  • @bbouchan1
    @bbouchan1 4 года назад +5

    This is my 5th 1290, I've had 2 gen 1s & 2 gen 2s which were nicer than the gen1s but this gen 3 Superduke is on a totally different level. Already done 5000 km & am truly intoxicated by this bike. I live in Pau s/w France about 1hr from Spain where I do most of my riding & can exploit the performance of this machine but how Ktm have made such a powerful bike so comfortable & usable even in town is amazing & it's the shape of the seat that's more important than the material for the comfort. My only negative & I agree it's the indicator switch.

    • @jsmith2489
      @jsmith2489 4 года назад

      How do you find the reach comfort after a few hours on the bike. What I liked most about my gen 1 was the upright position, even added risers to get the bars up and closer. That’s my only hangup on the 2020.

    • @bbouchan1
      @bbouchan1 4 года назад

      @@jsmith2489 When I first sat on the bike in the showroom I was a little worried because you are definitely more prone & thought I might have to bring the bars back with the fitted adjustment. But after a few hours use I had no problem & find it very comfortable in fact I quite like the more aggressive position, being more over the front seems to suit the slightly more sporting nature of the bike over the gen 1 & 2. The only negative I would say is maybe you are more locked into your riding position due to the seat covering not allowing you to slide around so much. But we are all different shapes & sizes & have different riding styles & uses & the 1290 seems to suit me....Very happy!

    I had a test ride of one a couple of months ago. It's bonkers and brilliant. The KTM chap asked me what I thought , I said "It's a bit slow ! ", that briefly confused him :-D
    Although I should have really asked him if he knew of a good counsellor for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, that's what I really needed.
    I'm not really keen on the looks of any KTM, but for those that like that kind of look, and don't mind the very major risk of a licence losing speeding ticket, it is very good.
    On the same day I also test rode a Speed Triple RS, a bit slower, but still way more than enough for me, a bit cheaper too. I ended up getting one of them.

    • @Icem4n84
      @Icem4n84 4 года назад +1

      Oddly enough those are the 2 bikes I want to test ride...

    • @karlosh9286
      @karlosh9286 4 года назад

      @@Icem4n84 They're (obviously) both very good. You could easily lose your licence on either of them. You can do it a little bit quicker on the KTM !
      For me there was a deal on the Speed Triple, it was around £3k cheaper than the KTM SDR, plus I do prefer the looks of the Triumph.
      But for those that like the KTM modern aggressive look, it's very good. You really don't need any more power on either of them.
      Around the time, I'd also test ridden a CB1000R . It was very good, suspension was a bit softer, it was more top endy than either the Speed Triple or KTM SDR. Speed Triple and SDR both gave a much better kick from lower revs, kind of the only place you can use some of the power on the road.

    • @thorstenhoffmann5586
      @thorstenhoffmann5586 3 года назад

      Hi, i own 2021 SDR and used it for 4000km this year after riding other bikes for 25 years before. My opinion is that its your own responsibility of loosing license when driving fast bikes. BlablaBla...This is not depending on the bike but on the driver. And it is not a beginner bike, for sure not. For your own safety, please dont buy this bike after only 1-2 years of experience. My recommendation only.

    • @angelokerasidis9893
      @angelokerasidis9893 4 года назад +6

      See the phrase beginner bike gets used so much , but what really matters is if it’s a beginner bike for a 16 year old, a 22 year old , a 42 year old.
      Another thing that would also make a difference is the riders experience with cars. I know the two are completely different but a person that has been driving a car for 20 years will know the roads a lot better than a 20 year old.
      Another thing that would matter is who that person is. Someone that had driven fast cars and has shown he is able to hold back on the throttle and think maturely, can probably begin with a bit bigger motorcycle than a 400.

    • @nero91

      The front end is simply perfect. Looks so aggressive, yet so refined. Compared to the bug eyes of the speed triple, or the boring headlights of the Zh2/S1000r, it just looks amazing. The Ducati V4 S is the only other naked I can think of that can compete in terms of looks.

    I'm planning on test riding one of these but I'm quite nervous about so I'd like to ask to anyone that has ridden a 1290 duke r before: how easy is it to ride? Is there good throttle feel, like can you feel the limit? I'm worried that it might throw me off because of all that power but if the throttle is nicely controllable I think I'll be fine.

      I recently sold my gen 2 with a view getting a gen 3. I was lucky enough to get to ride a gen 3 around Snowdonia for a few hours a while back and absolutely loved it as I did trying my first 1290. Very easy to ride, handles beautifully and all the other good things a premium bike should be. Yes the power/torque is amazing but nowhere near as scary as some say. It really is a fabulous bike and I'm getting close to buying an evo. I'd definitely recommend testing one. Where are you? I'm in North Wales and we have a good KTM dealer close by.

      The fueling on the bike (Atleast for the gen 2 which I own) is absolutely beautiful. It's super smooth, not jerky at all, and gives you plenty of warning and full control over the power. It's just as happy to cruise around town as it is to rip your arms off. Beautiful bike, best I have ever owned.

    Owned this bike for 4 months now and i agree everyhing that you said in good and bad. Indicators they really suck but that is really only thing there's wrong with this bike. 3rd gear full pull and you want change underwear once you stop. It rips so hard that wheel comes off the road even when pressing down your body against tank. Realistically for road use 2/3 throttle is more than enough. Nice to have that extra reserve though, even when you don't really need it.

    honestly, its a beast of a bike but for the price you may as well get a 790 or an 890, all the same bonkers-ness but way cheaper and includes all the extra doodads in the base price.

    • @Englishbikerdan
      @Englishbikerdan  4 года назад +2

      While the 790 is fun, it's not a supernaked. This is for people who want the top tier power but you do have to pay the moneys! On the road it's a lovely bike to ride but for me, I wouldn't need that much power. I've not ridden the 890 yet but again, it's not going to offer you the same levels of power as the Beast. You still have to pay for the Tech Pack and Track Pack on the 890R but you get them with the 790. The 790 is now £7,500 here which is a bargain! I am 99.9% sure there is a KTM in my future.

    How do torquey bikes like this one put down so much torque without constantly spinning up the rear and being unridable?
    I'm seriously considering part exchanging of my R1 for the Superduke R1. How does the lack of front fairing affect your riding? Do you get blown around a lot?

    • @Englishbikerdan
      @Englishbikerdan  4 года назад +1

      These days they have complicated electronics that help prevent spinning wheels and even wheelie control so you don't flip the thing. You can of course reduce/turn off some of these. Certainly while riding in the wet it's nice to have some safety features in case you have a lapse in judgement or concentration.

      Should I say a slightly (slightly being the operative word) louder vespa?
      In all seriousness, mate, I don't mean the amplitude of sound, I'm just referring to the tone. I feel like such massive cylinders should have much more or a thump to them (deep growl like Ducati Diavel or MT10), instead all I hear is empty putt-putt-putt-putt.
      Basically, I'm referring to the tone quality.
