You can look it up and source me. We would not have IDLES or Fontaines DC without this band, they literally formed because their minds were blown from hearing Gilla Band (formerly known as Girl Band) for the first time.
I discovered them like ten years ago when Thom Yorke was on BBC and said this band was his favorite thing that him and his son listen to.
It’s like Liars on ketamine.
Is that true about Idles and FDC? Not digging, just curious. That’s great to know.
@@ASKpqIf I remember correctly, Too Real off Fontaines' first album was directly inspired by Gilla Band.

IDLES formed 2 years earlier than Gilla Band.
The fact that this band is resonating so intensely with some people while others just don't get it, is proof to me of their greatness.

You gotta do your own thing to be great, steer clear of genres and trends, this behavior definitely goes over most people’s heads. They are the real deal
I can't listen to this band while doing anything else, their sound takes all my attention. Tried to clean my house to Most Normal and got NOTHING done.
@@antin_ovel they do require attention. It comes across as very simple and direct, but there is tons of stuff going on under it. Simple and direct is a very good thing in my lexicon
The thing that makes their music entertaining for me is just the raw energy and charisma of the singer. It's something really raw and hard to pinpoint, but I rarely find artists who so clearly make something that it feels like only they could make and showcases their unique voice and quirks in terms of both musical and lyrical writing.
I'm not saying that's like the only quality I like about their music or that other artists don't have personalities, but artists like Billy Woods, Carly Rae Jepsen, BCNR, Mitski and Andrew WK as well as Gilla Band just have this aura that's hypnotically *them*.
I don't know many other bands who would've made Shoulderblades, is what I'm saying.
Come full circle. I can remember hearing Pears for Lunch from these guys on KEXP at SXSW 8 years ago and it absolutely blowing my mind. A lot has happened in those eight years, I’ve changed as a person, the world has changed but the awe this band inspires in me is still there.

Well, that is a sound which is new to me. A rare thing to come across. I will be listening again.
I've pretty much the same story as Troy. Finally saw these lads a few months back in Vancouver. Wrote the band a letter, 37 yr old man writing his first fan letter, gave it to Dara, he gave me a hug, I wished him well for the remainder of the tour. In another universe Gilla has changed the course of music and everyone from Beyonce to The Strokes, Hans Zimmer to Rick Rubin is rippin' them. In this universe they are merely the best group on the planet. I firmly believe this, and if you know, then I'll bet you do too.

Because their guitar player reminds me of a Christopher Nolan Hans Zimmer score, and I mean that in the best way possible.
I feel like he’s a game changer the same way Rowland S Howard of Birthday Party or Kevin Shields of MBV was, in that the guitar becomes more noise and texture than melody.
Alan is indeed a game changer. Couldn't agree more friend. I love chaps that push it, (Graham Coxon, Shields, Harry Nilsson) precisely why I love the Gilla's so much. They all push. All geniuses. Daniels engineering is mind boggling, Dara omitting pronouns (wtf has anyone ever even done that??) and personally I feel Adam is a hero. Ringo approach in THIS band, what the hell. Nobody has done Ringo since Ringo. I hate when people say there are no new avenues to traverse, there is and there are four guys doing it and they are all in the same group. "Originality isn't dead, YOU are." I say.
I'll never understand when some folks say there is no good music anymore. It's definitely out there, you just have to go find it. And I'm so happy I found this band.
Unfortunately, mainstream medias don't play this, and the majority of people is not ready and educated enough musically to enjoy the richness and the intensity of their music. That's a music for diggin' freaks like us :)
@@francoisjoly7696 I know what you mean, and I don't mean to argue. But the fact that this is the SECOND time on kexp is a big deal. I wouldn't consider kexp "mainstream" but I would consider them highly influential. At this point in time in culture and Internet, there's not a huge difference between that and whatever "mainstream" is.
...even more mainstream would be when a Grammy nominated band mentions them. And that's how I found them. When IDLES recommended them.
Despite whatever we consider mainstream, the fact is that the music landscape right now just has the space for this now. The scene has changed.
You must see these guys live.

@@rupman27isback Haha, I'll let you off, see from your comment further down that you don't like Idles. Having seen Idles over 100 times, obviously I do. We obviously differ on what our eardrums like, give me that noisy noise, you enjoy your more melodic Red Hot Chili Peppers and lets both be happy = smiley face.
@@snortlynorts5291 Yeah, I'm just not a fan of the noise style of music. It honestly makes me laugh.. Especially Idles.. their hilarious live.. I seen some live videos on em..But for me.. I love music with some kind of melody. Also, besides Peppers.. Led Zeppelin are my favorite band of all time. But glad you enjoy it.

i love gilla band, and now seeing them playing live it's so mesmerizing how all those frightening sounds come to life. The drum set, the bass and guitar techniques, the lyrics. It's all so inspiring and beautifull in the most no-wave, noise-rock way posible.
