In general never Cut and Paste files it can go wrong... Better Copy/Paste and then Delete from where u took them...

I want to move directories and their contents to another directory. Is there a setting to allow me to shift or control select directories?

It will only allow you to select one Directory \ Folder at a time, I guess to prevent any errors if you made a mistake

Hey, does anyone know how to get it to stop doing this? It's really annoying.

I've worked on hundreds of Windows PC's and Laptops and always been able to do this, how very odd, are you sure you are keeping the [Ctrl] key pressed down permanently?

I think for it to work you have to open the file explorer itself and not be launched from another app. I was trying to upload some files to the cloud and it was being launched by chrome and I didn't click on the app to open it. This was my problem.

Make sure in your file explorer options, you de-select the "Use check box to select items." It seems you either use check box to select, or use Control or Shift to select. So, if you need to select a large number of files, the latter option is better.
