20:58 I literally laughed out loud and considered shedding a tear when Sakurai said "I'd like to think that it lived up to those high expectations." Uhhhh, yeah I'd say it lived up to the hype, and still does 21 years later.
@@nicohalt3165 Sakurai intended for Smash to not have combos, Smash doesn't have traditional combos but the game evolved so that functionally it's similar to the other fighting game's 0-death combos that he attempted to avoid in the first place and thus creating a disparity between noobs and pros.
@@tiporosso I think the idea with the super high hitstun in 64 was so that you didn't have to be a pro to pull off combos. In 64, the difficulty doesn't come from stringing moves together, instead the difficulty comes from knowing how to most effectively push your punish game. Sakurai was a fan of KOF so I imagine he liked combos, he just wanted them to be more accessible for new players.
Leffen back in about 2011 you were competing in a random Australian local tournament and me and my friend saw you. To this day I've wondered what you were doing in the most remote Aussie town competing in a small local tournament?
No hate towards L-canceling (it feels pretty good to execute IMO and helps to get into a flow state) but it definitely seems unnecessary to me. “Mindless execution test” isn’t far off.
I played smash 64 for like 10 years before I found out about l cancels. Why they didn’t include it in the ‘how to play’ part of the opening, idk. As an avid fan of the game for many years it kinda pisses me off. Like how many people did they really expect to see it when they put it on that website?
Sakurai blatantly stated that he was "aware" that wavedashing was in Melee, but he didn't intend for it to be used the way it is today. m So in other words he just didn't think Melee players would take wavedashing as far as it did.
love the cheeky ending "quess you won't know how good the game was cuz its an old and outdated game... unless😏" Also, i believe i remember hearing about Sakurai explaining wavedashing in an old forum, AKA not a glitch.
i wish he talked about melee more .... why certain things ended up the way they did. di, traction, fall speed. adding more characters, why they made pichu so bad. why mew2 is so light. etc
Pichu was the standard Joke Character, which tend to be designed intentionally flawed and became a common thing in Fighting games with other characters like Dan or Roll. They even continued the trend with Ultimate introducing Piranha Plant.
Sales and marketing teams have no business making huge decisions about any game they've never played. Play the game and see how "bad" it is for yourself or step aside.
I love his reasoning behind combos. Smash is very freeform with "combos", other "traditional" fighting games are way more rigid and complex. Complexity can be good if done right, but hinder the game if done wrong. Its not really fun to go into training and practice combos and links honestly. Combos should be open-ended with some limiter while allowing the player to do them in many ways, like Smash does. The motions for certain moves can be fun to see matched on screen like the shoryuken, but training and memorizing specific link combos is certainly not. Smash is the best example of easy to learn hard to master for fighting games, sort of like how Counter-Strike has that title for FPS. There is enough learning skill and nuance for the skill ceiling to still be high despite not having these overly complex combos and mechanics.
Just think about how little time they took to make a game like Melee, vs Pokemon Scarlet and Violet today. Don't get me wrong, the Pokemon & world are cool, but it has so many glitches etc.
Not the same era, not the same team, not the same systems that they’re developing and vastly different genres. I can’t express enough how much work was put into the smash franchise but we can’t pretend like the Pokémon devs don’t try, they do the most that they can with dev crunch and a limited time
My biggest issue with L-cancelling is just my giant hands/long fingers being scrunched to hit the button over and over on a GC controller. I just wish the shoulder buttons/grip/ergonomics of GC controllers were a lot closer to today's controllers.
@@jmarq753 I tried, Sakurai said long combos ruin strategy and then I remember the whole limit joke. Then I combined the two at the same time while poking fun at Leffen 😎

The irony of smash 64 is that it has some of the most brutal combos of any smash game
Explain where the irony is please

Absolutely do a video on L cancelling. It's a really interesting topic/debate and everyone is either really bad at talking about it or uninformed
Wave dashing was acknowledged by Sakurai himself on the Melee DOJO!! website.

Other fighting games are cage matches, but sumo wrestling is the og platform fighter.
Wavedash isn't an accident. Sakuri posted this on some forum somewhere in like '02.
Mechanic was intended, nothing that came from it was

It would be cool to see you do an L-Canceling video. I personally love the mechanic but there’s been lots of discussion lately about it
I believe the Smash Dojo existed all the up until Brawl (own childhood memory), before being retired in favor of the regular website.
This man is still getting respected
