Spiritual Abuse and how to identify it

  • Spiritual Abuse is quite an insidious form of coercive control as it is often carried out by a person in a position of 'moral or religious superiority', or someone the victims admire and look to for guidance and support. The abuse is often carried out whilst claiming to be either for the victim's 'own good', or for the greater good. It is sometimes referred to a Religious abuse, but is not exclusive to a religious setting or by religious people. Spiritual abuse can happen in relationships, families, the workplace, or the community. It can also happen in political or ideological movements and cults.
In this video Darren Magee outlines what spiritual abuse is and lists common signs and examples of it, as well as looking at the impact it can have on someone.

This has happened to me twice over the past 10 years. First my ex wife, who was later diagnosed as a psychopath and is grifting around now as a cult leader. The second was the pastor of a local congregation. Fortunately, I haven't lost my faith, but I have lost all trust in "religious" people and churches.

I felt the same way for a long time but to my shock I ended up being Catholic. I couldn’t deny the truth the theology contained. It was very hard to trust again. The priest was very understanding and just presented the truth kindly and let the chips fall where they may. I was very grateful for that. I get sick thinking how spiritual abuse almost kept me from the beauty and peace of the one true faith. I am so happy you haven’t lost the faith despite greedy humans. That’s what breaks my heart the most, when people lose their faith and love for Jesus because of human abuse. Very sad situation.

This was my ex for over a decade. His favorite saying to me,"im the one with theology background, im older than yoh and i will always know more than you", his twisting of Gods word for his self sick gain along with the psychological, sexual, physical and emotional abuse came to a halt once i finally told my father what was going on. Im thankful my father still lives who is a preacher still in his mid 70s. When he heard what happening, it was what i needed for me to learn the word for myself. Once this began to go forward, he left the state for a funeral and to also see his mistress he'd been sleeping with over a year( of course he didnt think i knew) i went to the courts and filed divorce. When he got back, he was totally in shock and the tablea begin to turn. He begin to freak out because he was being discarded 1st. He made it clear he was trying to drive me crazy so i couldnt live without him... he says he identifies as a sociopath but has also been diagnosed bipolar 2, narcissistic (covert) and all the things that go along with it.
My children and i are free ! Free.

Thank you for talking about this, it is often hard to distinguish when this abuse is happening, since in religious environments one is encouraged to give everyone (except oneself) the benefit of the doubt, and one is also supposed to be taking direction and tough love "on-board", with a spirit of submission to authority and one of humility. But... that kindof environment is RIPE for exploitation.

This subject is triggering me. I was raised Catholic. Spiritual "Abuse" is too kind a term. What I suffered at the hands of the church and my family was Spiritual Terrorism. The irony is that the supposed stand-ins for god (Priests) were raping the shit out of fellow children while the church covered it up. My mother turned out to be a sociopath. I'm autistic, called bullshit on the church when I was 9, and on mommy dearest when I was 14. Somehow I survived that nighmare.
Again - it's terroism not abuse. How else can you describe the vision of hell that was central to church doctrine for so long? Fear and shame masquerading as love and kindness. The way I see it now, Larry Flynt was far more holy than any Pope, and much less perverted.

I'm about to turn 47 and have finally just figured this out and escaped the madness, and am now embracing my newfound spiritual freedom while simultaneously mourning the loss of the family I thought I knew upon finally seeing them in their proper, monstrous light. My mom, her sister, and my older sister set upon me the day I was born with a combination of End Times proto-Trumpism and sadistic negativity, destroying my mind, crushing my spirit, and locking me up under their mind control, which made a complete mess of my life. I've worked really hard to clean things up and come a long way and have been healing and making something of myself in spite of them. I've made every effort for peace but they insist on war, so fine. They're out of my life. I'm going on two years since last talking to any of them and not sure I ever will again. And if I do, I'm just going to say I no longer need your approval, or for you to develop a conscience and own up for me to know the truth about you and what you've done. Goodbye, at least until you develop a conscience and start reasoning like a grown up. They wasted SO much of my time and potential, but I've been making up for lost time and hoping to get even by succeeding.
What an incredible thing to live in this time in history of finally knowing these things and being able to speak them openly, and not only that but being able to share them and get educated on a platform like youtube. It’s a long way from our ancestors getting all their information from priests. History has been crying out for this to be said, and you do so so perfectly. I’ve subscribed to your channel, and booked marked this video as possibly the one I’ve been looking for to show them if I ever break no contact and attempt to explain why I’ve been no contact, not that I think they will actually listen but just to say what I need to say.

I have been through this situation a couple of times. My reply to those who become complicit in the lies is the Matthew 18 protocol which many do not follow. Take your complaint to the person. No results? Take two or three witnesses to the person. No results? Take your complaint to the assembly. I have done this and it makes for an interesting outcome to say the least. All the liars and shams are exposed for what they are. The problem is exacerbated when people swallow one sided stories without allowing the others involved to equal time and explanation. When people would come and say to me, "Your husband says you..." I would reply, "Did he also tell you ..." When they would hear the whole story they were less exercised in their indignation. Gossip is the telling of one-sided stories missing facts and truth.

You have nailed it. Thank you for a very accurate and spot on description of what spiritual abuse is. This is something I have been suffering from for the last couple of years. The spiritual abusers have been using all sorts of tactics to break my spirit and they have been doing it in the ways you have described. I have been triangulated, gaslighted, invalidated, humiliated, financially abused, isolated , stalked, threatened, intimidated in many different ways aimed at wearing me out. I know how it all sounds and now I am just looking back in shock, but it has really happened to me. My family, aquaintences and even business clients have left following the abusers instruction and blinded by the spiritual abusers status and religious power. Spiritual abuse is, as you said the most destructive, as it breaks the person’s spirit and without it there is no person left! Let us stay alive and do not let anybody kill our spirit! It is in our nature to belong to goodness, one could say it is in our spirit. When this familiarity to goodness is threatened then is the time to say NO! NO to abuse. It doesn’t matter where this happens, in a spiritual setting, political, work situation, friendship group, in a family, on a retreat or on the play ground, etc…, what matters is that we remain loyal to the goodness, the inner peace and daily freedom and to experience that goodness inside of us. - That is my take on how to move forward from this predicament, I hope this will be useful for someone. No, he described sinful people who use religion to torment others, for whatever reason. My first cousin is an elder in his huge church, and a sociopath. His sociopathy was revealed by his behavior in a political scandal eight years ago. It ended up costing him his business, which was just, but he continues in his church. He's a complete phony and a reflexive liar, of course, so I imagine it was easy enough for him to blame his scandal - connected troubles on "the liberal media." Plus, he's extremely wealthy ( his father - in - law's money, naturally ) and is able to donate a lot of money to his church.
Payoffs for their not asking too many questions.
On the other hand, I'm in a wonderful church fellowship of moderate size ( about 125 people ). My cousin could never survive in that congregation. He'd be ferreted out for what he is, and might even be excommunicated. He certainly would never be able to be an elder.

The way to hell is paved in gold no doubts by the lairs!!! I am now being blamed for the abuse. I can’t win and if left at early age they would still be pitted against me. I told my mom they will figure it out one day when I’m in a casket no doubt! Had the life squad hete a few times becsue of the stress of bs from all the toxic bs. My ex text me to ask what our wedding song was! Really? These guys never leave becsue they are always in limbo they don’t know one day they love you one day they hate you and I’m feeling the same vibes from my daughter and I just pray that she doesn’t end up living a life like that because my ex is miserable you can tell. I know it’s taken me three almost 3 years and I’m finally getting better I can’t entertain any more drama in my life as I can tell my kids I’m sorry I can’t change the past I’m willing to work on our relationship but no one can just hates me and so mad her dad supposed to pay for stuff and then he don’t he says he’s going to do it and then he don’t and then I’m there to pick up and I’m the bad guy. I’m used to be in the bad guy. I was abused just like my kids and my parents always protected my ex as my brother died and then my dad thofutb my ex was amazing and put him on a pedestal and I was the black sheep. He told me I’m a dumb girl and my ex said I’m a nobody.

I wonder why hearing "it's for the greater good" made me remember Albus Dumbledore on the original Harry Potter saga? I'm not sure but, maybe, it could be because Harry wasn't given the information of why he had to endure his uncle, aunt and cousin. it also pissed me off that when Dumbledore gives the explanation to Harry, he claims that his mistake was that he wanted harry to have a happy childhood. I don't know what JKR had on her mind, but Dumbledore has always look, to me, abusive towards Harry.
how hard it was to tell Harry that "Voldemort still has followers alive, and even himself isn't full dead, living with our aunt protects you against them. even against voldemort. like you saw while fighting quirrel. it seems your mother gave you some sort of protection linked to her bloodline" that would had helped harry a lot. even if he still had to go back to the dursley. knowing why he had too.
but, no. Harry had to do as the "superior" Albus Dumbledore said. without given any explanation of why. beyond the ocasional "Dumbledore is a wise man" given by Hagrid, Hermione, Molly, ...

All religion is coercive by definition. Everything you described is an accurate description of all of the main religions which involve a holy book, a hierarchy or a liturgy. But then, of course, there is no such thing as "spirit". It doesn't exist. Only the mind, the body and society and its technology are real.

Gee, thanks for explaining what the thousands of great minds who created Western civilization just weren't smart enough to catch onto.
All people with minds like yours ever produce is suicide, cultural suicide. It has been happening to the United States gradually for over a century. Now we see its unashamed manifestations in the "culture" of mass abortion, polysexuality, and sexual mutilation to try to make a person of one sex into the other.
      Thanks, thanks so much.

I doubt if anyone could manipulate me using some 'righteous spiritual/religious beliefs'. Essentially using God or some other 'big guy' as being on THEIR side making THEM right so YOU lose in comparison? That's an old trick. Wisdom (knowing how to think, knowing how to know) beats fanaticism or fixed ideas or dogmatic indoctrination no matter what form it takes. You should be able to spot control, manipulation, etc. being done by anyone with bad intentions. Should stick out like a sore thumb.

The definition of "Cult" has been changed big time. Most people can leave any religion. And most religions teach newbies prior to being made a member and if the newbies dislike anything whether they are a member or not, they can refuse the teachings. And many people have left churches.

Rejecting or protesting Catholicism has led to individuals deciding for themselves what the Bible is saying, so you have abuse by way of the Bible because of some fellas interpretation and not the truth. Everyone trying to be their own little Pope has consequences.

    • @KJ-lb4tj
      @KJ-lb4tj 3 месяца назад

Interpreting the Bible in a slightly different way does not necessitate abuse. There are so many theologies out there and the pope has no more basis for being right in his interpretation than other pastors, bishops, ministers or person that reads the Bible.
Abuse has to incorporate coersion, control, manipulation not simply holding a different theology or understanding of the Bible.
