A pure vocal talent that never needed the touch of auto-tune.

This really sounds very different from Dusty's version so I don't know why people even try to compare. They are just so different in their interpretations. Both are beautiful in their own ways. Music, like life, does not have to be an either or situation.

      +Mondez Durden True. Opinions man...
In my, it should be alot faster than the original. Aretha can kick ass with her voice. Would blow you away.

With Dusty and Aretha you are so right. Both versions are different and both are great interpretations. I'm sure each woman loved the other woman's version.

I am not quite getting the gist of this interpretation though, it’s not convincing me me even with all the big runs and belting, it sounded to me like she insisted it had to be different from the original and did everything differently but it didn’t come together. Maybe if she sang the original interpretation of a growing explosion of the secret love with this son of a preacher man, just with her voice i think it would sound good. She had to present it differently I guess in her mind, but it didn’t come together for me or convince me of this secret passion with billy ray

Aretha was offered this song prior to Dusty and turned it down. Ultimate compliment to Dusty that she decided to record it after hearing Dusty's version and loving it. Of course, she put the RE RE on it and made it her own, like all the greats do.

Aretha always made EVERYTHING her own. Dusty made her name known by taking on R&B and Pop and still making it sound real. She was white, English, and lesbian....so she had her own walls to climb. Thank the gods for both of these women.

Aretha's point of reference was always the church and her love for God, this reduction is a great example of this. I don't believe that the greatest amounts us rest, they continue to work for God, until the return of our Lord Jesus Christ, on that note hope to hear your beautiful voice praising God in another lifetime🙏🙏🙏

    Lyrics
Billy Ray was a preacher's son
And when his daddy would visit he'd come along
When they gathered around and started talkin'
That's when Billy would take me walkin'
Out through the back yard we'd go walkin'
Then he'd look into my eyes
    Lord knows, to my surprise
The only one who could ever reach me
Was the son of a preacher man
The only boy who could ever teach me
Was the son of a preacher man
Yes he was, he was, ooh, yes he was
    Bein' good isn't always easy
No matter how hard I try
When he started sweet-talkin' to me
He'd come'n tell me "Everything is all right"
He'd kiss and tell me "Everything is all right"
Can I get away again tonight?
The only one who could ever reach me
Was the son of a preacher man
The only boy who could ever teach me
Was the son of a preacher man
Yes he was, he was, ooh, yes he was (yes he was)
    How well I remember
The look that was in his eyes
Stealin' kisses from me on the sly
    Takin' time to make time
Tellin' me that he's all mine
    Learnin' from each other's knowin'
Lookin' to see how much we've grown and
The only one who could ever reach me
Was the son of a preacher man
The only boy who could ever teach me
Was the son of a preacher man
Yes he was, he was, oh yes he was
He was the sweet-talkin' son of a preacher man
(The only boy who could ever teach me)
Was the son of a preacher man
Was the sweet-talkin' son of a preacher man

Dusty was and is the best white British female singer ever, she had real soul, but Aretha IS soul, straight from the black church, this is the gospel version, Dusty's is as good but not gospel and not meant to be.

mm ... I've always felt that Aretha Franklin is way too overrated ... I've heard far better singers who are less famous, like Randy Crawford ..
Aretha has the power but lacks sensuality in her voice .. try listening to Randy Crawford, she's got both power and sensuality to the max, she's one singer who's criminally underrated ...

Dusty interpreted this song and it was great. This version is something else as is everything this woman did around this time in her career. There's no singer in the world that touches her or touches this. I remember when Whitney Houston was compared to her in the 80s and I just laughed and laughed and laughed.
