    Ironically, Dunphy was about the only one in Ireland who responded positively to Charlton's appointment. Everyone else was bemoaning Bob Paisley narrowly failing to get appointed instead. I read his Irish Independent

    I came of age in Dublin in 1978 , there was no work , no hope ,nothing but the northern troubles and doom piled upon gloom .The only good thing that happened in Ireland when I was in my twenties was Jack and what he achieved with the lads at his disposal . Unfortunately Eamon could not overcome his initial setback with Jack and never had a good word to say about him or his achievements , Dunphy has his moments but the early 1980,s we not among them

    Fair play Eamon. I think its important that people remember how bad things were in Ireland before Jack became manager. He, amongst many others, gave us a pride in ourselves. And for that I say thanks Jack.

    Great analysis. Credit to Giles for distancing himself from Charlton when he was ROI manager. I think there's a few current day pundits who could follow that example.

      McCarthy never had any luck !
      Had one fxxxxx player challenged a corner against Macedonia to qualify for EC2000 Saipan wouldn’t have happened !

    John Stone on man City could have learnt from Jack getting rid of the ball in the box..

    I am surprised that Giles says that Bobby as a footballer didn't have a great knowledge of the game . From i have seen of him from matches online : Bobby looked like a mixture of gazza and scholes.

    Brian Labone Everton centre half was considered for the 1966 team. I believe his wife had a say in him not going to the world cup. 1970 saw Labone in Mexico. He was a clean skilful player. Far better than Jack.

      Brady was suspended for 4 games for the 88 euros. Only on appeal it was reduced to 2 games. There was only 20 places so it was pointless to pick him.

    Bob Paisley should have got the job. With the players Ireland had they could have won the Euros in 88. If you had someone managing them to their strengths the only team that was better in Europe was the Dutch.

    • @wbafc1231
      @wbafc1231 5 лет назад +1

      Harsh but there is a lot of truth in it. The Dutch were the only team to better them.

      It was the draw against u.s.s.r at the time that cost us dear and that was probably our best performance but we only drew, the defeat to Holland would not have mattered had we won!

      Not a hope. Every other squad was superior to us in the 88 euros. Jack did an incredible job and its a bit irish to claim that we could have won in 88.
