One thing I've learned over the years is that when you can finally SEE the rot on a deck, its already too late. On the bright side, we get a house rescue/deck building series now! You're incredible Michelle, keep up the great work!
What an outstanding partner you are. Besides the the normal living together, but also somebody who can take charge and get things done no matter what Steve is so lucky to have you in his life. What a beautiful relationship.
I have recently had the privilege of witnessing your remarkable journey in building your cabin and your trip to Japan. You and Steve demonstrate a profound resourcefulness and ingenuity in addressing a wide array of technically challenging issues. Your unwavering composure in the face of complexity, whether on the boat or in the midst of reconstructing part of your property, is truly admirable. You both possess the rare ability to thoughtfully consider how a problem can be solved and then tenaciously work towards that solution, no matter the arduousness of the task. The synergy you exhibit, whether working as a team or as individuals, is nothing short of inspirational. Watching your endeavors is a testament to the power of determination and collaboration.
The only constant is change, and life is a never ending adventure. Some adventures are good, some, not so much! But you always amaze me with your tenacity and upbeat approach to things. ❤❤
We used to boil the blocked grease nipples, as they are called in the UK. In a tin can. Just test them before refitting. Great vids Michy. Sometimes you can use one nipple to grease them all then put the old ones back until you get some replacements.
What a mess . I've replaced alot of bad work and rot over the years . I'd recommend replacing all of it while you're doing this or you'll be chasing rot later . If they did it wrong on that part they did the same on the rounded part . Stay safe working . BTW those chips are the bomb .... also use treated lumber where you can and joist tape under decking
You're lucky that you caught it when you did! I've seen similar decks (improperly installed as well) totally calapse! So it's great that you avoided such a catastrophe. I got a kick out of your expression as you popped the beverage can! Priceless!
Just think though Mich, to a normal person this would have been an expensive disaster. In fact they probably would only have noticed something was up once somebody had got hurt by a collapse. For you, it’s a pain in the ass but you can fix it and fix it better than it was before. You’re an amazing and resourceful woman. Hats off to you. Well done x😊
My sentiments exactly. Sometimes, the universe creates an event that forces us to redirect our attention. It makes us look deeper when and where we are not looking at all. Problems like these are blessings in disguise. 😊
Oh, mY!!! You had your hands full with the animals!! Not to make light of the issue; you're going to have plenty of firewood. Good grief, what a horrendous amount of work!! 😲 Bless your heart...😘
Now this is a really interestingly different video than your normal postings and sort of like a mystery novel as you expose the next event to describe. Looking forward to your creative endeavors.
Can you put Snow guards on top of your metal roof. With electrical ice melts. Snow guards can hold the snow up on the roof and allow the sun to melt it off.
Always fun to see the dogs in the videos. Why does Clyde have such a different dog dish? Never seen one like that before. And the discovery of the condition of your deck. What a nightmare that had to be. That goofy off-key music you were playing while Steve was working on setting that deck post cracked me up. 😅 Looking forward to next week's video.
I understand completely. I have dealt with wooden deck problems for many years. So I finally went to other materials that are much more resistant to water damage.
Sorry for the fire, but glad you discovered the rot underneath the deck and the part joining into the house. Much respect for juggling pets, all those to dos, construction, and everything else you keep moving forward on. Would you ever consider a video on how you transformed into a superhero with such massive time management skills? Best wishes to your husband making a full recovery from the back surgery. My previous L4 and L5 herniations grok a little bit of his pain, but I was extremely fortunate and didn't have the stenosis diagnosis and back surgery. I wish you both much luck and continued success.
Welcome to the world of a remodeling or handyman contractor. Im a licensed remodeling contractor in Northern AZ, and I run into this stuff on a daily basis. And we have a much dryer climate per se than you do. Most of our moisture occurs in the winter months in the form of snow. But it never ceases to amaze me, how often I run into a scenario like yours. I feel for you guys, I really do. Its so heart breaking (and bank breaking) for a homeowner, when they see this unexpected damage. Especially to log and timber type homes. We see these huge pieces of wood on our homes, and assume they are doing just fine. Until you start a project like this. Well, Michelle and Steve, I sincerely hope this scenario doesnt hit you too hard. The sad fact is, that it is what it is, and it has to be dealt with. Make sure the repairs are being done correctly and properly, and soon you will be able to go on with your adventurous lives, and put this behind you!
I wish I was helping you out with your deck hun wouldn't even charge you nothing it would be fun sorry about all the rot your running in to I just retired from my job of construction 46 years of building homes and such hoping you the best on your deck Michy.
You're right Michelle this is a little exciting !! What yal are running into all that rotten wood it comes from people not taken pride in their trade & building it lile it was there own home ! But it makes for a lot of good interesting videos that for sure .yal stay safe. Daniel from central Mississippi
Sending prayers for you and Steve and the puppies, I'm so sorry and sad that you had a fire never less gosh , thank goodness that everyone was not hurt , question did you have homeowners insurance, that might help if you do, do to the fires in Canada, hear in the US we carry homeowners insurance because of fires , God bless you all , Bryan , ❤
Hi Michelle. Too bad about the deck. Seems like you are handling it like the trooper you are. Your amazing in so many ways. I know you and the deck will come out of this on top. I have faith in you. Great seeing the hound gang. Michelle your are one gorgous lady head to toe no matter what your up too. Steve is one lucky man. Until the next video. Stay safe and happy. ❤
Oh my God Michele! What a mess! Sorry you have to deal with this mostly on your own. Have confidence you’ll take care of it your usual through way. Looking forward to the next installment with more sawmill action. Nice to see the pack is in good hands as always. Take care and stay safe lady! P.S. Be careful of the post on the car jack. Easy to slip out on accident!
Wow....!! Big project. Actually that fire was a good thing, since it eventually made you aware of the extent of water damage that was being done to the house. Knowing how you give so much though to that I'm sure you will resolve those issues in your normally excellent way. So, you have plenty to keep you unexpectedly busy for most of this summer.
Have been in my home 40 years and over the last 10 things have started showing up periodically that need work. I'm 70 and just last year resealed and painting the outside. Don't know many guys that would not hire a crew an just dive in like your are doing. While your able and have the will power just keep going. You are doing a great job taking care of the dogs and house and home.
WOW! My 8yr old Nephew said, Michelle has GUNS! LOVE Clyde 🥰🥰🥰 When it comes to Decks, I have done a few, can of worms at times. Use some Thomas Water Sealer or others to protect from wood rot. Your wood deck Michelle, that is bad 😥. Good LUCK, Work Smart & Safe! 🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀
We all know how projects can turn into major ones when things weren't done correctly the first time 😮 Thank you for sharing another awesome with your project 😊 You have quite the crew of dogs there L o l
What is there to say...... your an inspiration! You work so hard Michelle. You'll have plenty of content for the next month. Perhaps we'll see a lot more of Steve in the deck rebuild. Regarding a possible future railing for the cabin on the cliff. What about installing something with a nautical theme. Perhaps a rope or cable safety railing system. Thank you for all that you do Michelle. ☮️ on 🌎 p.s. I missed your little ❤️/Michelle emoji in the comments of your last video 😥. It's all good. I guess I'll live...😉
Steve is a smart dude. Picked the perfect partner and perfect time to visit Japan! Look at it this way: you got a whole chapter of material to entertain us on RUclips! They need a double thumbs up!
Thanks for showing the mosquito aftermath 😂 nice to see the dogs! even if some are leaving soon it's nevertheless an adorable sight... Regarding the deck: now you see why i always tell you to take care of your water management ! nothing more deadly for wood than water ! looking forward to the continuation !
There’s two types of contractors in the world 1st type - don’t care if it’s on the print or not just want to get done and paid 2nd type- treat the home as they were building it for their parents- follow best building practices regardless of time or expense and converse with homeowners regarding potential problems
Oh my goodness woman that's a lot of work but at least you will know how it built and you will know that you did it right😂❤ and you will feel safer thank goodness for that little fire😂 thank you for bringing us the video love to see your family and Clyde is such a teddy bear be safe and see you on the next one😂😂🎉😅😮❤
Blimey what a nightmare can of worms. Carpenter & Joiner for 37yrs here in the UK but we don't get the sort of extreme weather your buildings have to endure. Personally having seen just how advanced all the rot is on the stuff you have already ripped out I honestly wouldn't trust the rest of the timbers even if the look superficially OK on the outside. That is some extreme internal rot & wet & also that no flashing issues as you already probably know will be as severe on the decking you was hoping to salvage. Could this turn into a warranty issue with the original log house company 🤔 In a twisted way the deck fire could have saved you from a much more extreme accident of the decking actually collapsing at some point, so not sure if thats some sort of twisted positive. Glad you're going to vlog this though.
... OMG ... That meal time was amazing ,, the dogs were so in tune with your direction .. made me get the " feels' for your care and love for your dogs , and their buddies ... Michy , You are the best ....
It's all okay in how you handle yourself. WE already know your this wonderful beautiful lady with a very strong and kind heart. The knowledge pours out of you to figure things out. Improvise the moment and your doing all of this very well. I love your strength and strong attitude in you. You are Awesome! I'm grateful you decided to attack this event first of all for the betterment and safety of your home. Working your other cabin projects can be put on hold for awhile. You are doing this the correct way, which is immediately. Having another emergency escape route is also very smart. Build the deck strong and durable. Please stay safe and prayers for your safety. Big Hugs from Santa Barbara. 🤗😘🙏😎💕🍷🌹👏
What a nightmare, I know exactly what is happening. I just spent a month repairing rot. Not a fun job but nessesary to save what you can .good luck with the repair and be safe.
Good video can’t wait for part two. I had to rebuild my deck that lasted 26 years so can’t complain. I used cedar posts and pressure treated lumber and composite deck and a lot of waterproofing tape. Lots of new deck hardware options now. Good luck. Hope your friends had a good party on your deck!😂
Sometimes when you take them off like that, you got a straight pointed t** Tip that you can buy for the air gun and you can stick it in with a ball. Joint is where you pump the grease in and blow it out. And it'll work the next time
So sorry for you and Steve Michelle for your deck, another great video though thank you for sharing your daily routines with us. Anyway, have a wonderful day and a beautiful week.
I woke up rested this morning, and watched your video. Now, I am exhausted again. Holy Smokes! I really admire your ability to persevere in the face of setbacks. That deck is a major job, but you just roll up...I mean... take off your sleeves and handle the problem. Perhaps you didn't record the cussing! Thanks for the inspiration, and I hope the rest of the job goes well, with no more major set backs! Stay safe, and thanks for sharing!
Hi Michelle, Steve, Pups 🐾🐶 and 🐈⬛too 😊👋🏻 Sorry to hear about the deck my friends, but at least you caught it before anything happened 🙏🏻 Stay safe, take care my friends 🫶🏻 God Bless 🙏🏻 Appreciate you!
A neat little tip to find out if two threads are the same pitch is to place on thread on top of the other placing the threads inside of eachother alook to see if you can see light through them.If not then they are the same thread. If you ever cross thread a screw then grind a chanel across the screw thread and screw into the hole that way the channel removes the swarf (broken off thread)
Wow that is unreal the stuf that can go wrong when your deck isnt put together the proper way and with the proper protection. Steve you better pick the lady a sweet and thoughtful gift 💝🎁🧧❤ .. great work !! Ps nice guns at the start of the vid 🤭
Dear Michygoss. 👍👌👏 Lady, you are even more impressive than I already knew. And that's quite impressive! 😁 ;-) 2) Congratulations! 🎉 Tackling all that shows your ton of skills/talents and good nerves. Your husband is a lucky guy and definitely very proud of you. And, yes, of course, you are extremely attractive additionally. It's quite a big bonus but nevertheless not the main thing on this channel. 3) It's very pathetic how the deck was built and you definitely did a much better job at the cabin on the cliff. I really hope that the company who built the house will somehow compensate you for all the effort/work/costs. If not voluntarily, they should be sued or at least named on your channel so that other people get the chance to avoid buying anything from them. 4) How nice of you to care for the neighbour dogs too. The whole bunch obviously has a lot of fun because of and with you. As always: Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing. Best regards luck and especially health to all involved people and dogs.
I'm a retired archtiect, I used to ALWAYS draw and spec 3/4" to 1" spacers between the house siding/house main structure ..and the deck rim joist. That way water/moisture does not collect ..the 1" or less, space allows wood to dry off. Moisture when it collects will rot out ever treated wood. I've watched you for 3 yrs ...I know you'll repair it correctly 😁
Michy, looks like a lot bigger job than expected, complete rebuild of the deck, and framing. Hopefully you'll be able to get the posts you need to complete it.
Trick I’ve done in the shop ; use compressed air to free up a clogged nipple (blow from the inside out in other words reverse flow ) , I’ve also used a small torch and heated the nipple to clear it !
What a Nightmare . I don't think there is ever a simple job , or something you think will only take a few days . This is the first time I have seen you home ( outside ) and it's a Beautiful home and has great views . Steve is one lucky dude , he has a live in welder , carpenter , concreter , lumber jack , saw miller , Vet , Doctor , and the list goes on . Michelle , you are one incredible Lady . I do look forward to watching the DECK build over the next month r so . cheers from Australia ..
Were you able to salvage any of the composite materials for your cliffside cabin? You truly are an amazing person. Steve is lucky to have you in his life. Wishing you, Steve and your construction team a blessed week filled with gentle seasonally appropriate weather and restful evenings. Peace princess
i have a similar but smaller project on the go and thankfully found Edmonton fasteners & tools online. you'll be needing a ton of structural screws for that deck. i just used the fastenmaster headlok screws on a retaining wall and will definitely buy something similar for the deck.
Good that you caught this early. If the deck had collapsed with a few people (a load) on it, could have been a tragedy. Criminal that the original deck builder did no water entry protection. The house interface area looks fixable though, and you'll be keeping a real close eye on weatherproofing the new construction. Cheers!
Very sorry to see the damage to your deck however, after seeing your guns at the very beginning of this episode it's clear you are the right person for the job! Very impressive lady!
Michelle You will now have a deck that will last much longer. Details can really make a huge difference. Waterproofing, tar paper, flashing and whatnot. Stay positive.
💚 One of the few times you didn't wear me out watching however you did make me excited cause if i know anyone who I'd have confidence in soing that reno, it's you My Friend. Kudos ...
Oh, man....rotten wood freaks me out and it's like peeling back the onion. Sorry y'all are having to deal with this ..but glad something didn't cave in.
Nice Michelle, it reminds me of the old saying: The Journey of a thousand miles begins with the first STEP! Looking good and your doing great, and it is all going to come together and work out fine: I know a little more money than expected, but after what i saw you guys are blessed it didd not fall in on ya'll. :) Your amazing Michelle, your hard work, your planning and a tenacity if something doesn't work you keep trying. Tell Steve hey for us from SE Texas Bear Love and Prayers ❤💯🙏 Fur babies looked good :)
Yep. If you can afford it I would replace it all and waterproof it really good. Once your done then it should last 30 years !!! That mosquito was killing me last video 😂. It needed a good slap 😂. Love your videos !!!
We had to replace a similar second-story rotten wooden deck and exterior stairs on our house a few years ago. Luckily, our ledger board was not rotten. Still, it took a crew of four experienced carpenters a couple of weeks to finish it. It seems like such a simple structure until you get into the details.
I have been able to successfully clean out clogged Grease fittings with a propane Torch. Warm it up and you gotta be careful Handling it. Use leather gloves and then hook up your grease gun and put some pressure on it and normally it'll push the hard chunk right out.
One thing I've learned over the years is that when you can finally SEE the rot on a deck, its already too late. On the bright side, we get a house rescue/deck building series now! You're incredible Michelle, keep up the great work!
Hello, Devient la cabane sur la Falaise
Paris vous salut 🤗👍
I love your attitude and the way that you just buckle down and go to work when problems arise. Thanks for bringing us into your life.
Damn, that sucks, Michelle... knowing you, you'll have a brand new deck that will last forever! We're all here to lend moral support.
Michelle, you're bringing back memories of the house I use to have. Would spend my summers working and repairing it. Good luck. Thanks for Sharing!
And I just come on here to profess my ever-loving adoration of Clyde😂 aka Mudsnack. Cuteness overload 🥰
I know!!!! He’s so freaking adorable!!! He has several mud snacks a day lately! 😂
There’s two types of contractors in the world

In a twisted way the deck fire could have saved you from a much more extreme accident of the decking actually collapsing at some point, so not sure if thats some sort of twisted positive.
Glad you're going to vlog this though.
Love the labs,I have had 5 in my lifetime. What a bunch of kids u have!lol So much work to do around the house. Love the music!

Love the feeding training.. the wait, and then ok command.. very cool. Love your channel!

Michele you are amazing one tough Lady;be careful !
A thought for moving trailers with the Bobcat - drill one fork end to fit a towing ball in it - easy to change and makes moving trailers simpler.

I’m sorry you had a fire on your deck. I love everything you do especially the dogs! Love you mean it! ❤🌹
excellent video!!!! keep working hard this series is going to look good.
EXCELLENT fun and fancy FREE shorts at the 18 Min mark❤❤
Nice muscle tone, hard work will do that ❤
I'm a retired archtiect, I used to ALWAYS draw and spec 3/4" to 1" spacers between the house siding/house main structure ..and the deck rim joist. That way water/moisture does not collect ..the 1" or less, space allows wood to dry off. Moisture when it collects will rot out ever treated wood. I've watched you for 3 yrs ...I know you'll repair it correctly 😁
Sometimes you can put a little heat to a plugged up zerk fitting and it fix it
Hello Michèle, this is quite a daring project. Good luck Michèle 💪❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️💋
Perfect project for you Michelle 👌
Michy, looks like a lot bigger job than expected, complete rebuild of the deck, and framing. Hopefully you'll be able to get the posts you need to complete it.
The projects are never ending & you keep on combating them. One day , you'll fully reap the rewards for all the incredibly hard work. Good Luck 😊
Trick I’ve done in the shop ; use compressed air to free up a clogged nipple (blow from the inside out in other words reverse flow ) , I’ve also used a small torch and heated the nipple to clear it !
Always good content 👌 thanks for sharing can't wait for the next one!!
Oh damn! So sorry to see your deck and house rotten Michy. Hopefully don't have to rip the whole house down. Good luck and stay safe!
You are one in a million. A woman in my taste 🥰 Thanks for you videos.
i have a similar but smaller project on the go and thankfully found Edmonton fasteners & tools online. you'll be needing a ton of structural screws for that deck. i just used the fastenmaster headlok screws on a retaining wall and will definitely
buy something similar for the deck.
Good that you caught this early. If the deck had collapsed with a few people (a load) on it, could have been a tragedy. Criminal that the original deck builder did no water entry protection. The house interface area looks fixable though, and you'll be keeping a real close eye on weatherproofing the new construction. Cheers!
Ha. 22 years later isn't really TOO early. But you're right, the whole deck could have collapsed 😮
Holy smokes! It’s a good thing you caught that rot before there was a catastrophic collapse
💚 One of the few times you didn't wear me out watching however you did make me excited cause if i know anyone who I'd have confidence in soing that reno, it's you My Friend. Kudos ...
OMG, when stuff happens at Michy's, STUFF REALLY HAPPENS, good luck, Jack, RI, USA
Oh, man....rotten wood freaks me out and it's like peeling back the onion. Sorry y'all are having to deal with this ..but glad something didn't cave in.
Wow … you be putting in some serious work.
Well. That mill just paid for itself. 👍
Yep. If you can afford it I would replace it all and waterproof it really good. Once your done then it should last 30 years !!! That mosquito was killing me last video 😂. It needed a good slap 😂. Love your videos !!!
The one that won't thread is a drive fitting, and you need a drive tool, they go in an unthreaded hole.
It’s amazing to see so many beautiful dogs being cared for with so much attention to each one. I just love you for that.
Yikes Michy that deck is a mess .But it shows how much better a builder you are .
We had to replace a similar second-story rotten wooden deck and exterior stairs on our house a few years ago. Luckily, our ledger board was not rotten. Still, it took a crew of four experienced carpenters a couple of weeks to finish it. It seems like such a simple structure until you get into the details.
Wow, what a mess, one more winter and that deck would have been on the ground. Good thing you caught this mess before someone got killed
I have been able to successfully clean out clogged Grease fittings with a propane Torch. Warm it up and you gotta be careful Handling it. Use leather gloves and then hook up your grease gun and put some pressure on it and normally it'll push the hard chunk right out.
Oh my lord, sorry about the deck. I hope and pray the rest of your week worked out fine.
Steve is the star of this show. Keep up the great work. On to glory Steve! 💫
Your work ethic and tenacity are admirable Mich, thanks again for a great share and touch of your reality x
