Literally just got home from wing Chun session and we where discussing how Shaolin is long while mantis is close wing Chun falls somewhere in between. Wing Chun is my primary style but really want to add mantis and a few on this list to my arsenal.
Kind of depends whether it's Hakka Mantis or Shandong Mantis. Northern Mantis almost has a closer range than the southern because of the grappling and takedown strategies.
Songshan Shaolin, Northern Shaolin and Cha Quan have a lot of common ancestry so I can definitely see how those three look a like. Hung Kuen and Wing Chun have very distinctive looks. What this says to me is that China is vast in area and history and as such, Chinese martial arts change gradually from region to region. Hung Kuen and Choy Lay Fut, while distinctive in their own rights are going to have a number of techniques that look rather similar. Wing Chun will look similar to other "close quarters" styles such as Bak Mei or Dragon style. Every style I mentioned in this list has a pretty direct connection to the Shaolin Temple

How is Northern Shaolin different from SongShan Temple Shaolin?
Mother of all martial arts = Kalari
Fu Jow Pai by Grandmaster Tak Wah Eng. Also Tiet Kuen
Yes! Bhak Tang Lang ! Northern Praying Mantis... Wong Hon Fun! Great vdo thank you for recognizing Praying Mantis as one of the top 5.... its a popular system, but there’s only a few lineage offering the authentic system in the world.. - Gun Orachan 9th Generation disciple under Grand Master Yuen Man Kai (8th generation) under the Wong Hon Fun Lineage
Yang Style Tai Chi 108 should have been on the list
Awesome video! But my feelings are a little hurt, no mention of my Choy Lay fut style? It’s ok thought, still love these videos 👍
I love CLF! I would totally learn it if given the opportunity
yeahhh way to represent Hung Kuen !!! Great work brother !!!
Northern shaolin is firebending and hung gar is earthbending
Thanks for this knowledgeable video Dmah it's very helpful .. you're awesome.
THIS IS MY SHIT!!! I love learning about what is the signature moves stances and shapes !!
Kung-fu kittens! Best of both worlds!
Nice to see a lot of positive talk in the chat. Everywhere els I see UFC fan boys boxers and wrestlers trashing things with no true knowledge what what it is or its history.
I'm relieved to see that myself! Though I'd like to think that even some MMA practitioners are starting to realize the merits of the traditional arts :)
Shout out to GM Bow Sim Mark @ 1:22. she had a son. Some people might have heard of him...Donnie Yen.
Hehe good catch!
Yeah hung gar. Greatings from switzerland from a student from GM Martin Sewer
Greetings!
Literally just got home from wing Chun session and we where discussing how Shaolin is long while mantis is close wing Chun falls somewhere in between. Wing Chun is my primary style but really want to add mantis and a few on this list to my arsenal.
I definitely recommend 👌👌
Kind of depends whether it's Hakka Mantis or Shandong Mantis. Northern Mantis almost has a closer range than the southern because of the grappling and takedown strategies.
Honestly, they all looked almost the same to me 😳 Only Ip Man’s White Crane looks a bit different
Oh man, thanks so much for explaining and telling...! Would like to know more about these kung fu styles and martial arts..........they're cool AF :o
I wish I could show you guys Bajiquan. I feel you'd appreciate it
Baji Quan is amazing!
Hey there was a great video, very informative. T-shirt looks great but I wouldn't want to use it here in the Bronx NY somebody might want to beat me up just to see if I know anything lmfo lol 😂
I was expecting bajiquan to be on the list but great list neverless
Bajiquan is awesome but it lacks flashiness and is probably really hard to look impressive on film .
@@alexliu5636 true but it depends on the branch, I've seen An Wushu Baji and it kinda has the flashiness, also The Grandmaster movie is a good example of baji in film, otherwise like most northern styles, it's not recognizable compared to the styles of the South when it comes to film depictions due to convenience and other factors.
can you show plz im going to high school next year
I am currently training a Chen style Tai Chi Chuan
How bout tai chi? Yang style tai chi is probably the most popular Chinese art.
You might be right!
Great video and 100% want your shirts
Please make a video on how to learn druken fist
I have studied martial arts while I lived in Taipei Taiwan and later when I lived in the Shandong province of the peoples Republic of China I was fortunate to study with some excellent masters of praying mantis kung fu, regardless of what people say about traditional arts it is a treasure to have as a repertoire for your own personal development 學習螳螂拳就讓我很容易的學別的拳法 I just recently learned taming the Tiger form it’s totally worth learning... hung gar and choy li fut are just amazing!
Buy the way, I have just finished learning 道门八段锦(钟云龙道长). I am thinking of learning Bagua!!!
Awesome!!! Go for it!
Cool man. Enjoyed the summary.

I have tendencies like that too haha
I live in india
I want learn shaulin kungfu
Isn’t firebending inspired by southern Shaolin Kung Fu? I know Hung Gar was the inspiration for Earthbending and Tai Chi for waterbending
Hung Gar is an example of southern shaolin. They wanted the fire kingdom to be distinct from the earth kingdom so they went with northern shaolin. Also, the four bending styles are based on the styles practiced by the show’s martial arts advisor, Sifu Kisu- one of my elders in Northern Shaolin.
Daniel Mah very interesting. Thank you
Hello, I'm from Brazil and I wanted to know if you teach online
I don’t teach regularly but who knows, maybe in the future?
Congratulations on the growth of your channel guys. I remember when you guys were at 70k subscribers. Now yall have over half a million
Thanks for sticking with us all this time!
Ihr seit die besten hi from Germany
Love the Master of Tai Chi music in the background. When will the Martial Club Hoodie be back, Daniel?
Which size are you looking for?
@@lohan570 I'm looking for a large.
I practice American Kenpo but thank you so much for preserving the beautiful arts of Kung-Fu for the internet generation.
Hello
Still can't believe you skipped Taijiquan...
Because Tai Chi is generally useless. Even the forms explored here are little more than dancing, and would get you absolutely pummelled by a decent MMA fighter.
But Tai Chi is especially useless in reality. Might look nice in a Golden Harvest movie, but it is utterly useless
@@wosandberg Yang Tai Chi actually has some of my favorite clinch techniques for San Da. But I shouldn't expect an armchair expert like you to know anything ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
