My 04 has the oil filter in the front and a separate drain plug. First time I changed the oil myself, I noticed the heat shield had never been moved away from the filter as its impossible to access without moving and creasing it. The dealer had never changed the filter after multiple services. It does make a bit of a mess. I guess the primadonna at the dealer didn't want to get dirty. What a wanker! Love the presentation. Recommend to add about half a quart of fresh oil when the drain plug is out. It will push out most of the remaining oil in the pan. You will see when it starts draining clear. A little flush is good. About to hit 190,000 miles..still runs like a clock.
This is the best channel I have come across for the Audi S4 B6 and B7 models, and believe me I've been looking at lots before I pull the trigger on one of these. Before I started looking, it seemed RUclips only saw issues with BMW engines. That engine air box lid is tight but do-able with care. Oil filter on top is much easier than one underneath behind a structural shield (BMW n73).

Have to agree on the Nexen tyres. They tend to crack early like these (likley due to heat on more performance orientated models). So you have little tread wear but the cracks creep in. Thanks, I just used this video to change the oil in my 2007 S4 Cab. I couldn't find the sump plug washer in stock anywhere, which is usually called an oil plug gasket in the US, without ordering it, but otherwise all good... Spare the mess I made due to my messed up hands.
For my A4 B7 2.0 TFSI I use VAG original 5W40, so far it's good. Wasn't sure what type of oil to buy, but I decided to go with the original VAG engine oil. Castrol was my second option.

To speed things up start with the filter cover, it drains wile you get it up and take the engine covers off, drain the oil and do filters, put the plug in and fill it with oil trough the oil filter housing (easier and no funnel needed) and at last the filter change and close it.

Brilliant..:) Great information on basic maintenance. A lot of Audi Dealers in my area USA: use Pennzoil or Castro, in my case I use Motul oil it’s been Fantastic I feel the difference in performance and gas mileage also oil consumption. By the way the owner of that Audi S4 looks like its been driving on a farm in mud and grass, needs a big time washing. 🥂🥂🤙

One thing I hate hearing about cars is "Surface Rust". Being told, oh its fine, thats just surface rust. Where does rot start...surface rust. Wire brush the "surface" rust away. Quick spray with Hammerite direct to rust. FIXED! Surface rust turns into full blown rusty flakes, that turns into a hole. Id rather pay an extra £20 - £30 and be told "we found some spots of surface rust, but we have dealt with it and it shouldn't turn into a problem for many years.

That's why we decided to include it in the DIY guide as it's easy enough to do yourself and doesn't take long, but goes a long way towards ongoing maintenance and avoiding potential issues. Many garages won't remedy surface rust as they can only charge for the work they are undertaking, but likewise it's usually not too expensive to get them to underseal the car as a dedicated job too. But if you are doing your own servicing work it's definitely worth spending the extra half an hour or so to do some tidying and rust protection for good peace of mind. Hi, thanks for the great content! A few other RUclipsrs are recommending 5W-40 oil instead of the standard 5W-30 saying it could slightly help the timing chain issue.. what are your thought on that line of thinking? Also when my chain guides break can I take it to you? :D
Every single S4/RS4 driver that i personally know has done 5W40, me also, i just ordered 5W50 from LiquiMoly-Molygen which is a bit too extreme but good engine needs good Oil, most important thing is that the oil you want to put into the engine is allowed from Audi, there are Specs for Oils for BBK engine on page 324 or 326 (not sure exactly) in repair manual. Please do not get me wrong 5W30 is also a great oil but since B6/B7 have very small engine compartment there is not much place for heat to escape, and 5W40/5W50 will take care of possible quicker wear that can occur due to high oil temperatures. Also this is my personal Opinion, which some people find wrong.
Excellent video, I just picked up a b6 and will be doing this service soon. I did notice on first engine start up after replacing the oil, there was this loud clunk from the car when the rpms settled to a cold start idle, between 39:02 and 39:03. Is that cam chain rattle or another culprit? My car makes the exact same sounding clunk on startup after sitting a bit. It startled me at first, though it never persists while driving.
That sounds like far too much!! The S4's can oil quite a bit of oil, surprisingly so sometimes. Plus when you look at the official Audi specs at what's acceptable oil usage it's quite shocking. BUT, not that much!! I would have first said possible Nikosil cylinder lining issue, but you said no leaks. Any unusual coloured smoke? @@TotalTechnik lol exactly where on earth is it going. A little white coloured smoke at start up, but nothing out of the ordinary that I've noticed. I use to have a leaky sump that has been sealed. I'm putting in anywhere between 2-4 litres monthly depending on how much I drive it 😅

I have a B7 cabriolet with the 4.2 and getting straight answers from either the Audi dealer or the independent service shops is almost impossible. They are so focused on running up the prices and doing jobs that were not requested, apparently to persuade me to buy a new car because of the gouging prices that they charge for parts and services. I just turned an independent service advisor inside out, figuratively speaking, after waiting for two weeks to find out what was going on. I was told that the Audi dealer parts department wouldn’t return his calls. The parts in question: the two transmission lines. I found them online in 5 minutes at a $250 price on EBay. They were brand new and guaranteed to fit. The service advisor first told me that they were used, then that they were Lithuanian knock offs and that they cost the same as actual Audi parts @ $450 anyway. I usually get kissed after a screwing like that.
When you spun the wheel there was a slight grinding sound, is that normal? I heard that on my car and was worried that it may either be the brakes were sticking or it was a bad wheel bearing.
Well, grinding and rubbing can be similar. You will likely have a light rubbing, like in this video, where the pad is touching the face of the disc. But it should be very light. Yes, it could be indeed be sticking brakes, or a wheel bearing. Try rotating in both directions and see if the noise changes. A bad wheel bearing should also be apparent when you are driving (try with window open), especially whilst cornering. Sticking brakes could vary a little in cause depending on whether front or rear (as rear also has the parking brake). A sticking piston in the caliper can cause this. Make sure that the timing chains have been replaced unless you are looking at a really low mileage example. The chains require that the engine has to be removed from the car before they can be replaced. Figure $4-5,000 for the job. That’s what I was quoted.
Are you sure this oil is good enough? It's cheap and generic. I'm also suspicious about the "100% synthetic" statement. I know Audi recommends it - even the cap is Castrol branded. But it seems to be just a marketing. I'm an owner of the 2011 Audi S3 Sportback (engine code: CDLA). I used this particular oil, then Liqui Moly Synthoil High Tech 5W40 and finally Millers EE Performance 5W40, witch is very good, IMO. Castrol leaves more sludge and deposit, which means it doesn't keep the engine clean enough. Liqui Moly is good, but a bit too thin (increased oil consumption). Millers has no such disadvantages. It's not cheap, but driving any "S" Audi you really shouldn't save money on oil.
The engine is not high performance enough to require any special oil. This is another example of shoddy German engineering. Used to work on German cars in late 90s… looks like they haven’t learned a thing since then.

5w-40 is recommended for this engine

I have a B7 cabriolet with the 4.2 and getting straight answers from either the Audi dealer or the independent service shops is almost impossible. They are so focused on running up the prices and doing jobs that were not requested, apparently to persuade me to buy a new car because of the gouging prices that they charge for parts and services. I just turned an independent service advisor inside out, figuratively speaking, after waiting for two weeks to find out what was going on. I was told that the Audi dealer parts department wouldn’t return his calls. The parts in question: the two transmission lines. I found them online in 5 minutes at a $250 price on EBay. They were brand new and guaranteed to fit. The service advisor first told me that they were used, then that they were Lithuanian knock offs and that they cost the same as actual Audi parts @ $450 anyway. I usually get kissed after a screwing like that.

When you spun the wheel there was a slight grinding sound, is that normal? I heard that on my car and was worried that it may either be the brakes were sticking or it was a bad wheel bearing.
Well, grinding and rubbing can be similar. You will likely have a light rubbing, like in this video, where the pad is touching the face of the disc. But it should be very light. Yes, it could be indeed be sticking brakes, or a wheel bearing. Try rotating in both directions and see if the noise changes. A bad wheel bearing should also be apparent when you are driving (try with window open), especially whilst cornering. Sticking brakes could vary a little in cause depending on whether front or rear (as rear also has the parking brake). A sticking piston in the caliper can cause this. Best of luck!

Make sure that the timing chains have been replaced unless you are looking at a really low mileage example. The chains require that the engine has to be removed from the car before they can be replaced. Figure $4-5,000 for the job. That’s what I was quoted.

Are you sure this oil is good enough? It's cheap and generic. I'm also suspicious about the "100% synthetic" statement. I know Audi recommends it - even the cap is Castrol branded. But it seems to be just a marketing.
I'm an owner of the 2011 Audi S3 Sportback (engine code: CDLA). I used this particular oil, then Liqui Moly Synthoil High Tech 5W40 and finally Millers EE Performance 5W40, witch is very good, IMO. Castrol leaves more sludge and deposit, which means it doesn't keep the engine clean enough. Liqui Moly is good, but a bit too thin (increased oil consumption). Millers has no such disadvantages. It's not cheap, but driving any "S" Audi you really shouldn't save money on oil.

The engine is not high performance enough to require any special oil. This is another example of shoddy German engineering. Used to work on German cars in late 90s… looks like they haven’t learned a thing since then.
And when you lose the not high performance engine to the cheap oil, will you change your mind?
