I have social anxiety and low self esteem cuz of it and it really hurt. Made me realize why no one talks to me it class tho. I don’t seem like the sweet quiet kid people like or infantilize.
When I smile with my mouth closed, the tips of my canines poke out between my lips, making me look like a vampire. Needless to say, it looks even more ridiculous when I smile with my mouth open. Heck even my RBF looks way better than my smile. Goddammit I hate myself
Oh God, I don't know how many times I heard that; 'don't be angry' or 'smile..the sun is shining' or 'oh boy she's always angry'. Give it a rest people, I'm smiling but not on demand!
I recently discovered that I've got RBF, and it was caused by my mouth having an angled-downward expression. All I do is engage the cheek muscles a little bit to pull the corners of my mouth upward to a neutral expression. I've also noticed that my mouth naturally angles upward on its own - with the cheek muscles engaged - when I'm in an especially good mood; my RBF only happens when I'm emotionally neutral. I've trained myself to angle the corners of my mouth upward regardless of whether or not I'm ecstatic. My confidence has since gone THROUGH THE ROOF! I've also noticed that responses from others are more positive toward me. Just a slight change in facial expression goes a long way...
I'm gettin surgery for this, because now I have to fake smile all the time and you're face muscle gets tired now my face is fatigue and stiff due to holding up a Lil smile so my cheeck area is very fatigue now.. I just wish ppl would leave me alone.
A lot of people with Asperger's have this problem and aren't aware of it and/or can't as easily control it because it can be more difficult for people to express emotions unless they are felt very strongly and genuinely. Those makeup tips sound helpful!
RBC can be quite useful in public transportations lol 😂 i live in Korea (am Korean) and no one bothers me one bit 🤣 while my friends repeatedly complain about some elder coming up to them and forcibly ask them to yield their seats lol I just give them a stare and it’s enough to keep them quiet lol
For Christmas? Somebody who obviously hates you. Basically the family member at the christmas party brings the elf on the shelf and brings evil into the house.
I have a problem of Resting Face, I have been neglected from people. because of this. I barley engage with friends. The problem is it a problem in school. I avoided from working in group discussion just to run from these questions. The truth is i am a very kind person.
I have this face alot people tend to be frighten of me or think I'm pissed which saddens me at times, but when people want to have a conversation I will gladly talk to them as kindly as can.
The moment I looked in the mirror, I was shocked by what I saw! It was like I would stare into a beast with its glooming eyes piercing my soul and its mouth was hanging so deep, as the sharp teeth pressed the lip down. Oh boy, never will I look in the mirror again!
Bro, even when I think I’m smiling, I’m not.. and my anxiety makes my lips dry, which causes RBF. I just got told by a friend when I said I was doing great that I always look fed up and he thought I was angry about something. :/
Yeah I got droopy eyes and mouth. The thing is, it not only makes me look upset. But it gives everyone and myself that energy that I'm upset. Ima just start slightly engaging my smile. It makes a world of difference. And it helps overall attitude as well.
Whenever I do talk to somebody, they always admit how before we did start talking (and I'm guessing realized i'm genuinely a nice person), they thought I didn't want to be spoken to Lmao the reaity of the matter is I'm always open to making new friends and despite being introverted like meeting people, but people tend not to approach me too much thinking I'm cold.
I’ve had several jobs and upon getting my reviews this always comes up “You need to smile more you look too serious.” Male coworker who’s much more serious looking doesn’t get any of that mentioned to him.
I've been told that, by my last two office managers. I broke down in tears in front of one manager. I'm so tired of the contempt and disrespect I get. I spend all day; at work; smiling at people just so I can keep from being fired. I am exhausted at the end of the day, from being a fake person.
@@teresaharris-travelbybooks5564 I hate sexist double standards for women in the workplace and everywhere else. I thought it was 2021 already, why is this still happening??
I have this. my mom just came to me telling me how she always feels like I'm mad at here because I'm always glaring at her... I don't actually hate her
I was in the military and currently in private security (as its euphemistically called)....rbf is an asset. My bosses love it. I would never try to work in a general people pleasing type of job. I work from my strengths. Bottle half full, bottle half empty - you choose.
Actually I raised my eyebrow arch, I'm a guy so I had those flat eyebrows that gave me my rbf but I plucked an arch in them and made them even, now they look so beautiful and I look nice and kind
it is also a common feature among autistic people, i have it and i noticed it when a lot of people told me that the first time we met they thought i was mean or hated everything, like i have a face that hates everything, Im as softie as a loaf of bread. That coasts me a lot of potential relationships cause people just assume i am a difficult person.
"who gives a sock!" Vanessa, I dooooo! I got fired twice from my management position in hospitality industry because of 'NOT SMILE ENOUGH' but thanks GOD that happened twice that situation force me to open my own Hotel, because I love people from different culture. OMG! now make sense!!!! Vanessa you are awesome :)
This i experienced this. i dont get fired but i just get less hours and until none and basically they just make excuses (this happen to more than one company). i think they feel bad if they say it directly. i have been trying to think. maybe this job dealing with people isnt my strong suits. i am more like behind the scence kinda person. i am so polite to them and clients, i think they dont have enogh reasons to fire me actually but i am not jojo siwa where i have to smile every minute and we i dont smile i have resting bitch face.
I found this concept by doing some research and it shows exactly what I've been thinking about my face lately. I have wondered why so many people find me unpleasant and have noticed that the corners of my mouth and eyes are downward.
At least three people say, ‘you look depressed.’ Even my teachers and parents get concerned and stop in the middle of lessons to ask if I’m alive lol. I kinda like being taken more seriously tho.. people don’t waste my time.
Super interesting video, I was wondering about my own resting face. RE: people who tell others to smile… guys, people might say “you should smile more” NOT because they’re a misogynist and hate women and like to look at pretty women as objects. They might say that because… having a natural smile makes you a MORE LIKABLE AND ATTRACTIVE PERSON, and that often translates into greater success and happiness. It’s akin to telling someone they have food on their face. It’s unbecoming to have food on your face, wouldn’t you want to know about it? Yes, people still use “smile honey” in misogynistic fashion, but I STILL thank my mother to this day for telling me to grow “smiling eyes.” I am very grateful that I look happy and smile a lot, it helps my personal and professional relationships.
so i was on a zoom call for school a few weeks ago and i have an rbf. my teacher then proceeded to call me out in front of the class for having an “attitude.” i was literally just sitting there not doing or saying anything and she got mad at me for it. i’ve had this same problem with other teachers too. it’s such a struggle to have an rbf :((
I've had RBF since I was a kid (before the term was coined, I imagine); teachers used to tell me to smile all the time and it got on my nerves...when I got older, I started retorting with "Why?" when they told me to do so and no one ever really had an answer. When I started working as an adult, same thing (I remember being on a video conference call and everyone was saying how angry I looked and I finally just said "this is just my face; can we get back to the meeting?")...and random men at grocery stores and on sidewalks always shout at me to smile...it's so annoying. People (once they get to know me) often tell me that they were intimidated by me and thought I was stuck up at first and were surprised by how down to earth I am. I don't mind people's perceptions of me though; I actually don't really like people in general so I like that my expression intimidates them so they won't bother me. This is my face and I don't like being told to change it. I'm not hurting anyone and it's not my job to make people feel warm and fuzzy around me. If you don't like it, don't look at me or approach me. It's simple (and I prefer it that way).
100% agree. My teachers used to say I was "dark" and asked if there were problems at home. It's just my face! Years later finally wrote a song about it haha ruclips.net/video/hk1RoFFiess/видео.html
People always think im sad or deppresed and that makes me actually sad... i hate when they ask me ,,why do you never smile'' or ,,why are you always so tired/annoyed/mad?''...like you know it hurts when someone says that.. and when I smile they say i look creepy....
Guy here after hearing "cheer up it might never happen" for the millionth time in public. Apparently I have had this condition for 38 years now. My mother used to tell me people would always come up to her and ask why I looked miserable as a kid or why do I walk around looking like I have the world on my shoulders. Not going to lie the older I get the more angry or miserable my facial features have gotten. There is an old saying "it is easier to smile than it is to frown" no, no, no, no, no!! I feel more relaxed looking like this and it actually drains energy smiling. It feels natural to walk around like this to me. Don't get me wrong I would love to look happy and it pisses me off when I do eventually smile to hear a remark "I thought he never smiled" or "that's the first time I have ever saw him smile" unfortunately I can't offer any advice apart from yes it sucks but let's face it (no pun intended) who the hell walks around with a big grin on their faces all the time anyway? They be sectioned in no time. Just be yourself and as David Goggins once said "F*** people!
I practiced a better "neutral" expression or expressions in the mirror by replacing my resting frown / rbf today with a bit of a relaxed/natural smile while I was sitting alone at a table working on my computer in a hallway at my college campus, and I was already approached by 5 nice strangers (to watch their stuff, to let me know an event was going on, random things) and this has never happened before. It works. I also tried while I'm sitting alone with my phone or computer screen, I'll turn my screen black and check my expression in the dark screen periodically. I've never been much of an "eyebrow talker" but I've found that if I engaged my eyebrows and more cheek/smile muscles in my facial expressions a bit when talking to people (practice having a mini conversation in the mirror, or watch a friendly RUclipsr's expressions when they're having a casual chat (like a grwm) and try to mimic their expressions while they're talking. Sometimes having a bit of a smile while talking helps a lot. As I was practicing smiling a bit (with teeth) while having an imaginary conversation alone with myself in the mirror of my school bathroom, I felt like maybe doing this more and getting used to different expressions can make me more confident and used to smiling with teeth and more comfortable with the way I look when talking. I've always had a bit of anxiety with how I look while interacting with other people, being very shy/introverted with smiling and talking to new people (although I LOVE meeting new people and when super nice people approach me!), and generally smiling with my teeth because I always felt excessively juvenile when smiling with teeth, but I'm sure acceptance leads to greater confidence in your looks. Smiling more throughout the day while being by myself also betters my mood and makes me more open to social interaction and generally more open to other possibilities. Hacking your "neutral" expressions while sitting alone or while talking to others can make you give off a different vibe entirely and lead to different outcomes! I'll keep working on this and maybe comment here again if I find any new tricks that work for me or if I find much better success with people. One day I aspire to have even 10% of Emilia Clarke's IMMEDIATE lovability and expressiveness lol! :) Good luck y'all!
I always get comments like ‘cheer up’ and ‘smile girl’ - it makes me paranoid as I may seem unapproachable so I consciously have to smile and it seems fake. So now I have anxiety about my expression as new people always comment and I hate that as a first impression. I’m so paranoid about it
I often don't even realise how angry my face looks until i see photos or videos of myself. I sure look intimidating and unapproachable but it's not like i can just change how i look. I know people have said mean things behind my back and even right to my face but idgaf i just let them say whatever they want
I have suffered from this all my life, not only cant smile, but I blush very easily, it has caused me so much pain in life to be like this,my social life is non existent, my depression has deepened and my life has gone too hell,I dont like myself anymore and people do not like me either.
I have the opposite problem. I smile too much, I mean literally I'm always smiling (and I do mean literally always) and always have so my face kind of stayed that way and a smile became my "neutral" expression. While I love spreading happiness to people (and I am mostly a happy person), there are definite drawbacks.
I've had both problems. I think I wanted to change the perception of people about me, so I started smiling a lot and couldn't help but notice I acquired less new friends and did not get closer to people who met my extreme smiling self. I started to smile when I was nervous too. I realised I had more genuine relationships and people took me seriously with RBF... Smiling too much and you can see them thinking you're a pushover or being unnerved by your smile. I'm learning to go back now, because the smile had become an automatic reaction.
@@daisiesandpandas1218 For me, it'd be nearly impossible to stop since I've been smiling constantly my whole life, and it's actually physically uncomfortable to keep my mouth closed for more than a minute.. Did you have the drawbacks that I do? A big one is that I noticed I have a lot more saliva than most people have. I'll admit that's something I'm slightly insecure about. And when I'm sad and crying or the rare times I get mad, it sends mixed messages. People don't know what I mean when I say "sometimes I'm not really smiling when I'm smiling" (even though usually I am).
Can relate :') my eyes looks angry at neutral n i always have to put an effort of opening it wider a little to look neutral but im tired of doing it every time
my rbf started in 6th grade when I was going through trauma and bad anxiety and I found that out by people ALWAYS POINTING IT OUT THANKS 🥲 my family relatives literally hate me just cus of how I look
It’s so annoying when I’m in a calm or neutral mood and my mum forces me to smile, like I dont want to fake my emotions :/. A lot of the time I’ll be in a good mood but people think I look upset or unapproachable ahhhh
Having a resting friendly face can be a hindrance too. I have a resting face that looks upbeat, which of course isn't always the case. That said, it must be harder to deal with if you have a face that looks moody when you're not. People telling you to cheer up would be infuriating.
I hate being told I should smile more by, guess who, people who should also smile more themselves. They don't like my resting face but they fail to notice their own moody resting faces that smile about 10% as often as I actively do.
I've been hearing • Are you angry? • Is something wrong? • Did I say something to offend you? • Why don’t you smile more? for years but those questions no longer define me and how people look at sines before they can ask those questions i tell them that my face natcherly looks made but isn't mad at all.
Have an RBF and since I was a kid, I figured out that people love person who has a bright aura and smiles more. I did and it's very tiring and draining. People kept on asking why am I mad or annoyed even I am not. As I got older, I dont care anymore.
I honestly have this problem so much that even my friends have stopped talking to me because they thought I was always in a bitchy mood so they thought they would be better off without me but it is legit just my face and I can't control it :(
I’m a guy. I realized I began to psychologically take on the emotion of “mean guy” because everyone assumed I was always in a mean mood. It’s very annoying and sad people make assumptions before speaking to me, or approaching me in a correct manner first to then see what I’m like in that moment. Give people a chance....! Or be the one to make them smile!! The thing is, everyone has a guard up. No one wants to pour too much out in fear of rejection. I get this isn’t everyone but it’s majority of the human race.

It’s so hard to make friends because people think you’re mean😢
So true I'm discovered the same thing it's called growing and understanding life and looking at things a different way to get a different result
I’ve started doing this lately, and use it when I have to, it actually works
I'm gettin surgery for this, because now I have to fake smile all the time and you're face muscle gets tired now my face is fatigue and stiff due to holding up a Lil smile so my cheeck area is very fatigue now.. I just wish ppl would leave me alone.
A lot of people with Asperger's have this problem and aren't aware of it and/or can't as easily control it because it can be more difficult for people to express emotions unless they are felt very strongly and genuinely. Those makeup tips sound helpful!
Or because of weak eyebrow muscles
True, i have aspergers and RBF
RBC can be quite useful in public transportations lol 😂 i live in Korea (am Korean) and no one bothers me one bit 🤣 while my friends repeatedly complain about some elder coming up to them and forcibly ask them to yield their seats lol I just give them a stare and it’s enough to keep them quiet lol

4). Exactly because we aren’t frowning, we are resting. I’m actually happy most of the time.
I knew she was going to mention Kristen Stewart when she said "celebrities like...", hahaha.
Andrea M nope.
The moment I looked in the mirror, I was shocked by what I saw! It was like I would stare into a beast with its glooming eyes piercing my soul and its mouth was hanging so deep, as the sharp teeth pressed the lip down. Oh boy, never will I look in the mirror again!
write horror books, please

Bruv, are you a writer? Because you sound like one
The thought of sitting around with a dorky smile on my face gives me anxiety. So now, I'm not sad or angry, I'm just a total psycho. Nice!
just pair the slight smile with a death stare and you're set
Bro, even when I think I’m smiling, I’m not.. and my anxiety makes my lips dry, which causes RBF. I just got told by a friend when I said I was doing great that I always look fed up and he thought I was angry about something. :/
Never knew anxiety could cause dry lips... that makes a lot of sense now 😂
Yeah I got droopy eyes and mouth.
The thing is, it not only makes me look upset. But it gives everyone and myself that energy that I'm upset.
Ima just start slightly engaging my smile. It makes a world of difference. And it helps overall attitude as well.
i have had girls tell me they liked me,but they were scared to talk to me cuz of rbf.
"You look tired"
"Are you okay?"
"Why are you looking at me like that?"
"You look kinda sick"
"Are you high?"
Omg shut up please.
Omg were on the same boat

I look so angry all the time , people think I am arrogant cuz I just zone out sometimes and my face gets in the mood
Whenever I do talk to somebody, they always admit how before we did start talking (and I'm guessing realized i'm genuinely a nice person), they thought I didn't want to be spoken to
Lmao the reaity of the matter is I'm always open to making new friends and despite being introverted like meeting people, but people tend not to approach me too much thinking I'm cold.

Thank you!! 🙏 This is so impolite to tell someone to smile if you barely know a person!
I remember in 6th grade when a teacher asked “What happened? Are you okay? Why are you sad all the time?” I was just resting my face 😪
my teacher did the same to me when i was in senior high school.
I have a RBF and I hate it😔
I have resting sad face🙁
I hear this all the time! So annoying.. When people say this.. It is telling me.. They think they look much better.... Really?
I have this. my mom just came to me telling me how she always feels like I'm mad at here because I'm always glaring at her... I don't actually hate her
So many people ask me if I'm depressed when I'm actually trying to look happy
RBF isn't all bad. I use it in the morning to keep my wife from interrupting my reading of the paper.
I smile allll the time because people say I look angry when I’m serious 😩
I was in the military and currently in private security (as its euphemistically called)....rbf is an asset.
My bosses love it. I would never try to work in a general people pleasing type of job. I work from my strengths.
Bottle half full, bottle half empty - you choose.
I am sick and tired of people asking me and telling me "Are you ok?", "You look like your crying", "Don't look so mad".
I feel like I got my downcast features from when I was younger and bullied and now I guess that's just how my face formed
Same, i always have a sad face and ppl always say that I move very slow, like a sloth
@@viknit5786 do you feel down sometimes?
@@See_through866 no trying to be rude, but it’s human nature to feel down sometimes
tbh, all i did to get rid of rbf was to just slightly raise my eyebrows some & let it stay that way. like it sounds weird, but it actually works.
Sure? For real
Lmfaooo I thought I'm the only one who did that
Actually I raised my eyebrow arch, I'm a guy so I had those flat eyebrows that gave me my rbf but I plucked an arch in them and made them even, now they look so beautiful and I look nice and kind
Well thats gonna cause some wrinkles
It's not weird it works but it's exhausting doing it for 50 years. I'm tired.
it is also a common feature among autistic people, i have it and i noticed it when a lot of people told me that the first time we met they thought i was mean or hated everything, like i have a face that hates everything, Im as softie as a loaf of bread.
Starting your own business is a good solution to the problems people at work have with your rbf.
I relate to this a lot, I’m going into high school soon and have trouble making friends especially with an RBF
I'm a dude and my rbf has scared people before when, in reality, I'm just a teddy bear
Best reply for when someone tells you to smile is "say something funny"
I’m so paranoid about it
Me: *_smiling_*
Others: why don't you ever smile?!
100% THIS!
Thank you so much, for such a long time, people keep asking me what's wrong, tell me to cheer up, now i understand why, thank you.
I often don't even realise how angry my face looks until i see photos or videos of myself. I sure look intimidating and unapproachable but it's not like i can just change how i look. I know people have said mean things behind my back and even right to my face but idgaf i just let them say whatever they want
Conversely, just because someone looks kind and happy, doesn't mean you shouldn't look out for them!!! I'd like to see a video on that too.
I'm a guy with RBF. I get so tired of people asking if I'm OK.
Wtf do people expect from other people.
I have suffered from this all my life, not only cant smile, but I blush very easily, it has caused me so much pain in life to be like this,my social life is non existent, my depression has deepened and my life has gone too hell,I dont like myself anymore and people do not like me either.
It literally hurts to smile for too long. I can’t help it 🤣
serious case of RBF here, but I am capable of smiling. Great channel and advice!
I have the opposite problem. I smile too much, I mean literally I'm always smiling (and I do mean literally always) and always have so my face kind of stayed that way and a smile became my "neutral" expression. While I love spreading happiness to people (and I am mostly a happy person), there are definite drawbacks.
Oh geez cry about it
I've had both problems.
Not at all! We all love smily people. They come across as very warm and friendly and have lots of friends
i have resting happy and inviting face and im a bitch :(
lol!
Rocio. I have an RBF face and people clearly see that. Feel like I have no reason to smile.

It’s so annoying when I’m in a calm or neutral mood and my mum forces me to smile, like I dont want to fake my emotions :/. A lot of the time I’ll be in a good mood but people think I look upset or unapproachable ahhhh
I have a co-worker that definitely has RBF but she does simile and has great sense of humor
Having a resting friendly face can be a hindrance too. I have a resting face that looks upbeat, which of course isn't always the case. That said, it must be harder to deal with if you have a face that looks moody when you're not. People telling you to cheer up would be infuriating.
I wish I had your fave
*"I ain't gon' smile if I don't want to Hey, man, we all can't be like you"* 🎵🎶
I have the resting " i cant stand my life anymore should i end it " face
I hate being told I should smile more by, guess who, people who should also smile more themselves. They don't like my resting face but they fail to notice their own moody resting faces that smile about 10% as often as I actively do.
I feel fine... Until someone tells me I look angry, tired, bored, sad or tells me to smile. Then I AM pissed.
I've been hearing • Are you angry? • Is something wrong? • Did I say something to offend you? • Why don’t you smile more? for years but those questions no longer define me and how people look at sines before they can ask those questions i tell them that my face natcherly looks made but isn't mad at all.
I could be the happiest person in the world and I would still look like someone killed my dog
It makes me comfortable to read the comments cuz I'm not alone in this universe...😌😌😌
i feel like when i own my rbf it just gets more intense lol
