I’m so bummed because I’ve wanted this for so long, and it’s in my top 5 albums of the year. This thing is amazing, please don’t just take Anthony’s word for this one. I love this, especially Capgras!!
This and his Ethel Cain review feel like I’m not listening to the same album. I hope people still check this out because it’s a genuinely fucking fantastic post punk and no wave album and a breath of fresh air in an already clogged genre.
Fantano's hate of Gilla Band is just weird, he loves all things noise but for some reason GB doesn't click. A sad truth, but oh well, at least people might listen to this more now and realize they like this a whole lot more than Fantano does.
I genuinely can’t remember the last time Fantano gave an Irish band a good review tbh. Your man is a hater. Gilla Band are, hands down, the most innovative and influential active band in Ireland and Britain, Europe, even the World. They’re on another level and Fantano will end up looking like Pitchfork did with Daft Punk. Mark my words.
@@harrypmay thems some bold claims… they’re pretty great, definitely up there in my favs of the many great UK/Irish bands rn… but.. MOST influential, hands down? I’m not so sure about that one, govna.
Rare Anthony L here, I agree that towards the end there are some moments that don't quite have the quality that the first half of the album does but I think the main thing he's missed here is the clever, bizarre lyrics that are throughout the album, whilst Post Ryan's finish is pretty much perfect imo
You’ve gotta be kidding me. I fucked with this band’s first EP heavy but THIS? This is textbook no-wave, dude. So much better has come from this genre.
One of my favs of the year and probably my favourite of theirs. Not only the amazing noise but also the surprisingly memorable songwriting all throughout are here in spades. Also “The Weirds” is my favourite track on here. It manages to display some emotional tension, instead of their manic cynical bitter style, which hits soooo hard
Imo, this is one of the best noise albums of the year. The vocals are so wild and so nihilistic, the drums are super tight and textured, and the soundscapes are pure madness

Just gave the album a listen before watching the review and I’m really glad I checked it out. Really cool noisy production, with some cryptic kinda sarcastic sounding lyrics. Really just works for me. The intro on “The Wierds” is just spellbinding. Sad you didn’t like the album more.
When this came out, I listened to it three times straight in a row. I view their album Holding Hands With Jaime as a 10/10, so I am definitely a shill. But this band just scratches that itch that no one else does. This album especially
Oh hell yes Anthony finally reviewed this record! I can't wait to see what score he's gonna give them, I bet since it took him so long to digest the record he gave it a really high score!
They could write endings but they choose not to and that’s part of it. They’re an incredible band. Especially live. I feel lucky they’re writing songs and capturing something that only they seem to be able to capture.
I'm stoked you reviewed my favorite album and appreciate your thoughts. I thought "I Was Away" was a no-wave banger and I loved "Almost Soon", which does have a sonically fun and satisfying finish in my opinion. "Pratfall" I took to be a lead in to "Post-Ryan" which, for me at least, mounts the energy leading into the last track. Once again, glad you reviewed this album and Im looking forward to whatever they do next.
I'm happy you finally talked about this even if your opinion of them is less than stellar. In the time between the release of Backwash and this review they became basically one of my favorite bands. Their music has a lot of subtle thematic elements I really like. Yeah they're not super noisy but they're definitely uniquely "modern" for me
Gilla Band are in a weird place for me where Eight Fivers, Backwash and fan favourite Why They Hide Their Bodies Under My Garage landed high in my Spotify Wrapped, but their albums just never hit for me. They always have these gems of songs surrounded by others that just don’t have the same spark, or in the case of this album sonic experimentations that come off more annoying than listenable. Also no mention of The Gum? That’s a banger right there
Yeah they're an odd band for me in that in that each album has maybe an EPs worth of incredible material, and then the rest just feels like the scraps that were left on the cutting room floor turned into an omelette.
i think i can speak on behalf of the majority here that this is also one o my favourite albums ever. the atmosphere and vibe of each track fits so well and although there are a few issues with song structure and track listing, they really made a great album tht flows perfectly and creatively throught the whole project
Been looking forward to this review! This album made it into my top 5 of the year. So powerful and I find it quite innovative. Thanks for sharing your thoughts Melon!
sad to see such a low rating, but happy that the album is getting this mainstream recognition. props to you fantano for highlighting fringe and experimental music!
This album is good, sorta agree the first half is stronger but seems I enjoy the second half more than you. Really excited to see these guys in a couple months!
This review is fascinating to me, i agree with most of what’s being said but just… like the album more I guess. Props to tony for this one, this album’s one of my AOTY
Melon, you can't just run around in a circle on time lapse for 6 minutes while voicing over with a recording of you reading off a list of racial slurs was not an appropriate nor reasonable way to review this album.
this is why I don’t watch anthony’s reviews anymore. He always seems to underappreciate the best stuff from my own subjective sensibilities… On an objective level we just have very different taste. I Was Away is my favorite song of this year.
Yeah I mostly gotta agree with the Melon boi on this one, althought I don't think all the criticisms given here are fair, the first Half of the record is literally perfect and there was no mention of "The Gum" which is easily one of the best tracks on this thing and a VERY strong opener. Second half was definitely underwhelming tho, I wouldn't mind the interludes or the quietter moments that much if there was any payoff at all but the record just kind of... ends. Overall I feel like Gilla Band created a lot of fantastic tracks for this album, some of the best in the genre I might say, and the effort to wrap it all up in a nice package is definitely here but the results are, unfortunately, a bit mixed.
This album's tight. Not the noisiest sounds in noise rock but some of the more interesting in my opinion. I liked 'The Talkies' more but that's a high bar
"Weird beat and rhythm combo on I was away" .... Dude are you mental? Those things were the best part of it. Paired with the distorted guitar right in the beginning and the distorted vocals in the end that was an intense track.. Also, Girl Band, while being visceral in sound, get very abstract in their lyrics sometimes. They are not right out full force on all their tracks. Post Ryan is a perfect example for this with "overdosing chewing gums", "-How is yourself? -Look it up.." "living in a tent for attention". It's weird to compare this trait to something like Tool, but in this manner they scratch the same itch for me personally. Then of course something like "The Gum" exists, which, you absolute madlad, didn't even give credit.. You get right sucked into the album and are left contemplating in the end... how is this "meh"? On another note, somebody gotta do an American Psycho music video with Red Polo Neck. Patrick rips off his mask in the bathroom to "wearing a big massive face, a big fuck off face".
