2020 KTM 1290 Super Duke R - First ride Review

  • I picked up the 2020 KTM 1290 Super Duke R a few days ago so here is my initial first ride review of what I think so far. The Superduke R original was KTM's 'Beast' naked motorcycle but it never quite lived up to the hype. The next revision of the Super Duke R 2.0 was an improvement but suffered a very spritely front end, so how does the 2020 1290 Super Duke R fair?

    I tried one of these recently back to back with the new Streetfighter & as a road bike I much preferred the Ktm. The Ducati is a fab thing but you have to rev it to get the most from it so that means insane speeds whereas the 1290 with that incredible midrange is much nicer & friendlier.......But i've already had 2 gen 1s & 2 gen 2s so maybe i'm a little biased. I live in the s/w France just 1 hour from Spanish border & some of the best riding roads in Europe so if any of you guys want to come down shoot me a line. Picking up new Superduke next weekend.....can't wait!

Yes this bike makes you feel young. If someone purchased this as first bike they'll die.

    Rocket accelerator. You slipped past all the traffic like they were parked. Got you at the turn around. I'm older too,but I would still set a foot for the immediate pivot and give it a turn about on the short. Unless you have really grippy tires you should just spin 180 in half the space. This is a very quiet bike. KTM makes race bikes for the off road and touring experience, so your power is not a surprise on this bike. This is such a beautiful bike.

      But.... I was out with my lot today and they were all on GS’s and I tell you what - for normal road riding you can’t loose the tractors and they are way more stable at high speeds along crappy British back roads. Only time the Duke really shone was the faster A-roads were I could stretch its legs over 6-7k revs, then it just takes off!
      It’ll wheelie in 4th!!!!...... apparently 😬😂

    I had a GS and randomly went for a test ride of the ‘19 Duke last April. I sold the KTM dealer the GS and bought a new Duke at the end of the test ride .... it is ridiculous, it is too much, but every trip is an adventure and even the noise and punch to road legal max speeds is a joy. I do miss the GS, a more “all rounder” would be great, so ideally if you afford the two... best of all worlds.

    Apparently the original SD had a 180 hp then it was revised to 170 etc etc.
    I had the original SD, it was bonkers but also a very unrefined. It wobbled even on a constant throttle through corners my old FZS1000 would glide through. It also leaked oil and unless you were in the right gear it was useless.
    I ended up selling it and buying an MT10.

      Since today is Canada day, I'll be picking mine up this coming Friday. I purchased it due from being big guy and now at 55 years old, my days of hard core sport bikes over. Never had the opportunity take it for test drive, but from all the reviews not one issue. Just pure road warrior fun. Got the tech package, what's funny my ZX-14 has zero rider aids, will take sometime getting used to electronic package. 🇨🇦 Now that I've had it for few days can't figure out C1, C2 have you had any issues?

    • @ScorpyonMike
      @ScorpyonMike 4 года назад +2

      @@ross5506 If you haven't figured out C1 / C2 yet, they are "shortcuts" you can use to jump to various functionalities.
      But first you need to set them to something (because I think that by default they are not set to any function, I can't remember).
      To do this, go to Settings -> Custom Switches -> Custom Switch 1 / 2 and set them to whatever you wish. Then when you press the switch, it should jump to that functionality.
      Hope this helps.

    • @ross5506
      @ross5506 4 года назад

      @@ScorpyonMike yes I finally figured it out. Now with 600 kilometers,I did burn- out engine light is on. Runs fine. I read on some forum people have also done this,after 3 cold start goes away. Only disappoinment cheap steering dampener,going put 30 weight oil. Beside that great if not best bike in 40+ years of riding. Why it has a 6 th gear no idea, lol.

    • @ScorpyonMike
      @ScorpyonMike 4 года назад

      @@ross5506 Glad you figured it out ^_^. I don't own the bike (though I would VERY much like to), I just developed the functionality (I'm the developer that implemented the custom switch feature), but as development goes, it was a long time ago so my memory was foggy about the default values. Especially since the functionality received some updates.
      As for the engine light, I'm just wondering, but did the "shift light" start blinking while you were doing the burnout? (shift light is when the RPM bar starts blinking, or if you go high enough even the whole screen starts blinking).
      If yes, and you were in the "whole screen blinking mode" and kept throttling, then that might be the reason why the engine light turned on. Normally, that just tells you to go to a service to go have the engine checked and make sure everything is alright. But most often, it's not an issue.
      Also, when they check the engine at a service, they reset DTCs so the engine light goes off, and only if it turns back on it usually means you might have a slight problem (as long as it's amber and not red. if red, then you should immediately stop riding and take the bike to a service, or you risk badly damaging the engine).
      As for the 6th gear, the bike has plenty of horsepower and torque to still keep going even when in 5th gear, so why not put a 6th gear? :D
      Keep in mind that KTM is an Austrian company, which is the next door neighbour to Germany where they have motorways that have no speed limit... so the sky is the limit.

    • @ross5506

      Me too,I find the steering dampener sucks,you can put thinker oil 30 weight or get the one that KTM should of from start in power parts WP apex dampener is 12 way adjustable. KTM is really CHEAP. Found a perfect screen for it, company located from France. If you can't find it message me and send you company name,look like will do much better job than the power bronze. Cheers from Canada,I just had it Dyno 2019 model are around 153 HP at wheel,2020 172 at wheel so much for 3 go more lol. Put Austin slip-on V3 200mm with any another mode 178.8 HP back wheel. Currently torn between this and its baby brother the 890R. Both seem to be getting fabulous reviews. Coming from a 2016 1290GT and a 990SMT before that, whatever i get it will be Orange!

    What a machine only 3 are available here in Ontario Canada. They are price gouging. KTM should have the electronic package as standard in such competitive class. Sure is sweet machine! Great review, i love the laughs making you feel like teenagers at 55 year's old my days off being hunched over are gone. Perfect for us old road warriors. Cheers from Canada. "The bike that sniffs glue" lol.

    I upgraded to the 2017 1290 all black full Akra model from the 2015 model but this latest one i just don't like the looks such as plastic around the tank, the wheels, seat and especially the lack of trellis frame as the previous one had, i do like the upgraded dash/switchgear, however beauty is in the eye of the beholder so that's just my thoughts.

    I Know Exactly how you feel, i picked up my 2020 SDR on Tuesday! My only gripe is the KTM MY Ride is non existent! Is that yet another pay to unlock!! I got the "tech Pack" for $750 oh excuse me $900 OTD! The Tech Pack included all other upgrades but no KTM My Ride! WTF! Awesome video! Best SDR description ever!

    I had a courtesy one in 2015 when my bike was in for a service, even though it’s 5 yrs on I still remember vividly how exciting a bike it was and so incredibly easy to ride.... slight trepidation at first on hearing and reading the write ups but once on it I felt immediately at home.... Think about passing a vehicle and before you know it , it’s in your mirrors... if ever there was a psychic motorcycle then this is it.... maybe a Psychic Rhino lol... another great review and something to get excited about!!

    Was TMF the curse, or is it the curse that TMF complains of😉? Very timely review TP1 - went for a ride with a mate, he on one of those 114 ci HD and me on my s1000r, and the torque of his bike was apparent in how our bikes accelerated when hitting our equivalent Nationals. In all honestly, far better for road use than the s1000r and current hypernakeds. Just happens SuperDuke has similar torque as his HD, and me thinks the SD will be test ridden very soon. Back on the short list of replacements for my much ridden ‘17 BMW

      teapotone your welcome bud, and in all honesty I think the only editing skills PM has on yourself is colour grading. But that obviously comes from his photography background and as far as “motorvloggers” goes you are 100% the top dog for editing. Been watching your vids since I saw you on “adventure bike tv” years ago and your skill set is on a constant climb “every day is a school day” anyway I think I’ve buttered you up enough haha in summary great vid and can’t wait for the next one. If you ever want to learn about tarantulas (god knows why you would) give me a watch bud.
