The Complete Guide to Farming Mastery in Stardew Valley

- With mastery comes many more things to talk about, and more charts to make! Farming mastery specifically introduces the iridium scythe, the statue of blessings, and golden animal crackers! All in all, this is a pretty useful mastery that makes some of the best money making methods in the game even BETTER, so it's worth considering!
Small list of corrections:
- The Botanist profession does work with the iridium scythe, however, the gatherer profession (50% chance for a double harvest) doesn't.
- That profit for pigs on the chart is from selling truffle oil with the artisan profession, which does in fact sell for more than iridium truffles. You do still need the Gatherer profession for the 50% chance of a double truffle.
If you missed the introduction to the Mastery System, you can watch it here: • A Quick Mastery Guide ...

Couple of corrections:
- Truffle Oil with the artisan profession does sell for more than an iridium truffle, the profit calculation on the chart takes that into account, I was just wrong when I said sell the truffles
- If you have the artifact book that allows you to sell artifacts for 3x price, and sell Dino Eggs instead of Dino Mayo, you'll get 550g/day at full friendship with the coopmaster profession.
- I'll test this further, but apparently the Botanist profession does work with the scythe. Not sure why it didn't when I did it, could be a bug.
Thanks for the addendum. I thought I was crazy cause I know all my wild seeds have been no different due to the scythe.
Thank you for correcting truffle oil. I’ve seen way too many people say iridium truffles sell for more than truffle oil when that’s just not true. However it is true if you don’t have the artisan profession.
Another slight correction, Iridium scythe works on Salmonberry/Blackberry bushes as well as spring onions.
Okay, thought I was going crazy when I heard "iridium quality truffles are worth more than Truffle Oil with Artisan profession", glad to know I wasn't throwing away money all this time
1:00 it wasn't an 8x8 field of starfruit (i think it was 12x12).
2:54 you calculated how to get 333 fiber, not 999. You need 182 fiber seeds with the 5.5 fiber drop rate.
I wanna point out that there's now a special book you can find or buy which triples the sell price of all artifacts, and since dinosaur eggs qualify as artifacts, turning a dinosaur egg into mayonnaise is actually giving you LESS money than if you just sold the egg itself (unless you have normal quality egg and artisan profession)

"don't pet your ducks"
DO NOT LISTEN TO THIS MAN, ALWAYS PET DUCKS. If you see a duck, pet it. Cherish the ducks.
duck goes QUACK!
With blessing of the waters it becomes very easy to get a perfect catch on lava eels. With challenge bait, you can quickly get 9 iridium lava eels from the volcano caldera. With Artisan and Angler, smoked lava eels sell for 5880 each.
Thanks for sharing these details... Blessing of Waters immediately had me thinking of this plan but haven't had a chance to test it.
I was so happy to have the Iridium Scythe. At first it better blends in with all the other Iridium items, but the harvesting is just such a blessing on its own.
Can you harvest regrowing plants like bluebarry or strawbarry withouth braking them
@@mahmuter9019 yes
@@mahmuter9019 Yes, you can. The plants will not get damaged.
@@hannes8835 thanks lad
10:00 iridium quality truffles sell for 1250 and truffle oil with artisan profession sells for 1491 so you're still better off turning them into oil
Yup, the calculation for money per day is right, I was just wrong when saying to not use oil
@@salmence100Well, not so wrong, what a waste of space and resources lol. I do most of my truffles but if I knew how little it gave I'd have saved my hardwood.
If you play with the automate mod it's def worth the bother but agree that ymmv
I still sell the truffle itself, only the truffle crab drop gets turned into oil. Even though I use automate.
so is it worth it taking the botanist profession than? if you turn them into oil with artisan anyways?
The friendship buff is roughly equivilant to giving a regular quality liked gift on top of the regular talking to them
This serves as a good argument in favor of a balanced attack to skillbuilding in the earlygame so that all the benefits don't get completely wasted. The statue confers more benefit when you're not _just_ in that lategame final money push for perfection.
For sure, the issue is I'm more into the mines and Skull Cavern than most people are, and my last skill was still combat. I'm thinking majority of players will unlock it later in year 2
The statue is just a huge waste of moss, regardless if when you get it.
I just got my mom to try this game. She is hooked. But is year 2 summer and still 30% community center and like level 25 mines. These statue buffs will help her so much.
Yes she needs better items and to find stardrops, but these things will help her so much.
@@salmence100 funny, I don't do a lot of combat but I picked it first because trinkets are random drops. Considering that the trinkets are not only random drops, but of variable quality I think the sooner you get into gathering them the better.
Though for the trinket I'm using, it doesn't matter. Basilisk Paw doesn't have any variable stats.
@@salmence100 my absolute last late limping level 10 skill was combat, too. I still stress out when I know I have to go somewhere and do some combat. that's why my forge isn't unlocked. I made it there, all sweaty, but forgot to unlock it. :(
Actually you could do trellised plants 4 rows thick. Since the scythe hits two rows, you'd be able to hit all rows from either side.
Blessing of water is insane if you save your legendary fish catches for days when you have it. I perfected Angler today, and I am mediocre at fishing at best. It was like catching a chub.
It's also INCREDIBLY clutch with challenge bait. 9 iridium lava eels in one day is excellent, especially if you smoke them
Ostrich Eggs keep the quality of the egg used so 2 iridium quality ostrich eggs would go to 1824g/d with the Coopmaster profession (2 eggs every 5 days, made to 20*456g [rancher]),
Dinosaur eggs sell for triple the cost with the Treasure Appraisal Guide, so 1 Dinosaur can produce 600g daily for Iridium unprocessed eggs.
The ostrich calculation in the video is correct, they lay an egg every 7 days, not 5
Mayo price, 266
account for quality, x1.849 (accidentally used the coopmaster buff, oh well)
amount of mayo, x20
divide by days, /7
= 1405
I genuinely didn't realise that the butterfly was not supposed to give a guarantied primatic shard. I got it 4 times and 3 out of those I got a primatic shard and once I didn't find it. I kinda assumed it's a fair trade for a more or less wasted day of just running around.
I rushed mastery in year 1. Had them all before the end of winter. The blessings help in that case. I agree that the scythe was the best bonus for farming.
You got ALL masteries in year one??? I'm at year 3 in my 1.6 update and I only have 3 masteries
I had the desert unlocked the day before the festival year 1. I used those three day to rush combat and mining. The hardest was farming. I had to rush animals for that one. I usually spend the first week or two fishing to get a ton of money fast.
Fake
@@misterguitarpaca9396It is pretty possible. On my last safe i got the last mastery in winter y1 or spring y2, and i was not in the desert till late spring y1. On my current playthrough i got to the first desert festival with some good money to spare, and was able to purchase like 6 foraging books while there. Only farming is really lacking behind, but that should catch up plenty fine in summer, and i'm way ahead on foraging which was the main bottleneck on my last playthrough.
@@misterguitarpaca9396 Nope. I made a targeted plan and followed it through. I did have some really lucky RNG though.
The statue's blessing of energy is a neat workaround for a "no energy spent" challenge run
The infinite energy came in clutch for a robins resource rush. I had a huge forrest and had just upgraded ny ax to iridium. Not like i couldnt have done with without infinite energy but it was nice.
About the numbers: One thing to add is that pigs need more space than all other animals. Based on your design choices you may use way less room and make 2-3 Barns with sheep in place of 1 pig barn. If we are talking pure profit one could close the barn doors and fit 69 of them on the standard farm.
The fact that the iridium scythe does enough damage to deal with green slimes is enough that I no longer need to stash a weapon in a chest just outside the Secret Woods and then remember to put it back when I'm done. For my playstyle, this makes it actually significantly more practical than you make it out to be!
1:20 The profession still takes effect for me(idk about the chance to double harvest, but it gives iridium quality 100% of the time)
"Spawns a prismatic butterfy."
Me, a Terraria player: 😰
it would be pretty fun if catching a prismatic butterfly after dark summoned a boss, and we already have Terraria references in SV. though i can't think of a way to alert the player aside from the ones they ignore (like lost books or TV channels)
I've found that the iridium scythe can harvest 3 plants, but only towards the north direction. You can plant trellis crops 5 rows thick horizontally, or 4 vertically.
actually the iridium scythe can also harvest from berry bushes too!
OMG WHAT
But you can also do that with a golden scythe.
@@dheerajs.a3227 OMG WAT
@@dheerajs.a3227 I tested that and it did not work for me :(
@@dheerajs.a3227 really! is it any faster/different from just shaking them?
I’ve been looking forward to your vid on mastery, great content as always
Really appreciate the time, effort, and thought you put into these videos. Thank you!
About sheep (and other animals that benefit from Shepard or coopmaster)
You can swap professions for a day to sell the cloth for 20% more profit which if you have enough cloth will be over 20k the cost to
You need 213 cloth for swapping to artisan to be better if you don’t take into account other money makers like wine that’s just under 5 days for 1 barn of sheep
One thing to note!
Dinosaur mayonnaise is actually not that good, if the Dinosaur egg quality is higher than normal, you lose profit. But an iridium quality Dinosaur egg with the Treasure Appraisal buff (x 3 prices of artifacts) will sell for way more than Dinosaur Mayonnaise with the Artisan profession. So, if you have max hearts with the Dinosaur, with a Golden Animal Cracker then yeah you will be gaining :D
I noticed that will I was playing through soo yeah
So glad to have your guides for 1.6! They’re the best
thank you for making these videos! they help me so much in my play throughs
One thing that really pisses me off is that it almost always without fail, rains on the days when it's time to harvest, and that can throw your whole month off if you leave the crops one day for those hydrophobic Junimo twerps.
If you give junimos raisins, they will also harvest all scythe crops as well.
I would argue the statue of blessings is well-balanced for the point at which you unlock it - it's not going to revolutionize your game, but it's still worth having. And it can really make a difference in the right situations - a blessing of friendship on a festival day can be a huge boost to your relationships with the villagers, and a fangs or luck blessing can make all the difference in a skull cavern run. Even blessing of waters has a niche - it made a tremendous difference when I was going for SVE's gemfish.
Nah, it's pretty underwhelming, it would have been better if you got to choose between two like with the dwarf statue. The only really useful blessing at that point in the game is the speed buff, and arguably the luck boost, the rest are too situational or useless at that point. The prismatic butterfly is woefully underwhelming, that's just chump-change at that point, infinitite energy likewise. Similar to how golden eggs for achieving perfection are also worthless. There are a lot of those cases where they would have been awesome early game, good to have in mid-game, but because you get them late game they're worthless, like the treasure totem for instance. There is definitely way too much locked behind late game.
agreed. I've been at max 10 for a couple of years; console hasn't update yet; I keep skipping the update request, because I don't know if it's 1.6 or what...and Im trying to finish a few things first. Anyway, I only did the cavern once or twice, it's SO hard, but if I had the fangs blessing would be much more confident going in. Same with water blessing. I'm at 10, but rarely fish. anytime I hook special fish, I lose them. I am "late" in game, but still need these assists! but I do agree with the person below that I wish we coud've chosen between two each day.
YESS I'm so excited for this series and all them spread sheets!!
You're the GOAT! Great guide, thank you sir!!
I’m so excited for the rest of the video set 🥰
I really enjoy having a dinosaur coop. Once you get the Treasure Appraisal book, a full dinosaur coop paired with an autograbber is such easy passive money. Would be better if you have an autopetter. I just check on them once a week, grab the eggs, sell them, and that's it.
Infinite energy is great for Qi's Hungry Challenge if you don't have the soul sapper ring yet!
For pure profit sheeps could be considered the best animal now.
Sheeps produce 2073 g/day and a Big barn holds 12 animals while using 28 tiles on the farm. 7 extra tiles in front of it so you can reach the entrance. 35/12 tiles, so around 3 tiles at minimum per sheep on the farm resulting in 711 gold per day and tile (also much more than aged and non aged starfruit or ancient fruit wine).
A pig produces on average 3 truffles per sunny not winter day with a profit of 3*1491gold (artisan truffle oil). There are 84 out of 112 non winter days and on average there are 14 rainy days per year. So a pig has a daily profit of 4473*70/112 = 2796 gold/day.
A pig also uses at least 3 tiles but to produce 3 truffles per day all 12 pigs in one barn have to stay most of the time of the day on an unoccupied tile. So they need much more space than sheeps. Even with 3*12=36 tiles outside of one barn (so 64 tiles / 12 pigs = 5.33.. tiles/pig) a pig would make less money than a sheep per day and tile (524 g/day&tile) but a pig needs much more space than that to really produce 3 truffles on average, especially if you whish to collect the truffle not every single day while the sheeps get their wool collected by autograbbers without any losses.
And finally for multiplayer you can get the Shepherd and the Artisan profession at once with two players, so sheeps get an extra 1.4 multiplier to their profit (2903g/day or 995 g/day&tile).
Tldr;
There are many benefits of sheeps. They need less space, their produce is easy to collect, they produce every day in the year and the amount is pretty constant and reliable compared to pigs. Most people won't maximize the tile use on the farm but even then are sheeps probably better in most cases compared to pigs. More comfortable and often more profitable.
Redeeming the statue somewhat, I tend to mostly ignore friendship except for sashimi until year 2. That's about when I get the statue, too.
The speed buff is quite nice for mines and running around on errands, too.
I got the masteries kinda early so the blessings helped a bit
😄Your voice is very nice to listen to.... I'm charmed
Could you do a video on all the other mastery's? This video turned out great.
New Sal vid yay! 🎉
9:33 I got a bit confused with you saying "wool" and the chart showing "fabric" 😅 but thats just my adhd brain pranking me as usual, specially when math is involved . Thanks for another great video and chart!
I dont get the "too late into the game to matter" for the statue of blessing. I usually finish all of the skills before ginger island(around end of year one/mid spring year 2) and its really nice to have that extra luck/speed
3:51 I think it’s money and the chance for a prismatic shard- I only got the shard once, but it still gave me the money, too
I like the speed and luck buffs from the statue. The prismatic butterfly, however, I never seem to be able to find.
That thumbnail is gorgeous
a thing about dinosaur mayonnaise: with the new treasure appraisal book, it’s better to sell your dino eggs if they’re silver quality or higher and only turn regular quality dino eggs into mayo.
Wait, sap and fiber actually have a use now? Amazing!
I love your videos
8:24 i believe cows make more gold per day because, although goat cheese sells for more, goats produce milk every other day while cows do it daily.
I think the comment was more about the later game, more expensive animal that provides no unique benefits over cows making them objectively worse.
The best thing about goats is that you can harvest them half as often and use fewer cheese presses. But the extra costs of the goats can pay for presses and an autograbber.
One thing to note on the statue of blessings is that your first mastery isn't all that hard to get. I got it around the middle of spring 2 and probably would have gotten it in winter 1 if I'd bothered with fishing early on. While those buffs like infinite energy suck late game, they're actually pretty good in year 2 and can be quite helpful with earlier skull caverns runs (luck and crit), the y2 farn setup (infinite energy), and with the legendary fish as mentioned in the video.
I am playing my first playthrough of Stardew Valley and I unlocked the mastery cave at the end of the year 3. Reaching the mastery of any skill really late or early depends how much you know about the game spoilers. I didn't hurry my fighting skills because I kept constantly dying in the mines and losing money and items so I avoided combat.
Me still waiting for 1.6 on switch 😭
HOORAY‼️🎉
So, Not sad I choose Foraging first. IDK when I will pick up Farming... but I do want that Scythe!
If you have the treasure appraisal guide buff, the only time it's profitable to turn a dinosaur egg into mayonnaise is if the egg is normal quality, and that's taking into account the artisan profession. I don't know where or how to find out the chances for each quality of egg, but if I had to guess I'd say it averages out closer to 500g a day with the treasure appraisal guide.
Still wish he would update the coopmaster and shepherd professions to give another 20% - 30% to sell price of mayo for coopmaster and cheese for shepherd to mitigate the loss for not picking the artisan profession.
I agree, it's kinda silly that taking the crop skills path is better for most animals than the animal skill path
I find no issues harvesting on a controller. When you move to the right or left, you can harvest the row of crops you are currently on, as well as the row above and the row below.
harvest with scyth works on salmon berry and black berry bushes!
it does take the botanist profession to account
I'm curious what the artifact book does to daily profits from just selling dino eggs.
Farming life is good
if only farming was this easy irl
Hi there! Considering that Stardew Valley Expanded 2.0 is going to be released in the somewhat near (or not really near) future (I don't know when it'll get released), would you consider making another Stardew Valley Expanded playthrough after 2.0 releases? I enjoyed your last SVE playthrough, but much has changed in the recent update, and more stuff will change and/or get added leading to the 2.0 release.
Sheep as a shepherd has always been my favorite farm. Beach is good for that. I didn't even turn it into cloth, but he buffed that. Meh. They're still a very low maintenance. Money maker.
what game version are you on? for me the scythe works with botanist and i'm on the newest version.
IMPORTANT EDIT: so i snooped around the SDV discord and apparently Botanist does work with the scythe, it is forager (level 5 ability) that doesn't work with the Iridium scythe (the 20% chance to double produce)
You say mastery is very late game, but if someone is familiar with the game I think they can get the first mastery well in first year, I'd say about fall, you can get tons and tons of XP from blowing up the whole of skull cavern, I got the masteries one after the other with this. If you consider that,. it might not be late game for some people at all, especially if they choose farming mastery first.
If you have read the treasure appraisal book, only turn normal quality dino eggs into mayo & sell the higher quality eggs, you will make more money this way ❤
1:35 does it work on the ginger island crops? like ginger and taro root?
Thought it is a backend change, selecting the Farming mastery does change your Golden Mystery box loot table.
Have you got any Deluxe Worm Bin videos?
1:21 are you sure this is true? I’ve been planting wild winter seeds and have gotten iridium quality forage while using the iridium scythe. Maybe you meant the gatherer profession doesn’t work with the scythe?
That footage was taken while I had the botanist profession, and all of the forage I harvested were normal quality. It could be a bug under certain circumstances, but in all of my testing I wasn't able to get anything other than normal quality.
@@salmence100 Huh, I’ll have to check again myself. I’ve been working on getting a stack of most items with a few exceptions (I started before I even heard of TheAlGoreRhythm lol) and I remember finishing the winter forage in 1.6 while using the iridium scythe on wild seeds. Regardless, love your videos, keep up the amazing work ❤️
Maybe it's Winter forage? Or Ginger island vs farm? I also have harvested winter seeds with the iridium scythe & botanist profession and gotten all iridium quality.
More testing required!
@@LeanoraMcVittie I don’t see why it would be exclusive to winter forage when winter roots and snow yams are classified as forage, the crocus is a flower, and the crystal fruit is a fruit. Time for me to experiment on ginger island when I get home from work lol
@@LeanoraMcVittie I planted 10 of each kind of wild seed on ginger island and harvested with the iridium scythe, they were all iridium quality.
Farmer mastery best mastery.
Can you do a video about what profession skills work well with multiplayer? And if possible the mechanics of how they work in multiplayer? My wife and I play a lot of stardew valley together and sometimes it seems like the perks don't work like the shepherd profession doesn't allow us to harvest from the sheep everyday etc
And yes, I've made sure that we have Max friendship Max mood with the sheep
Last I checked, sell price buffs like Artisan and Angler will work for all players even if only one player has them. So I suppose you get compensated that way for the sheep thing.
You're doing something wrong somewhere. There's no major profession changes in multi-player
Is the prismatic butterfly a terraria crossover thing?
How does the Statue of Blessings work in multiplayer? Are all players affected by the same statue? Or do you need one per player?
Does the iridium scythe also work on naturally occurring ginger?
wait what, i swear i got iridium quality with botanist proffesion from harvesting wild seeds with iridium scythe 🤔
yep, i can confirm this
Yeah, me too.
As a console player iriduim sythe my prayers has been anwserd
What about selling dinosaur eggs as they’re worth 3x more after obtaining the artifact book?
550g/day at full friendship with the coopmaster profession
When will the next expanded episode come out
I know the wiki says it but the extra range on the golden and iridium scythe is a lie. They all have the same hit boxes when swung, you can viable see it's the same if you install a show hitbox mod. For why it's still incorrect on the wiki idk, but it used to say that the golden scythe had 2 tiles of extra reach over the regular one...
So you said if you build multiple Statue of Blessings they will only give the same buff, does that buff stack though? For example, can you get a huge boost to luck or spawn multiple prismastic butterflies? Or do they just overwrite each other and count as only one regular buff?
It overwrites it, just like eating food with buff while you already have a food buff
@@salmence100 I figured but was a teensy bit optimistic for potential cheesing. Great vid!
@@salmence100 I'm curious. If it was the blessing of waters, could it refresh if you activated a second statue after catching three fish, allowing for three more easier catches?
maybe the scythe harvests anything on tilled land, and that is why in clears onions and no other forage

Chickens are absolutely the way to go as far as money-making coop animals.
I just can’t ever find that dang butterfly!!!!
Poor Algo with the statue of blessings 😂
Technically you can plant the trellises 4 rows thick
you don't need a weapon to get hardwood from the secret woods bc the iridium scythe takes one hit at a green slime
Trellis crops can actually go 4 thick.
Something I have to know
Bees are an animal. Does this mean i could use the Animal cracker on a Bee House and get Double Honey every 4 days?
If so my 419 Fairy Rose Honey Farm on Ginger Island is going to be absolutely insane
10:53 the whole THANG.
I'm sorry but i really can't get my mind off it once i heard it😅
BABE WAKE UP SALMENCE POSTED
The fact you can make mayo with a dinosaur egg is wild. Imagine doing that in real life, should we ever find dinosaur eggs.
Wait why does the sturgeon fish pond say 12 fish?
bro mentioning mobile knowing we dont even have 1.6 yet 😭
The statue of blessings (and dwarf king to an extent) feels really odd and kind out of place. First of all, and this matters much less but it’s still worth note, there is no reference to a goddess anywhere in the game other then the statue. It’s obviously a harvest moon/story of seasons reference. But I can’t help but feel like it’s either a contradiction of the established world building or a new introduction that leaves massive holes in it.
That’s less important though then just how random it’s effects are. Most of them don’t effect farming at all, even remotely. If this “get a random power a day” thing is something CA wants they could at least actually effect the part of the game it connects to.
Perhaps the scythe and crackers are so good that they felt they didn’t need a third powerful thing. I do think that’s a fair argument. But even something funny and impractical like a fertilizer that makes junimos dance near your crops or something like that would be more fitting then like…some crit chance.
Cows are better than goats unless you age the goat cheese, which is well worth doing. Not as much money as ageing wine, but so much faster.
Why did you specify how much to plant for 333 fiber when the recipe needs 999?
ah got it mixed up with moss, triple that lol
Haboo golden scythe rant incoming
1:25
It also doesn't benefit from Gatherer. So, definitely don't use the Scythe for forage crops.
