of the interview! Really great elaboration Also I love using screencaps of Sakurai's lines that follow his "don't use my image for your beliefs" like "do you think I don't have emotions?" and "what's the difference between being alive and dead" or whatever it was x3

So, not hearing that the IV incident was a brief thing understandably worried fans, because they care about him. I really find translated interviews interesting sort of a bare bones one to one where you find the most blatant opinions thrown at you. More of these please Max!
The thing is that Japan is NOTORIOUS for overworking, to the point where they have a specific word for death by overworking. It's a huge problem in Japan, and for a guy as passionate and involved as Sakurai, it's not really unreasonable to be worried about him. This is a known phenomenon that has lead to some truly tragic deaths of creatives, most recently Kentaro Miura. Also Sakurai has been pretty public about how insane his work ethic is and I don't think he realizes how unhealthy it is, probably because Japan really does encourage its workers to work themselves to the bone.
I wish they would do more casual conversations between developers, also would love a "Real Talk," podcast segment with Max just talking games, games news, and gaming potential. Theorizing games is always fun.
By ghost, they are referring to the process of making the media, by over thinking about the familiarity of the process making the game, programming, researching and so on, you became desensitised and only see the process and can sometimes lose the appreciation of the art made. Like in the movie the matrix, after a while all you see is the code.
I love the interview between two legends in the gaming industry. Harada and Sakurai rocks! The more Sakurai ages, the more he looks the same. That’s the good life. 😊👊🏾
I feel like max is that guy at a party when you and your friend are talking and just comes and stands there trying to join in the convo lol. Its like he's the edited in 3 wheele here
I certainly sympathize with Sakurai about the memes. While i find some of them funny (hell, i’ve done a few myself)-and there isn’t really stopping the memes, price of fame type shit-there’s a line between funny and obnoxious. Evidence: whatever Sakurai tweets, check the replies
I love interviews like this that humanize the developers that are making these games, it's easy to forget sometimes that they are people just like us and not just a company.
I love the dynamic between these guys, Sakurai always goes on these talks about real life and creative stuff like that, while Harada breaks up the serious mood with his jokes and blunt honesty about things.
I wouldn't even call this an interview. Its more like two men sitting down having a casual conversation. And its nice and interesting to hear the sides of these two specifically. I hope we get more like these with more directors or creators
When i seen that thumbnail i immediately thought to myself ah yes the boys like this harada literally defends sakurai on Twitter one some talking $hit about him
Thank you to Max and the story from Sakurai about the sugar. I also know how hard it is to break those addictions. It’s good to listen and to confirm from a community about these struggles. Mine is salt. Or was… that’s stuff is just drugs, and they’re trying to keep us addicted. Great Stuff!
At around 11:00 of this video, Sakurai said one of the best takeaways I’ve seen here. Too many faces are used to say whatever other people want to say. It may have started as a meme, but over time it can go a bit too far as more people start to accept it as a real quote. Also, to add on, when it comes to a Director and the Music team lead, etc. There is most often this extra creative layer that the Music director must take into consideration. Almost all non-music Directors kind of know what they want the music to do, in their head, but often have no idea truly how. They just have a vague idea. It is up to the Music Director to take on that responsibility of hearing the request of the main Director, use their ability to read the conversation, look at all the other types of art that is already in there, for the music to go behind, and then figure out how to make the music that the main Director “really wants in their soul” but never could actually envision. This is actually a good weight to take off the main Director. There are so many times the selected music is something the Director never thought of, but got the pleasant surprise that it was way more fitting than they ever could imagine a piece would be. In some cases, like for film, the music director may have enough freedom to get the vague Director’s wants, and completely be the one that defines what the music is set out to do in it. For instance, a decision where the music is based on the characters’ delusions vs. the reality outside their heads. Etc. It could go in such a wild, but consistent direction, that it completely “re-flavors” the entire work, in the end. But ultimately, it’s up to the Director to decide whether that idea is great, in the end.
If Sakurai and Harada made a podcast channel, I’d subscribe to it. If they made monthly podcasts like this interview, that would be amazing. This shit is entertaining.
it really breaks my heart that Sakurai has resigned himself to game development until the day he can no longer do it, that he cannot reconcile with the idea of... just living for the sake of enjoying it and lstanding firm that your legacy speaks for itself.
It's called "karōshi", and I learnt it for the first time from a certain video game anime.
This interview was so interesting and fun. I love it!
What the fuck? He's one of us!? - It's a beautiful discovery.
I love the interview between two legends in the gaming industry. Harada and Sakurai rocks! The more Sakurai ages, the more he looks the same. That’s the good life. 😊👊🏾
I would fund a let me sleep shirt for Sakurai. Don’t even have a switch but the man deserves a nap.
Evidence: whatever Sakurai tweets, check the replies
i don't have twitter, how's the comment section are like in there
@@riz3778 It's a mix of people spamming memes, trolls, insult and sometimes praises.
He finally found out about Harada's Bar
I love interviews like this that humanize the developers that are making these games, it's easy to forget sometimes that they are people just like us and not just a company.
what if pepsi man was the final smash dl character?
I'd immediately main him
I hope Harada has more developers over that are just as well known as Sakurai. Would kill for an episode thats a one on one with YoshiP
I love the dynamic between these guys, Sakurai always goes on these talks about real life and creative stuff like that, while Harada breaks up the serious mood with his jokes and blunt honesty about things.
18:30 aged like... ice cream, left out in the sun
I wouldn't even call this an interview. Its more like two men sitting down having a casual conversation. And its nice and interesting to hear the sides of these two specifically. I hope we get more like these with more directors or creators
It feels weird being able to see Harada-san's eyes in this much detail.
Man I cant believe Max called it that when sora comes out there will be no more smash brothers
When i seen that thumbnail i immediately thought to myself ah yes the boys like this harada literally defends sakurai on Twitter one some talking $hit about him
I LOVE your smile and laughter, Max!
I use Cruise Control when cops are driving behind me. 🤣🤣🤣
He WAS working his flippin body to the ground for smash. And melee. And brawl. And the other two. And ultimate.
18:24 Sora is the last character so Max is on to something
Max predicts it again
I like how the title is this was a hilarious interview and it just max dropping crazy knowledge
Max: Who needs Cruise control??
Me, a Texan: T-T
Max... You have the potential to have a highly successful podcast. The casual topics you went over were surprisingly enjoyable to listen to .
Bruh, Sakurai's shirt is the visual description of "drip".
Oh man I feel like sakurai called out terminal montage for the jokes where he would put sakurai's face and in and have him say stuff.
Who needs vf6 when we are getting melty blood
ive been waiting for max to talk about these interviews !
I love how on social media Harada always acts like a big mean boss but in reality hes such a chill guy
Harada is like Sakurai's personal friend and translator.
This feels like sakurai is teaching harada something
man what an interview two legends just talking really love these guys great interview
Papa Sakurai is Such a Gem
it really breaks my heart that Sakurai has resigned himself to game development until the day he can no longer do it, that he cannot reconcile with the idea of... just living for the sake of enjoying it and lstanding firm that your legacy speaks for itself. I couldn't finish this interview when I was watching it because it caused such bleak thoughts to bubble to the surface for me.
Honestly, this isn't a unique problem amongst Japanese devs (and Japanese workers in general)
Thats just japan man
In all fairness, Sakurai enjoys his line of work so it's not exactly that bad, at least until it gets to the territory of overworking
At 19:31 Harada looks like Japanese Brad Pitt😂😂😂
Alternative title for this interview
A Special Talk with Sakurai Roasting Bandai and Harada for 40 minutes Hahahahaha
Max: 18:27 Sakurai is saying stop asking for Sora
October 5th: Sora Lights up the competition!
Max: DAMMIT!
"Developers are actually people." - Sakurai
This is the the video game equivalent of seeing your school teacher at the supermarket or something and thinking.. Wth you have a whole life outside of teaching me? Lol
20:08 We must protect that smile~✨✨✨
19:58--22:11 This is the first time I recall seeing the IV thing addressed independently of the Smash Bros development, which I guess comes to show how strongly a narrative can take hold. Also, body cells are a surprisingly nifty metaphor for how people change; "Offscreen Inertia" is quite something, eh?
12:55 yes this happened to me and I noticed it after starting game art creation. and I was afraid that I wouldnt feel immersed in a game ever again because of this xD
Sakurai looks like a mii
Almost thought max got a zoom interview with Harada and Sakurai
you should make these for all of his fg developer interviews!
We’ve been knowing he loves fighting games just by looking at melee and its mechanics
11:16 Harada knew that he could not change society, yet he never cast blame onto the beasts.
shoutout to harada da legend
