"The Sting" was the movie that convinced me to be an actor. Also, being a professional pianist, I was working at the UN Plaza Hotel in New York City when the actor, Jack Kehoe (The "Erie Kid" from the Sting) comes walking into the lounge. I started playing Joplin's "Solace" and he realized I recognized him, so he gave me that signal with his nose acknowledging that I recognized him. It was the highlight of my career!!!!
The Sting - one of those rare movies that you watch for the first time and you're totally "Whoa! I did not see this coming!" And then you love to re-watch it over and over again because now you DO see it coming - and you're SO looking forward to it!
One of those rare cosmic collisions of musical score .... musicians .... great actors .... story ... screen play .... director ..... never again in my lifetime anyway .... rag on !!!
I saw Hamlisch perform at the iconic Ohio Theater more than ten yrs ago. He was true to form; funny, talented, surprisingly self deprecating, and in praise of his peers. His arrangements of Joplin in the movie "The Sting," notably "The Entertainer," this one score I heard as a young man that I couldn't get out of my mind, and the one where Hamlisch won an oscar, was my quiet motivation to explore Joplin's music. Like Joplin, you left too soon. Thanks. And bless you Marvin.
I still get that " Sting Feeling " when I hear this . I was working nightshift and got up at noon to go downtown Edmonton too see this . I was one of 4 people in the theatre . I walked out higher than a kite believing that I HAD BEEN ENTERTAINED . IT WASN'T TILL i SAW IT A SECOND AND THIRD TIME BEFORE i GOT IT ALL . Everybody was doing the Thumbing The Nose thing like we were in on something special , and damnit .. WE WERE . I don't get the FEELING from a lot of movie music like I got from this movie .... and still GET Such Great Feel Good Music from such a Great Show ... still makes me smile and giggle like that afternoon I was one of 4 people seeing it's first showing . Gawd ... I love this show ... and of course the Music has a lot to do with it ?? RIGHHT???
Just watched the movie for the first time, as part of watching all movies that won Best Picture. Absolutely one of the greatest winners, and one of the best films I've ever seen. Excellent movie.
@@philliplohnes3675 The Sting will endure, the Exorcist has become lame with time....ya follow? I love The Sting, it is one of the most fun movies ever.
One of the all-time great movies. The actors, the storyline, the music, and the language. I had to look up what some of the terms meant. I never get tired of watching it.
CLASSIC HOLLYWOOD FILM.......THE STING.....I 1ST SAW IT AS A KID BACK IN 1978 & FILM THEME MUSIC.......SUPERB........KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK IN HOLLYWOOD..... THEY DO NOT MAKE FILMS LIKE THIS ANY MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We bury mom on Monday. This was the music she played on the Piano for years. We all learned to play on our own instruments as well. This Movie was her favorite.
Marvin Hamlisch couldn’t have done it without the help of Scott Joplin’s music. Many merry go rounds will play Scott Joplin’s music, the one in San Diego’s Balboa Park and Seaport Village as well as the ones at Knotts Berry Farm and 6 Flags Magic Mountain.
On this day in 1974 {August 28th} Marvin Hamlisch was a guest on the nationally syndicated weekday-afternoon television program, 'The Mike Douglas Show'... Three months earlier on May 12th, 1974 his "The Entertainer" peaked at #3 {for 2 weeks} on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart and it spent sixteen weeks on the chart... "The Entertainer" reached #1 {for 1 week} on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Tracks chart... Also in 1974 he won three Academy Awards; 'Best Original Song' for "The Way We Were" from the film of the same name, 'Best Dramatic Score' for 'The Way We Were', and 'Best Adaptation Score' for the film 'The Sting'... Marvin Frederick Hamlisch passed away at the age of 68 on August 6th, 2012... May he R.I.P.
Vielen Dank!
Great entertaining film with the genius of the great Paul Newman. Newman was so underrated in his comic ability. Great score of course, great costumes, great fun--like movies are supposed to be.
The Sting is one of those movies that you need to watch from beginning to end with no interruption.....because if you miss one little detail.....youve lost the movie!!!
I have seen the movie the Sting 8 times during 1974 & very early 1975 the year I met my late wife of 31 years in the Philippines. Today’s movies are garbage, so are the actors & actresses.
The movie that got me into the music of joplin. Irony here cuz my piano teacher was a black lady who made me appreciate Schumann. I igot her to explore Joplin. Joplin did amazing pieces like gladiolus rag, and a waltz titled bethena.
I agree, one of the great films and the soundtrack is excellent. I used to have the tape of the soundtrack to listen to in the car (when I had one) then lost it, re-brought it, lost it, brough it again and now don't have a tape player. Wonder if it's available now on CD? Will have to look around. I have a feeling this is just one side of the album as the whole thing is much longer than this I'm sure.
Bien.
It actually annoys me that Marvin Hamlisch also had adapted another Scott Joplin piece, "Cascades" for the scene when Lt Snyder is chasing Johny Hooker through the streets and the railroad station, but the song isn't included on the soundtrack. The Piano and Orchestral versions of The Entertainer and Solace would have been better off being combined so there are 2 longer pieces, instead of 4 separate shorter pieces.
It was the first soundtrack that used the different musical styles that Hamlish incorporated (most importantly, of course, Ragtime.) I also can't think of any other score that sounds even remotely like Hamlish's.
For some reason this Best Picture Oscar Winner is not talked about in the same way that the previous and following best picture winner are IMHO. It's a very well made period picture piece w great music, great story and iconic ending. 👏 The 2 stars should have made many more pictures together but IMHO got skittish about appearing together again bc the previous 2 pictures they stared together in were so well received. What a shame. Missed opportunity and a prime example of 2 people not giving the fans what they want. Shame.
Can anyone tell me if there is an extended version of the first one minute and twenty seconds of this post? It seems to me that I have heard a longer extended version of the slow intro part to this piece, maybe I'm wrong but I don't think so. I'd appreciate any help on the subject :))

It is truly one of the best movies ever made....certainly among the very best of the last 50 years! Great musical score makes it easy to watch!

+Lemon Drops So, have you seen Bridge on the River Kwai, Gandhi and Chariots of Fire?
pix046 Yup! All three are great, but Bridge on the River Kwai I (personally) awarded a perfect 5. The other two I gave 4's.
At the time I was ecstatic that the Exorcist lost and that the Sting won, and have not changed my opinion

This soundtrack cheers me up so much!! "The Sting" is GREAT movie!!

Definitively, one of the best films in the history of Cinema.
Still the best heist movie ever and still one of the most unusual and intriguing soundtracks.
Wonderful suite, Frederik!

The film that made Ragtime in vogue again!

Excelente, gracias por compartir esta Suite.
Good music from Hamlisch and Joplin with his ragtimes.
From Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid to The Sting...Newman and Redford were an unbeatable team!!!!!
I was stung by bee once my grandma put this album on. Loved it ever since
My favourite moovie. I got to see It a million of times!
They don't make movies like this anymore. If they did, I would go watch them. Top actors and top writing and top music. The Best!

Marvin Hamlisch. He left us a little young . . .

Beautiful - seeing this made me dig out the album and put it on my ipod. Glas you posted it !

Newman: Glad to meet you, kid. You're a real horse's ass.

I watched the movie after playing a bit of Bioshock Infinite, and was amazed how many songs were familiar, made the movie feel even better
Best movie ever :)
A masterpiece.
I’ve never seen the sting, but as I listen to this, I’m interested in the fact that the Scott Joplin movie from 1977 used the exact same soundtrack
You MUST watch it!
