- This is a portrait drawing in charcoal from start to finish with an emphasis on drawing in a loose and expressive way. The real time version of this video is about 25 minutes, shown here as a time-lapse for brevity. I hope you enjoy it. For a small channel like mine, a comment and a ‘like’ really helps to get the video seen, so please do so if you can. If you have any questions, just leave them in the comments and I will do my best to answer them. Thanks for watching!

Your drawings are not boring from start to finish and keep me focused.
Thank you Rani, I appreciate the comment!
I would love to see you do figures in charcoal AND paint! The shapes in your work is what catches my eye and how you control your values is a skill I want to improve on. No matter what you post, I am all for it.
Thank you for the suggestions Dynamica! Your comments are much appreciated :)
Your loose style is amazing.😃👌
Thank you! Much appreciated. :)
So good.
I love your work so much! Please do keep posting! Your videos help me very much.
Thank you Jennifer, I really love hearing that.
Laajawab ❤
thank you for sharing your art
My pleasure, thank you for watching!
Gorgeous work!
Thanks Chris!
Amazing work, beautiful job, wish some days I can draw like yours
Thanks so much Sarah! Keep practicing, portraiture is difficult subject matter.
Hi everyone, if you have a moment, leave a comment and let me know the kind of content you would like to see from me in the future. More portraits? Figures? Paintings? Something else? I would love to hear & appreciate your input! ✌
more of the same, man, maybe some figures? George Bridgeman has nothing on you-really!!
very nice I like thank you
❤️❤️❤️👌🔥
Jeff, do ever use animals as your subject matter? If so, I’d love to see some examples of that. Thanks for sharing your work. It’s always an inspiration to watch your videos.
Thanks for the suggestion Jim. I have drawn some animals in the past & I sketch my cat if she’ll cooperate (which is almost never). Glad you like the videos and I’ll put that on the list. Thanks again!
Nice!
Thanks Bruce!
Que bonito lo haces un saludo
Thanks Javier!
Awesome! Do you have any tips in getting the geometry right early? I struggle with this phase the most with faces and expressions. And when I see your drawings it comes to life sooo early!
Thanks! Try to block-in ‘areas’ (the entire eye socket, for instance) with very simple shapes early and completely ignore details until the positions start to make sense. I like to add values early but many people don’t during the block-in stage. I find that shadow and value helps me to start to ‘see’ it as a 3 dimensional volume. It gets easier with practice although it’s never easy (at least for me). Best of luck!
Great advice, i will try to do that!
@jeff haines thank you!
👍😍🌺
Hi Jeff, I really like the effect you achieved here, but I find charcoal a bit hard to control. Would you be so kind as to say which charcoal vine and pencil you are using in this video? I would like to buy some to practice more. Thank you for the time it takes you to post these excellent videos, and I wish you success in your channel.
Thanks you! I believe this one is willow charcoal (the brand is Coates) and I usually just use a #2 charcoal pencil (Generals). I used to use vine charcoal a lot but I've been using willow more lately (there's very little difference)
@@JeffHainesArt Excellent! Thank you.
What is the pencil you are using? (The orange colored tool? ) ty, this is so inspirational! New charcoal on my list already! 😊
The pencil is a #2 'Generals' brand charcoal pencil. I usually don't use a pencil till the latter half.
this is amazing! do you have a link to your reference? More portraits please! 😋👍
Thanks Benny! I added a link to the reference in the description, it is a very loose interpretation though.
Do you give tutorial sessions?
My Patreon page has many demo videos with discussion/instruction and I also offer personal critiques to patrons in the upper tier. I’m open to and available for 1 to 1 teaching as well. Thanks for asking!
Can i draw portraits with this "loose" method using a pencil??
Sure, you can draw loosely with pencil. Graphite hangs on to the paper and doesn't move as much as charcoal though, so there's less 'smeariness'.
