Sakurai is the best. I don't know what the future of Super Smash Bros. looks like, but I hope the industry remembers him as the charming and charismatic father of one of the most landmark titles in video game history. I'm not confident that there will EVER be another game that celebrates the medium like Ultimate did.
Ultimate mostly celebrated the Japanese side of things, not so much western or indie games. So I struggle to call it a celebration of the industry as a whole.
@@Neoxon619 that's the thing, he stuck to his values. Lot of western games are not appealing lately, and clearly design has been suffering (cough Halo, Saints; examples) due to their designers. @@Neoxon619 I see where you're coming from, but remember that the origins of the video game industry as we know it today are rooted in Japan. Sakurai did give nods to various iconic Western franchises like Minecraft, Doom and Banjo Kazooie, and while I would have liked more prominent representation, I think he struck a good balance between fan requested fighters and classic characters that were paramount to the growth of the medium in its infancy. Ultimately (lol) I prefer seeing characters like Kazuya and Hero who were instrumental in shaping the gaming landscape to most popular Western choices.
@@Neoxon619 We got Banjo and Steve, both wholly western characters for the first time (Diddy and K. Rool could also be considered since they were made by Rare, but they're from the Donkey Kong universe which I'm sure most would argue is still Japanese). Plus a ton of non-fighter indie representation, Shovel Knight assist trophy, Shantae spirits and costume, Cuphead, etc. The roster obviously still leans heavily more in favor of Japanese IPs because it's made in Japan, by Japanese companies, and a lot of its sales are from Japan, and it carries over the roster of past games. But in terms of Western/Indie representation, Ultimate is clearly the best yet.
It's also worth noting that Hit Stop is not only used in Game animation, but is a staple in Anime. Except of course there, it can be exaggerated as much as you want. More than glad to see Sakurai doing this. It'll be more helpful than perhaps even he realizes.
But...multiversus has hitstop...you hit someone really hard they stop and shake violently. I haven't played NASB in forever but back then the hitstop while being short was still there lol.
He needs a thumbnail of him puzzled looking at Waluigi with the title "Why I didn't make Waluigi a smash ultimate fighter" or "Why Waluigi didn't need to be in smash ultimate". You can hear the view counter going up.😂
A few smash whiners here and there that didn't get the memo that Smash is (for now) a dormant franchise. But otherwise, it looks like gamers with a passion or indies with a vision having civil discussions and handing out tips, or discussing the validity of these things in certain genres..
I like the approach that sakurai is taking his channel with, I mean I kinda expected this kind of approach when he's been known to be this humble an informative. I knew there was gonna be a Maximillian Dood reaction to Sakurai's channel popping up on RUclips at some point and I'm happy for that. Also, Sakurai looks really effing good for a 52 year old man. He can easily pass of as a dude in his mid 30s or even early 40s.
alot ofanime fighting games and especially mvc games have stop moments: whenever u do a super a big picture of your charactere shows up while breifly stoping the fight for it. thats what makes super so goddamn cool!
Sakurai making videos about videogame development reminds me Scott McLoud's Understandind Comics books. It's amazing someone as big as him doing this, we don't deserve him lol
Great Stuff! The hit stop thing is very helpful, because you don’t know if the cool _”big moment”_ you want to do would work in live-multiplayer (like CoD, PUBG or something), and it totally could!

Imagine Sakurai attempting launching this channel when Nintendo was hunting for anyone using their content. Bro that would be some true super smash ish.
Sakurai is really the biggest good guy in this industry. Really, I am curious how deep he is planning on going since it does feel like he could go completely nuts with so many different aspects of game creation.
So he created a fake ballot with pre-determined winners. Refused to fix Hero because he wants him to be that broken that badly. Lied about how hard it was to get content from Square Enix because he wanted Sephiroth in the worst way. Lied about Nintendo wanting Byleth in the product to "market" FE3H, and later we found out there was no increase in sales. Outright implied he doesn't care about new fans with his infamous "fun" remark. Lied about Rex & Pyra being too technically demanding despite a launch-day glitch proving otherwise. Stirred drama during COVID thinking that it wasn't possible to develop games from home. Didn't want Heihachi because he couldn't "fly". Said that Spring Man wasn't ARMS mascot, even though he's right on the boxart. Deemed Assassin's Creed & Resident Evil as "participations trophies" while Sora, Bayonetta & Banjo get the hero's welcome. How that for being a "good guy"?
@@backup368 Would you like me to list off the EA, Ubisoft, Activision-Blizzard, 2K, Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, etc. controversies as a counterpoint? Last I recalled, I don’t believe there was a big backlash over anything that was listed off (while Byleth was just a poor call at best and not the reason why everyone suddenly lost all hope in Sakurai and saw him as a bad guy). But hey, I got time on my hands, so I’ll be happy to answer the reasons to the best of my ability. Feel free to brush them off if you like, but you did put the challenge out there and I do want to try and come up with some responses. -The ballot was at the time for the Wii U/3DS and chances are a fair sum of those arrangements couldn’t have been made at that time. As for the following, it was likely to still gauge interest while using it as a means to show those who own the IP that fans want to see them playable. If they couldn’t be done in the first season, then the second was possible too (but overall, it wasn’t like there was a guarantee that it would happen or not. -If he wanted Hero to be broken, then he wanted hero to be broken. That and last I checked, Hero hasn’t been the broken menace that we thought it would be (as later DLCs certainly overshadowed him). But if that makes him a bad guy, then I guess there’s a disagreement in design, so that’s a personal preference and nothing wrong with that. -Square Enix Licensing is overall stupid. Probably had to work extra hard to make that one happen (since he probably did want Sephiroth badly, but couldn’t do it for the first season. Probably only had enough wiggle room for hero and that was it). -So if Sakurai wanted more Fire Emblem in Smash, then he wanted more Fire Emblem in smash. Again, could be a personal choice, but definitely wasn’t the best time to make that happen. -I’m guessing the quote was something along the lines of, “"fun" or "good" design in video games is subjective, differing from person to person. It can be a balancing act on trying to have characters that are fun and characters that are recognizable. You’re not going to satisfy everyone with every single choice made and he was aiming for diversity and I want to say none of the DLCs did play like each other or anyone on the cast. -So he made the choice of having a playable blade over the driver and blade. Could be done, but he went with the simpler option of just Pyra/Mythra. If he didn’t see Rex as an engaging enough playable character, then that’s that I suppose. -COVID in itself was a mess and I’m not going to touch that since I know my workplace dismissed me under similar circumstances. That and the game development in itself is one I know I can’t answer properly that doesn’t have a satisfactory response so I’ll leave it at that. -That or Kazuya was just as much of the face of Tekken as Jin or Heihachi and decided to go with the Tekken’s first protag? That or he probably didn’t want another character who recovers by doing an uppercut. -I thought the ARMS developers said Spring Man wasn’t the main mascot. That and we know the main lead did play favorites with Min-Min, so hard to hold that against Sakurai. -And that last one is subjective. Leon and Ezio would have been great, but if they didn’t make the cut, that would mean either the Capcom or Ubisoft said no or Sakurai didn’t see the value in them being playable as opposed to other choices. If you hate Sakurai, all the more power to you. I just don’t see the guy as someone who is bad for the industry. Hell, if it was bad or wasn’t worth the time, I’m sure a good sum of the people he made deals with wouldn’t have bat an eye towards him. But either way, this was a fun comment to write. Pretty sure there would be concerned if Mai bounced. And if Mai was added in flat in Smash? Well that would have had a different backlash there (and you can't exactly cover her up like Mythra since that would basically go against the entire design of Mai). Not much to say on the laughable response of Final Fantasy 7 in other games if we are talking about costumes of the character and not specifically the characters. I'm sorry I didn't explain that one fully since I would have thought the idea of just cutting out the driver and making the blade playable would have been simple enough. I loved this discussion on hitstop! The Touhou games, specifically 7 and 8 implemented a mechanic into hit stop called: Death Bombing, where you can activate a bomb during the hitstop to negate your death and pull off an even more powerful bomb for massive damage.
@@sinteleon It's not. It's more akin to Bursts or Combo Breakers from fighting games where you give up a large amount of meter or other resource to stop a huge combo. It's salvaging a bad situation, especially since in Touhou and other similar games you get bonus points for not using bombs.
Maybe Harada's Bar wasn't the main inspiration. He already did something similar in his Famitsu column, an I think he was participating on a podcast a few weeks ago. I think this was a natura step for what he has been doing.
Sakurai is an incredible developer and director. Not only has he a huge library of games under his belt, with smash and especially Ultimate he has dug deep into the trenches of different IP's. When designing characters for smash he always makes sure they convey the spirit of the source game franchise. That takes some incredible deep understanding of game design and if he is willing to share his mountain of knowledge everyone who is a game developer should listen and learn from this man.
One of the greatest hit stops in video game history has got to be Akuma's Raging Demon ending a round. The visuals of getting caught by a kind of slow-moving shadowy figure sliding almost all the way across the screen to grab a peep, then the screen whiting out, followed by sparks and punch sounds of an invisible 15-hit combo, finished off with Akuma standing over a thoroughly defeated and grounded person with his back to the players, a symbol of power suddenly appearing both on his back and on the background, and an unforgettable sound of a loud, echoing "chwing" (the quality of which differs depending on which version of Street Fighter you play) to punctuate his absolute dominance.
I immediately went to his channel and subbed this is like a dream come true for me, game dev was my life long dream but unfortunately I'm an accountant so watching his channel about creating games will be great, maybe one day I'll make my own game who knows? XD
another great fighting game hit stop moment is the classic Super Flash with that split second "did I push a button or am I blocking" never gets old. Especially with Supers that zoom in on the user giving a "you're dead" look.

Max-senpai is so nice to give his best advice for his kouhai, Sakurai-kun
Am I the only one enthralled just by the animation Sakurai is using on his videos. Even the simple stuff looks so good. Prolly his wife's work too.
Never forget the honorary third member of Sora LTD: Sakurais' Cat
Bro made a whole episode just about his cat; it's great ❤
It's also worth noting that Hit Stop is not only used in Game animation, but is a staple in Anime. Except of course there, it can be exaggerated as much as you want.
More than glad to see Sakurai doing this. It'll be more helpful than perhaps even he realizes.
I hope Sakurai talks about his life growing up, his inspirations, reasonings, everything about his life.
I love the idea for this channel, I wanted to be a game designer when I was younger
Max, please edit your description to include his channel! Sakurai would love the boost in engagement
Just search for the channel. Most people are probably gonna do that when watching this.
Those thumbnail shots spread throughout the video are killing me lmao
The thumbnail bit f*cking killed me xD
Never thought I'd see Max reacting to Joel's video 😯
Max’s editor, parrying out Max’s curse words out of RUclips’s algorithmic ears. BIG🧠BRAIN.
He's schooling NASB and MULTIVERSUS on how to be better lol
But...multiversus has hitstop...you hit someone really hard they stop and shake violently. I haven't played NASB in forever but back then the hitstop while being short was still there lol.

...oh lord.
I'm more worried about the bots.
And RUclips's pathetic censorship & their awful employees
It's actually mostly nice supportive stuff from what I've seen.
A few smash whiners here and there that didn't get the memo that Smash is (for now) a dormant franchise. But otherwise, it looks like gamers with a passion or indies with a vision having civil discussions and handing out tips, or discussing the validity of these things in certain genres..
Thanks for sharing this Bro! Had no idea that Mr. Sakurai doesn't work for Nintendo anymore and is sharing his thoughts on RUclips!
I like the approach that sakurai is taking his channel with, I mean I kinda expected this kind of approach when he's been known to be this humble an informative.
Hopefully RUclips keeps there paws off his content, and hopefully he never runs into issues with RUclips.
But knowing the platform right know it's... Kinda hard to figure out what's going on with RUclips.

Was NOT expecting a Max reacts to Vinesauce Joel at the end there.
Max reacting to Joel's Heman bit was not something I thought I'd ever see
I knew there was gonna be a Maximillian Dood reaction to Sakurai's channel popping up on RUclips at some point and I'm happy for that. Also, Sakurai looks really effing good for a 52 year old man. He can easily pass of as a dude in his mid 30s or even early 40s.

Hey that's my notification, I was letting Max know Sakurai has a youtube channel but I was about 30 seconds behind
It’s been a slow day and I do miss writing these long posts. Have a lovely day.
@@mas8705 _"Would you like me to list off the EA, Ubisoft, Activision-Blizzard, 2K, Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, etc. controversies as a counterpoint? "_
Do they all have to do with petty monetary things like loot boxes or not releasing a certain game in 20+ years?
_"Last I recalled, I don’t believe there was a big backlash over anything that was listed off"_
Because Sakurai can do no wrong it seems.
_"-The ballot was at the time for the Wii U/3DS and chances are a fair sum of those arrangements couldn’t have been made at that time. So Sakurai, according to his narrative, only gave himself 4 months to finish this "winner". If he were aware of the time he needed to obtain the rights to a third party character, he should have heeded his own advice as he said earlier that it "takes several months" to develop a new character. Bayonetta was datamined in mid 2015 updates of Super Smash Bros. for Wii-U. Apparently just him admitted he wanted Bayo was asking too much.
_"-If he wanted Hero to be broken, then he wanted hero to be broken. Hero's random RPG move allows him to use a move called bounce, and this move works against 80% of Villager's move-set, so this gives Hero an unfair advantage. Sakurai could have opted to remove the number of attack options, reduce the BP capacity or increase the BP needed for this move and Sakurai refused. Imagine if Tony Huynh did nothing about Taz's tornado or Finn's backpack.
_"-Square Enix Licensing is overall stupid. Probably had to work extra hard to make that one happen (since he probably did want Sephiroth badly, but couldn’t do it for the first season. Probably only had enough wiggle room for hero and that was it)."_
This is laughable. You likely aren't aware that other games have gotten the rights to multiple Final Fantasy characters before this, such as LittleBigPlanet 2, Phantasy Star Online 2, Puzzle and Dragons and Tekken 7.
_"-I’m guessing the quote was something along the lines of, “"fun" or "good" design in video games is subjective, differing from person to person. He said it's more important to have characters that are fun than characters that are recognizable. All this tells me is that he's just going to choose the characters he wants. As you said, fun is subjective. But no, he was't aiming for diversity if more than half the DLC consists of JRPG characters.
_"-So he made the choice of having a playable blade over the driver and blade. Could be done, but he went with the simpler option of just Pyra/Mythra. If he didn’t see Rex as an engaging enough playable character, then that’s that I suppose"_
I was expecting a response that was more cerebral.

Prior to 2020, he invited Toby Fox to his house. Does he suspect Undertale had been made in some corporate office setting?
_"-That or Kazuya was just as much of the face of Tekken as Jin or Heihachi and decided to go with the Tekken’s first protag? That or he probably didn’t want another character who recovers by doing an uppercut."_
Then why was Heihachi a mii outfit since Super Smash Bros. for Wii-U? Why wouldn't he make one for Kazuya instead seeing that he's the "face of Tekken"?
_"-I thought the ARMS developers said Spring Man wasn’t the main mascot."_
I recall Sakurai saying this.
_"-And that last one is subjective. Leon and Ezio would have been great, but if they didn’t make the cut, that would mean either the Capcom or Ubisoft said no or Sakurai didn’t see the value in them being playable as opposed to other choices"_
They got permission to use the characters for add-on content, so what is different about making them into full-fledged characters?
Oh and how could i forget Sakurai lied about the CERO ratings board banning Mai Shiranui? She recently showed up in Fall Guys.
@@backup368 It would be fun to keep doing a giant back and forth, but I'll just summarize a few points since it we went through everything, that would be a bit much for both of us. That and if it is something that's a personal belief, then there's really not much else to say there since we just agree to disagree.
"Do they all have to do with petty monetary things like loot boxes or not releasing a certain game in 20+ years?"
Varying levels of Sexual Harassment, and Discrimination and overall mistreatment of workers (crunch and other fun delights). Doesn't apply to all, but kind of a shame that it feels like a pick and choose depending on who you want to cherry pick. Really, the loot boxes are just the cherries on the top.
For Mai in Fall Guys. It's funny to bring that up if they made her flat. Almost like the idea of "Smash is for good boys and girls" was just demonstrated by making her chest smaller.
That and I'm not going to try and figure out how the mobile market works (and why bring up Tekken 7 if that was more FF15 than FF7?). I can't say I'm good at the negotiations and who knows what the hell Square is thinking nowadays so I can't really say much else there.
As for the "Cerebral" comment. I'm sorry I didn't explain that one fully since I would have thought the idea of just cutting out the driver and making the blade playable would have been simple enough. I know I go on tangents, but didn't thank that one needed a full explanation. Simplier is better, but I guess that isn't much of a cerebral response, so we'll leave it at that
Honestly, if you hate the guy, all the more power to you. But I personally have no reasons to hate him myself. If you have problems with the way Ultimate was handled, then sorry it wasn't made for you. But a fair sum of people I guess are as blind as myself, I suppose. Either way, thank you for the responses. Haven't had the chance to really go all out on the writing, so this was a nice change of pace.

"Sexual harassment" like the kind that's kept secret from higher ups? "Discrimination" real discrimination or you're not allowed to yell at me because I'm this race, gender, sexuality, etc.? Crunch is also nothing new, games have always had deadlines to make.

I loved this discussion on hitstop!
The Touhou games, specifically 7 and 8 implemented a mechanic into hit stop called: Death Bombing, where you can activate a bomb during the hitstop to negate your death and pull off an even more powerful bomb for massive damage.
Plus one of the main character Reimu's special abilities is that she has more time to death bomb than the other characters.
Sounds like a parry/counter, but still, yes. :P
@@sinteleon
It's not. It's more akin to Bursts or Combo Breakers from fighting games where you give up a large amount of meter or other resource to stop a huge combo. It's salvaging a bad situation, especially since in Touhou and other similar games you get bonus points for not using bombs.
Also, death bombing takes two bombs, unless it's the last stock. But infinitely better than dying, because you lose all extra bombs.
I think its an amazing initiative from Sakurai. I've subbed to his channel as soon as I saw what it was about.
Max watching Joel in the end
Something I never knew I needed
