I would have chosen a better solution to securing the rafters to the house, since you've added a considerable amount of weight to the whole patio roof. Nails will become loose after time and work themselves out even from the slightest movement from wind. Also, fascia at the end of the rafters is important to overall strength...not to mention rain gutters to keep moisture from creeping up and under the end of the roof. At 5:14 there is a view of a rectangular opening that I'm assuming was not "flashed" properly. Great concept...but I don't think an inspector would agree.
Thank you for the tips. The rectangular opening is a skylight and I made my own flashing since it was during the pandemic when material was very limited and delivery was a month out. I agree about the gutters, i have to get those installed. So far in California it has only rained a handful of times (that's why we're in a drought).
@SoCalif MBA You're right the rectangular opening is for a skylight, the skylight didn't not include the flashing therefore I made my own flashing. But definitely we put flashing around it. I made a video on that as well.
Hi Nicole, Thanks for your comment. Regarding the paint, I always have paint from previous projects, however, after giving the rafters 2 layers of paint, I believe I used approximate 2 gallons.
What are the layers of your roof, exactly? Looks like you have shiplap underneath the plywood, painted grey for aesthetics? And what is on top of they plywood and waterproof sheeting... is that standard roofing tile? Thank you. I'm planning to build a shade structure in my backyard soon, but don't care for the metal sheets.
Great job! I’m considering doing the same for the lightly painted patio roof. Did you use D41 asphalt primer as suggested on the plywood or base sheet? Did you use additional adhesive for the Liberty SA cap sheet around flashing and joints? Does the cap sheet stick to the base sheet pretty well after 2 years? Thanks!
Hi Brian, I didn't use additional adhesive. I nailed the Felt Underlayment onto the plywood, and used the Liberty Felt cap sheet self-adhesive (no additional adhesive). Just make sure you lay it down completely flat and overtime the sun will active the adhesive. On some of the corners we added some Henry (wet patch) and so far it's been 1½ years and everything looks good.
I love this. I've been searching the internet trying to find some easy instructions for me to build on my own. I think I can do it now that I see you do it. How long did it take you to build this and the plywood that you used for the roof what kind of plywood was this, because on the other side it almost looks like a beadboard.
Thanks.. lol now I see in your comment section you listed all the materials you have used again thank you so much it looks great you definitely give me inspiration to try this project this summer 👍
Hi Angela, yes you are right I listed all the materials in the description box. I'm really happy I did this project, I love the fact that rain 🌧 doesn't come through anymore. It took me maybe about 3 weekends, it wasn't a fast project but just taking it one piece at a time, is definitely durable. 😉 Thanks for your comment and good luck!
There is no inspectiona to pass when buying a house, usually the buyer finds a private inspector that comes and inspects, then it's up to the buy and their agent to make some kind of deal with the seller to either have it fixed or lower price... basically there is no county inspection.. you can build anything you want without a permit and as long as you tell the buyer that there is no permit for it, every thing is golden
Hi George, DB is correct. We had an inspector before buying the house and nothing was ever said about the patio (I'm not sure how we all missed that). If fact after we bought the house then it was when we noticed that the rafters were sitting on the edge of the mount joist. Few years later we built a casita on the backyard, by then is when I found out that the patio was build without permits, in fact city wouldn't pass the casita's final inspection until the patio was removed.

Thank you and thank you for your comment.
I do really live this job, fixing and renovating. Where you could come up creative ideas. Good job and well done to you.
Thank you so much Darling. I love the fact that my patio furniture will no longer get rained on.😁
Here Sis watching you shine , and you did that ❤ !
Aawww thanks! I did most of it, I had to, I got tired of seeing the rain come through and damage my patio furniture.

The rectangular opening is a skylight....I'm guessing the skylight kit had the flashing, but I would bet they did put a flashing around the opening.

Great transformation. This had fantastic results to your patio. How many gallons of paint was needed to complete the project?
Thanks

Hi Sean, it's not shiplap, its the design on the plywood. For convenience, I've added the links of the materials I used on the description box 😉.

How did you attach the 2x6 angled rafters to the house?
We used nails to attach the rafters to the house.
I like it. I’m thinking of building 10x20’ a lean to house.
Just take it a step at a time and you can totally do it! 💪

Around 50k back in 2018, with me doing some of the work instead of hiring.
