  • Another S4 B6/B7 content. I decided to film this video as advice if you are planning to buy one of these cars. Jordan brought us his S4 for just ''Chain replacement '' and after we removed the engine the job was almost canceled because of these issues ....Make sure you check the car properly before purchasing one and definitely have some spare funds to service it, on the end of the day it's still a 15-20 year old higher performance car.
    Thank you for watching!

    Very cool video. I have a 2005.5 B7 S4 Avant manual (US spec) and I paid 5,000 USD for it with 190,000 miles on the clock. It was in INFINITELY better condition than this one. Makes me really glad I found it when I did and purchased it. I had no history on timing chains but I figured for the miles on it when I bought it, it nearly certainly had to have been done. It still only rattles for about 2-3 seconds on a cold start and then quiets right up. Currently sitting at 226,000 miles and going strong. It burns a lot of oil at this point, but I'm sure the valves seals and piston rings are tired. I did do all the thermostat and water pump housing and o-rings, valley pan gasket, oil filter housing o-rings and oil cooler o-rings a year ago. Overall it's been one of the most enjoyable cars I've ever driven. It's not fast but it sounds fantastic with catless downpipes and a full Magnaflow resonated RS4 exhaust. Glad to see you guys keeping these old beasts on the road. They are a treat to drive.

    • @badassbikerst
      @badassbikerst Год назад +5

      If it rattles for a few seconds on crank, then it's the oil check valves. They're under the intake manifold, it's an hr long job.
      Basically what they do is keep oil pressure/tension on the chain guides. When one goes out, there's no pressure on the tensioners so there's chain slap on startup.
      They're cheap, I replaced mine when I put the ported manifold on. Most of the time it's their fault that causes the guides and tensioners to fail since everything is loose and dry on startup.

Like check valves, leaking oil filter housing seals, leaking power steering return hose, valve cover seals, intake manifold flapper noise, external radiators leakage, a/c unit bearing and so on and so on. It can be a pain in the ass sometimes but you forget it all if you are driving it with a big smile on your face, realy nice cars.

    On mine with 108k miles, replacing the front cv shafts, the upper suspension links were extremely hard to get off because of age, wear and tear, etc. The a/c went out at around 100k miles, and to replace it you have to remove the entire front end and try for hours to break the shaft loose from the compressor without turning the shaft. Absolute dream to drive, requires a decent amount of maintenance even if you get lucky with timing chains. With that said fixing things is pretty straight forward and only takes about a day for the bigger projects like the a/c and valley pan oil gasket.

    • @joevarga5982
      @joevarga5982 5 месяцев назад

      BS. You can't change an A/C compressor out in a day unless you've done it many times before. Same with replacing the radiator or even just replacing the serpentine belt.

    Miss my B7 S4 sometimes, but then I remember how bad it leaked steering fluid and oil and any time I took it to the shop it was >$1k for anything. And also getting 12 mpg in the city with gas prices where they are now was no fun. My experience with the B7 was like having a super hot but very toxic girlfriend. Sex is great, but all other times you hate her. They’re so much fun to drive and sound so good but it was a stressful experience turning the car on every day, who knows if it started making a new sound that would cost me a couple grand.

    One other thing to look out for is the tailgate on the Avant. The struts can be pulled from the bodywork or be bending the bodywork before they fail. As the old saying goes.. "It's not the buying a car like this that's the issue, it's the running and maintaining of them that's the problem".. My B7 RS4 is on 136000 miles now, got it 9 years ago with 89000 on it, in my ownership i've changed the oil and filter approx every 3000 miles... as far as i know still on original clutch and timing chains.. no noise or issues with either.. so far. Apart from wear and tear items the most expensive part to replace was the oil cooler and lines. Brakes, suspension, suspension arms have all been done by myself, but i wouldn't even have a go at the timing chains on one of these... I take my hat off to you sir.

    • @joevarga5982

      There's no need to change oil every 3,000 miles with synthetic oil. Audi recommends 10,000 and I've been doing that in my S4 for the past 150,000 miles without issue. I've never even had to touch the original chains/guided/tensioners.

    Thank you for the EXCELLENT VIDEO! Having had THREE B6 S4s (still have one), this video pretty much sums up my experience in a nutshell. The money I spent on these out-of-warranty cars was horrendou$$$$$: one engine swap, too many suspension parts to count, oil leaks, steering pumps, etc etc. (The first two had some chain noise but I didn't even get to that.) And to fix the last B6 S4 I still have--an '05 Avant from the northern US--will require an engine pull to replace the cracked performance headers. Why are they cracked? Because the car was too low. But why bother doing any of that when the car has visible rust. I'm sad because I can't drive it and it's a mechanic's special now :(

    One little thing to add to the b6 buyers guide. The headlight back caps are incredibly fragile and can crack apart just from sitting. This lets water into the headlight causing electrical faults. The 4.2 is a good motor, but the cooling parts and small mechanics go wrong and break often, very expensive upkeep. Owned one and spent thousands

    Great video thank you. I want to ask about suspension kit, is Lemforder the best? There are other brands available for half the price is it worth it? Or what would you recommend?

    That moment the VAG group implemented those foamy supports inside the front fender/wing wells, they made a huge mistake. Collects all the moisture and dirt and thats why they all rust on the top part of the fenders.

    I picked up a B6 A4 v6 convertible for 450 bucks and am in the process of doing the work on her .. engine and suspension are done, exhaust and transmission range sensor and fuel filters are next up. Get them cheap and do your own work.

    here in the states a good condition 4.2 s4 than NEEDS the timing chains go for around 4,5,6k+. The ones that are in good condition and have the chains done are around 9,10,11,12+. I'd like to get one eventually before they are all rotted.

    Wow! This makes my b5 S4 look reliable 🤣🤣🤣. Im happy i saw this video. Ill know to stay clear of it. I was thinking this was more reliable then the B5 s4. But i see now its even worse. I always liked the idea of having a awd manual V8. But Audis V8 is not reliable and is very thirsty. Though i heard the b7 rs4 v8 is better? Id love to LS, coyote, or sbf swap one.
    Your way better off getting a 2.0 turbo, putting rods and pistons and big turbo. You will make more power, cheaper to maintain, and better mpg.
    Im just finding your channel. Do you do any b5 s4 work? I do all the work on my b5 s4. Just did the rack and pinion for the 3rd time, lol. Im sure the b6 and b7 have the rack issue to, and maybe even the window regulator issues too.

    Yesterday i went to test drive a 2006 Audi S4 cabriolet. 6 speed manual. The car was fun, and that engine sounds amazing even with stock exhaust, but I didn't like how dry and stiff the leather was on the seats, the clutch was softer than I expected for a 340hp car, shifting into first and second gear felt SUPER stiff, while shifting 3rd gear felt way too soft. When I first went from 2nd to 3rd i pushed the shifter HARD into third because I thought I missed the shift when in reality the gear selector slot for 3rd was just WAY too soft.
    The other thing I didn't like about it was how I'm 5'7" and the driver seat was snug even for me. My first car, a 1991 Mazda RX7 convertible, felt roomier inside than this Audi. It's too heavy for how small the car actually is.

    This is certainly a film which proves the point 'buy on condition'.

    I bought passat 3.2 for 3.5k Euro. Redid the whole car with many things that were not due. I also upgraded it almost entirely as R36 and the car swallowed more than 10k euro.

    The 4.2 is amazing, it's one of the last v8 awd audis you can own unless you have supercar money for an rs7 and the 4.0tt.
    Mostly it's the powersteering hoses to the powersteering cooler or miscellaneous coolant hoses cracking and failing.
    The timing chain job sucks, unless you have a solid weekend to do it yourself with 2k of parts or 6-8k at a garage, or find a car with it already done.
    With catless downpipes and a fast intentions non-resonated exhaust, it's exotic sounding, like the old 4.2 audi r8s. Now add a ported intake manifold and a jackal motorsports stg 2 tune and you're at almost 400 to all 4 wheels.
    I love mine, but it's like dating a super model or a stripper, the sex is amazing but she's toxic and expensive, everyone wants her but only you know about the problems you have to deal with.
