In 1978s The Deep ,staring Nick Nolte,Jacaqline Bisset a film written by Peter Benchley ,who also wrote JAWS,made a powerful impression on my young mind. I've seen a Clip of extra footage also from the TV broadcast. I wish Scream Factory would release a special edition of THE DEEP also. I've always loved John Berkeys poster artwork for KONG. I've also loved the poster for THE DEEP!

The TV cut added a great exchange between Jack and Dwan where he tells her if KONG doesn't make it they will never be able to look each other in the eye again. Great stuff.

Good for you for noting that wonderful and moving scene!
That scene is fantastic and CRUCIAL to the story.
When I watched it on tv I didn't know it wasn't in the film but it made me like that version more.
There is some great stuff in the King Kong in NYC sequence that is only in the TV cut!
      Absurd that it was cut

First saw this movie in theaters back in 1976 with my parents (at age 9) and absolutely loved it! I had seen the 1933 original many times and it’s over of my all time favorites. I’ve seen the remake several times throughout the years and revisited it last year and still love it so much (great effects, Jessica Lange, Jeff Bridges and just pure 70s fun!) I just got the Scream Factory Blu-ray and look forward to checking out the tv cut as well as the special features. I have great memories of it too. Thanks for sharing.

I just finished the TV cut, WOW!!! It blew me away, so much new Kong stuff and the score is great. I remember watching it when it came on tv but didn't remember all the great added footage. Yes, its bloated and most of the added stuff wasn't really needed but if you love this film, all that stuff will feel like more icing on a yummy cake. It feel more EPIC and the builded up to KONG's entrance is crazy, overstuffed and AMAZING. I've always wanted MORE KONG 76 and now I have it. My Kong dreams are fulfilled! 3 incredible versions of my favorite film now added to my library. I won't be watching the original cut again for a while(I've seen it a billion times at this point any way), The Big Event TV cut will be my go to. Shout Factory did good in my book. Can't wait to rewatch this christmas, may I'll make it a two night event.

I've waited over 40 years for a descent copy of the TV edition that, for me, tells the story so infinitely better and covers the connection between Dwan and Kong in a more heartfelt manner. One point worth mentioning here on the theatrical cut...When the foreign blu ray came out many years ago, I grabbed an Australian copy and was pleased to see where they fixed that edit blip when Kong was rolling off the tower and there's a split second where Kong is not on the screen, then suddenly pops into view as he's falling. They took that empty space out so its seamless. Sadly its back in the domestic version. I know its nit picking. But after seeing the fix, it was odd they re-established it since the restored version was already in place and looks exactly like this one in terms of picture quality and sound.
I enjoyed the special features but felt the interviews were way too short. I was hoping for a more involved retrospective that covered the film's storied history and how its grown to be as appreciated as it is today. But all things considered (especially with the pandemic) I'm very thankful for what they were able to carve out during such difficult times to bring this to market. Maybe somewhere down the road there will be a more involved back story on the movie. I DO think the audio commentary from Ray Morton is by far the most engaging and informative and meets that desire to get an historical accounting. He does an excellent job.
But again the true gem and blessing to this set is the TV version. I doubt I will ever watch the theatrical version again, now that I have a beautiful copy of the extended cut. I saw Kong in theaters with my dad, so that was a great memory. But my love was sustained through the television cut a couple of years later and the rebroadcasts they did into the early 80's. Those were magical moments and seeing this cut again about brought tears to my eyes. It was like finding a long lost best friend.

    • @brucemarshall3446

I think that, barring a fan edit that combines the two versions, the optimal viewing experience is :
Theatrical version up thru the snake fight.
      Switch to...
Tv cut: Dwan and Jack running away/Kong bashing the wall.
The added footage to the first part doesn't add much and TAKES away some sexy footage of Lange.
All the great new stuff is in the second part.

  • @lpquagmire3621
    @lpquagmire3621 3 года назад +4

I don't see how the tv cut could possibly be 180 minutes as the original running time of the theatrical cut was heavily edited for television. They can say they added an hour of unseen footage, but they also took a lot out when it aired on NBC. Also, much of the added footage amounts to adding two or three seconds to a given scene (i.e. Roy Bagley speaking to Joe Perko early in the film -- theatrical cut: Joe Perko: You mean there's LAND behind that fog? Roy Bagley: Correct, Joe. Extended TV Cut with additional footage -- Joe Perko: You mean there's LAND behind that fog? Roy Bagley: Correct - Correct, Joe), which add little to the film's run time. It's fun to see the unused footage, but film editors exist for good reason.

But what most reviewers don’t tell you is that the television is exactly the way that
the film ran on television after it’s theatrical run yes with its extended time run but
with commercial fade to blacks and at the 90 min point or “the log” scene the film
fades out to start completely over again from the beginning in a near 12 minute of
recap. Now for those of you my age who grow up in the network television days of
the 1970s this was the way longer running films were sectioned for a ‘movie of the
week’ showing. So with that said enjoy the rerelease of this film which sort of had
a bad reputation since its 76 release but over the years like a lot of other films has
gotten a second chance due to renewed interest in newer technology. The boys at
shout factory deserves praise once again for a great resurrection. Good review!

I was fortunate enough to come across this copy on VHS that somebody was selling at a star trek convention. The extra footage is really amusing to look at when it is incorporated into the film as oppose Justin added extra you can watch on the side. I just picked up King Kong Today. May 19th 2021. Consequently the day after charls growdon passed away. I was in 6th grade when this came out. Saw King Kong 76 during a family reunion. The theater was a huge showplace, wrap around screen. As young as I was, I could not stomach Jessica Lange's awful performance. That and NO DINO'S. Also, the BIG reveal was laughable. I did not like Kong 76. I was terribly disappointed and tried over the years to warm up to it. Every time I have tried to enjoy Kong 76, all the bad aspects of this production keep leaping out of the screen. All that has changed with the Television Cut, with one scene in particular: The Bar Scene. Before Kong carries Dwan off to the Twin Towers, Jack and Dwan have an important exchange that was relegated to the cutting room floor. Yes, she does love Jack, but she is not listening. If Kong dies, there no chance for them. Without this scene, Dwan's tears and cries for Jack during the conclusion are hallow. The TV Cut is a far better viewing experience.
