A sandrail, or sand rail, or rail, is a lightweight off-road motor vehicle specifically built for traveling in sandy terrain. Similar in some respects and often mistakenly referred to as a dune buggy or sand car, a sandrail is a different type of speciality vehicle. Sandrails are popularly operated on actual sand dunes. Sandrails can be driven on other types of terrain but are designed specifically for sand.
At the end of World War II thousands of soldiers returning from the war had spent years driving Jeeps, tanks, and half-tracks with few or no roads. Having an increased disposable income, these GIs formed the original core of off-road enthusiasm. Initially, they used surplus Jeeps and cut-up cars to build their off-road vehicles. Soon these "off-roaders" discovered that with little more than a skid plate, they could get a stock air-cooled Volkswagen Beetle to go almost anywhere.[2] Throughout the 1950s the sport continued to develop.
In 1958 Pete Beiring of Oceano, Calif., took the body frame or "pan" from a damaged Volkswagen and shortened it into a new machine that eventually became the precursor to the dune buggy. This eventually led to the first production dune buggy called the "Sportster", which was developed around 1960 by the EMPI Imp Company. It was an angular sheet metal vehicle built on a stripped-down Volkswagen chassis. Many others followed including the ever popular Meyers Manx design.[3] Dune buggies had a style all their own with fiberglass siding and other "heavy" body features.
As the late 1960s and early '70s approached, enthusiasts saw the need for lighter and more powerful sand vehicles, easily capable of ascending steeper and higher dunes. Many started experimenting at home by building super light weight vehicle frames from metal tubing, often without a roll cage. Many were nothing more than a frame, engine, transmission, wheels and one or two seats. Because of their versatility, light weight and simplicity the air-cooled Volkswagen engine and transmission were the power plant of choice for many owners. It also offered the perfect body arrangement. By placing the motor and transmission in the rear of the frame it allowed the front of the sandrail to remain extremely light and thus able to "float" over the sand dunes. An added value of placing the engine in the rear of the vehicle was that heat created by the motor did not blow into the face of the driver and passengers. From the 1970s forward, sandrail builders continued to develop the delicate balance between weight and power.
The 426 Hemi of the 1960s was an engine produced for use in NASCAR, as raced in a Plymouth Belvedere in 1964. It was not initially available to the general buying public. The 426 Hemi was not allowed to compete in NASCAR's 1965 season due to its unavailability in production vehicles sold to the general public and because of complaints by Ford regarding its power. However several special production versions of the Dodge Dart, the Plymouth Fury, and later, in 1965, the Dodge Coronet, were produced with aluminum fenders and bumpers for drag racing and made available to the general public.
That's The Engine, Chassis, Wheels/Tires From The Piranha Kit. Good Job Chris, have a Blessed Wknd.
Thanks!
You're Very Welcome.
Even tho this kit isn't something I would typically build , I still watch your videos because I learn from the tips and tricks you provide. And also good ideas. Thanks !
I appreciate that!
great build, makes me want to buy one! But it's not a 426 Hemi, it's the older 392 Hemi.
I was wondering 'bout that....kool
Ahh, ok.
R2 just released the '29 Woody pick-up kit...as a kool 4 in 1.the guy said it won't be avail. till a little later in October...Rock on Chris
RJ
Yeah, looking forward to it!
October update video from Round2 shows the truck with bike, love seeing the order kits coming back to live
Yup, saw that just as I wrapped up this build. Awesome!
Love your stuff very cool to see how it is built exactly out of the box. Sure would like to see some more airplanes even if you’re just unboxing them but I know cars are your thing keep up the good work!
Thanks!
Great job 👏 👍 Chris can't wait for the next one lol 😆 😀 and here to help get your videos 📹 out to everyone 😀 👍
Thanks again!
Yes the fuel tank should be up front. Remember the funny car's had them up front. Once again great job. 👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks 👍
Nice kit. For people that don't like plastic tires (like me) and are "Well, i'd built it but the tires..." (not like me) there's after market tires and the part box to get the tires to replace those. Just like I did with my Lindberg re-issued 1981 Firebird by Testors. Didn't want the plastic tires, so I went in my parts, found four Monogram vinyl tires that were EXACTLY like the tires of the kit (so, who copied who, I dunno) and put them on the rims, then made back for the wheels out of styrene sheet.
Thanks for watching as always!
Beautiful sand buggie Chris!! Fun presentation, I really dig the background music on this build!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great job Chris! I remember the individual exhaust pipes and I always got them looking a little off too. It was a good idea but not always easy to get them perfectly aligned. This was a fantastic tutorial and it brought back a lot of fond memories. Thanks for sharing this.
The '29 Model A Woody and Roadster pickup is coming out soon as a 2 in 1 kit.
Yeah, the video came out just as I wrapped this up. Awesome!
It’s a repop. However, in past repops of this kit there were the parts included that made it nearly a complete Barris Ala-Kart. Will be interesting to see if they still include them since they eventually tooled up and released a newer version of the Ala-Kart since the original pressing?
It’s a shame that there is no driver figure in the kit!
Nice build. Would like to see a driver figure added for the display.
Cool idea!
NICE job, Chris ! I had to smile, because on the diorama, with no driver, it looks like the car's out of control ! So, I'm going to add the driving figure from the"Dart Board" kit, as my driver ! I'll heat his legs if necessary to get him to fit.
Thanks!
Aaaaaw Chris Noooooooooooo ! Anything BUT Jazz.............. Nice job on the Sandkat, looks really smart.
Thanks!
It would look great on a piece of carved expanded foam with the rooster tales done the same way. A driver figure would be great too
What a cool build and awesome video, GREAT JOB BROTHER.... This is a fun quick build, and are the types of kits that are perfect and exciting for the younger builder or builders without much experience. Thank you very much for sharing and please keep em coming !!!! Please everyone keep yourselves and love ones safe and healthy and remember to SMILE it's a hobby and it's suppose to be FUN.
Thanks!
Such a great kit .
Awesome work as always.
Great cardboard extra .
I would like to drive this , it would be sick !
👍👍👍👍👍👍😂😁😂😁😂😁
Thanks for another amazing build Chris! And thanks for the way you communicate and tell a story with your art and love being able to share with kids and nieces and nephews so they know than can build there kit there way! Awesome work as always loved it!! ☺️👍
Thanks!
@@hpiguy Thankyou Chris 👍
Always a great review and awesome build. Those plastic wheels brought back memories of kits I built in the 60's.looks like a fun kit.always loved the cardboard diorama back in the day. thanks Chris big fan of your channel.peace
Go to the Round 2 RUclips channel. They announced it on the October 2021 video.
Yeah, they released the video with the Woody pickup this week.
Yup, the video came out hours after I wrapped this video.
Great build. Love the weathering on the frame. How creative. Thanks for sharing this build.
Thanks!
I think the pickup is a 4 in one kit.👍👍
Can you please show how you mated the wheels together because the kit doesn't work???? 😊 👍 Please help
That Schwinn Stingray with the pickup has been issued before.
Correct and is being reissued this Fall.
Always a good time 👍 thanks guy 😊
I have come to realise there are only a few good kits the trick is finding them 😁
Building over 100 kits per year for years now, I've only come across a couple kits that I'd say were 'bad'.
I don't have much issue with most of them.
This is another recreation of the Piranha AMT dragster / funny car it was also used as a Scorpion kit which is a unique looking Corvette styled road race style Drag Car sharing the same chassis with the 392 Hemi engine and lastly this chassis was under one of the 53 Studebakers with the Chopped Top out of four cars that the Piranha's chassis was used in, The last two are the hardest to find and expensive on the internet, Just a little insight on what you're working on, Keep the great videos coming up..
Looks like the kind of kit that you should buy 2 of. Hey. It would be funny to put a Prius in the sand dune diorama!
Thanks!
Nice.. What Brand and Type of glue do you like to use?
www.modelroundup.com/Plastruct-Plastic-Bondene-Solvent-Cement-p/pls-00003.htm
Great'n cool model!
I think so too!
Very fun video and build. Thank you!
Thanks!
Cool re-issue Chris. Nice to see it available once again.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Nice, I built the Monogram Sand Crab, back in the 70's.
Thanks!
Thats a cool kit went to model round up & put it in my cart should be out soon for purchase … Awesome job
I'm sure they appreciate it! Thanks!
Very cool build! I picked up a couple of garage kit resin 1/25 race car driver figures off EBay a year or two ago, will need to dig them out!!
Thanks!
It's a shame that Round 2 didn't include a figure. This one really cries out for one.
Great build video. Just an observation here ..... if it's displayed in launch position maybe there should be a driver for the driver seat..... don't pay the Grumpy Old Man any attention...... he's just grumpy! 😉
A driver would certainly bring it to life.
really cool model kit, love your channel chris hate cheap garbage plastic tires please give us what we paid for nice rubber or vinyl tires
Thanks for watching!
Fun build - thanks again. Like to see different things on here.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hi Chris
Love the show but a legally blind builder would ask that you mention the names of paints used in the boothgrather than justwrite it on the screen and in cases such as this kit or other modified or drag cars you point out such things as 'branded' rocker covers etc as love to hav old Chrysler Fire Por' ons in the case of old 392's or old MT' ones as used in the old Vega drag car(for BB Chevs) as cant see well enough to know what kits to buy for parts.
Also what do you do with unused parts and are you interested in selling them as after the chrome 5 hole wheels forom the AMT Ford and Single axle semi trailer you built (were a 5 hole chrome wheel) as want a set of 4 for a Road Train I'm building. otherwise keep up the good work, Locky
Must be radio controlled cause there ain't a figure included to drive it while rooster tailing. Nice kit but an all too common oversight of model companies. Maybe he is the guy in the sand cause he got thrown out of the car... Anyway it looks great Chris. I like the blue.
Throttle stuck, look out!!!
Neat they included a basic diorama. Should have included a driver.
I believe at one time it was the Scorpion kit by AMT, but with a body.
"Paperback Rider" - how about "Cardboard Sand Slider"? Nice kit with just enough detail to make it interesting. Of course a good run past Chris's crafty weathering station made it a realistic miniature. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks!
This is way cool yours looks fantastic
Thanks!
What a great build, Chris. But it could use a driver. I’ve got a question for you. I just got a dehydrator and I was wondering what the difference time and temperatures you use for drying the paint? Thanks
I usually set it to 90-110 degrees and leave the paint until it's dry to the touch which doesn't take long. Pretty simple to use and speeds things up a lot.
What would the wheelbase dimension be? The kit would make a great under carriage for a wagon body I've acquired.
That is a cool car Chris!
Thanks!
How do the wheels join together please? Because the dual wheel adapter doesn't work? It's hollow 😕 help please
Round2 does monthly reveal videos ou RUclips and they just showed that Woody for October so it's coming out VERY soon
Heck yeah, saw that just as I wrapped this up. Pumped for it!
Awesome build. I love your energy.
Thanks!
Ooooh, would you look at that motah! (Southern Accent) Very Cool!
Oh yes!
I remember when you could buy a new car with a motor like this! My sister's family just sold their late model Suburban because the "green" engine was slow, anemic, had no pulling power and still got crappy gas mileage! But, hey, as long as the emmissions are environmentally friendly! Who needs torque and horsepower when you can have 5 tons of safety equipment.
Cool kit and great build! It would be nice if there was a driver, but a nice set up!
That would be cool!
Round 2 is releasing the 29 woody/pick up with the bicycle as a 4 in 1 kit. Must be both stock and custom woody or pick up
Yeah, just saw that, can't wait!
Just wondering.. where do you display all these models? It would be a cool video!
There is no giant display warehouse where these are all out on shelves. That's as simple of an answer as I can give. :)
It seems like those panels on the chassis are a good place to catch the sand thrown up by the wheels
Yup, you could pack those with dirt and sand for a neat look.
Always enjoy your work! I'm curious, do you airbrush on your builds or are you satisfied with the spray can? It looks fantastic, just curious is all 🙂
I have a couple nice airbrushes but with all the sprays out there I haven't had much use for them in a while. I still use them on a rare occasion when I need to mix a color like the Mr Bean build or the Role Models Bronco.
This kit is cool. There is a very good reason why the "Moon tank" is mounted in the front.
I like the model. Not crazy about the diarama
Thanks!
lol , keep them "friction fits" comin'
Thanks!
Some of those chassis parts look like their from the Piranha kit, probably are but doesn’t matter I guess, right? I think they used some of the same parts in the Corvair Chezooom kit too.
Yup, they are. I've built that on the show as well.
@@hpiguy - yeah I remember that buddy! Anyhow, they all turn out cool builds and with this one too! Keep on rocking it brother! Peace ✌🏻
Another nice build
Thanks!
Another huge hit great job Chris
Thanks!
Nice review and a great looking build. Thanks for sharing Chris.
Another fine job! Looks nice on the paper soon. I agree with the others a driver figure would be great!
Awsome build man !
I love AMT Models, and how they repurposed alot of kits back in the day !
That one used to be the old Hemi Studebaker Funny car, and may even been the Piranah funny car as well.
Thanks Steve!
👏👌👍
Thanks!
Great stuff mate👍
Is this supposed to be an autonomous vehicle? No driver!!!
great build
Thanks!
👍👍👍👍
Thanks!
They could have gave rubber tires for that price
haha, driving car with no driver at the wheel! spooky...
Lots of flash on this kit 😕 not an easy kit to build for a novis👍
