Totally, it's easy to forget the massive changes we have gone through in the PC gaming industry, i build a pc about every 5 years and every time a lot changes but going back to my first build when i was a teenager, it's insane how much it changed, and it's only when i watch videos of people talking about old hardware to i remember what i used to deal with like in the early 2000's. Having PC's like this in a museum would be interesting and i wonder if there is a PC museum out there where you can see various trends over the years going all the way back to the 80's.. We come so far since my first PC with huge 5" floppy disks, lol.

Jay, you should look into the company ASML. Intel didn't invest in their newer technology and TSMC did which, in my opinion, is related to the delay Intel had with catching up to AMD who gets their silicone from TSMC. ASML does arguably the most difficult part of making a CPU and seemingly no one knows who they are.

this build is the reason i have this case and i still love it
    - im looking at a personal update myself but trying to find a case that matches this for uniqueness is not easy and i dont want to reuse this case

Out of all the Cougar cases this model was my favorite. This build came close to me switching cases. I would mount the rad in back with MNPCTech "Overkill" grills making it like an exhaust. Also solving the fan blowing in face problem.

I remember you building this very vividly, it was around the same time your work convinced me to build my own pc. Definitely keep it Threadripper but maybe put two RTX 3090’s in there 😊

Love the Cougar Conqueror case. Used it for my own gaming rig. Mine is air cooled, so not as cool, and it does get dusty, but it is easy to see when it needs a cleaning and easy to clean!

You tricked me Jay :) I thought this was the new over-complicated build, not an old over-complicated build! I'm a newer subscriber to the channel so I missed this one but now I can see why you like these designs compared to the simple rectangular box designs that other people use.

I've enjoyed all of your builds, but I think the idea of updating this with whatever the next Threadripper is prolly has me more excited than I've ever been for a build from you.
    Please please please do this

This is still my favorite build that you've ever done. I still remember you building it way back in the day, doesnt feel like it was 5 years though! I am very excited to see you update this rig.

It is pretty crazy how far CPUs have advanced since that first generation of Zen chips. I love it when some maverick company puts something new and exciting out there to shake up the status quo.

I actually used different-sized wire looms to "hide" the ketchup-and-mustard cables in my old build, loved how it looked as well

Old computers can be fun - for a moment that is until you get bored from waiting on them.
My first PC was a IBM 80486 33 Mhz with 4 MB ram, 170 MB hard drive and a 14" SuperVGA monitor. It cost $4.000 in 1992 which translates to aprox. $8.500 today.
It did not have any 3D hardware and audio was that it could say "beep". I remember buying a audio card for it, that cost me $600 or about $1.300 in today's money.
    Times were different back then.

Yes! Definitely want to see this rig in all it's glory, and a new build on it? new fluid after cleaning? Perhaps some new tubing now that you've learned a thing or two since then... who knows but it's all good there outside the old chunky fluid. Definitely want to see the cleanup if it is gunked up. I second the pedestal... perhaps not even changing anything... who knows. I mean in the end it's a great system and a real history lesson.

Fresh installs always mean 2 things.
    1. Windows update/ optimization in the background
    2. Windows Defender running at full speed eating up resources.

The pc I've used for 4 years has a ryzen 1600 and a 1070ti, and it still runs really good for 1080p. I honestly don't think it's that old but when I talk about it I always get looks like damn that's old. Best part is the 1070ti Founders edition I bought for cheap because it was used for crypto mining. Still runs amazing to this day!

lol at noticing the slow response ... back when the 1950X was new I "upgraded" from an overclocked (4.3Ghz) 4770K to a 1950X and noticed that response was slower...in fact it just generally felt slower than what I was used to for everything but boot speed. Much happier when I moved to a 3900X and demoted the 1950X to running Unraid.

Five years...been running a 2700X/1080ti these last five years. It still (mostly) does what it needs to, but definitely showing signs of age. It was supposed to be downgraded to backup rig with a new box replacing it two years ago, but events kept pushing plans back. We'll see how this year shakes out.
