I’ve had a B8.5 S4 for a year and a half and hasn’t cost me crazy numbers in maintenance unlike my BMW.....been pretty reliable. Only MAJOR concern would be the timing chain but that’s hit or miss, from my understanding.
I own a b8.5 and I can say it's been a joy. The B8's have insane bang for buck tuning. You can get 80+ hp on a simple ECU tune with stock internals, bringing the car from 333 hp to around 420 hp.
It's always entertaining to see the younger generations talk about the S4 as they often think the B5 S4 was the first S4 or the only S4 that had tons of tuning options. In reality, the 20V turbo 5 had and still has tons of tuning potential. The C4 S4 had tons of tuning options before the B5 was even released.... just as the 5000 turbo quattros and UrQuattros did before the C4 S4. You also mentioned that the C4 S4 was an E30 M3 competitor which is not the case. When it was released, the C4 S4 was aligned against the BMW M5 and Mercedes 500 E in terms of size and luxury sedan performance. Naturally, the S4 was less powerful but it was also much less expensive. They sold out quickly at dealerships and even in 1995 you'd often have to have your name on a waiting list and put down an immediate deposit if a C4 S4 came in on trade... we missed at least 4 or 5 cars that sold in the same day before we finally found one to put a deposit on in July of 1995. I'd also go as far to say that the C4 S4 (when properly treated and maintained) is easily one of the most reliable Audis ever built. We have owned 5 of them now and three of them for more than 15 years. Only 3 flat bed incidents for all those cars since 1995. (Failed fuel pump, failed clutch slave and broken coolant fitting). As far as performance potential is concerned, one needs only to search for "Jeff Gerner UrS4 speed record" to get a rough idea. The timing chain issues on the B6 cars are a lot like the IMS bearing issues on the 996 Porsches. girlfriend's older brother had one of these... twin Ko4 turbos.. 450hp Said something ALWAYS breaks weekly when you least expect it. Costs way too much on maintenance it's a suicidal engine. but was it good when it was working? Hell yes
Hard to find, but my pick is the C4 S4. I have a Avant with 6spd box. 5 pot 20v turbo factory wastegate (vented) nothing is that much fun for so little money. 275000km and solid as a rock ;)
I've had my B9 for about 6 months now, the car is amazing. The ability to go from limo mode to sport with a few button presses truly changes the entire dynamic of the vehicle. The interior is still I think one of the best on the market period, and the practicality makes it a great daily.

That's because it is S6, naming scheme was changed later, when A4 and A6 etc were released. Correct models in that video should have been 80-series B4 S2/RS2.
come home and i c this, turned my frown upside down! thnx for listening! my dad used to have a b8 with the 3.0L Supercharged and I absolutely loved everything about it. BEST. CAR. EVER.
B5 owner here. It’s a beautiful machine, but seriously... be willing to drop cash on maintenance. More than that, make sure you get it looked at. Head cover gaskets are a common issue on these things. Look for signs of a water pump needing to be replaced, etc. all that said, if you have cash, go for it! They’re marvelous!
I bought a black B8.5 (2016) S4 Prestige with 8,000 miles and some bad damage to the two side doors - in 2016 for 40,000 even. my father in law owns a body shop so the doors were done first - so the Car was mint. I changed out the rims next. 19" black tri spoke OEMs. Then I went tunes - eventually to Stage 3 + (intake and pulleys). I upgraded to the ECS heat exchanger and also the redtop coil packs, and Stage 2 on the DSG trans. The Map i have now is 492 HP 440 TQ. This car is a MONSTER. The supercharger SCREAMS and roars. people turn their head from a block away, no joke. so glad i did the ECS carbon fiber intake - expensive but beautiful. I got about $10k in upgrades on a car i pay $550 a month on. it will be paid off in 2 years with less than 50k on it. this thing is unique and nothing on the road sounds like it. it is truly a dream car. Dont hesitate. 12,500 miles on the tunes and no trouble at all. bulletproof engine if you ask me.
I once worked on an Audi A4 B5 V6 back in 2010. The car leaked oil out of every single gasket and seal, and all that oil destroyed ever rubber bushing under the hood of that car. 6:40 Car companies became fans of the dual clutch transmission. They eliminated much of the horsepower loss of conventional automatics and shifted gears faster than a really good manual. When manufacturers wanted to show good 0-60 times and 1/4 mile times, they often used the DCT version. I will buy an Evo X MR someday. I keep thinking about when a Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo video will arrive, even though my interest in the 300ZXTT declined once rally cars were sold in the USA.
I've had my b5 for 10 years and it's been my daily that entire time. We have a love hate relationship, but I still prefer the stiff hydraulic feel of older cars.. that and refreshing control arm bushings with every oil change
Supreme Pribs question! My MZ3 has FBO plus E85 as well. What big turbo did you have? Was debating upgrading to like a BNR S4. Not sure if it’s worth it.
@@geedunk13 I had a gtx2867r on it for awhile and then was thinking about the bnr s3 when it came out but decided to sell it for a newer truck and bought that yellow srt4 I had which I put a zeta 3 turbo on that lol. You'll notice a difference I mean you can feel a 20hp difference yet alone 100 ha
For anyone curious, I own an e46 m3 and a b8.5 s4. They are both great but should not be compared. The e46 is quicker and more fun to drive, but I can only drive it 4-5 months of the year where the b8.5 blows the interior game out of the water and is fun to drive all year. As far as performance, its like apples and oranges. Still BMW gang tho
I have a B6 S4. And yeah, they're issue prone. But they sure are fun. Besides the timing chains/guides, you need to make sure the problematic cam adjusters were done during that service. A lot of people skip out on them because of the cost, but they WILL fail, and you'll have to pull the motor again. I'm speaking from experience here...
I had a B5 S4 for a long time before I stepped up to the B6 S4. The B5 was nearly new and under warranty so I had a pretty good run with it until I had to replace the timing belt six months out of warranty, $$$. All my B6s--two sedans and one Avant--were crazy fun but expensive maintenance nightmares. They are not for the light of wallet. (And it's why the Avant is stilling sitting in my driveway with cracked headers; replacing those requires an engine pull!)
I love my b6 avant (04') pretty rare apparently. If you get the timing chain issue fixed and do the upgrades while the motor is out you'll be fine. The 4.2 v8 is one of the most reliable v8s ever made according to Top Gear. It's a fantastic car. Take care of it, care about it. Working on it isn't as hard as most people say. Changing the oil is as easy as any other car, easier than my BMW roadster.
C5 is underrated.. only weighs 400 pounds more and it's very aero dynamic.. Audi was going after the the 5 series BMW so they put alot into the c5.. I own a stage 2 c5 I love the car so much.....
@@FitmentIndustries Absolutley nothing mod wise. Just a cat back exhaust. I've stayed on top of transmission services and put good oil in it. Im religious about suspension upkeep. Outside of that, its been a great car. Im sure different people have different experiences though.
Owned a B7 myself. Didn't even make it to the timing chain blowing up. 88k, numerous electrical gremlins, coil packs blowing numerous times a year, etc. I'm glad I owned it, it was fun, but something about saying a prayer every time you turn the key not to throw a CEL was a bit stressful.
Have a B5 A4 Avant with the 2.8 v6. If you don't do anything stupid and do the maintenance on them, they will last forever, and still has a good exhaust note since it's the same V6 as the S4 without turbos. Mine it currently at 246k miles on the original drivetrain.
Don't want one, I already have one. And you guessed right, it's in the shop, because I wanted an entirely rebuilt and reinforced engine with way more power than stock! If it breaks I have my A3 8L 1.8TSQ as a backup. Most reliable car I've ever owned!
I bought a 1 owner b5 S4 a few weeks ago and loving it so far. However the maintenance that was needed (17 year old car) has been costly. But the one I found is a 9.5/10 condition so I couldn’t pass it up
My ride: 2001 B5 S4, K04, large intercoolers with carbon fiber ducts, stage 3 GIAC custom tune, 6 speed with FX400 clutch masters unit. JHM shifter, Stasis Street Sport coil overs. Alcon brakes up front. Great grocery getter. 3rd gear is silly quick.
B5 for life!! I've had 4 b5 s4s. 2 were stage 3 and they're awesome. If you cant turn a wrench, look elsewhere you may end up modding then selling when you realize how much stuff there is.
You have to take off the entire front end.... In Audi's defense, service position only take about 15 mins when you know what you're doing lol. I find it to be my favorite part of the job 😁😁😁
When I was shopping for a new car in '06 the S4 was the first thing I drove. Somewhere in the back of my mind I thought it would drive like the UR. It didn't. Didn't feel totally connected to the driver. The reliability also scared the craps out of me. Left the Audi store disappointed. Drove the RS4 sometime later. Loved the motor. That's about it. Really wish folks had a chance to drive the original Audi Coupe. It was a fantastic car to pilot and a polar opposite of what Audi turned into.
I had a 2000 s4. Never had any issues. 108000 miles. Then I picked up my b6 s4 I did do the timing chains in my garage at 134000 miles. Ended up with full headers and exhaust with Jim tune and loved that car till 168xxx miles. Then I found my current car. c5 rs6. Even with the quirks of the Audi family... I still love my Audi’s,
If you own any German car over 8 years of age, you need to know how to turn a wrench. Having a car payment and needing to do repairs at the same time isn't fun, especially if its your daily driver. Our 98 C43 is a bit more reliable than our 2 B5's, but we love them all equally.
I have a 2008 S4, Silver with the black and grey micro-fiber interior. It is in nearly new condition and is a dreamboat to drive. Not the quickest car, but certainly not slow. It will hit the electronic cut off at 165 mph and do well over 170 if disabled in stock form. Driving it makes you feel special, even if you're just going to work. I love my S4, and the B7 is my favorite style.
See people give the B5 a bad rep for reliability. But in the 1.5 years I've owned it all I have had to replace is: Both egt sensors Both lambda sensors Both turbos Both intercoolers Diverted valves F hose (twice) Tbb (twice) Inlet manifold gasket Injectors Fuel pump Brakes all round (new calipers upfront) N75 valve 1 way valves Suspension all round Control arms all round Engine mounts clutch and flywheel New radiator New secondary and primary water pump Spider hose Gearbox seal where it connects at the prop valve cover gaskets New alloys New aircon lines Fuel filter Not alot really. Works out at just £944 a month. *help me*
damn so 80% of the internet says MONEY PIT & the other 20% says “I love my daily s4 best car in the world just find one that’s been perfectly taken care of with low miles that hasn’t been fucked with or modded out already” 🙃
@@jonathanvillalba3214 No. The tunes are written on the stock ECU and replace the stock parameters for many variables, ultimately gaining control of factors like AFR, boost, timing and so on. For whatever reason(s), the current 3.0T (B9S4, Q8, etc) has taken quite a while to develop compared to other platforms.
On my second S4 B8 the engines are incredible and so much fun to drive. 2011 and now 2014. The coolant systems/water pump are the major issues you need to watch for and replace as you get close to 100K miles
Also the 100 is the predecessor to the A6. My dad had one of the first A6s in my country and they did look quite alike. One of the things that made them 100s was the headrests that had a whole in them. If it was a solid headrest then chances are it was a A6. P.s. but i love autos :(

After working on a Mégane, then a Yaris the difference for the home mechanic is night and day, a cam change is relatively easy,,,,,, until you have to remove the front end. When you have all the gear yes, removing the front end is easy, but on a sloped half gravel half slab drive way,,,,,,, na forget it!!!!!
2.7 biturbo is the perfect engine. Just put rs6 turbos, downpipes, 550cc bosch, rs4 afm, intercooler or even better wmi and a good program-and you have 500+hp. Very sad that this engine never been paired with 8HP or DL501 transmissions. In my opinion, 3.0 compressor is the shit compare to the 2.7 bt.
I thought about getting a B7 S4, but largely because of the timing chain woes, and 50/50 vs 60/40 torque split I opted for an RS4 instead, and obviously the fact that it's an S4 turned up to 11. Cost me twice as much though for not twice as fast.
First of all bad info bud, the AWD system isn't the same from the c4 to the b5... Even the TT AWD isn't the same. Secondly, from someone that's owned 4 b5 s4's I'd say it's definitely how well kept it is for dependability but as long as you do the regular maintenance you are completely fine. Maybe it's because I work on my own cars but the b5 S4 get a bad rap from people that don't know them inside and out or don't learn them, because it's been one of the best reliable cars I've ever had even at a RS4 Ko4s upgrade. Personal experience vs people that are lazy or share rumors.

I baby it 98 percent of the time. Make sure you get someone who is extremely knowledgeable and good to tune it. Also Whenever something comes up I fix it asap.
This is not a car for someone who doesn’t maintain there car. If you want something, that you can drive while thr check engine light is on then buy a civic.
girlfriend's older brother had one of these... twin Ko4 turbos.. 450hp
Said something ALWAYS breaks weekly when you least expect it. Costs way too much on maintenance it's a suicidal engine.
but was it good when it was working? Hell yes
Depends on the order of maintenance or modding. If you do maintenance items before your mods you'll have a much better experience.

I've had my B9 for about 6 months now, the car is amazing. The ability to go from limo mode to sport with a few button presses truly changes the entire dynamic of the vehicle.
The interior is still I think one of the best on the market period, and the practicality makes it a great daily.
how is it doing now? any problems? 👀
@@cesarramirez-wp2go Literally nothing, some flat tires but nothing with the car itself. Coming up on 2.5 years of daily driving and 24,000 miles. COVID really cut my driving down.

Kinda digs at me that you didn’t get into the C4 chassis more. By far one of the best builds audi built but didn’t sell well.
That's because it is S6, naming scheme was changed later, when A4 and A6 etc were released. Correct models in that video should have been 80-series B4 S2/RS2.
I'm just gonna say RS4 B5 and leave it there

B5 owner here. It’s a beautiful machine, but seriously... be willing to drop cash on maintenance. More than that, make sure you get it looked at. Head cover gaskets are a common issue on these things. Look for signs of a water pump needing to be replaced, etc. all that said, if you have cash, go for it! They’re marvelous!
I have a S7. Turbos blew, and got it covered under Audi. Knew what I was getting into, still love it.

@@geedunk13 I had a gtx2867r on it for awhile and then was thinking about the bnr s3 when it came out but decided to sell it for a newer truck and bought that yellow srt4 I had which I put a zeta 3 turbo on that lol.

Yea, that would be fun.
I own a stage 2 c5 I love the car so much.....
i have a B5S4 and love it! while temperamental at times nothing compares to when it has no issues and ripping down the road.
I'm a big BMW and porsche fan but I've always loved the B5 S4 and especially the B5 RS4. And Audi's aan 5cyl turbo is a work of art. Urs4 :)

So you want an Audi A4
A4 with a 1.8t is a solid car. Grab a 98 and you get the micro mirror on the passenger side.
Have a B5 A4 Avant with the 2.8 v6. If you don't do anything stupid and do the maintenance on them, they will last forever, and still has a good exhaust note since it's the same V6 as the S4 without turbos. Mine it currently at 246k miles on the original drivetrain.
I think b6 s4 looks nice and if you can get one with timing chain replaced, I think there are nice!!
Don't want one, I already have one. And you guessed right, it's in the shop, because I wanted an entirely rebuilt and reinforced engine with way more power than stock! If it breaks I have my A3 8L 1.8TSQ as a backup. Most reliable car I've ever owned!

You have to take off the entire front end.... In Audi's defense, service position only take about 15 mins when you know what you're doing lol. I find it to be my favorite part of the job 😁😁😁
B6 has been beating my butt with the prices and I’ve owned it for about a year now beautiful and fast but not reliable

Also the 100 is the predecessor to the A6. My dad had one of the first A6s in my country and they did look quite alike. One of the things that made them 100s was the headrests that had a whole in them. If it was a solid headrest then chances are it was a A6.

Hey! Thanks for using my video in the beginning it caught me super off guard! And yeah...car is down...again :D
I thought about getting a B7 S4, but largely because of the timing chain woes, and 50/50 vs 60/40 torque split I opted for an RS4 instead, and obviously the fact that it's an S4 turned up to 11. Cost me twice as much though for not twice as fast.

I love my B9...good daily ride and enough power to make you smile.
Jeroen $30k over 3 years? How much of that was spent on maintenance if you dont mind? Like $10k?
